Pretty good supermarket, a bit smaller and limited than the other GW supermarkets in SGV and they don't offer amenities meat counter with butchers. They still have the fresh fish section with someone to help out weigh and pack fresh fish. I do enjoy walking around and finding nice deals after eating at a nearby restaurant. Fruits and vegetables are usually displayed nicely, some of the aisles have a variety of different Asian food items, and the checkout stands have deals or fast pick up items to take while you're waiting. Not sure why the ratings are so low. I can generally find some strange sodas and drinks here, as well as chips and instant noodles that I can't find at the 168 Market or 99 Ranch. They take EBT here which is great too. They recently also just got a face lift, so things look much more modern and cleaner. Prices are decent and competitive with the other Asian markets in the area. Over all, a good stop, but just know that parking can get hectic with all the restaurants and the recently opened Haven City Market in the same plaza. read more

GREAT WALL SUPERMARKET is in a giant center with its own free giant parking lot next to, and is connected to, the Haven City Market food hall. It was busy but not overwhelmingly so on a Saturday morning. It has all your essential Asian food staples with a large selection of LIVE seafood, even crawfish! Great Wall (GW) Supermarket is making its way toward the east side of So Cal. This GW location is right next to Haven City Market in West Covina (HCM WC). It's not as big as other GWs that I've been to on the west side in the San Gabriel Valley area, but big enough to have the basic food and other essentials. However, I find that some of the brands of items that I normally buy aren't available here. Since it's connected to HCM WC, you can walk from there to here on the inside. Sometimes, they may have it blocked off so please check before crossing over. How cool is it to eat, drink, and shop all in one place. So cool! This store is bright and clean. They have the produce and meats sections. Shelves are stocked with adequate inventory. Prices are reasonable. Again, my only gripe is that they don't carry some of the brands that I normally buy. Stopped by on Saturday, 03/09/24 for the first time. This place used to be the Hong Kong Supermarket and there were small, family-owned restaurants inside. This place/entire lot was completely renovated, and renovation is still currently in the works. There's going to be a future Haven City Market here and I am assuming it will be similar to the one in Rancho Cucamonga. My mum and I stumbled across this supermarket, and I was intrigued since it just opened. There's still some construction going on, but the market slightly disappointed me? I don't know why, but I thought it would look more grand. Maybe it'll look better in the future though. We only got seafood since the crab looked fresh, and I wanted some baby squid . They also had quite a few Korean products. I believe they were giving gifts to customers either randomly or to those that spent a minimum amount. read more

Great Wall Supermarket - some froggies - Grocery Near Me - West Covina, California

This grocery is in a strip mall, so you won't have a problem finding parking if you go during off-peak hours and days. It's very organized inside. But a lot of items are labeled in non-English languages so it can get confusing unless you're literate in those languages. I used to frequent this store back when it was called Hong Kong Seafood Plaza and it used to be great. It sadly no longer has employees who are hospitable or kind. When I went there this week, I was looking for something and unable to find it, I approached a lady who brushed off my hand from her arm when I tapped her to get her attention (I thought she was hearing-impaired because she wasn't responding to me saying "excuse me ma'am") and before I could voice my question she said "only Vietnamese, no, you go!" gesturing for me to leave her alone. She seemed like she didn't even want to try to understand me. I held my phone out to show her a photo of what I needed but she couldn't even be bothered to look. I thought that was a one-off so I approached a young man stocking the refrigerator section and tried to ask him where I could find what I needed. He said "I don't work here, I don't know." I tried approaching a third person for help but when I said "excuse me, can you please help me?" loudly, she walked away from me even faster. I just gave up. I tried my best to be independent and just use Google lens to figure out what I needed to, but it wasn't enough. I understand that this is an international store, and I did what I could to not rely on employees, but if I'm trying to give them business, shouldn't they at least try to bridge the gap? A business doesn't exist without happy customers. And customers only feel happy if they are assisted in getting items that they need. I don't think the new management understands the gaps. I hate giving anything less than 5 stars but it feels like this store doesn't even want my patronage. The products are great but I wish they could train their employees to want to be helpful. read more

