My wife and I planned an informal wedding reception which was intended to be a social gathering for our two families several months after we got married. We went with a non-traditional theme which included cupcakes a wedding topper cake for the dessert. We chose Grant's Bakery to do the topper cake and worked with Gary, one of their cake makers. Gary walked us through their process, portfolio and what options were available to us. He understood our theme and produced a white and gold themed topper cake which was spot on. My wife LOVED it and it. Unfortunately my wife and I were not able to have the cake for our wedding reception as we had to cancel due to a major incident impacting several of our Maine towns, but Gary was patient and willing to still make the cake despite their store being shut down for 2-3 days due to the incident. We pushed the due date for the cake to be ready, out a few days and when my wife picked it up, she LOVED it and complimented him several times on how he hit the theme with colors and the simplistic design. When passing through Lewiston, I make it a point to stop at Grant's Bakery whenever possible. Very little has changed at this family owned and operated spot -- it still looks the same, it still smells the same, and it still tastes just as delicious as ever. In this day and age you've gotta appreciate that sort of consistency and reliability in a bakery. Plus, kudos to L/A for keeping a mom and pop store like this in business since 1956! I grew up coming to Grant's almost every Saturday for our bean supper fixings (cholesterol free [vegetarian] baked beans, coleslaw [they make my favorite coleslaw in the world], brown bread [is there anything better than hot brown bread and butter?!], and - of course! -  pastries for dessert. And every Christmas Eve we stopped in for yuletide cheer... and roasted nuts and tortiere!  Nowadays, my favorite thing to grab? A half dozen of the eclairs! Generally speaking, I don't really like eclairs. But there's something magical about the Grant's ones (maybe it's nostalgia? maybe it's the way they change texture after sitting in the fridge for a couple hours? I don't know, but nothing like them exist elsewhere). The choux dough is tender, the cream in the center is silky and flavorful, and the chocolate icing is rich. With an iced coffee, it makes for the perfect midday pick me up. Rude staff is one thing, but when the owner/manager is rude, that sets the tone for the entire store. I understand you are busy and probably stressed, but being rude and snarky to someone coming in to check out what you offer, NOT good customer service or a strong business model. I was going to place an order for out store new years eve party and thought I would start a new tradition by getting everyone in my store donuts, muffins, etc, every Saturday. From daily purchases, to fundraising opportunities, I've done it all with Grants. They make fundraising for your favorite charities very easy. I recently worked with Grants to make my wedding reception cake and of course they didn't disappoint. They shared their knowledge and wisdom to help us determine the appropriate cake size and tiering for the group we had. The cake was delicious as always! Went to Grants with high expectations, but were left very disappointed! My wife and I ordered a simple smash cake and cupcakes for my sons first birthday. The smash cake is extremely lopsided and looks like it was done at home. The cupcakes, which are supposed to be fronted in red came out pink with yellow sprinkles. When we asked the associate about it, we were told that's "just how it is." If this is Grant's "red" icing, their Patriots and Red Sox cakes must look absolutely ridiculous. You can even see it is pink based on the icing residue on the inside box. I can see why the associate was annoyed with us wanting to look at the product before leaving the store with it. Grant's did a good job with my daughters first birthday, I don't know if I'll return after this experience though. There are other bakers around. read more

This bakery has been around for a very long time and is still one of THE best places. I grew up going to this place when it was on College Street and still stop in each time I visit. However, now I come with a big order since I have all my friends hooked on this place. Yes there are bakeries all over but the stuff from the bakery at grocery stores are different. They have cakes, pies, and lots of goodies like Whoopie pies, cream horns, cookies, éclairs and more. Everything is baked fresh and I've called to place an order and they've made it up fresh for me. The fruit turnovers are great. Small crescent shapes filled with your choice of Blueberry, Raspberry, Apple which they mark with a letter on the top so you know when you pick up the B you are biting into Blueberry. I use to come back with a few things and my friends would try some things. Before I knew it I was bringing back an order for each of them. With bags of goodies over $100 people thought I was wacky. Little did they know it wasn't all for me. Saturday's is bean day so you can get salt pork and your choice of beans with brown bread. You can also place an order and have them ship certain things so this could be a nice surprise goodie package for those you love. Don't forget the Molasses cookies. They are soooo yummy! read more

i went in there with my friend to pick up her wedding cake. it was truly beautiful, but the accent color was pink instead of green. she was pretty upset, but they insisted they would fix it in a few minutes. she didn't want to do it, but i told her, "they want to make you happy, let them." the cake decorator went into the back & made a green frosting & even came out & asked her if this was the correct color. they were so apologetic & considerate. i highly recommend this bakery. best chocolate/vanilla raspberry cake i've ever had & i don't like fruit with chocolate. read more

I have not been here since I was a student at nearby Bates College a long time ago. My daughter and I were in town on Good Friday for a track meet and I got an urge for a salmon pie to commemorate the day. My daughter, who is no fan of fish, was easily bribed to accompany me with the promises of baked sweets. Upon entering the store we were greeted by some of the nicest and most helpful staff I have encountered in awhile. I purchased the salmon pie and my daughter indulged her sweet tooth with some peanut butter cookies. My daughter liked her cookies quite a bit and I really enjoyed my salmon pie. I do have to say that I wish I did not read the ingredients because I could do without the hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors and colors added but it was very tasty nonetheless. Grant's did our wedding cake and it was as delicious as it was beautiful! We live out of state so Don and I arranged everything via email. He made it all very easy and was great to work with. We did a tasting when we were in town in the spring and were so wowed by the lemon cake we ended up entirely changing our original order (from red velvet to lemon with blueberry filling). Our cutting cake was gluten free and you would never know it! We ordered the cake with plain frosting and a friend added the flowers to the finished product. read more

