We had our vehicle towed here after it died in the parking lot of our apartment. We asked them to diagnose what was wrong with it as it was a 15+ year old model and wanted to be safe. They put it in the air and then assured us we needed coils and spark plugs, work that would add up to more than 700 dollars. After we had that work done it still was driving oddly so we got a second opinion. That when it was discovered that the frame was well rusted and wasn't safe to drive, something that any mechanic with any scruples would have noticed and alerted us to! WTF! Took my truck in for an oil change and tire rotation. The mechanic took the old filter off and forgot to put a new one back on. He did call later and tell me to bring the truck back in to put one on. Not sure how to make this 4.5 stars but they deserve it. They have done simple oil changes & tire rotations but have also made me aware of problems I knew existed but blew off because of pricing concerns. I shouldn't have worried. They are very economical considering the complexity of the systems involved. I was expecting to pay thousands of dollars (based on other estimates) and what I paid was less than $!000. They do excellent work ,in a timely manner, and they are friendly & informative (you can ask questions without feeling like a dummy and know that the fixes will save your car & maybe even your life). read more

My car was no completed on time. Even after I picked it up 5 days late I had to take it back twice. East side never fixed the problem but they were glad to keep my money. Ended up getting a used transmission from Schmidt's so I could drive my car. Make sure to get paperwork if you have the misfortune of dropping your car of there. My fiancé and I were taking a road trip recently. You see, I live in Phoenix and my fiancé was living in Milwaukee at the time. We had been in a long distance relationship ship for over four years, and he was now making the final move to AZ. The purpose of our trip was to drive his beloved 1989 Chevy Suburban (aka "Moby Dick", the white whale) and the last of his belongings across the country to begin a new chapter of our lives together. We packed ol' Moby to the gills, so to speak, and headed out of Milwaukee on our cross country voyage. Well, we got as far as Madison when the transmission blew, oily fluid spraying from the underbelly of the 'burb like ocean water from a whale's blow hole. A disaster for sure, but we were fortunate to make it safely off the freeway, coasting into a service station parking lot. I immediately started searching local transmission shops and came across East Side Automotive and Transmission. Customer reviews were great, and we were sold. Our big issue was that it was a Saturday evening and the shop was already closed, and would be until Monday morning. We had to make a decision quickly, and decided to cross our fingers, have Moby towed to East Side, rent a vehicle, and continue on our road trip as we had to get back to work/school in a few days. We left the white whale stranded there and slipped a note under the door detailing our surly situation and contact info. Monday morning, a nice man named Chad called us. He evaluated the vehicle, and worked out all the repair details with my fiancé. The work was completed on time and at a fair price. Being that arrangements now had to be made to have Moby Dick transported to us in AZ, Chad and East Side were very patient and understanding with our unusual timeline for picking up the vehicle. Chad and his staff went above and beyond for us, turning an event that could have left us tossed about on a "stormy sea", into a slight detour on pleasantly placid waters. On Monday, I brought my car into have it diagnosed. The next day, they call backed to inform us that timing chain and suspension work needed to be replaced. We agreed to have them fix it and car would be done by Friday. I called and emailed midday Wednesday to follow up with repair but didn't receive a response until Friday. The service guy said Chad McGraw (general manager) was out of office and had no idea when our car would be repaired. So, we waited until Chad called us which was Friday and told us that car would not be fixed until next week Tuesday because mechanic was sick. Fast forward to Tuesday, the car still was not done, we didn't get our car back until 5:00pm on Friday when shop was getting ready to close. More so, I clarified line by line of with chad on what they repaired on my car and asked him verbally did he complete all the work he responded, "yes except for wheel bearing". And he claimed he did additional work and testing that he didn't charge. While driving home we noticed the steering wheel was off and shop was close on weekends. Waited until Monday to speak with chad, asked him if I can go over work order, he said sure. So, I asked if he repaired everything on invoice, he said yes, so I went line by line to understand because I explained to him that wheel alignment was off even though you confirmed work. He became offensive then proceeded to yell and scream along line I gave you discount, and I did the work and should not ask me any questions. I replied what's wrong with you then he hanged up on me and screened my calls. I was very confused as to what just happened. All I tried to do is seek to understand. Had to call corporate to file a complaint and get them involved to attempt to reconcile the situation. A long story short I took my car to two other napas autocare to have it fully diagnosed and replaced parts that was not done even though he said he did it. The last autocrat said the car was not fully diagnosed and should've perform an engine compression test. Come to find out my engine needs to be replaced and manager and his boss refused to give my money back. Stay away from Eastside Automotive and Transmission and Chad. I was pulling a U-Haul trailer from Michigan when my van started to lose power on I-90 in Madison. I saw that I was leaking transmission fluid and began to look for a nearby transmission service garage. When I got to Eastside Transmission the first thing I noticed is they keep a very clean shop. There were only two techs on duty and were busy. Dan quickly looked at the two vehicles ahead of me then came over to look at my car within minutes. He took time look it over well and determined that the transmission was getting hot and discharging fluid out the overflow line. He said I needed to let it cool and take it out of over-drive and I should be fine. I was on my way in 20 minutes and didn't even charge me for the diagnosis. My car broke down about 1 mile from this shop so I called and explained what was going on with it. The guy I spoke with on the phone listened kindly, and explained they'd be able to diagnose it the same day; however, wouldn't likely be able to fix it until Monday as it was already mid-morning on Friday. I had AAA tow it to their shop and they called a few hours later to give me the diagnosis and estimate. From there on out, everything went exactly as they'd said it would -- the car was ready by the end of the day the following Monday as indicated, and the cost was exactly what they quoted me. I've now driven the car for a week and everything is perfect with the clutch. I'd highly recommend them, and while I obviously hope to not need any more work on my car anytime soon, if I did, I'd comfortably return to their shop. read more