Came by to grab one thing real quick, got stopped by security with the doors locked. He said they stopped letting people in at 9pm (it was 8:58, closing time 9:30pm). So I asked don't you guys close at 9:30? I've been here at 9 before, and he's like no 9:15, and I pointed to the hours on the window that clearly states 9:30pm. He's like yeah but too many people (and I looked through the window and it's mostly empty), I've literally seen more people before, what a ridiculous thing for a security to say with the manager hiding in the back. As I'm finishing this review parked in front of the store, I saw another person argue with the security about the hours, and he was let in. Then I watched another couple being let in. Wow read more

3 stars for the variety of food and selection, as well as parking. There are several businesses in the same plaza but it didn't seem they were too busy so parking was very easy. 1 star for bad service from two employees we interacted with. The employees, 1 was a cashier and 1 was a food sample distributor, both had a very rude attitude when we inquired to ask questions about the products and the store. One of them blatantly ignored us and turned her back toward us until we kept asking for a follow up. As a customer, I felt disappointed in the type of service received and the rude attitude we had to dealt with. No, we didn't go complain to a manager; but afterwards we felt it's important to share this incident here. Not sure if their management or anyone will see this, but please don't bring bad attitude to work and be respectful to the people around you. If you want to just pop in and grab something and leave, this is probably the place but the ambiance did seem a bit empty, gloomy, and negative. It's not a busy type of market, and I am not sure if I'd want to come back. Such a disappointment. read more

I went to buy chestnuts tonight, and I noticed that the store had both large and small size chestnuts bag mixed together, priced at $1.98/lb, I picked a bag of small one and went to the checkout counter. However, the cashier told me the chestnuts I selected were $3.98/lb. I mentioned that the displayed price was $1.98/lb, and she responded that it wasn't correct. I suggested they should separate the chestnuts by size to avoid confusion. I still wanted to buy it at 3.98/lb, to my surprise, she said the price on the register was actually $5.98/lb. That's outrageous! It felt like they were trying to take advantage of customers. If you visit this market, be sure to double-check the prices they charge at checkout--it might not match what's advertised. read more

My mom's foot was bleeding and the manager didn't care. Been shopping here for 7 years - from HK until it turned into the GW Market. Always had a great shopping experience here. But today was different. While my mom was pushing the cart, a can fell out of the child seat's opening and fell onto her foot, making it bleed. We talked to the cashier, who was really nice, and asked if we should report it as an incident, just in case. We weren't looking to complain or get anything from it, just wanted to check, as some places have procedures for this. She kindly let us know that it is typically the manager who handles that. So, we waited for the manager and explained the situation. However, he came across with a really condescending tone. "That spot where the can was is for the baby to sit in. You're not supposed to put stuff there. This is a shopping cart, like at costco. Ever been to costco?" We started to explain, but he cut in and said, "What? What do you want me to do about it? You need a bandaid?" "If you don't want a bandaid, I can't do anything about it." And with that, he just walked off without another word. The fault of the can falling was a cause of our own, but that doesn't excuse the manager's attitude. Especially when we weren't even making a formal complaint, just trying to inform him of what happened. I work in customer service everyday and can't imagine ever speaking to anyone like that. I usually let these bad experiences pass each day, but didn't want to leave it be since it was my own mom. read more

This used to be HK 2 Food District. Went to the meat department to get some meat. Many staff are there but no one pay attention. Many are talking and one staff is on the cell phone. I stand there for quite a few minutes and one staff finally come to my aid. The place is still with the same staff. The cashier has changed to a different area. read more

It's a hit-and-miss with this store. True, they have a variety of veggies and snacks. Some of their vegetables were old and crinkly and not fresh. I was wondering why would they still be out when obviously no one will buy them. Their meat section is okay. Also, their prices are either really good or expensive in comparison to other Asian stores. I did see some meat start browning a little bit which indicates it's been out for a long time. I still go there for a quick run when I need something that is not available in regular grocery stores. read more

More than 15of the item were stocked under the wrong label. The correct label was nowhere on the shelves. The place looks great but since they have a new owner I noticed that a lot of basic Filipino items that they used to have are missing.