Mmmmm the smell of cakes and fresh pastries fill the air as you enter this fabulous bakery. They stock birthday supplies as well birthday cake. Grab a pre made platter of petite fours, cupcakes or other delicious treats. Stop by for doughnuts and wow all your friends with the wonderful jelly filled, chocolate or plain delight. All perfectly paired with a cup of coffee. They also sell shots of frosting to help curb that sweet tooth. Then there are the endless sweets. The eclairs are soft and covered in a light chocolate frosting. The brownie crema was perfect. A brownie covered in a fluffy vanilla frosting and dipped in chocolate. My only regret is not ordering more than one. The raspberry pastry was flakey and airy with sweet jam and sweet frosting. The peanut butter and chocolate roll covered in peanut butter frosting was tasty. The whoopie pie of the week was an almond coffee cake with blueberry. The texture of the whoopie was soft sticky and delicious. The flavor was overwhelming of amaretto, which I am not a fan of. I would order a different flavor next time. The cannoli was a reminder of Bostons north end. It was a sweet ricotta filling inside a crunchy shell and decorated with sprinkles. Good old-fashioned New England bakery. Doesn't have the all-natural vibe of, say, Ceres bakery in Portsmouth. It's more prosaic than that. Whether or not you grew up in a French Canadian family, I think all Mainers can identify with the term "bean supper". On any given Saturday night in the state of Maine, for under $10, you can partake of this weekly ritual in any manner of public suppers hosted by churches of all denominations that typically feature beans baked in a zesty concoction of molasses, salt pork, onions, ketchup, mustard and Worcestershire sauce to name the star ingredients. Along with the beans as the centerpiece, you'll most likely find a tubular meat product, a fibrous crunchy slaw and an endless suppl y of rolls and/or brown bread. The downside of such a feast is that well, um, there's an awful lot of fiber being ingested that makes the intestinal tract overworked which results in a heckuva lot of flatulence. I know, TMI, but you should prepare by ingesting BEANO before you eat. In my particular home experience, I routinely looked forward to my mother's simple feast of baked pea beans, brown bread from a B&M can (sometimes homemade biscuits), homemade coleslaw and, it goes without saying, red hot dogs. It's one of the cheapest meals a family living on a budget can enjoy. Grant's Bakery looks, on the surface, as a typical throwback bakery - not a fancy-schmancy one like you'll find in Portland but just an honest array of breakfast pastries, as well as cakes and cookies.The interior is straightforward with glass cases housing the baked goods including another Maine staple, the Whoopie Pie. On this brisk but sunny December morning, I finally got the chance to sample the fare and the lovely young woman at the counter happily indulged my fantasies of fevès au lard and tourtière (pork pie). She welcomed me as a new customer when I had that "deer-in-headlights" look about me. Needless to say, I went in for a couple of donuts and came out bearing a brown sack filled with a quart of baked pea beans, a bag of hotdogs (red of course), a pint of cole slaw, two pastries, and a frozen meat pie. And a coffee with 2 squirts of pumpkin pie syrup. I bypassed the tempting roasted cashews, glanced at the freezerful of Shain's of Maine ice cream but made a beeline for the counter. As was mentioned by another Yelper, Grant's posts specials each day. Today "bean" Saturday, the beans were brewing in their stainless-steel pots. Six varieties - kidney, pea, Jacob's cattle. I can't remember the others. I asked for the sweetest one which was the pea. As she was ladling the beans into the cardboard container, she made sure I got a whole onion as well as the bits of salt pork that gives the beans their oomph. She also loaded me up with a calendar, a menu and, I think, a newsletter. She guided me towards the freezer where there were several pork pies (tourtière). I don't know what possessed me to buy one of those but I figured I needed one on hand "just in case". Then it dawned on me to thank my mother for all of her wonderful meals and give this to her for Christmas. Now, I am not convinced this is the tastiest coleslaw I've ever had - at least I don't detect the unpleasant flavor of celery seeds/salt in the coleslaw. I like mine tons more onion-y and a bit sweeter. So far the best recipe I've come across is from Brother Juniper's cookbook from the mid-1990s. I think this is one of the most thorough and well-written cookbooks out there but it is out of print so your best bet is to buy it on Amazon. The Cole slaw recipe is super simple and you'll be amazed at the results. read more

I enjoy the cream pies and meat pies but don't recommend their fruit pies. The strawberry rhubarb pie was like eating strawberry jam in a pie, and the blueberry had a lot of liquid and didn't hold together like it should. I always find the cakes to be dry and the frosting too sweet. I also don't think that their cakes look professionally decorated but more amateur. I don't order the cakes here anymore. Grants Bakery in Lewiston is a great bakery, and if you want a picture of your child, family member or friend they can actually put it on the top of the cake! My husband is currently working in Lewiston, Maine which is a very long way from Houston, TX where we live. I had been otherwise occupied when I realized (6pm Houston time) that his birthday was the very next day. I searched for bakeries in Lewiston and found Grant's. Not really believing that they could help me, I e-mailed them anyway. I must have had an angel on my shoulder because the next morning I received a reply indicating that they would do everything that they could. I called and spoke to a wonderful lady, Katie, who really made my concerns disappear. Her advice was perfect. They delivered a specially designed red velvet cake, balloons, and a delicious (his review) chicken pie to his hotel that early evening. My husband has been there a couple of times for work, then comes home for a couple of days then back up to Lewiston. And he has told me how very nice everyone has been to him.
