So much about our dinner was amazing. We got there for our 5:45pm reservation. The place was pretty empty and frankly quite nice from a noise level perspective. As the restaurant filled for the evening, the noise level got progressively louder. Our server was amazing. She was attentive and welcoming. She always made sure our water glasses were topped off and our table was always wiped clean. I had the Pappardelle with Lamb. In a word, amazing. What a delicious combination of flavors, textures and richness. Perfection. A friend had the Rigatoni allá Vodka. Another amazing dish. Perfect blend of flavors. My wife had the Bucatini Carbonara. An extremely rich dish. A bIt too rich for my taste. Most of it came home with us. My Nephew had the 3-Cheese Pizza with Pepperoni. I'm not a Pizza connoisseur, but felt it can best be described as "floppy". The crust was good but the Pizza bottom had no structure or snap to it. A nice place for Italian in Truckee. First time. Great Gold was a perfect place to stop for dinner for the six of us, as we were on our way to Palisades for an event the next day. Our friends had been there before as they used to live in Truckee and it's one of their favorite places to go. Luckily we were there early right before they opened at 5 (we had no reservations), but we got a table! The menu was awesome with so many choices. My hubby and I ordered the pesto pasta which was divine! Fresh, beautiful and delicious. We also ordered the three cheese pizza which I also added anchovies to half, since it was offered as an add-on, on the menu! Also delicious, and only wish they had brought it to the table hot as it had already cooled down by the time it was brought to our table. Our friends ordered many other things, including the Maitake pizza, Panzanella salad and the pappardelle with lamb ragu, which was amazing. The pappardelle dish was the table favorite! I'm getting that for myself next time! For dessert we ordered an affogato and a scoop of the spumoni...again everything was amazing and delicious. Best affogato anywhere! Wow! Service from Jordan was bright and cheery. She was very helpful and pleasant. The prices are great for the pizzas as they were bigger than expected. The prices for the entrées are a bit pricier for the portion size, but worth it for special occasions and great quality food. Wonderful place with a great vibe! Gray gold is pretty fancy, but I still saw some kids. Definitely my favorite place for pizza hands-down in all of Truckee if not my favorite place to eat overall. They nailed the pizza crust (soft and chewy, sprinkled with fresh Parmesan... That was just a cherry on top) and the service is just excellent. All their pastas were good but my favorite was the rigatoni. The salad and broccolini also spectacular. I personally was not a big fan of the meatball (too much breading) and the Cacio E Pepe sauce was pretty heavy. But definitely still loved by everybody at the table. In fact we ordered a second plate of cacio e Pepe for the kids. The least favorite part was the Cabernet Sauvignon, especially for the price ($17), but overall can't wait to return! Be sure to make a reservation and ask for the kids menu - there are a few lower priced options ($18) for basic pastas. read more

I want to love Great Gold, but our experience was definitely average. It's another one of those places that creates a high price point for average food, beverage, and ambiance. The space is tucked away, off the beaten path, in an industrial part of Truckee. The floor plan is open, consisting of one moderate size room & an open kitchen. It's nicely lit, and fairly modern/minimalist in decor. We sat at the bar for dinner. Our bartender/server was very kind, but seemed a bit nervous. She suggested the Campanelle pasta which is supposedly homemade ($28). It was described as a Pesto and Cacio e Pepe pasta. Lawd knows I LOVE my Cacio e Pepe. But alas, it wasn't really Cacio e Pepe, but a pesto that had parmesan & pepper as well. It did not seem homemade either. My husband scarfed down his Tonarrelli Carbonara ($32) which looked more like an actual Cacio e Pepe to me. *Sigh*. The Focaccia bread was delicious & well seasoned. And our Fingerling Potatoes were pretty good as well. They had some sort of glaze on them that made them a tad sweet almost like an orange chicken sauce. The Tiramisu was a miss. It was very custardy with no texture. I was also surprised not to see ANY California wines on the menu. I understand they are aiming for authentic Italian, but it just didn't really land for me. Wine by the glass starts at $15, and a bottle starts at $60. So you do not get a discount for ordering a bottle. Might as well order by the glass in case you want to switch up your varietal. Our bill came out to $215 (with tip) for an "okay" dinner for two. They add a (disclosed) 6% healthcare fee to the bill. Like I said, I want to love Great Gold, but I don't know the next time I'll be back. Maybe the pizza is the right choice?! read more

This review is way overdue. We came here for the Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve, and were so delighted by the entire experience. The food was excellent, the dining room was lively, and the service was welcoming and attentive. This is one of the nicer spots for dining out in Truckee, so it's great for a celebration, date night or just a nice dinner out. We haven't had a chance to return on a regular night, but we definitely plan to. read more

