This is a regular meeting place for myself and friends. The food is usually good and the menu reliable. Once again I had the petite filet mignon, medium rare and cooked to perfect. The vegetable medley was cooked just right, and flavorful. One of my dining companions had the calmari which he proclaimed tasty. The hostess and server were friendly and helpful. I took my mom to Grassfields in Waltham today for her birthday because she has so many wonderful memories of going there with her friends over the years. Since she can no longer drive, we wanted to make the day special for her. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from start to finish. When we arrived around 2:30 PM, the restaurant was nearly empty, yet we waited quite a while just to be acknowledged. The hostess then attempted to seat us practically on top of another table, directly within earshot of the server station, despite the dining room being mostly empty. To make matters worse, it was the only table with mismatched chairs. She offered a couple other tables that also didn't work, then had us stand there another seven minutes waiting for a manager to reset a different table while she simply stood by doing nothing. Because it was a holiday, they were serving the dinner menu all day. Totally understandable -- staffing on holidays is hard, and I had no issue paying dinner prices during lunch hours. The problem was the level of service absolutely did not match the pricing or reputation. Once seated, service moved painfully slow. It took forever just to place a drink order, let alone actually receive drinks. Our waitress never asked if we wanted appetizers, which we did, so we ended up ordering everything together. My mom mentioned multiple times that it was her birthday, including when drinks were ordered, yet there was zero acknowledgment from the restaurant afterward. We also had to ask for bread. Again, if it were lunch service, fine -- but we were paying full dinner pricing, and bread service should have been automatic. The appetizers were decent, but after that, service completely disappeared. No one checked on drink refills, and our entrees arrived while my father and I had completely empty glasses. Beverage refills should have been offered before entrees hit the table, not after guests are already eating dry meals. By the time my replacement drink arrived, I had finished my meal. Food itself was mediocre at best: * I ordered lamb medium rare and it arrived medium/well. * No steak knife was provided. * No horseradish accompanied the lamb until I specifically asked. * My husband and mother ordered the surf & turf with lobster pie and tips, and the lobster pie came out visibly burnt. Everyone was hungry, so we ate it, but nothing about the meal justified a nearly $250 bill for four people at lunch. The most frustrating part? There was no management presence whatsoever. No table touches, no check-ins, no acknowledgment of my mother's birthday. The manager spent most of the time standing off in the corner while servers chatted loudly in the server station about coworkers and guests -- exactly why people don't want to sit near server areas in the first place. This is a very special review, being the first in my "Eat the Distance" project. Grassfields has been my Honky Tonk for a few years though this is my first visit for a proper meal. Crowded as usual with regulars and locals, this is truly a "village tier" establishment far from the beaten path of travelers and the jet-set. Though grateful for the keto options I was mystified: they bill themselves as a steak and seafood spot but menu was quite sparse on the beef options; no ribeye, "grass fed" appearing nowhere on the laminated menu. This messaging/offering dissonance and the almost unacceptably delayed service are the primary factors contributing to the 75% evaluation. Despite these oversights the tips and petit filet were tender and flavorful, and the fresh baked complimentary bread was a lovely touch superior to what one finds at many higher rated restaurants. read more

I've been going here for years. Recently I had an awful experience. I went with a friend to have a drink after a long day. The bartender, Michelle was extremely rude. I was having a conversation with my friend she literally intervened in my personal conversation. She then proceeded to reprimand me and berate me in front of all for the personal conversation I was having with my friend. As a bartender, this was extremely unprofessional. I watched her do this with several patrons. Just incredibly unprofessional. Needless to say i won't return. Stay far away from this establishment. Went to Grassfields with the family (party of six) for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. We were seated right away and Tim was our server. We were given warm bread with butter, ordereder appetizers and our meal. Timing was perfect between appetizers and dinner. Tim is EXCEPTIONAL. He was very attentive to our party, extremely polite, courteous and professional. Definately an asset to your establishment. Will ask to sit in his area