Sorry to ruin the love fest.... *It was clear that becuase they are so friendly every customer here feels like a regular and therefore entitled to whine and complain and cut you in line....and have awkward loud conversations about the state of the American Health Care system. Being consummate businesspeople, they wouldn't have dreamed of telling those people to shut it and stop ruining everyone else's spa experience. *Making an appointment does absolutely NO good, you will still have to wait a half hour. This happened to me twice. I had more luck just waltzing in. *The first two times I thought the flirtatious gentleman doing my nails was charming. The third time it got weird...the fourth time I was completely freaked out about the implication that my (fake) boyfriend has a large penis, continuously asking for kisses, and the fact that he continuously reached over to touch my face (getting a manicure here...) or tickle my armpit. Seriously? My armpit? And, of course "accidently" touch my breasts in the process. Also...I mentioned my eyes were itchy from allergies and he reached up and started squeezing my arm(pressure points?) near my elbow (another excuse to tickle me). He was squeezing really hard but I told him it didnt hurt. So he squeezed until he did and the next day I had a quarter-sized bruise. This experience made me realize....when you're in the middle of a manicure you're a captive audience... you don't want to create an awkward experience by telling the guy off...but you also don't want to run away half shellac-ed. If you're looking for a fungal infection and/or to be hit on by skeezy nail guys, this is definitely the place for you! The toe fungus must have gotten to the brains of the people who give this place five stars. Or, they have zero respect for their personal health and safety when it comes to making their nails look purty. I however, have heard and seen too many horror stories from friends and the news about unsanitary nail salons to give this place anything higher than two stars. The chairs were dirty, the utensils seemed like they were reusing them repeatedly without sanitizing them (other yelpers have reported this as well), and all the products seemed like they had been open since 1984. I found myself looking around in fear, contemplating running out the door to avoid catching a flesh-eating bacteria. To top it all off, one of the male nail "technicians" proceeded to make disgusting and flirtatious comments to my friend whilst slowly massaging her legs with oil or whatever. The little, gutsy, perv then turned his attention towards me and I had to shut his ass down real quick. The reason for the two stars even? Sadly enough, I received the BEST freaking shellac mani/pedi ever from this place. However, putting my health at risk for an excellent mani/pedi is like rolling the dice with a dirty doctor who might possibly give me the best breast augmentation ever...OR kill me. Finally, there's nothing uppity or socialite-like about not wanting to be permanently disfigured because of an unsanitary salon. I used to love this place, but the lack of sanitation of implements is a huge problem! They give excellent service and great mani/pedis, but they do not clean. When they cut the person next to you, and do not clean the implement, then use the same implement on the next person, diseases will spread. Some are simple like a foot fungus or toenail fungus (ever tried to get rid of that?), and some are more serious, like hepatitis C, or HIV. Either way, you are taking your chances that all the people before you are disease free, because the instruments are not being cleaned. Not even with soap and water, and certainly not with the required disinfectant. I wish they would clean properly...it's not a difficult thing to do. Another great french shellac from Matt - he always does a perfect job, paying attention to detail and making sure it's exactly what I want without making me feel bad for being picky. I do agree with some of the other reviewers that the recent admin-type changes have tested my loyalty to this place. The nail technicians are still awesome, but the front desk staff and payment policies have changed. In a matter of months, they went from letting you pay and tip privately with credit card, to requiring you to tell the receptionist how much you want to tip and having her add it to your bill, to pressuring you to pay with cash, to requiring that you tip with cash. (This is 2017 - who the heck carries cash!?) I think the new front desk staff may be related to the new payment policies, because it seems to depend on who processes your payment as to how strict the cash rule is. Regardless, it's annoying. Having said all that, Matt's manicures are far better than any other place in town, and a steal at $30 (for french shellac). Since I'm coming for the manicure--not the "front desk experience"--I can deal with the tangential annoyances! During my last visit at "Great Nails" I was overcharged $10. I paid $25 on my credit card AND WAS GIVEN A RECEIPT FOR $25. And I gave Judy $5 cash as a tip. Two days later I discovered on my bank statement that I was charged $35 ($10) extra. So I called "Great Nails" and they told me that they will look into it and call me back. 5 days later and I still haven't heard from them. So I called them and had to argue for 10 min...as they tried to dismiss my complain by telling me that they'll call me in few days (ridiculous!!) and finally I got on the phone somebody named Tony who stated he is a manager. He started arguing with me that they didn't overcharge me and that I should drive to their salon and he is going to show me the receipt for $25. I have that receipt. Originally they charged me $25 and day later added additional $10. He said that I am not right and he didn't overcharge me and that I should come and show him my bank statement!?! Please be aware!!! and don't go through the same nightmare... That's probably why they allow to drink alcohol while giving manis/pedis so they can overcharge people. One star is way too much to rate this place. When I said to Tony that I will describe the situation on Yelp so other people can be aware of such situations happening at "Great Nails & Spa" he answered "You can do whatever you want sweetie" and hung up on me... ouch!! really? 2 weeks after I was overcharged I was refunded the amount of the overcharge. read more