Wow. The only thing I regret here is being late on the news that this place exists. Every bite of this dinner, dessert and every sip of wine was exceptional. The entire staff was so friendly, warm and engaging, they made us feel right at home. We had a short wait until our table was ready and sat at the bar with wine and ordered the tomato bread which was out of this world. We shared a few apps, pasta and pizza, each were perfection. The chef brought a bite or two to the table which was an added special touch. Every moment was delicious, filled with hospitality, local knowledge and care for our evening and experience. We felt like we were with friends. The wine list that went beyond the expected CA bottles was a welcomed surprise. We are telling everyone about this place and if you're on the fence, just go! Arguably the best Italian in Tahoe. Authentic, classic dishes, great flavors, locally sourced if possible. Menu offers a variety of options, but not so extensive you get lost. Staff was very friendly, knew their stuff with great recommendations (even in little stuff like complimentary Calabrian chile oil to match the Bianca Pizza). Homemade pasta, wood fired pizza. Food was delicious, I would call this more of an Italian restaurant. It was way fancier than I thought it would be. I felt a bit underdressed as I just thought it was some low key pizza place but it's really nice inside and very pricey. Interesting that it's located in a commercial area outside of downtown but they have outdoor seating and ample tables inside. Full bar with good drinks. They even had gluten free pasta which was a plus for me. I wish they had a gluten free pizza dough. I ordered an extra meatball on my pasta and for $7 more it was a lot smaller than I thought it would be although very tasty. Service was slow. Our waitress just kinda stopped coming to our table and then we were asking random staff for assistance so that was weird but at least we still got help as they did seem to have a lot of staff. read more

I have held my tounge on this review for a week now but this was truly a horrible meal. To be clear the staff was great. But the food I think I would have to be paid to eat if I ever went back. Everything was supper salty and did not have much flavor and the pizza had the texture of a chewy pudding. But the real problem with this meal is not the taste or textures of the food it is what happens to your stomach after the meal. To say it nicely, the nile river with a storm surge dosent have as much flow and pressure as what happend after this meal. It was painful to say the least. And this didn't happen to just one person in the party it happened to multiple of us. And unless I am looking to feal this horrible sensation again I shall never return to this middling establishment ever again. read more

We were looking for a restaurant to celebrate my mother in law's birthday while visiting Tahoe and Great Gold was the PERFECT choice! It was really busy for a Tuesday night and a bit loud, but the food and service were wonderful. We all got a different pasta (spaghetti, ravioli, rigatoni, and eggplant parm) and everyone loved their dish. WOW! I'd give 6 stars if possible! Easy reservation process, arrived early to have a drink in the bar but our table was ready so were seated right away. Jacob, our server, was awesome. He's knowledgeable, personable, and attentive just the right amount. Great wine list with domestic and Italian selections by the glass. We ordered the sesame Ceasar salad; one of the best we've ever had with just the right amount of dressing, perfect mixture of Kale and other items. Then came the spaghetti with a couple of meatballs, and the hand-cut tagliatelle. Both were incredible, and the pastas were cooked to al dente perfection. This is my go-to in Truckee now. Favorite restaurant in Truckee this year. Thursday was our fourth visit since the start of the year and we're unlikely to slow down (so long as the Branzino stays on the menu, which is a MUST order for at least one person at your table). For the antipasti, the fritto misto is fabulous and filling. That basil aioli and the oysters pair wonderfully. Enjoyed the pear and endive salad as well (for something a little lighter). Pork belly meat balls were very good and easy to share but I would rank them just below the fritto misto. Have enjoyed every one of the pizzas we have tried (only one we haven't tried yet is the three cheese). Very filling and definitely something to split if you're also having an appetizer. Definitely on par with Old Town if not better. Favorite might be the Italian sausage or prosciutto arugula, but if you like spicy, the hot salami is excellent. Grilled broccoli and Brussels sprouts are both very good but we usually pass on them in favor of another app or dessert. Love the display of the albums being played for that night as well. Great variety. Far from the usual elevator music you'll find at some places. And while the service is always great here, a big thank you to Jessie for not just excellent wine recommendations but perfectly paced courses on this last visit. Equally a fun spot for a date, a few friends, or a larger family dinner. Reservations recommended. read more

We came to Great Gold in Truckee for my wife's birthday dinner with our two young kids (ages 3 and 4). From the start, the experience fell apart due to basic front-of-house incompetence. When we arrived, the host told us the restaurant was full but offered to put us on a waitlist. We clearly asked for a table for two adults and two children, which the host acknowledged. We were quoted a 1 hour and 45 minute wait, which we accepted. We waited the entire time in our car, entertaining our kids, until we received a text saying our table was ready. When we returned inside, the host informed us that he had only put us down for two people, not four, and that they "didn't have space" for our party. There was no attempt to correct the mistake, no solution offered, and no ownership taken--despite the error being entirely theirs. What made it worse was the dismissive, pretentious attitude of the host throughout the interaction. Mistakes happen, but how a restaurant responds to them matters. In this case, there was zero effort to fix the situation or accommodate a family who had already waited nearly two hours for a special occasion. For a restaurant that presents itself as higher-end, this level of disorganization and lack of accountability is unacceptable. We left disappointed, frustrated, and with a ruined birthday plan. I would not recommend this place for families or for anyone celebrating something important. read more

Myself and some friends came here for a nice dinner after skiing and prior to destroying the blackjack tables in Reno. We were greeted by friendly host staff, and a cozy, intimate ambiance. Once seated, the server was very helpful in explaining the menu and making us feel welcome. I had the butternut squash ravioli and short rib with polenta. The butternut squash ravioli was perfectly balanced - the drizzled balsamic and hazelnuts added great acidity and texture, respectively. The ravioli was the highlight of the meal. The short rib was well flavored, with the sauce and "salsa verde" adding some pop to the dish. The short rib was not as tender as I would expect, but that is my only complaint. We finished the meal with good coffee as well. The meal and caffeine set us up well for a night of gambling and debauchery. Highly recommend! read more
