Since one reviewer gave a bad review based on not understanding the menu I want to get one thing out of the way: BBQ is only on Sundays! If you come on any other day I'm sure the food is amazing but is NOT BBQ. It's still going to be comfort food, I imagine. This place is truly a gem - really good food served in a super un-pretentious setting: essentially a nice diner. The staff is attentive and the BBQ was really excellent. I'm from Texas and so my expectations up here generally aren't high, but this stuff was really good! No brisket, but the pulled pork was on point and the sausage had a perfect amount of spice to it. The ribs were a little sweet for my taste, but still really good. The mac and cheese muffin that came with it was a big highlight and I loved that there were also collard greens and cornbread - this place is not afraid to go traditional with its BBQ. Oh, and the carrot cake we had for dessert was ridiculous. We were sharing it 3 ways, but with how fast we were eating it you'd think we were in a battle with each other! Our 2nd time here and it was just as delightful as the first! So happy to make it to bbq Sunday! Started with the wedge and smoked trout salad, both had great balance and amazing house made dressings. My husband and I recently celebrated my birthday on Vashon Island. For the past ten years we have been vacationing at https://cottageparadise.com and have seen many changes in restaurants. We were getting pretty tired of the Hardware Store Restaurant, which can be a hit or miss, depending on the chef. Every once in awhile you come across a restaurant that you can't wait to go back to. That is what Gravy's is like. I love a restaurant that switches up the menu and offers really good wines by the glass, and not just the normal boring chardonnay. We plan to keep coming to Vashon for another ten years and i have a feeling that like someone else said here, Gravy's is here to stay. We certainly hope so! read more

This place was lovely! The food was great (hard to decide what to order!), atmosphere chill, very nice wines. We had a great time. Had the Wedge (excellent!) and cornbread to start. The cornbread is wood fired - was quite tasty. Spouse had fried chicken and potatoes, I had market fish of salmon with potatoes and green beans. Both very good. Watching chef Dre progress over the last 6 years, I have followed him to eat at every restaurant he has ran, and I have to say that this is by far his most amazing accomplishment. Gravy is a totally satisfying dining experience. The food is excellent and the service is professional. It sort of sits in a middle-ground between casual and upscale dining. It's a nicely appointed Honda Accord, not a fully loaded Acura. It is casual enough for families, but swanky enough for a great date night. I've had the BBQ and fried chicken there and both were very tasty. (The dishes both seems small when they arrived, but proved filling.) They also have one or two reasonable vegetarian options. If your whole party is vegetarian you probably have better options, but if you have one vegetarian in the group then you'll be fine. One wish - they could use more diverse beer options. A deeper list of craft beers that reach outside the glut of PNW IPAs would be stellar. read more

Favorite hang out on Vashon. Dre and Pepa always make us feel welcome and special every time we walk in. I'm sure Sunday BBQ and the Trifecta burger get plenty of love on yelp and both of things deserve all the praise you could pile on but the more ambitious dishes showing up are 1000% worth gravitating towards. Cooking over an open wood flame elevates the cuisine to the next level. You can tell Dre and Pepa are having a ton of fun and I am so happy to be in on it as often as possible. read more

Seriously one of the best dinners I've had in my life. The menu is eclectic with a nice hint of Southern meets French cuisine. Sundays features an exclusive BBQ menu, but otherwise the food prepared in its open kitchen could not be more meticulously made. Tonight's fresh fish was the always hard to find Artic Char, crisp and clean in its flavor with a lemony, light butter sauce. Served with a handful of fresh chard and hand-rolled gnocchi with a tart taste of tarragon was outstanding. But if you want a burger that will consume your meaty fantasies for days and weeks to come then you have found your place. I mean no hyperbole to the millions who always claim "best burger on the planet" status to a favorite place, but the Trifecta burger here is a work of animal art. Fatty duck breast and smoked ham hock meat is blended with top sirloin, cooked to a medium brilliance and served with wilted dandelion greens on a buttery brioche. Every bite was an entry into the heart pulsing gates of hamburger heaven. Smoky and satisfying beyond. Local beer and wine and the friendliest staff you'll ever encounter round out this casually brilliant experience. Go and go. read more

Ordered the fried chicken meal for takeout with a 5:45pm pickup time. The chicken was stone cold and clearly fried much earlier in the day. The sides were tasty but the chicken was supposed to be the star of the meal. Instead, it was cold and so disappointing as fried food tends to be when it's not cooked to order. read more

