I have been coming to Bishop for years and everyone knows about the famous bakery in town. So some local climbers told us we were missing out on Great Basin. This bakery is AMAZING--you must stop by if you are vacationing in the area or even just passing through. We were only in Bishop for two nights and went there twice--we can personally verify that their fresh-baked bread, bagels, croissants and cinnamon rolls and even their kale salad were all delicious. We stopped in Bishop on the way back from Truckee for a quick lunch. The "world famous bakery" up the road was too busy, thus, we ended up at Great Basin. Surprise! Our sandwich-their version of BLT-was wonderful: chock full of goodies including thick, crispy pieces of bacon & avocado between two pieces of their sour dough. Wow! We decided to try their mini cinnamon round, and it was perfect: chewy and crispy and soft all at the right combination & it was not too sweet. We had to try something else, and we grabbed a bag of Cowgirl Cookies to have in the car. We finished the bag in minutes! Wait. That was not all. After all this happy experience, we got home, and as we unloaded the car, I discovered my purse was missing. I had to backtrack our steps on 395 & call Great Basin just to check whether I left my purse 300 miles away from home. Sadly, the answer was yes. Ouch! "Can you please mail it to me? I will reimburse the cost as soon as possible?" I asked. The cheerful response I got was, "no problem! We will mail it to you ASAP. Don't worry about the cost. We are just happy that you got home safely!" Did I hear it right? I am telling all my friends about this bakery, and they are now all committed to take the road 395 whenever they drive up north so that they can stop at the Great Basin Bakery and enjoy the great sandwich and baked goods. Was in Bishop for vacation. Ended up running into to friends of the owner of this bakery (and eventually the owner herself). Decided to pick up some cookies on the way out of town. They are delicious. Can't recommend the Rosemary Shortbread cookie enough. read more

My husband and I stumbled upon this little gem while staying in bishop this week. It was 3:50pm and the door said closing at 4:00. The lady who helped us was so nice! We never felt rushed to make our selection. Although there was very few baked goods left (that's always a good sign) we were pleased with our choices. We are lucky to have Great Basin Bakery here in Bishop, with many delicious baked goods, sandwiches and breads, love the seeded baguettes. The many varieties of bagels are always delicious. They do a great job serving the locals as well as the tourist population. Sure it gets crowded at times, and curbside parking can be challenging but there is a public parking lot just west to the corner, take a right, north, then drive 300' I have never seen this lot half full. Honestly, this place is better than Schats but the employees are extremely rude. If you don't want to greet me with a smile then DONT work with people! This place needs to have a serious talk with their workers and set things straight. They made me feel very uncomfortable and I will not come back. This is a fantastic bakery, way better than Schat's. It isn't touristy or high end but the food is great. Everyone who works there is very friendly and it is nice to support a local business that didn't make it from their heritage. I only go to Great Basin for my bread or pastries. Their sour dough bread is wonderful and their gluten free cookies can't be beat and I'm not gluten free. Highly recommend!!! read more

The fun part is finding Great Basin Bakery. Their address is on Main, BUT you won't see the storefront. You need to look up and see a sign that says BAKERY with and arrow pointing the direction. The storefront is nothing to brag about. You will see a couple of chairs and tables and you say to yourself is this the place that people rave about. Once you get over the disappointment go in get serious. I go there to buy the bread. Their breads are fresh and sometimes you have to wait for them to cool off before you can buy one. The multigrain bread has great flavor and loaded with whole grains. They also sell sourdough and other artisan breads. Get there early as they make only enough that they can sell in a day. I have been there in the afternoon and they tell me that they are sold out for the day and come back tomorrow. read more

That lady that was "serving" us was rude and honestly I have never been treated more rudely at any type of food joint. As far the bakery goes I think that it is pretty good. I wanted a sandwich or something savory and it was breakfast time and they do not serve sandwiches yet and everything is pretty much sweet, but anyways the only savory thing they had was a spinach feta artichoke croissant which seemed like it was 75% croissant. I really just wanted more spinach, feta, and artichoke. My family will probably come here again, but I don't know if I will get something. read more

Why go to Schatts when you can come here, get great food, and support local families in Bishop??! I am a regular visitor to the city of Bishop and visiting this place is always a must! They have a good variety of bagels and cream cheeses, the cheese bagels are just a tad greasy but still delicious!! The cookies and trail mixes are good too if you're on your way to the trailhead. I usually go for the spinach artichoke croissant which is also a bit greasy but sooooo good! Coffee and sandwiches are great as well. Try it out, its worth the long lines I promise! read more
