I work downtown and love supporting local businesses. On numerous occasions coffee runs out. Today I had a little bit of all 3 offerings because they ran out of all 3 coffee carafes and my cup was still not full. Love the bagels but I need my coffee and I will have to go where they are prepared for the morning business. Not that difficult to keep drip coffee stocked I know since I managed a Starbucks for 8yrs. Need more of a sense of urgency here and that the customers time is valuable. Grateful bagel on 4rth street is my absolute favorite place to eat on the weekends! Whether it's for breakfast or lunch it's always delicious. The fresh bagels are the best in Sonoma county. The young female (I think her name is chandler?) who works there every weekend it's so personable, and though I always have big orders she graciously takes on the task even when she's working by herself. I'm local and stop in here 1-3 timer per week. Bagel sandwiches are always so delicious to the point I want to call them and tell him how much I enjoyed it (I always get it to go.) Thai tea is also fantastic and they have nondairy options which is appreciated. Most of the employees in here seem to be young (18 to 25) but are still professional and courteous. They aren't bubbly and fake like some other reviewers might prefer. I have never experienced a very long wait time like some of the other reviewers mention. I was there this morning and a woman was breaking eggs into a plastic container. There may have been fifty eggs there that she hadn't yet mixed up. This to answer the question of the reviewer who incorrectly speculated that the eggs where some chemical fakery. They're not. They're actual eggs. By far the worst customer service I have ever experienced not only arguring when I told the girl she didn't wash her hands she actually rolled her eyes . The whole business is suspect . Not only are all but 2 outside chairs broken the seating area is placed with no rhyme or reason. The workers have horrible hygiene dont comb hair and show up in what looks like pajamas . They dont wash they're hands or use gloves after handeling money. I have personally seen flies in the food case. Rap music with curse words blare so loud you almost have to yell to order. Management is utterly non-existent , and I have seen the owners maybe 3 times since opening. officially boycotting this place. read more

Wanted to try Greatful Bagel but didnt get a chance. Walked in and the 2 girls behind the counter were working on making some drinks. No biggie, I waited patiently. And waited, and waited and waited. After about 4 minutes of one of them looked at me and said, "Good Morning, we'll be right with you". So I waited some more. Another customer walked in behind me. All of the sudden one of the girls ask the women behind me what she wanted and proceeded to serve her first and not even acknowledge me. Walked out. I am literally BEGGING the management to read this review. Please for the love all that is holy you really really need to change your practices. 1. Teach your employees about customer service. These girls (I've only ever seen young white girls working here? Why?) embarrass themselves every time I come in. They are wearing pajamas (how hard is it to get them some polos and jeans???) their hair is always flying about, they lack basic knowledge of greeting and taking orders from guests (they always seem nervous and overwhelmed and disorganized, they won't look at you until you're belly up to the counter, they cannot seem to even keep simple orders straight even as they are writing them down). It is EXTREMELY clear that these girls have lacked even basic instruction from day one on how to properly complete their tasks. I am not in any way blaming these girls. It is apparent that something has been lost in translation in the management because every single girl does her job just as poorly as the last one. 2. When people ask for bagels to go we never ever want just a wrapped up bagel in parchment paper. Literally why are you doing this. Please at least tape the ends shut or better yet, go to any other bagel shop on earth and notice that they wrap your bagel in plastic wrap, put it in a paper bag (which, if given the option, I might want to pay for) and top it off with napkins. It is unbelievable to me that if I ask for a bagel to go I just get handed a bagel with paper falling off of it??????? This, again is clearly the ignorance of the management, not their unfortunate employees. 3. Every single sandwich I've gotten here handles like it was baby's first try. Honestly, have you never been to any other deli? The joy of eating a very tasty sandwich (which some of yours are) is entirely negated when it won't stay on the bagel. Or if the bacon is literally flakey (I have no idea how this happens) or if the lettuce is dripping wet. Or if the chicken salad is mealy (I really don't mean to be rude but the public has to know). I strongly suggest that the management takes a training day for themselves and goes around to other delis in Santa Rosa and test-drives some sandwiches. It's not hard to step up your game in this aspect and doesn't even require you to change your menu or get more expensive ingredients or literally anything except teach your girls to make better proportioned sandwiches. Its free and will boost our (the customers) experience tenfold. Well-made sandwiches can be found at: Perry's on Mendo, Honey Sliced Ham next to Snoopys, and the now defunct Pearson & Co; (horrendous quality, great craftsmanship) they might be opening up in Bodega. P&Co still caters. 4. Your employees NEED signage for the bagels in the case. Every single time I ask any question about a bagel I don't immediately recognize (I like the crazy ones, and you do have good specialty bagels) it seems as if its anyone's best guess. It is cruel and unfair to give so little information to your employees. I'm really not sure what the fantasy is here but its asinine to have both NO signage and employees that don't know what they're serving. I'm not sure why or even how this issue has yet to be addressed? 5. I come here a lot. Clearly. I have also worked in food service my whole life. I've done every job that there is to do in cafes, delis, restaurants and tasting rooms (every single bitter jerk on yelp says that but its true). I have never in my life considered taking 10+ minutes to make a sandwich. I've also never seen girls so entirely unequipped to do their jobs. This builds on point 3. If you know how to make a sandwich well, it should not take you 10 minutes per sandwich. This is not an exaggeration. It's like the twilight zone in here while you're waiting for your sandwich. I just honestly cannot believe it. I don't even get my bagels toasted! This is the closest bagel shop to my house and I really really want you to succeed but it seems as if the management actually wants this place to fail. It's a bit sad really. I always leave a tip for the poor girls that work there and I want to make it very clear that they shouldn't feel badly about this but they could seriously do much better elsewhere and probably make a lot more money while they're at it. If what some other dude on yelp said is true and it's owned by the same people as Joe's, (the coffee shop on Mendo that charges you $2.00 for 8oz of hot water for tea even when you have both the tea bag and the cup that you brought from home?????) then I'm honestly not surprised by this carelessness and unprofessionalism and clear sense of self-righteousness that translates into utter disrespect for their employees and ignorance of their customers needs. It would be so easy for these girls to open up shop every morning and kill it all day selling super crazy good bagels. The only thing standing in the way are the management practices in your shop. read more

I walked into this place today 1/4/14, because the door was open and I wanted to buy some day old bagels and the girl working was very rude and said"we are closed!" I asked if I could buy a bag of bagels and she said "no, we are closed". I asked if she was the manager and she said she was!! BAD!! When do businesses turn down sales? Bad idea!!! I am a Grateful Bagel fan and have been as long as they've been around and would love too support them, but the very rude "manager" makes me not want to go there!! I am very sad! read more

It is unfortunate to see Grateful Bagel's Yelp profile steadily declining, but I must say it is most deserved. I co-manage a downtown SR business, and I've seen the customer experience here go from mediocre to frustrating to downright dreadful. The coffee, sandwiches and pastries are usually nice and fresh- but that's what one star is for. The young ladies working in this place are now almost comically inept in their inability to perform basic customer service-related tasks ranging from engaging customers to filling orders correctly. This place jumped the shark awhile back, but what I had to endure just to get a plain ol' bagel yesterday was actually absurd enough for me to write a review. I felt embarrassed for them. I feel that two employees serving 4 customers should be able to acknowledge me within 5 mins of standing at their counter- especially when I'm a neighbor and regular customer. I don't expect anyone to act deferential towards me, but I'm constantly taken aback at their lack of awareness and now the service is equally poor. I have now stopped going in here. read more