Not really sure why people are crazy about this place. Service 4/5- servers were friendly enough Food 3/5 mediocre at best. Burger wasn't good at all. Even the patty was missing the "meat" flavor. The bun was burnt, not toasted. For $17 it was A HARD PASS Sirloin was dry even cooked medium, the veggies that came with it was a lot better. Did not even opt for dessert as I was scared it wouldn't be good either. Honestly opted for a slice of cake over at Thriftway and I was happy. Value 2/5- for the money you pay, you think you should be happier when you leave. Would not recommend and would not come back. I say spend money elsewhere. read more

Jewish Comfort Food with a Twist : Many times I've thought that the best of Jewish comfort cuisine would be wonderful. But it never materializes. However, on Vashon, it's one of the many great food options now available. In the space that housed the iconic Express Cuisine on the main drag, we had potato latkis, noodle kugel, and a stellar brisket reuben. Seriously, all three were absolutely delicious and memorable. Please check it out for this type of food needs an audience or it goes by the wayside. And that would be a huge loss. read more

We've dined here three times and have been equally impressed with each visit. The pork chop is as good as they get, cooked and seasoned to perfection with inventive accompaniments, Delish! The steak is fab, black eye pea falafel, wedge salad, fish sandwich, it's all great! Service is always friendly and just attentive enough that you don't feel hovered upon. Only wish they had a liqueur license that would allow them to make cocktails, but for now the beers & wines are thoughtfully chosen. Love having Gravy on the island! read more

Upon sitting down, my party did not want to spend that much on lunch, so we ordered coffee and decided to leave. The waitress hurriedly took everything off of our table while we sat there, and the older lady who I assume manages the place, was whispering to her staff about us because they would then turn to laugh while looking at us. So extremely rude. She continued to whisper to people around the room and then look at us. I am appalled at your behavior and am happy to give a bad rating. Money isn't our issue, we just didn't want to spend that much that day. Zombiez down the street was a way more fun atmosphere and didn't make anyone feel bad about anything. And our group is "lively" as you put in your response to my friend, we're not stuffy and rude like this place of business. read more

This restaurant so badly wants to be good. There are some pretty good things here, but it's all overshadowed by the fact that the quality doesn't match the price. I grew up in barbecue country, and was excited to show up for Sunday BBQ dinner. The unfortunate thing was that the actual 'cue was about as far as you can get from it. There were no grill marks or smokey taste, leading me to question if it was cooked in an oven at the wrong heat. Also, the rib meat was a tough struggle to chew through; a far cry from the fall apart, butter like texture I'm used to from barbecue. The sauce was also offensively salty with not much else to offer. The dish also boasted some of the saddest cornbread I've ever had. Harsh, but unfortunately true. A plate not worth $28 dollars, not including the $10 "wedge" salad as a starter that had obviously canned beets on the side. The best thing on the plate was the potato salad. I'll be taking some cues from it for my next batch. The burger and house salad were good. Maybe not $18 good, but good enough to finish. I think this place is super nice aesthetically. Whoever designed the interior really does take pride in their work and have a lot of confidence in the business. I hope that it finds more suitable techniques for the food it offers and improves as it goes along. However, I probably won't be returning any time soon before then. read more

Gravy was easily the best restaurant I visited at Vashon over a long weekend. My wife and I had the following: - octopus salad - seemingly simple salad of smoky, grilled octopus, chickpeas (so much flavor, forget the can!), and some greens and carrots. However, the chefs prepared each ingredient perfectly and balanced the flavors and textures really well. - trifecta burger (sirloin, ham hock, and duck breast that night) - no-nonsense burger, but great depth of flavor with the three meats. Similar to the octopus salad, the burger was prepared flawlessly, with a juicy interior and great char. - shrimp and grits - the star of the show for me. Plump, meaty, sweet shrimp on top of braised collard greens, grits, and an andoiulle broth. Just like both other dishes, perfect preparation and care for the ingredients. Also, best shrimp I've had in awhile. The wine list was tight, reasonable, and well chosen. We will definitely be back to Gravy when we return to Vashon. I just wish it had an output in Seattle. read more

Definitely not worth it! Took my family for Memorial day dinner. The food isn't up to standard with the pricing, don't go there hungry, very small portions, for salmon worth $30. They have a fixed menu with only 6 main meals, can't even offer a side of fries, not flexible. Overpriced and overrated! read more