Every worker turned and looked at me almost with disgust when I told them I didn't have an appointment. The location is super small and cramped and doesn't feel very inviting. the cuticle around my big toe was cut and bled for a while. the massage was too rough with no way for me to explain where i had been injured before. i was never asked if the massage felt good or if it was too strong, i suggested we forgo the pedicure after my toe wouldn't stop bleeding - completely ignored. after i settled into the massage chair (which i had no idea how use and really wanted to turn down the intensity level) my pedicure and manicure started at the same time. it was a bit of sensory overload to have both at once. i was able to find a place of zen and try to enjoy being taken care of. then, my cuticle was cut (badly) and wouldn't stop bleeding. i had no input on the matter. he poured drops of stuff (i'm guessing to try to stop the bleeding) onto the area (i have no clue what it was) and it stung. i told him it hurt, but he did it a few more times and then put my foot back in the water like my foot was at fault. the leg massage felt great (except for my ankle injury), so i tried to settle into that, as my arms were also being massaged. i have tiny arms, the pressure was intense, but felt good on my overworked hands. then the guy massaging my arms hit me. over and over up and down each arm. i realize this is part of their process, but it was rough and i was recently in a car accident, so i'm pretty sore. this is something i could have told them or someone who could have translated, if they even cared about the customers enough for a 1 minute consult before going to work on you. to the guy's credit (different guy than the one who worked on my legs & feet), when i winced, he lightened up a bit. besides having my skin cut, more disappointment came after leaving, when i saw that my toenails were not cut evenly, a few are longer than the others and the filing is spotty. basically, i could have given myself this pedicure without the nasty cut. the manicure is good. i will say that my legs and feet are very soft from the exfoliation, but i didn't go there for just that, i wanted nicely trimmed toenails as well. i don't get the high reviews here on yelp. i've been slightly nicked before during a pedicure but there has never been blood spewing from my cuticle. this was brutal. i have a huge long scab forming that i'm treating with neosporin and hoping doesn't get infected. if they had offered me a discount of some sort for cutting my skin wide open, i might be more inclined to give them another try, as i realize we are all only human, but no discount, no real concern other than a "sorry" from the man who cut me. other people working there saw my toe and spoke to my pedicurist about it (but i couldn't understand what they were saying, which is fine). only one woman, working on a lady next to me, asked if it was "ok" and i told her it really hurt (which she understood). she did nothing and told no one. oh yeah, the other thing - the instruments they use did not seem like they were cleaned just for me. there was skin built up on them and i just had to close my eyes. it was gross. the sanitation is questionable, the pace - hectic, the massages longer and more detailed than the manicures/pedicures. read more

Yelpers weren't kidding about the leg massage. It. is. legit. I don't get pedicures often (enough), but I fully appreciate the time and attention that Great Nails puts into their services, especially with the massage portion! My spa pedi ran $30, which seems about right these days. The tech wasn't overly friendly or chatty, which was just fine by me as I was in from out of town and chatted with girlfriend in the chair next to me. Allow me to break down the basics: Ambiance: Pretty loud and super busy on a Saturday morning. No surprise there, but don't expect a serene salon environment. The space wasn't eat off the floor clean, but totally acceptable. Polish selection: A large selection of polishes but totally unorganized. They could do with my OCD-like tendencies of color sorting. Massage chairs: I find massage chairs more of a hinderance than a help, but that's personal preference. These also have an odd bottom massage section in which the seat almost inflates. No thanks. Quality of service: Pretty great overall. I have some teeny tiny Chiclet toenails, and my manicurist nailed it. See what I did there? Extras: The leg massage was, as previously noted, awesome. Don't let that crappy exterior and the cheap sign fool you. It's a small place but it's nicely decorated. I've been to other nail salons where there's white tile floors and loud TVs. Here the decor is painted with light brown/brown walls, hardwood floors and singer/songwriter music that is not blasting. There were 6 people working. All of them were very friendly. I had a pedicure and manicure and what stood out from the average pedicure I usually get was they put this scrub on my legs. Then they put a hot towel. It's uncomfortable for the first couple of minutes but your legs feel so much better and refreshed afterwards. I loved it! Definitely going back there. read more