on our next visit. The food was very good as well. The petite filet mignon melts in your mouth. Portion size was either just right for the individual or a little on the large side. Time was right there with the takeout containers. We did not have to ask for anything. He was on top of it all. We were able to get seated at the bar and the service was very friendly and to the point and I certainly enjoyed my steak tips. They give a lot of food. I also enjoyed my side of rice pilaf, which is quite famous there, and the Avalanche ice cream was delicious with caramel...so good! The ambience is comfort casual but you're most likely see people in their 60s here... that's good since then know what's good and deals! A staple in Waltham. Been coming here for years and there hasn't been a meal I didn't like. Service is always fast too. I always start with either the zucchini sticks or spinach and artichoke dip for my appetizer. Plus their loaf of bread!! My go to entrees are either the chicken breast teriyaki with the rice pilaf or the teriyaki steak tips! These are their staples in my opinion. Their panko crusted chicken is also great as well as their crabmeat pie...yum. Their menu is classic and there's something everyone will love--burgers, steak, chicken, fish, salads! Topped off with a romantic ambiance that makes it a good date spot or just a night out with the family. This restaurant owns other places nearby too with similar menus. We have been going to Grassfields in waltham since they opened maybe in the 90s. Their best dish by far is the broiled scallops and rice pilaf. We get it every time we go and are NEVER disappointed. After all these years I realized I never have written a Yelp review. But today our service was stellar and so shout out to our server Tim. He is clearly a lifetime professional and knows exactly how to support his customers. That said there are many great servers at Grassfields and while he's not the exception tonight I decided it was time for a shoutout. Give him a raise! Back to the food. To be fair to this establishment, I've gone here many times and have had exceptional meals with excellent service. I'm only taking the time now to talk about my experience at Grassfield's yesterday because I hope this can serve as one of those proverbial "teachable moments." Bottom line, my nine-year-old son and I stopped here for dinner last night (April 19, 2023) and an around middle-aged waitress served us. To her credit, she looked very busy so I don't blame her for not being all that attentive to us. Prices seem to have gone up so I decided to get a cheeseburger instead of the scrod I usually order and my son, being nine, is a picky eater, but has raved about the deliciousness of Grassfields' burgers before, so he asked for a, "....plain hamburger, just the meat and the bun" with a side of fries. I went with a cheeseburger with a side of rice. Both of us asked for medium. They brought my boy a burnt patty with no bread whatsoever. Not a huge issue because once the waitress dropped it off, we brought it up right away and she went back to get a hamburger bun so that my kid could start to TRY and enjoy his food. Generally-speaking, when someone's looking for a medium burger, it's because they don't like their meat overcooked.... but for some reason, both of our burgers came out burnt to a crisp. The black surfaces of the burgers were such that we both tried to surgically remove the burnt spots with our knives, but the overall effort proved disastrous. I had hoped that the waitress would check to see how everything was, but she never did, so we worked with our meal as best we could.... and when she finally DID come around to collect our plates at the END of the meal, I thought for sure she would have noticed my son's barely eaten burger and the charred remnants of mine. Nope. Not a word. So, here's my suggestion... and I hope it's taken constructively as it is intended... but please look at what you're carting away. Many people, including us, were taught old school values like... not bitching about our food and doing our best not to WASTE the food that we get, so if you see that most of one burger is left uneaten and that a specific effort was made to trim carcinogenic charred beef from the other one, at least ASK if anything was amiss. I'd have likely tipped triple the amount that I did if she'd just thought to ask, but..... twas not to be I suppose. Sad, because Grassfields burgers are usually very good. Yet, the one I had was easily the worst burger I've had in at least ten years. So, please..... check in on your patrons and if you see something that doesn't look quite right, ASK. PLEASE. read more

Ordered teriyaki steak-tips rare- came out medium rare, couldn't flag down the server because she seemed to have disappeared. My girlfriends salmon came out good, her vegetables however were drenched in oil. The bread we received was hard and hollow in some parts- we could hardly eat it. Cozy place, nice service, yummy appetizers , great prices, two very burnt burgers (asked for medium, got medium burnt to crisp).

