Really a disappointment First time back in Chicago in a year. Had breakfast then and it was very good. Stopped today and couldn't be more disappointed. The waiter appeared disheveled and completely disinterested. Took 10 minutes to take my drink order, never came back for coffee refill, (had to ask). American breakfast claims " scratch made biscuit" more like three day old lump of dough. Entire meal was cold, scrambled eggs undercooked. Ordered cheese on eggs, forgot and when returned the eggs were so cold, the cheese wasn't melted. Definitely NOT worth the $32.00! read more

My family made a reservation through Open Table for Thanksgiving dinner on November 28, 2024. We call for reservations ~ 4 weeks ago but we're they only book through Open Table. There were 6 people in our party and Open Table said we had to make 2 separate reservations, one for 4 people and one for 2 people. We arrived about 15 minutes early ( it was for 2:00) and were told there were no tables available and if we wanted to eat we'd all have to sit at the bar and be out of the restaurant by 3:00. Our party had a 2 and a 4 year old, so NO. We were told by a very condescending manager "I don't know why they did that" and stated they were completely booked after 3:00. Keep in mind, the 6 of us walked 2 miles in 30 degree weather with winds at a steady 15 mph. He stated he could not accommodate us at any point the rest of the day and had the gaul to wish us a Happy Thanksgiving. If it were only for the food I would give 4 stars. The food is consistently good. I live in the neighborhood and come here often even though its a restaurant attached to a hotel. Service can be spotty but if you are lucky you will get one of the excellent servers. Now the issue - the check. They add a 3% charge on every check. Initially they try to have you pay on the credit card machine where you basically see the amount. You may be able to see the detail if you are not totally uncomfortable with the server standing there. I always ask for a paper bill as I like to see the detail plus I am paying cash. I always pay cash and tell them so that the 3% fee is not included. Most of the time it is still on there. It is not the server's fault as the directives come from management. A nice brunch, lunch or dinner should not be stressful. Unfortunately, I have stopped coming here for this reason. Any extra fees should be fully disclosed before ordering so the customer has a choice before the check arrives. Put it on the website as well as the menu as well as it's purpose. This is the only restaurant inside the Le Méridien Hotel. Front desk has mentioned they are only partnering with them. Went there for a few occasions as the hotel offers $16 per day destination fee redemption and breakfast (value up to $15) for elite members. The services at night and in the afternoon were great. Although I'm only there to use my destination fee redemption coupon. HOWEVER, breakfast was a completely different experience. The waiter in the morning was really bad. No service at all and in the end, added a 20% gratuity to the bill. There's nothing mentioned on the menu that a 20% gratuity is mandatory. The two time I went to the bistro (not breakfast), there were no mandatory 20% gratuity added to my bill. I think this guy is doing that without the restaurant's management approval. It is not about money but it's the matter of principle. Gratuity is to reward someone who gave a good service, not to make sure the waitstaff to get tips no matter how shitty the service they give. This guy doesn't deserve any tips at all and I felt that I'm forced to give him tips when the service is not there. Management really needs to look into his tactics. He is giving your restaurant a bad reputation. read more

Live a few blocks away but I wouldn't come back here unless desperate---I mostly needed a patio table to have breakfast/brunch and work with a colleague visiting from out of the country. Service on a Tuesday around 10:30-11 a.m. was very patchy, although the place was not crowded; we would've ordered more if the server had checked in on us. They do not serve espresso-based coffee drinks! Didn't realize until paying that they impose a silly 3% fee for credit card transactions. I'm surprised Visa, Mastercard, etc., allow them to do this. I saw a statement below about the $15 credit. We were staying at the Essex and it worked for us. We paid with a credit card. But I will say it was during happy hour and it turned out the discounted happy hour prices came to exactly $15 and they wouldn't let us use both. I've been to grant park bistro twice, once pre-covid for happy hour and this past Sunday for brunch. I enjoyed it both times, though this review is only for brunch. It was a warm, sunny