After reading all the rave reviews here on Yelp, I was really excited to get a pedicure here, especially since this place is right across the street from my apartment complex. How cool would that be to find a nice place to get a pedicure so close to my home? I've only had three or four pedicures in my life because normally I just do everything myself. I'm definitely not a pedicure snob, but the pedicure I just received was not very good. I don't usually complain about things because I'm pretty easy going, but when I got home, I found so many things that were wrong that I was actually a little upset. Let's start with the pros - 1) The leg massage was nice. I'm a runner, so I like that the technician took time with massaging my feet and legs. 2) My technician was sweet. I didn't really talk to her because I can be pretty quiet, but she smiled at me frequently. 3) My feet are soft, so that's good. Now for the cons - There were things that she would do to one leg, but not both. For example, she used the exfoliating scrub on my right leg, but not my left. I didn't realize until after she put the hot towel on my legs, and by then, it was too late. I didn't think much of it, though, and it wasn't a big deal to me, but it was a sign of things to come. She put a second coat of polish on my right toes, but not my left. This was especially annoying to me because half of my left big toenail is black - with two coats of polish, you can't see that, but with one coat, half of my toenail is clearly visible. (I just put on another coat when I got home, but I wish I didn't have to do that.) When I got out of the chair, there were a few things I was unhappy with, but it wasn't until I got back home that I really started to notice things. First of all, after the massage, the technician forgot to wipe my knees off. No big deal, I thought, I'll just wipe them off at home. That didn't bother me until I wiped my knees and found that the paper towel was covered with dirt. What? I wiped again and, sure enough, another brown hand print from where I had wiped. Were the technician's hands dirty when she rubbed my legs? Were the products dirty? Why is there so much dirt - I wasn't even outside and I showered before I arrived. I then rubbed my entire calf only to find more dirt on the paper towel. At that point, I just washed my legs. Then I noticed the bottoms of my feet still had quite a bit of dead skin, like she had missed whole areas. I began scrubbing with my own tools and it all came off pretty easily, so I knew it wasn't just because it had been difficult to get off. It was as if the technician hadn't even tried or just forgot. I also noticed that clean up on my toenails had been nonexistent and I did it all myself. After having to do all these fixes myself, I was just disappointed. I felt like I wasted the money - I could have done a better job at home myself. I really wanted to like this place. I'm still going to give them a chance, because maybe my technician was just having an off day or she was tired. The woman before me had her and the technician did a great job with her nails. Maybe it just depends on who you get and how they're feeling that day? Also, the technician did not sterilize her tools. She went straight from working on the last lady to me - good thing the last lady looked clean. This doesn't normally bother me, but it might bother others. (And you never know what kind of stuff people might have on their hands or feet. The last thing I want is a foot fungus.) Like I said, I'll still give them a chance because I see the potential and other people were raving about the service they just received, so clearly they are doing something right. I have never had as great an experience getting mani/pedis as I do at Great Nails! I had a $300 mani/pedi in Hawaii that didnt come close. Also, I moved to super N Austin and still make the trek down to their location. I will try to briefly list the best reasons why Great Nails is OUTSTANDING. 1) The prices are low, extremely reasonable. 2) Their leg/feet massages are the best! 3) When getting a mani, they massage your arms, all the way to your shoulders! 4) The pedis last me well over two weeks, closer to a month. 5) They always remember my name, are super friendly and I have inside jokes with a lot of the technicians. 6) If I smudge something on my way home (clumsy), they are happy to fix it, free of charge. 7) I am super happy with their magazine selection. 8) Bring your own booze or buy it at the connected shop, they are happy to refill your wine glass as you are running low, and they provide clean glassware. Even though it is a FANTASTIC hole in the wall, it is not a well kept secret. Everyone goes! The secrets are when to go and when it will be too busy. It is true that you can have an appt and wait thirty mins after but if you have the time, it is well worth it. I just make my appts for later and show up early. Oh my god. Oh my god! I nearly floated out the door when I left this place! I'm a hairstylist, and when I get out of work, I'm literally limping most of the time. When I left Great Nails after being worked on by Matt, I felt like I could have run a 5K barefoot, no problem. I came in at a peak time and didn't have to wait long. I brought my friend along and we sipped on some Strongbows (miraculously, this place is byob!) until I was led to the pedicure chair. Startlingly, Matt introduced himself to me, asked me my name and also how I was doing, even before he walked me over! Every single other time I've had my nails done it's been an awkward, anonymous transaction wherein the nail tech waves me over, sits me down and begins the pedicure. Being in the service industry means making the client comfortable, and that's exactly how I felt. The pedicure itself was meticulous, gentle, thorough, and in the end, the paint job was excellent. But for real working women, the proof is in the massage. Reflexology, anyone? I mean, this was intense. The thing about the techniques they're using is that it will hurt now (I mean, you'll probably be scared that whoever is working on you is going to break your bones) but it will feel AMAZING later. You just have to trust that the people that work here do this all day, every day and know EXACTLY what they're doing. Even if you're a wimp, like the lady who was next to me bitching the whole time, just go with it. Wince, shout expletives, whatever, but afterward your bad knees and cramped toes will be but a memory. The manicure was also an intense experience, but after years of fawning over other people's tresses, I say bring it on to anything that will help to mend my poor hands and arms. The thing to notice about this place as well, just as an establishment, is their incredible attention to sanitation. Having taken state board exams myself, I understand how quickly infections and bloodborne ilnesses can spread, and this place is following TDLR codes to the T. Clean. Really, really clean. But the part that I appreciated the most out of everything was that after Matt applied my chosen color for my manicure, I decided I really didn't like it and was probably going to take it off when I got home. So I did something I've never done before: I asked to change my polish color. I apologized profusely and said that I would gladly pay for a polish change, but I was never charged for one. And the total price of the manicure and pedicure complete with scrubs, masques, hot towel wraps, intense massage, a bangin' paint job on toes and two go-'rounds with my hands? $37. Are you fucking kidding me? I felt like I was robbing these people at gunpoint! I tipped Matt a twenty. Anything less would have been an insult to the perfection he executed. I went to Great Nails because of the great reviews and its proximity to my home. The manicure I got was terrible. The male manicurist kept pinching my fingers and was really rough when he was cutting my cuticles. I told him to stop pulling so hard, that it hurt and he kind of laughed, like any sadist would, and continued to massacre my poor cuticles. And he didn't even get them all even or all off the nail bed. If you are going to injury someone, you should at least give make sure each of the massacred cuticles is at the same level on the nail bed. Never, ever again. I can mess up a manicure myself at home, for free. read more