To start with, our server Sara was super friendly and generally great so a big shout out to her. This place hasn't changed or added to the menu in 30 years it seems and this was verified by some of the staff! The medium rare burger was gray inside and had the texture of a hockey puck without the flavor sewn by some sweaty skaters! Basically it was a frozen beef patty grilled till it was tough. No flavor and not cooked at all to the requested doneness. The broiled scallops were again so badly over cooked. Dry and practically rubbery. The lobster pie was decent enough but rather bland. Back calls it seemed to be frozen lobster meat baked in butter (or was it margarine ???). Again it was rather bland although the lobster meat at least wasn't cooked till it turned to cow hide. Again, the waitress Sara was friendly and appropriately attentive. What's crazy is that on a Saturday night the place was packed! Seriously with a waitlist of 10 tables or more. This is just insane given the good to great restaurants within a mile of here. I will say that the average patron seems to have been coming here for 40!or more years and probably isn't into good food but rather enjoys the same food gramma treated them to in 1970. We just love this restaurant! I was at Capital Grille a few weeks ago and got their salmon, spent twice as much as I do at Grassfields and it was not half as good as Grassfields in Waltham!! No one can beat the appetizers at Grassfields! Tonight Tim O'Connor talked us into having the special popcorn shrimp! They were amazing and there were so many of them! Like a meal! I came here with my parents for lunch on a Saturday. There was no wait. I was really amused to see that I was the youngest person there by a long-shot! We ordered the marinated steak tips (medium rare), scallops Florentine, and broiled sea scallops. The steak tips had a perfect warm pink center. The texture was great. But, it did taste pretty plain. I was tempted to ask for A1 sauce. The broiled sea scallops were very tender and delicious. The bread crumbs on the side were light and weren't too greasy. This was my favorite dish that we got. The scallops Florentine was also delicious. It tasted very buttery, and I'm glad it came with so much spinach. All three dishes came with a side of rice pilaf which was SO GOOD. The rice was DEFINITELY the best part of this meal! Overall, we had a great time and thought the food was very well done. Grassfields Waltham is just ok. I had a Ceasar with a piece of salmon and neither had much taste. My parents enjoyed their fish and chips and my wife was happy with her chicken sanwhich. We were seated in a booth that was not designed for 4 people! I had to hang my legs out in the aisle the entire meal. One thing that irked me was the club soda with a splash of cranberry that I ordered. Food was decent, service was garbage. Waitress was rude and did the bare minimum then had the gall to try and ask us for a bigger tip! Our waitress only brought us our food. She never filled our waters, never checked in on us, and acted like everything we asked for was a burden. We asked for butter and it never came. One of our group asked to order food to go (because they had to leave earlier than everyone else) while we ordered our main meal and she acted like it was a huge inconvenience and didn't take their order until after our meals were delivered about 20 min later. She was generally rude and provided no service outside of taking our order and bringing the food. Then she had the audacity to come to our table and complain about the 10% tip we left, which honestly was more than she deserved. I was here on a Tuesday afternoon with a party of 14 people, following a family funeral. The wait staff were great and handled us with accuracy and professionalism. The food from the lunch menu was reasonable priced and was excellent. Some of us had broiled scallops, lobster roll, various burgers and appetizers. Everyone was pleased with their meal. As an out-of-towner trying to find the right place that could please everyone, this place did not disappoint. My only complaint was that the pre-calculated tip was based on the total, including taxes. The tip should have been based on the pre-tax total. I didn't notice this until after we'd left the place. What! I haven't review this restaurant yet? I'm shocked. This is my all time favorite restaurant. I used to go here for years and have their broiled salmon served with dill sauce and a side of spinach rice; usually paired with a glass of red wine or their special cocktails! They serve complimentary bread (freshhhhh) with butter, which I usually avoid because I am trying to reduce carb intake, but the bread and butter are delicious too! The broiled salmon with dill sauce is extraordinarily delicious. I feel like I am gonna drive to the restaurant right after finishing the review. The staff is very friendly. I have been going here since the past 8 years. The quality hasn't changed; still the best! Also, I am not the only one who feels this. I can say that with confidence because I always see repeat customers here. Well, they come back for a reason, don't they! However, my opinion is that the prices went UP and the quality of the food and service WAY DOWN! Today, my mother wanted to order from there for lunch. We ordered and I asked for BROILED Sea Scallops!!! It doesn't even sounds like FRIED! I repeated it again! BROILED!!! sure enough I got FRIED scallops which my mother cannot eat. Do not even bother coming to this Gross restaurant not only do they not push out the food in quality consistent order, but they sit there and try to rob customers by manipulating them into overcharging them. Probably not the best place to order "just a salad," but I opted for the goat cheese spinach salad and it was tasty. It was mostly spinach, cheese and dressing, though and very light on the strawberries and pecans which was a bummer. The candied pecans were delicious and maybe 3 strawberries and a total of 2 halfed baby tomatoes were included. Filled me up though so was a solid lunch option without being too heavy. read more
