This place is wildly inconsistent. Sometimes you get pleasant stylist who takes the time to do a decent job. Other times you get a rude stylist who rushes and you leave looking like a gremlin who got run over by a lawnmower. Or it can be a mix of the two. Never the same people twice. However, the last time I was there, they hurt me. Not only rude and an awful haircut (looked like one of those '90s skater kid haircuts when my middle-aged ass walked out the door), but she injured me bad. Within hours, I was feeling a tickle in my throat which continued into a full fledged horrific case which took me out for a week! I was unable to work, hell I was unable to get out of bed! I don't like leaving reviews, especially not good ones but this experiment was not great at all. I wanted to I popped in today for a little trim. It was nothing crazy, so I figured why spend $60 at my regular stylist for some touch ups. I asked the stylist for some off the ends, and to touch up my face framing layers. She recommended cutting an inch off the ends and adding some light layers, I said sure why not - the bottom ends and layers turned out great. However, when she got to the front she asked if I wanted to cut my bangs. I said no, thank you, I am growing them out. I had finally grown them past my chin and just wanted to connect them to my existing face framing. She then proceeded to cut my bangs, straight across. I am not a hairstylist, but I was confused as to why she did that. I asked her if she was going to blend them in, and she said that she already did. She then said she would cut some more, but I said no I don't want to cut anymore. But she already had my hair and was cutting to fix it. She still did not cut any face framing pieces at all. At this point, I just wanted to go so I said no more please. I had hoped that when I got home and styled it the way I like it wouldn't be so bad, but unfortunately it's still bad. I thought that maybe I had asked for the wrong thing, but I always get the same cut and haven't had any issues before. I also did more research to make sure I didn't ask for the wrong style, which I did not. I'm not sure where the disconnect was, but I'm disappointed in the chunks of hair in the front, with no blending at all even after she "fixed it", especially after I asked to NOT touch the bangs. Came in for a chop cut and a style and was a little nervous at first cause what I wanted was a little complicate. I got Riyah (pardon my spelling) who I showed a few pictures to and had verh pleasant conversation. She did my hair SO well and I got exactly the cut I was looking for! I appreciated the communication so much because sometimes the stylist at other locations dont care to listen to me about how many layers I was and Riyah seemed to have alot of fun helping me with getting my hair the cool punky way I like it. For Eddie- I went to Great Clips a week ago just to get my pixie cut trimmed. Eddie sat me down in the chair and before he even picked up the scissors had a full conversation with me about my desire for my haircut, what I have and haven't liked in the past, possibilities for what I can do in the future with my color and texture, and what his plan was for my cut that day. Normally, people just pick up the clippers and ask me what number I want, but Eddie used scissors almost the whole time, and checked in with me several times during my time with him. It's also easy for a pixie cut to look masculine on women if the transition from top to bottom/hairline edges are too harsh, but Eddie took a lot of weight off while keeping everything soft and feminine. His attention to detail and genuine care for his clients is unmatched, and I will definitely be coming back to see him! It's the best haircut I've ever had from Great Clips on Lawrence Avenue. I've been coming here for a few years, and, in the past, I said that, even though I always get a new stylist, I get a good cut. Not any more. I'm not sure now whether I should ever go back, or go back and just be sure I don't get a cut from a stylist named Jade. I started coming to Great Clips because I have short, thin, baby fine hair. It literally takes little more than five minutes to get a decent cut. Now I know it takes the same amount of time to get a lousy cut. It wasn't till I got home that I realized that the length is uneven; that there are areas where some hair is longer, and some hair is shorter. I remembered that the stylists usually take a moment to check their work and make sure everything is even before I leave. Jade didn't do that. What makes this even worse is 1) the price for the senior cut went up by $3.00 since I was last there, and 2) I tipped Jade $2.00 for a lousy, lazy cut. I feel like I really got ripped off. I'm not a fussy guy and I've lost more hair then I have, so haircuts are maintenance at best. I just got a coupon book with $5 off a week ago to this location. I went in and they said it expired last month, mid August. I said that's impossible, I got it last week, less than week. I was told that I was wrong and I must have gotten it my mail a month or two early. I just moved into my apartment at the beginning of the month. Not really into being accused of things at businesses I frequent. So I'm not gonna frequent this place over a $5 squabble. read more

Okay, let's start with what you're probably thinking - it's a Great Clips so the cuts aren't that good. And maybe you're thinking that this is just another chain coming to take out the independent shops in Lincoln Square. And to you folks, I say - you're probably right. However I rather enjoyed the cut I received at this location. The shop is brand new, so everything was fresh and clean. The service was excellent (they brought in stylists from other Great Clips to easy the transition) and the Online Check In was actually pretty cool. Instead of sitting there waiting for a cut, I checked in online and showed up exactly when it told me to and I was escorted right to a chair in front of other people. It's a time saver. As for the not so good cuts, I think if you like your hair cut a particular way or want to pamper yourself a bit, this wouldn't be the right place. But for me, a guy who just wants a short fade cut, it's perfect. I was in and out in 20 minutes, didn't feel robbed when it came time to pay, and left knowing I'd be back. read more