Go on a week day/night. Or not at all? I made reservations for Sunday afternoon, but we still did not get seen for about 15mins after we walked in. They were VERY busy. You know what? No big. But, when we're finally seated for pedis/manis I expect the great treatment I've heard so much about. Taking their time, massages. No such luck for 2 out of 3 in our group. I was very disappointed with the guy who did mine. (He had an "H" necklace.) Sloppy with cutting, he nicked me, and was yanking my feet around the basin, and my arms over to his side of manicure table. I noticed time and again, there was not a lot of time taken with cleaning the pedicure basins between costumers. I know places that run a cycle between each customer. Also, I was told the gel/shellac was an extra $10 but guess that's not really true. While I was sitting there, they said it was $25 extra. Seriously?! $50?! They charge $45 at the "fancy" places. Very disappointed with the experience. AND! I think that one cuticle he nicked is a little infected. It certainly hurts a lot. :- read more

Everything you read is true. Well, at least the good stuff (but how could anyone say anything bad about this place, really??) I discovered Great Nails probably about two years ago and I was selfishly keeping it to myself (and a few select friends) because it was TOO AWESOME to share with the whole wide world. But, in all reality, I don't go nearly as much as I'd like to..and they deserve all the business they can get!! I had a similar experience to someone else who wrote a review-- they agreed to take my friend and I in at closing time (7:30)-- and we were there until 10:00pm, as they gave our feet the most fantastic rubdown imaginable!! And for $25?? Unreal. The downside (if you could call it that) is: if you go during a busy time, prepare to wait, because they don't rush through anyone's pedi. But the upside of that is, they certainly won't rush through yours either, even if the line's out the door or they are technically closed! Matt and Lee are my favorites-- they are so amazing!! I feel like they must have studied acupuncture, but they claim they haven't. Sometimes there are big gaps between when I go but, regardless, they always greet me with a hug and remember my name. I love them!!! I hope they keep the prices low so I can keep tipping them BIG because they deserve it. And it's BYOB, yes. Which makes things get a little loud in there on Fridays after office hours... it's the most unexpected happy hour deal in town! :) read more