Shitty work and I regret taking my car there. My car was at their shop for over 2weeks and 1125.00$ later my car was not fixed. I ended up taking my car to a different dealer and having the problem fixed properly. I was told that a bunch of my wire harness clips were broken before I brought the car in but they were not because I seen all of them. When they put my transmission in they put my hoses and wires all twisted up and in the wrong places. I would not recommend taking your vehicle to these clowns if you care about your vehicle. read more

BUYER BEWARE!!! I took my trans. in for a rebuild, received a 2 yr. 24,000 mile warranty. The trans. died and left me stranded out of town. Ended up pulling the vehicle home (approx.200 miles). I called East Side from the side of the road and they said to bring it in. Pulled it back into East Side and they said that they "looked" at it externally. Told us that it only had a 1 yr. 12,000 mile warranty and they weren't going to fix it. So we pulled it another 25 miles back home and pulled the original receipt which said 2 yr. 24,000 mile warranty right on it. Called Mitch back and they REFUSED to honor it. The trans had only 13,000 and 1.5 yrs on it. It is currently sitting at the DATCP waiting for results. I highly recommend finding and honest and honorable transmission place one that will keep their word. read more

I took a 1/2 day last week to get my transmission flushed. I dropped my car at 11:45AM...I finally got a call at 4:00PM letting me know they didn't have the right piece of equipment to do the job, and that I would need to bring it back. No apology, no "sorry for the inconvenience"...just said "the Shop Manager will call you when we get the piece of equipment in, which should be a day or two." Mind you I made the appt a week in advance, so they had more than enough time to know and get what they needed to do the job. So Monday goes by, no call. Tuesday goes by, no call. I decided to give them until lunchtime on Wednesday before I would take my business elsewhere. It's now Friday afternoon, a week since I initially brought my car in, and they still haven't called. Today I ended up taking my car to the new Meineke right down the road on Milwaukee St, which ended up being $35 cheaper than this place was going to charge me anyways. Won't be bothering going back here, as they clearly don't want my business. read more

I have a 2005 minivan & knew my transmission was starting to slip. After reading the reviews here, I decided to give them a try. What I learned: spend the extra money & go to the dealership. First, I was quoted a price that I was told *included* tax, but when I went to pick up my van, tax was extra. I was told I was mistaken. Hmm. Then decided to read through the fine print of my warranty, only to read that it wouldn't be valid unless I brought it in for a follow-up inspection within 15 days. Hmm...would have thought maybe ETS could have mentioned that; they didn't. I wonder how many people *think* they have warranty coverage. I thought all was great until I was driving across country (10 months later) & my transmission failed (tachometer going crazy, smoke pouring from my engine) while crossing a bridge with construction on a Friday, late afternoon. Eek! Thankfully the warranty allows for me to get it fixed at any local shop. Sadly, my warranty only covered $500 of labor - and no one can replace the tranny for under $800. With tax, I paid over $450 out of pocket. That's in addition to the $150 for a week of car rental and $75 in gas to go pick up my van & bring it home. What I learned from the other tranny repair shop was that for an additional $44.00 I could upgraded my warranty to have $1,000 worth of labor coverage. When spending $3500 for the transmission with a warranty, what is another $44? And would you think that the warranty starts over? No. Now I have no coverage for labor if it fails again. It will all be out of pocket. Looks like I'm going to be buying a new car within the year with a service department I can trust. No small shops like this one for me.