My rating is in response to the customer service. We took our 2 year old son for a trim. We were greeted by being told that if he couldn't sit still, they wouldn't cut his hair. We stuck around and were playing with some of the bottles on the shelf to keep busy. We were quiet, not damaging the product and staying entertained. One of the stylists came over abruptly, obviously upset, and ripped the bottles out of my child's hands. She proceeded to put them on a shelf that he couldn't reach and walked away without saying a word. If we were being disruptive or out of line, raise your concern with me appropriately and I'll handle with my kid. Touching a child seriously crosses a line. We will not be back and I would not recommend this location for younger children. read more

Heeeeell no! Never again! I went in for a quick trim and it turned into a disaster. I showed her two pictures and even demonstrated with my hand where I wanted it cut. It was supposed to be two inches past the shoulder, she went three inches over the shoulder and it was crooked. When she finished she said that looks better on me. I went in with my 11 month old baby today. And He has serious hair growth every few months. Wanted to give Great Clips as try. I normally get it done from another local barber. I understand my baby will cry his lungs out and hates getting his haircut but never has my kid ever had a horrible haircut. The lady at the counter told me how the stylist was a pro at cutting baby hair. My baby's first birthday is around the corner and I dont know what to do. The front is uneven. And has huge DENTS. I went in spur-of-the-moment because I really wanted a haircut immediately and no one else was open or available before 10 am. The haircut was pretty bad. Not quite even and with a chunk of hair shorter in the back. I pointed this out to the hairdresser, who insisted it was just layers. I didn't make a big deal out of it because my hair grows out pretty fast and I never stress about it. But she knew -- she couldn't even look me in the eye when I paid. I desperately needed my long hair cut, but my regular salon was closed. I wanted 4" cut off in long layers and bangs trimmed. I searched around for salons that were open after 7PM. I called ahead & was told I could walk-in. Hours are super convenient! Online reservations are available. I walked there, but there is ample car parking. Extremely clean & bright. Very friendly staff. I discussed what I wanted with Susana. She skillfully cut my hair exactly as I requested. I could not be more satisfied with the result! I highly recommend Susana at this salon. I was regularly going to a small, independent salon for many years, but it closed permanently. I work late, and needed a salon with hours that fit my schedule. I have had my haircut at a franchise salon once or twice in my life, because of convenience, but it's not my preference. I was so happy with my experience here that I have decided to make this my new regular salon. Why would I pay boutique salon prices when I can get a beautiful style and great customer service for less? Convenient & affordable! read more

Big oof! I've never complained or written a review, but this one deserves it. Went in for just a little trim. I told the stylist I waned my hair to be basically the exact same as it was, just cleaned up a bit, around 1/4 - 1/2 inch off all around. Sure, hair grows back, but when she cut off TWO FULL INCHES off the top, and a good INCH+ fromt he sides and back. It's like she purposefully did the opposite of what I said. I now am forced to wear a hat for the next month or two while my hair grows back out. Never going back. First and last time there. read more

Been going here for a while. Really like the girls that work there. They are friendly & accomidating. My hair dresser's name is Belkis. She really knows how to cut hair. I totally agree with the first review- the loss of independent shops in lincoln square is horrific work on behalf of our alderpuppets. However, the location of this great clips is now, and has always been, a strip mall of whatever. And for me, the haircut I received by Rachel was better than any of the ridiculously pricy cuts I've gotten in the last decade in Chicago. In fact, she fixed the mess created by a stylist who decided to razor my long, baby-fine hair and turned it into shreds. It has every hallmark of a great cut- it hangs beautifully with no effort and now I can once again get rid of my blowdrying routine. Rachel was extremely well versed in what she did, and I did, in fact, feel pampered as much as I want to be. She explained what she was doing and went in and cut more as we went along and I gave her feedback. This isn't a "five stars for what you would expect for a very inexpensive haircut." It's just five stars for any haircut. read more

I only gave 3 stars because Matthew was an awesome person and great customer service! I was a walk in and no one was there so was taken promptly. I gave him a great tip for him being so good at asking what I wanted; however, he cut my hair waaaaay too short! I can tell he knew he messed up and tried to cover it up, but by the end of my haircut, my head looked like a tennis ball with how he styled it. Completely way off from what I wanted which was shoulder length hair with texture at the bottoms and swept bangs. He's an awesome guy and probably cuts men's hair better since he said he has a lot of experience cutting men's hair. I should've listened to my intuition and stuck with my salon with the high prices but great results. The good thing about hair is that it grows... But never again going to a great clips! read more

The absolute worst customer service I have ever received! I brought my son in to the new salon to get a hair cut and the women were so incredibly rude! The lady that cut my sons hair gave me the hardest time because I wanted a scissor cut for my sons curly, thick hair and insisted on using clippers. She told me this haircut is going to take 5 min and doing a 20 min hair cut on him is silly. She cut his hair and it was super short after I told her to please give him a little trim, I wanted to keep his curls on his head. It was uneven all over. She never even talked to my son! The one women working in the salon was so busy smoking out front of the salon with the door open that smoke filled the salon. Disgusting. Have respect for others! Horrible, horrible, horrible. Save the $10 and go somewhere else! read more