day, and a friend and I decided to reconnect over a meal. I had walked past grant park bistro recently and saw that they were open and had outdoor seating. I also saw that they had a brunch mimosa special (bottomless for 1.5 hrs), which made the decision to eat there quite simple. They are currently not accepting reservations, but we were seated pretty soon after we arrived (noonish). I ordered a burger and my friend had a chicken sandwich that she said was very good. I live right next door and my experience was amazing! The food was great quality for the price and the staff was friendly and prompt. I ordered the punch as a cocktail, the Caesar salad as an app, and the the shrimp Alfredo as the entree. I am pescatarian and they allowed me to sub out the chicken. Due to COVID-19 There was only outdoor seating but I called ahead and the wait was only 20 minutes at most. I really enjoyed my experience and will definitely be back. We did not make a reservation before going in this restaurant because it was not really our plan and we are glad we are able to be seated immediately. It is not my first time visiting the place but recently was just probably my third time. It is definitely one of the best restaurants in the area having its convenient location, cleanliness, casual and cozy atmosphere and vibe and especially friendly and accommodating service. We were immediately assisted by their staff and we order right away. Their menu depends and varies from happy, lunch and dinner if I remember it right and there are different options and the prices are fair. I just ordered their burger which was served with handful of fresh and crispy fries. The burger taste just fine and definitely just a regular burger with nothing special to it but it is still good. the worst experience I've had at you restaurant. I came in w a friend waiting on the rest of our party . We ordered a beer while waiting .when the rest of the group arrived we ordered the mimosas . We waited for 25 minu to place our drink orders .Then had to wait to lace our food order . No one came to see if it was something that we needed . Then when we're tried to order our las mimosa we were told our time started when my friens and I ordered our beers . No one ever came over to check to see if we were alright or anything. When questioned about our last round of talked we were told our beers were part of this even though we waited to order them . The person we talked to was dismissive we explained how we ordered. The quiche lorraine I can't stop thinking about. The burger, the grilled salmon, and the bolognese are also exceptional. The grilled tartes are perfect for sharing. Our server, Rachel, was attentive and sweet. All the staff made sure we were being taken care of. The manager even stopped by to say hi. This place could easily be a stuffy place if it wanted to but everyone is so down to earth. I will definitely be back. The draft list was good, service attentive. The moules marinières came with pickled fennel which threw off the flavors of the dish & made the mussels seem off or bad. Even the broth had pickled brine in it. Not 2 flavors I need to taste together again. Oddly the moules were supposed to be with shallots and the salmon comes with pickled fennel. Were they out of shallots so pickled fennel it was? I did not order the salmon just read the menu to see if the mussels were supposed to come with pickled fennel. They weren't. The bacon flat bread would be so much better if there was a bit less bechamel then covered in melted Swiss cheese. I love this Alsatian inspired dish. The pistachio cream ale from Goose Island was really delicious! Couldn't taste any pistachio but it was a really good Cream Ale. Service & ambiance were good. Food was disappointing. Before the remodel of the Essex, this was Brasserie by LM. I used to come here for their Coq au Vin, and also for their Chicken in Cider (which was similar in concept, though a different flavor.). I had friends coming in from the suburbs, and looked up the new menu and saw they had Coq au Vin again! Yay! My friend used to be manager of the old London House, and knows food. I told him about the coq au vin, and we decided that Grant Park Bistro would be our restaurant. What a shock, when our dinners came, and we saw bland boneless/skinless breasts with a dab of white sauce on top! I thought the waiter had brought us the wrong order, and said--no, we ordered the coq au vin. He said, this is the coq au vin. See, it has wine sauce on top. I was so horrified and embarrassed, that anyone working in a French restaurant would think this is coq au vin, that I didn't know what to say. OK, he comped it, but the damage was done. We won't be back, which is a shame because we live a block away. read more