I'm actually surprised at how many good reviews this place has. My experience was decidedly unpleasant - I dunno if I just have high standards for nail salons or what. Showed up here with a friend on a Thurs after work. We didn't have appointments and were pleasantly surprised that they were able to seat us right away. The guy who did my nails was completely inattentive. He spent most of the time either looking at the door, interacting with people who just walked in or talking to the nail techs on either side of him. He didn't speak English very well which was frustrating when trying to give instructions - he asked me if I wanted to cut my nails or just file - I said just file, and he proceeds to cut them all. As often happens in places like this, he cut way too short and even cut my cuticle really badly so I bled for several minutes. And after he cut me, while apologizing profusely, he proceeds to put nail polish remover on my open cut which stung like hell! Needless to say I was pissed. The massage portions of the mani/pedi were rough and painful - I asked him to be more gentle, which he didn't understand. Not a relaxing experience at all. And their customer service overall sucks - I overheard them being very rude to people the entire time. One girl showed up for her appt and after waiting 10 min she was told the person she had an appt with wasn't even working that day - and there was zero attempt to apologize for the inconvenience. I know if that had been me I would have left immediately. When everything was said and done I was charged $37 for a very sloppy mani/pedi. Granted it's not as expensive as some places but that's hardly a deal for a sub-par nail job. I would rather spend the extra money and leave feeling relaxed and knowing I have a manicure that's not going to chip within an hour (which of course mine did). I'm preggers and just got a massage, pedicure with Mat today. It was the best pedicure I've ever had. The pressure was great. ( I can see how other people who CAN'T RELAX (and complain on yelp) would think it's too much. Stop whining, you spoiled, prissy, soul-sucking, zombie-bitches. These people work hard and you criticize them. I realize this is an open window for criticism, and fine, do so. But don't you go back! Because you're ruining the energy that I enjoy while getting my lovely, affordable pedi (go to your frou frou place if you want pretentious bs...while you're at it, move to Dallas!)) They're good here because they work hard...something most Americans have lost sight of. They're amazing at what they do and they're wonderful, spirit-filled people. They're busy; business is good. No yelp review can say more. I see them trying to reserve spots, thru all the existing business. The personalization here is great. ( If you're feeling anti-social, why would you want to have someone touch you or be that snug with people?...stay home! (or move to Dallas)) The scent inside (I was worried about because i'm pregnant) wasn't chemically. They had a really nice cinnamon scented oil lamp in the room. They were careful to my needs. Mat checked to see if pressure was good, water temperature and reminded me to relax. He did an incredible job with the leg massage and the pedicure. Took a break from this place to go somewhere closer to home but I'm so glad I'm back, my gel manicure is perfection...even after two weeks of cooking, typing, dog washing, dish loading etc etc. their prices are great, nice little shop next door to pull out cash (for tip!) and everything is clean and kept up. I moved to Austin from San Francisco and I found this place by doing some research on Yelp. The place had great reviews so I had high expectations but if this is the best Austin's got then I'm in trouble. The actual facility is old and dated and in a small strip mall. It's also very tiny. When I was inside, I felt like I was trampling over people....just very uncomfortable. Toooo many women in one small space. There were at least 6 women just standing in one corner waiting for their appointments. The staff appears overwhelmed and rushed as my spa pedicure was just blah. I prefer to get a good scrub down of my feet and removing all the dead skin - that never happened. My heels were not scrubbed down. I did get a solid foot massage but it was a little too painful for my taste. They clean down your feets with two wet towels that look overused and kinda gross. I felt like I need to wash my feet once I got home. They were soo busy and rushed that I was only applied one coat of polish. Overall, I was disappointed. In California I go to multiple nail salons that provide nice leather chairs, water, tea, spa tubs that work (mine was broken) with jets, clean hot white towels, hot wax, scrub downs with high end products, two coats of nail polish. I haven't found a nail salon in Austin that matches up yet. Great nails and Spa doesn't come close. read more

Well, I went after hearing great reviews from friends of mine. I've gone a couple times, but have to say I just can't bring myself to go one more time. I've been happy with the service: friendly, my nails always look nice. But here's what I can't get over.... THE LACK OF CLEANLINESS!!!! Being a nurse and working in the healthcare profession, I understand the importance of cleanliness, especially when working with the public!! After my pedi, I took a spot at the manicure station near to where I'd just sat in the pedi chair. I watched as she filled the tub with water, to invite another customer over. She never cleaned the tub after my pedi, AND I'm sure it wasn't cleaned before I sat in that same chair... EEEWWWW! After seeing this, I was more observant of the practices of my manicurist. He retrieved a box of instruments (nail file, clippers, etc.), no from a sealed container to indicate sterilization, but a box lined with a paper towel. He opened the tin box and got to work. Naturally, I sat glancing around and noticed a nice layer of nail dust lying in the same box with which my instruments had just come from. I've noticed little things with each visit, which tells me this isn't just a one time thing. It's how they practice.... Which is poor sanitation. No thanks... I'll pass read more