Very poor service. So many items without prices. Cashier told us she could not sell an item because she does not know the price. Told us to wait and talked to a co-worker to assist. However, cashier did not advise us that the co-worker was unable to help so we waited for nothing. When I asked again, she said to wait for the Manager but he was of no help as well and told us to come back tomorrow (as if I would return to their store). Wasted a lot of time waiting for nothing. While this was all happening, a lady came to return an umbrella she just bought because it was broken and another gentlemen was told by the same cashier that she doesn't know the prices of 2 items in his cart. Alright a few things to note here so listen up-- I live not too far from here so I regularly shop here. It's always been a good experience-- EXCEPT for the fish and meat departments. The butchers give attitude. They don't do any special orders. They pretend to not understand you if you don't speak the same language as they do.. so recently I went to get a fresh fish, I picked a nice big fresh looking one out, the best of the few they had left, and he asked if I'd like it cut. I said sure thank you, I appreciate that... I guess I didn't understand what that meant because he just took the fish and chopped it in half. I thought he meant clean it, maybe cut off the tail, head, fins... or prepare it for roasting with slits in the fish, but no. Okay so maybe that's my fault.. I then ask for another one, as they are rolling their eyes at me, for probably not asking for the second fish earlier and I say "no cut"-- at this point I'm ready to do all the gutting and cleaning myself.. they start descaling it-- then he hands it to the first dude that cut my fish, and immediately he goes for the big chopper, and I say NOOOO no cut no cut. And so he bags it up as is, didn't even gut the fish. Alright fine... I end up buying both fish-- the cut one now sitting in my freezer, I don't even know why I would want a fish cut like that in the first place-- I have NEVER seen anyone cut a fish like that. Flash forward to today... I'm there trying to get a pound of ground pork.. they are low, but I ask if there's anyway they can ground some up for me and he says "no more" and I'm thinking, you're telling me, you're 100% sold out of ground pork for the whole day? You can't ground up the last half pound I need for my recipe? "No- no more" even if I waited there's not going to be more? okay. Fine. Whatever maybe that's my fault too. Let's move on to non butcher related stuff-- Let's talk about packaged meats, and live seafood. Packaged meats, there's definitely a lot to look at and choose from-- organs, chicken feet. Cool. But do not- do NOT buy the discounted meat. Trust me it's already gone beyond bad. I'm not sure if they still do this or not since the "new ownership"... but none the less-- discounted meat is no good from here. Alright next we got live fish, and even live frogs. Sorry, what did you say, live frogs? Yes, live frogs for eating! That's normal in certain places.. yes indeed. But keeping them in a 40gal aquarium tank stacked on each other is not safe or healthy for them or the consumer. By the way why are we selling live frogs if we only eat the legs? I'm sure a lot of them have died a sad, slow and miserable death-- much like the fish from their live aquariums! One time I saw a butcher take one out for a family, who had kids with them, and slammed the fish onto the ground as the woman and kids let out a small gasp. Like really dudes? Is this the best way? He picked the stunned fish up and finished it off with his knife on the table. Sure that can also kinda be normal in some places.. but really? The new developments within the plaza have been nice.. but it really does not match the energy these butchers put out. This place is supposedly under new management, if this is true, I hope they take a look at replacing the butchers. There is only one butcher currently who I always give props to for his excellent service, if he's not there I won't even bother anymore after today. They should have ground me some pork otherwise I would have kept all this to myself lol I will say though, I do enjoy the selection (besides the meat/seafood) there is a lot of nice snacks, drinks, and specialty items that are very difficult to find elsewhere. read more