Maybe we just went on an off day but my veggie burger was burnt, my son's burger was burnt. We barely had any service at all and finally had to walk up to the counter to pay after looking at our dirty dishes for over 20 mins. If you're coming to Vashon, or live here, and are looking for good local food this is the place to be. They have an open kitchen, so you can watch them cooking your food if you sit at the bar. If you don't like or have never tried brussel sprouts, Dre is the one to get you hooked. Whether they're grilled or deep fried, I can't get enough. I wanted to give this place **** for the super friendly service but unfortunately, the good food is simply overpriced. I had the seafood pasta Alfredo and my wife enjoyed her pork tenderloin, both notably without gravy. They should lower the price about 20% and serve some warm, crunchy bread with the meal. In addition, when wine was offered, all I saw on their chalk board were generic wine appellations, e.g., "CABERNET," without specifying the vineyard or the year. Why would I pay $14 for a simple glass of unspecified Cabernet? Again, the waitress and owner were very welcoming and attentive. Get the snack plate, drink some wine, and get at least one person at your table to order the burger which is very special. We're lucky to have this restaurant on Vashon. Great spot! Excellent gluten free choices including wonderful desserts. The service was great. Our server made some nice suggestions. The menu is limited, but fresh and well prepared. I just returned from 10 days in Europe where I ate every meal out. I had street food, cafe food and dinners in very fine restaurants. My first meal back in the States was at Gravy. Chef Dre magically takes everything that's great about all of those kinds of eating and puts it all together on the Gravy menu. It's highbrow, lowbrow and everything in between. And it's absolutely delicious and satisfying. Everything has a little twist, but not just for twists's sake. Dre twists things to make them better and you will wonder why pork chops are not always topped with homemade grape marmalade. Just go and eat. Make the trip to Vashon for a meal at Gravy. Excellent food and service to match! We had the seafood risotto and the Wagyu sirloin.the food was out fairly quickly and tasted amazing. My husband and I have eaten at Gravy many times since it opened ~2 yrs ago. We love it. We sit at the counter where it's fun to watch the grilling, assembly of salads and desserts. Owners Dre (chef) and Pepa (front of the house) live on the island. So they try source from the Vashon as much as possible. Favorites: Fried (!) brussels sprouts with tahini sauce and some hotter sauce for dipping. These are like eating candy but they are veggies. Chacuterie plate includes various meats like salami, Italian ham, etc with grilled rustic bread, spiced nuts, and fruit jams; trifecta burger-a combination of 3 ground meats served on a good bun with side salad; sardines with pickled onions and grilled bread; fried oysters sandwich/salad. Delicious! Sundays is BBQ day. Shorter menu. Combo is huge and enough for 2 people/2 meals. Dre does all his own smoking and sauces. Served potato salad. Cornbread. There are vegetarian choices also. Wines by glass or bottle are reasonable. Beer and cider. Casual atmosphere where the owners seem to know all the customers by name. Families bring kids. read more

Gravy is the the best food you will find on Vashon, hands down. If you want to experience what good food is supposed to be on Vashon, go here. Beet Salad, perfect. The texture, what it is supposed to be. The arugula peppery, the citrus and mild yogurt combination, delicious not overwhelming and not ostentatious, a sincere coupling. The steak with carrot latke, perfect. All of this on manageable plates that left you satisfied but not over-filled. And finally, the flourless chocolate cake, the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. Fantastic seasonal pairings on everything. This accompanied by generous pours of prosecco and yes, genuine french press coffee at completely reasonable prices makes this small restaurant the darling of Vashon. My one complaint, a limited selection of red, but it's a process! The management is engaged, considerate in their recommendations and very friendly. It would be foolish not to eat here if you are on the island (it's worth the trip from Seattle too) I'm excited to come back! I can't believe we've missed this one for so long. read more

I love this place. Delicious food and a fancy-homestyle vibe. I've only been here twice, but both times have exceeded our expectations. First visit was on a Sunday and I enjoyed the barbecue dinner. It was delicious! Tonight I enjoyed the cheese plate, cornbread, octopus salad, and the super-flavorful trifecta burger. Every aspect of the dinner was fantastic. Very very good. I got the burger, which is simple but delicious. The charbroil flavor really comes through, and they do a great job just highlighting the ingredients. I'd love to come back and try their Sunday bbq some day. Also, I had originally reserved a table (they only take reservations for parties larger than 6), and we were missing 2 and dropped to 5. I called them to update, and they honored our reservation without question. That's exactly what I would expect, but explicitly calling it out because I can see think of some places that would be unaccommodating with something like that. read more