This place ranks 4.5 stars for me, the only 1/2 star being left out because it seemed awkward getting a mani at the same time as a pedi (due to the reaching around of arms and such), and the guy who put me in the chair barked at my inexperience at hefting myself up there (PUT YOUR FEET IN WATER!! all that was missing was "dumb beeyotch"). Annnywaaay, I went in the day before my wedding, on a Thursday. Suffice it to say that I'm no mani-pedi expert; I normally just do 'em myownself, so I was thrilled at the level of service once I, um, got in the chair. My pedicurist, Lee, was freakin' awesome! He exfoliated, massaged, hot-toweled my legs and feet, then painted my toesies to perfection (I woulda shaved my legs had I read Dawn's review closer. My bad!). He was very amiable, and we had some good laughs. They have massage chairs that immediately relaxed this bride-to-be, and the place is very clean. And the MUSIC! Awesome. Austin. Perfect. Relaxing. They even gave me some funky lil' post-pedi flip flops to wear home, seeing as how I didn't wear my own to the salon (hell, it was cold outside). I didn't get the manicurist's name, but she did a wonderful job cleaning up my cuticles (which were hideous) and making my nails look just lovely. I will definitely go back, and who knows? I concur with all the numerous rave reviews: for $25 you get a deluxe spa pedicure, including an extensive leg and foot massage. Lee did an expert job. In total, my pedicure lasted an hour and fifteen minutes...so if you're short on time you should ask for less massage, but better just to allocate the time in advance! Added bonuses: - Evening hours until 7:30 pm. I've been to a lot of Vietnamese-owned/run nail salons, and in general they're all pretty much the same: same spa pedi massage chairs, same standard routine for manis/pedis, same gossipy chatter all around. At face value, this place is no exception, but there's a reason that there's always a wait and their phone is ringing off the hook--they're great at what they do. At other salons, I feel like the technicians are always trying to finish my manicure/pedicure as quickly as possible. At Great Nails, they could very well do this (because there's an endless line of people eagerly awaiting the same treatment), but they don't. They take the time to do a great job and make you feel pampered. I arrived at 10 am sharp on Sunday morning, hoping to avoid lines. It's a good thing, too because I was seated immediately and within half an hour they were already turning people away unless they wanted to make an appointment for later in the day. In the hour and a half that I was there, 10 to 11:30 am, they booked up through at least 3 pm. I got a pedicure ($25!) and a manicure ($12!). A full hour and (only) $37 later, I was relaxed, painted, and waiting for my nails to dry at the front. During the hour-long treatment, my legs were thoroughly scrubbed with multiple concoctions, my arms and legs were (borderline painfully) massaged with lotions for a good 20 minutes and then wrapped in hot towels, and my nails and toenails were expertly cleaned, trimmed, and painted. There was a surreal period of about 5 minutes when one guy was violently rubbing one of my legs, another guy was literally pounding on my arm, and the massage chair was forcing my body to gyrate unnaturally. I couldn't help but laugh to myself. I'm sure I looked ridiculous! Whatever. All in the name of beauty and relaxation! No but seriously, if you're a total wimp (not that I'm judging you) and can't take the intense massage that these guys offer, I'm sure they'll tone it down. But I recommend taking as much of it as you can. Afterward, you'll feel amazing, I promise! My only complaint about the place is that once your mani/pedi/whatever is done, they quickly shuffle you to an alternate location to free up the pedi spa chair you were in. When my time was up, there wasn't a drying station open, so I had to park it at the front door and wait for one to free up. About 10 minutes later, I was able to move to a drying station. Then after sitting there for a while, I had to practically throw my credit card at someone to pay. They were all so busy! Somewhere in the multiple moves and the payment process, I smudged a couple of my nails. At other nail salons I've been to, they get you to pay prior to getting a mani, to avoid such things (and maybe they would do that here too, but I didn't ask). Luckily I was still basking in the afterglow of my massages, so I couldn't sweat it too much. If you have a choice, get Lee to give you a manicure. He was very nice to talk to, and he knew some crazy pressure points that hurt at the time but left my arms feeling very relaxed after. I'm sure he's great with pedicures, too. I recommend going to this place on a day when you don't need to rush and just going with the flow. Savor it all and think of it as the cheapest spa day you'll ever encounter (this side of the Pacific). And, because it's so cheap, I suggest tipping generously. These guys work for it! read more

