I tried the Kimchi Jigae - there was a piece of wire in the soup. Other than the wire, the jigae was nothing great. Although the kimchi and tofu were good, the soup itself was just not that good. Any HMart food court blows this place away. And there was the piece of wire (the type you find holding together a take-out food container) - could have used the meal without that. At the same meal, my co-worker got a Bibimbap that had the egg overcooked, the vegetables unpickled, and generally a subpar Gochujang. I wouldn't recommend Green Apple for the Korean food and won't be going back for Pho, unless I get a taste for some staples or nails in my soup. read more

Bad location, pretty good food! I got some kind of Korean bip-something (suggested by a coworker) and it comes in a container with varies veggies, rice, an egg, and some chicken that is somewhat spicy. Also, they have a pretty good Korean BBQ sauce for you to dip your chicken in. If you walk into that food court, you will understand the surprise. Give it a try. I've been disappointed by the authenticity of ethnic food in the River North/Loop area, but Green Apple makes me very, very happy. The jap chae is gigantic, and amazing - one order will feed me for several meals. And pho, swoon! Even my non-adventurous coworkers have asked what I ordered because it smelled so delightful. They give you all the fixings on the side, to make your delicious pho have such flavor complexity. And, it's cheap. The area's a little food court, so I get my food to go, but it's very reasonably priced, and the food is always steaming hot and the staff polite. read more

I'm definitely not an expert, but this place is good. I got the chicken and vegetable pho, and the broth was super flavorful. There were so many vegetables in it that made it very colorful. However, there wasn't a lot of chicken in it, and what was in it, was dry. It was $11, but I got a huge bowl, and I will definitely get another meal out of it. This place is hidden Jewel in downtown! I found this place couple of weeks ago and have tried Bibimbap and Gomtang...Frankly speaking I did not expect that much for the first time because it seemed small food court restaurant...well...I was wrong. They have my favorite PHO, with seafood. Absolutely delicious (except the fishball could taste weird sometimes...). Their broth is different from what you have at other PHO places. It is more salty, more concentrated and I love it. They also serve the soup with cilantro instead of basil, which in my opinion tastes 10x better in PHO. Very poor quality of food. Tried the meatball pho. The soup for the pho tasted like water with some added chicken powder and they just use frozen Italian meatball. Tasted awful. I also tried the bim bim bop which was also terrible. They gave me a tiny bit of meat and used large amount lettuce which isn't the right ingredient to use for this dish. Wow, I can't believe this place exists downtown in the loop! I have to say that it's better than the Ba Le on Washington since the noodles there were overcooked. This spot impresses me and you have to get here for lunch early because they do get quite a line. I felt bad because they seemed so understaffed. It looked like a family business of Koreans with the grandparents doing all kinds of work. They were assembling the food, making smoothies, picking up plates that were left on tables, cleaning, and cooking. My heart goes out to them because it looked like crazy busy was kicking their butts. We had to wait a while almost after we were finished with our meal before we got our drinks. It was worth it though, surprisingly good for a food court area. I will certainly be back, especially during the winter time when hot pho soup is much needed. They moved by the Chase building! And it's cold! So I decided to try something other than Pho, which is still pretty okay in my book if you're jonsin' for some in the loop. The Kimchi stew, mannnn....THE KIMCHI STEW! That is where it's at. It reminds me a lot of the Vietnamese Pickled Mustard Soup - if you're Viet, you'll know what I'm talking about. In an attempt to kill some time before my train left during a particularly frigid day in Chicago, I Yelped reviews of nearby Vietnamese places and came across this one. The fact that it was a hole-in-the-wall in a food court only made it more appealing to me. I hauled my ass over there and ordered the pho (please pronounce it correctly) and jap chae, both to-go, the latter to be eaten on my train ride home. I'll be up front, I ordered the vegetarian pho, which some traditionalists might immediately reject. It was good, it wasn't the best I've had, but I really enjoyed the tofu and broccoli, as well as the broth and noodles. The jap chae, which is a Korean dish, was amazing! I ate it on the train, trying not to spill it on the seat next to me the whole time I wolfed it down. The glass noodles and beef were well seasoned, and the beef wasn't the fatty, grisly kind you often get in such establishments (one reason I ordered the vegetarian pho). I highly recommend this restaurant, although I would suggest getting take out. read more

Huh. I am somewhat tempted to go back and order something else at Green Apple after reading so many positive reviews. After all, it is no small feat to find good Korean food/pho downtown. Maybe I just chose the wrong dish on a wrong day- I had a bowl of their pho and did not enjoy it. The portion was big and the meat pretty tasty. However, the noodles were really chewy, the broth bland, and everything was lukewarm. Definitely failed to impress. As I left I mentally kicked myself for trying pho anywhere that isn't Argyle, considering I live a less than 10min bus ride from the neighborhood, but when a craving hits, it hits hard. I am reluctant to give their pho another shot but maybe I'll have better luck with their Korean offerings...an updated review to come later, perhaps! read more

Service is very good, super friendly people there. Lots of sitting space. Food is good for the price. I don't know many quick Asian places in downtown anyways. Good for a quick lunch break. There's no server, they take the meal to your table but you take your tray back. Corn tea is on the house, and very relaxed, no rush sense sitting there. Best pho in downtown! Their broth is beef-based and its got very deep taste to it. First spoon of the soap always makes my day! awesome bibimbap! Even more flavor when you pick the spicy chicken on top of it. Their japchai also very satisfying but light and flavorful with veggies and lots of green onions. Their chicken pho with vegetables is the best thing to eat when you're hungry but need energy and a pick me up. My favorite thing about this Korean joint is their service and attitude with which they serve-i feel their warmth and hospitality. I struggled a wee bit to get to this place (no this doesn't have anything to do with the 3 stars). I was excited to check this place out and when I found it I was cold and ready for some pho! Alright, menus is pretty small but of course all I wanted was pho. Put my order in (meatball pho with a mango smoothie). Really nice staff, they gave me a number and I went ahead and took a seat. They brought my food to the table (super nice). Alright now time for the eeeehhhh part. My bean sprouts looked old, they were a little brown, this was sad because I love my bean sprouts. The cilantro was also old, I know my cilantro, being part of a Mexican family you know when your cilantro is fresh. My limes, also old, I could barely squeeze any lime juice out. I proceeded to take my first bite, the broth was okay noodles seemed a little hard but it wasn't unbearable. Meatballs were good except for the fact that I only got 4 :( Overall it's a quick desperate pho fix if you are around that area. As close to authentic korean soups, Kim chi stews, bibimbap, and cold noodle soup (mul naeng myun) as you can get without trekking to Koreatown (N Lincoln & waaaaaaaay north). I really like this place. It is located in a dingy basement setting, which can be a little off putting. The standout here is the Pho. If you want Pho in the loop, this is your best bet. You get a giant bowl with most of the standard fixings you'd find in a legitimate, Vietnamese-run Pho shop on Argyle (basil, sprouts, lime, jalipeno, etc). The Korean food they serve is decent, and has never left me feeling disappointed. Their Kimchi stew is really nice, as is the soybean stew. Both of these usually come with rice and a side dish. This place totally surprised me. At first I didn't even know where it was located and then I saw the sign just under the DD banner. I knew this place was good when i noticed the line. The location gives it such a city vibe that is amazing. I ordered the bulgogi whilst my cousin got the seafood Ph. I was very pleased at the tastes that I experienced here.