This, too, used to be my favorite place for a pedicure...up until mid-August. Maybe it was the time of day (6:00 on a weeknight; always went pretty early in the mornings before), but my pedi was disappointing: lackluster massage and the polish chipped off a day or two after. My toes looked better BEFORE I came in. Decided to also try getting a set of pink & white nails as well that night. They CLEARLY did not seem to want to take the time to do that. My better judgment should have told me that in the past I didn't notice anyone getting fake nails in this place; just manicures. (In fairness, those manicures looked good and customers seemed pleased.) Horrible job; thick, ugly, and so unnatural looking I took them off the next week. RUDE nail tech. My advice? If you only want to do traditional manicures, then DON'T OFFER the service. I'm going to go ONE LAST TIME for a pedicure this week (in the morning), and if it's not fantastic, I'm finished driving out of my way for this place. read more

I hate, hate, hate negative energy, so it's taken me a lot to want to write this review...... ....But this was hands-down (no pun intended) the WORST nail salon experience I have ever had. When I arrived, I let the receptionist know that I would like a rebase/refill for my french gel polish and trimmed way down. When the gentleman that did my nails did them, he didn't bother to add any more white nor did he bother to trim my nails. They were uneven, jagged, and barely had any white tips left. I am usually not too picky about my nails, I don't mind if it's not perfect, but this was absolutely unacceptable. I told him and he didn't say anything back or fix it. I had also asked for a nail design on my ring fingers, but when I asked him, he didn't look happy or confident with my suggestions, so I told him if he didn't feel comfortable, just not to do any art. He did it anyway and it seriously looked like white blobs. I was in a hurry that day, so I told the receptionist to book me a pedicure appointment for later that afternoon. I never dreamed I'd have an even worse experience with my pedicure than I did my manicure. The guy "massaged" my legs so hard the skin actually bruised (yes, I have pictures). You can hear them "massaging" (roughly slapping) client's legs during pedicures from across the salon. Not only was that strange and uncomfortable, the polish was done terribly. He didn't trim the nails down like asked and didn't trim cuticles down, so the gel was completely uneven and it was obvious. Within days, it was chipped off and looked absolutely terrible. When I complained about my nails, a man named Tony filed them down for me some and told me he couldn't do anything about them until they grew out some and I could come back the next week for a free refill. Whaaaat? I know that you might not be able to use that little tool, but you can definitely soak them off, which is undoubtedly what should have been done. I appreciated the offer to have fixed it later, but as you can imagine, after that experience, I definitely won't be back! Would have really appreciated just having my money refunded to go somewhere else. I have never had to complain at a salon before after getting my nails done for years and years.......... I was here literally hours ago, and it was so so so good to me that I had to review almost immediately. I've been in Europe traveling around, climbing volcanoes, and ripping my feet apart on tours. It's been rough. So I desperately needed a pedicure to heal my monster feet. My pedicure was fantastic! It was unlike any other experience I have ever had. The only other pedi this good I've gotten was in Houston and a million dollars (charged to a company). This one was only $25 and included great customer service! All the guys who work here are incredibly friendly. They all joke around with the clients and basically speak English the entire time. So I'm not constantly wondering whether they are judging my size 15 feet for looking like they were soaked in mud and ash for months. The guy who did my nails was super nice and very thorough! Definitely try this place! Just know that it's tiny and there aren't that many chairs (maybe like 6 or 8). My feet are reborn. read more

He promised it was benign, and wouldnt spread to me, but it did. Also, every time I went, I would wait an hour with, or without a reservation. There are a few things to know about Great Nails, if you've never gone before: This place takes its time, and for good reason. But a wait is inevitable, even if you have an appointment, and a pedicure takes every bit of an hour. This is a great place to come on a slow evening when you don't have anything to do but drink some wine and do something nice for yourself. Second, time at Great Nails is a full-contact experience. You will not find some tepid, wan looking woman hunched over your nails, absent-mindedly brushing your arms with her fingers in a poor attempt to massage you. The foot and arm massages here hurt, as they should. If you ask Matt or Lee to being it, prepare for some amazingly masochistic pleasure. They hit pressure points, tenderize your muscles, and beat you senseless. If you're lucky, you'll be bruised the next day. If you run or workout, this is the place to go for recovery. Forget trigger point, your toes will never look as good afterwards as they do when you leave Great Nails. (Note: it is possible for them to go gentle; I've seen it. Not that you'd be into that, or anything.) Lastly: A mani/pedi/eyebrow wax cost $44. FORTY-FOUR DOLLARS. Stupid cheap. Tip them well, these guys deserve it. read more

Sigh, there's 55 reviews for Great Nails & Spa now so I guess the cat is out of the bag and there is no point trying to keep this gem a secret any more. I had only had one pedicure before I first went to GN&S and it was a very nerve-racking experience so when I came here I was blown away at how hospitable everyone was. This is not just a pedicure, this is a full-on relaxing, indulgent experience. I have bought groupons and such to other fancier places but I am always disappointed since I usually miss out on the great leg scrub and massage that I get here for less. That said, the pedicures do take a while so don't expect to be in and out. This place is very busy with just a few staff and chairs, but I guess I go at off times so have never had to wait more than 15 minutes. Pro tip: When it is time for your car to get inspected make an appointment on a Saturday morning for a pedicure, take your car to Top Gunn the next block over and tell them you'll be back in just over an hour. You'll never get pulled over for a late inspection again! read more

Got me my favorite coffee down the street at summermoon and drove by this place and decided to try it out. Doesn't look like your typical swanky nail place on the outside but quality and service definitely make you feel like it is and best of all, price is reasonable. They seem to have a large number of regulars so I thought that was a good sign also. Each nail salon is gonna have its good and bad reviews as each employee works differently but my overall experience was great. Definitely will be back! read more

I called to make a spontaneous visit for my maiden voyage but was told they were booked up and could get me in at 7:30 (when they CLOSED). I worried that I'd receive a hasty half-assed "fuck I just want to get out of here" closing time pedicure. Oh no. Oh no no no. Great Nails should rename themselves to be F*cking Fantastic Nails. Buy a bottle of wine. Go. Thank me later. **UPDATE** I never got around to publishing this when I wrote it, so here I am just about 4 weeks after my pedicure and my toes are STILL pristine (minus my toenails growing a mile a minute). There is not much in the world better than coming here with a bottle (or 3) of wine after a really shitty day and paying them $25 for a kick ass spa pedicure. I've had some great pedicures, but between the BYOB and the price, I'll never pay for a pedicure from anyone else. (But if you want to give me a gift certificate to somewhere fancy, I'll take it.) My new favorite discovery, though, is shellac nails. I'd been avoiding it because my nails cry mutiny when I do anything to them besides clear nail polish and I didn't want to pay a ton just to have something peel off in a few days. I'm now almost 3 weeks into my $15 shellac nails (seriously!!) and nothing has even started peeling or chipping. What?! Make an appointment, but don't expect them to have a spot for you when you do. I've never been here when they weren't absolutely packed, but I've never had to wait more than 20-30 minutes for them to find somewhere for me to get painted. read more

I pass by this place everyday while driving home from work. Like other reviews have said, from the outside you might get a little thrown off, but it's very comfortable inside. I decided to give this place a try after reading all of the reviews. Called on Friday to make an appointment for two pedicures at 11:00 on Saturday. Saturday I dragged my BFF with me and promised to pay for her pedi. That way if she didn't like it, she couldn't complain because it was free. Needless to say, I don't have to worry about her complaining. We showed up and they had 2 pedi stations ready to go. We picked out our polish and had a seat. Our pedis lasted about an hour and 15 minutes. LOTS of time was devoted to massage, which was really, really nice. The Great: - Again, lots of massage time. And not a crappy, slap and tickle 3 minute kind of massage, but a good massage that makes you feel very relaxed. - Even though lots of people were walk-in's, never once did we feel shorted or rushed so they could get to another client. THAT rates highly on my scale, as there's nothing that annoys me more than feeling rushed during a relaxing service. - $25 for a deluxe pedi! Sweet Baby Jesus, that's one good deal! Most places charge $35 and up for a deluxe pedi! The "Eh": - I like hooker red nail polish. Any time of the year, you'll see me wearing some shade of hooker red. Because of this, a base coat is very important, which I noticed they skipped. Just not something I'm used to being skipped. - There was some red nail polish on the skin of a few toes. Nothing that was seen from far away, but when I did my at home inspection, it was something I noticed. This location is a little far from where I live, so I don't know if I'll be here for every pedicure, but if I'm on the way home and traffic is horrible, I'll stop in and get my toes done. read more

I went there last week before my wedding b/c of all the good reviews on Yelp. I would say that I loved it. My deluxe pedi was only $28 and it took them about an hr. The leg & foot massage was awesome. It wasn't the best looking outside, but when you walked in it was SUPER cute. The staff was awesome and so so friendly. They offered me bottle water when I got there (which I accepted). Everyone was smiling and it was cool to see the guys even working. This place totally beats any other pedi place in Austin.
