This is CRAZY - I was with them for over 12 years and had no issues until I realized I was out of contract. I was on average billing for 10+ years and never had a problem until I realized my bill had more than doubled in a year. It wasn't until after I cancelled that they actually called me to confirm. I called back to find out that somehow my bill went from $492 in July to $1,155 due in August based on an accumulated balance that was more than double the amount I ever paid. I went from paying an average of $250 per month in 2025 to almost $500 in less than a year. When I cancelled, they sent me a bill for almost $1,200 and after exhausting all options, were unwilling to reduce anything or work with me at all stating their system says it's accurate. Their customer service team was unable to do basic math or understand how averages work and just kept saying that's what the balance is and you must pay it. BE CAREFUL and I would not recommend Green Mountain to ANYONE. read more

i called today to green mountain customer service to try to resolve my billing issues because for the past of half a year or so, we have been paying 300 a month on light on which me and my family live in a 3 bed room and 2 bath apartment. I tried working something out with them and they were just rude. With the economy being the way it is, it's hard to keep paying that much a month, plus, we're barely starting the year and already my bill is 311.00, ridiculously high, when asked why, they just keep giving me and my wife the run around with term that we don't even understand. I live in a small one bedroom apartment. Even though I'm upstairs, I live on the "cold" side of the building that gets all the shade. There's even a large tree outside my window. I have friends that have a two story, 3 bedroom house. They don't have any trees around their house. They keep their lights on all the time and keep the ac or heat going all the time. And yet.........MY electric bill is always at least TWICE as much as theirs!!!! They are with a standard electric company here, and I am with a supposed "clean energy" electric company that supposedly gets its electricity from windmills and "clean energy", and Green Mountain boasts they save money by doing that. So WHY is MY bill always TWICE the amount of my friends with a 2 story house?!!!! I've even switched to all LED light bulbs and have thick, blackout curtains over my windows. My electricity provider is Green Mountain Energy. I have been a loyal customer to Green Mountain Energy for eight plus years. Green Mountain Energy sent a person install thermostats to my house. The person who came to my house stole my thermostats. He installed Vivint thermostats that do not work properly. I have contacted both Green Mountain Energy and Vivint multiple times in writing and phone calls. However both have not resolved any issues and took any action. GME changed the contract rate structure (they blame the Texas State PUC for the change). Even though the "Renewable Rewards Plan" says they pay credits for solar surplus retuned to the grid, they cap the credit at the amount use... nothing above that. For 7 years I had no bills due to building up credits through the summer for winter low sun days. I was sending twice my usage back to the grid on summer months. This year I began to receive increasing bills and no surplus credits. I downloaded my Texas SmartMeter usage for Sep-Oct 2023 and I can easily see the surplus I sent to the grid. So I know they have the data for the 2023 surplus credits. I will be canceling my GME contract next year. How could the PUC make this significant change impacting the Solar community? Are we supposed to support the grid for free??? Talk about environmental responsibility, very disappointed. read more

I would not recommend GME to anyone looking to switch. If you have Solar installed on your house they no longer allow rollover credits. This is blatant theft from the customer as GME absorbs and re-sells these credits without providing compensation. read more

Scam. I can also confirm bad experience with these guys. I was 'sold' on it at the Park Slope Greenmarket. Told my energy bill would only be 10% higher and I was supporting Green energy. I agreed and they have me on that rate for 3 months, and then it went up significantly. DIdn't notice for quite some time until I called ConEd about a problem. ConEd was charging .06 / kilowatt vs 15.9c from Green Mountain! 250% higher not 10%! Scamming people for the cause of supporting green energy initiatives is up there with robbing widows and children.... Shame on them. And how are they still allowed to be in business. read more

I wish more companies cared about ending contracts, as they do in getting contracts. When I cancelled service, due to a move, they apparently sent me a follow up email that I needed to respond to in order to confirm the cancellation that I had already sent. I did not see this additional email. They did not call, send another email, or try to contact me at all. However, they did get a request for new service with a new customer in my home and did not cancel my service until they turned the new one on (actually billed both of us for the same day). When I contacted them to request a reversal of the fee (which was only one week), the said there was no valid point for a dispute of charges. They just kept saying, "you didn't respond to the email". It's hard to respond to an email you didn't know you got and I would expect some type of follow up from the company....I AM THE CUSTOMER! Very happy I do not have to use their service in the future. My apartment complex forced us to use this service as our provider. The "rates" that they say will be standardized and/or flat change monthly which is a deviation from the agreement that I signed with them. The worst part - When moving to a new apartment, I requested that the power be transferred to the new apartment on May 25, 2019. On April 25, 2019, my power was inadvertently turned off. After talking to the Mexican call center, they were unable and unwilling to reconnect the power immediately without consideration to the below: 1. 85 degree Houston heat 2. Two pets in the home 3. Medical necessity that required electricity This company who acts as an agent for CenterPoint is completely a scam. After this debacle (where I WAS going to use them for continued provider) I will never...EVER....use this horrible company again. I would advise anyone that uses this company to look for a different agent. IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE, FIND SOMEONE ELSE! As you can see below- their canned response is poison for their business. Straight up lied to my face. I was at my local farmers market and their representative told me there were no fees for cancelling and that I wasn't locked into anything if I signed up. I asked this question 3 times. I review all the welcome packet info I received and right there it says that I would be locked in for 12 months if i don't cancel within 3 days. I then Googled them and see nightmares like what you see on this page. It's obvious it wasn't an oversight but predatory sales tactics. Liars, thieves, crooks. How are they even allowed to do what they do? I pay my bills early every month, and I'm just realizing that I've been charged disconnect notices and disconnect fees every month even though my power has never been turned off. Neither me or my roommate use much energy in a 900 SQ ft apartment and our bills average $190/ month for the last seven months so we decided to look into it. Step 1: I call green mountain energy and I am offered no help whatsoever. Step 2: I email green mountain energy, same level of service but they do leave me Oncor's number. Step 3: I call oncor and find out that our usage is incredibly low for an apartment, and that we should be looking at $35-40 bills per month. Insane. They've raised our rate monthly even though it's a "fixed rate plan." They charge random fees that make no sense even though I pay early every single month. They double bill for random months hoping you won't notice. Now I have to pay $150 disconnect fee to change providers on top of my $190 bill that isn't even due for two weeks but somehow has disconnect charges attached to it. Mind you I just paid a bill a week ago. I honestly don't understand how there's not a huge lawsuit against this company going on, but you better believe I'm saving my bills and my happy ass will be in court as soon as one begins. Stay away from green mountain energy at all costs, please. The energy game in Texas is all a big scam. We're SOL, y'all. read more

Frustrating to say the least. Upon cancellation of my account, I was met with a $150 termination fee on a Month to Month contract. Their Terms and Agreements clearly states they cannot charge a termination agreement for such accounts. After calling (over 3 hours total on the phone) I was told I had agreed to a new plan over the phone but provided no evidence of that agreement. Forewarning, all phone conversations are considered binding, without so much as an email follow up or contract sent over. This by itself is frustrating, but this isn't the only experience. I also paid a bill through their online bill pay and it was not received due to the payment portal. I was emailed my receipt and a "thank you for your payment". A few weeks later my electricity was turned off and was told that i did not make my monthly payment. After multiple hours on the phone and proof of payment, they did reinstate my electricity but charged me a new fee for that as well. All of this to say I have NEVER written a Yelp review, but feel inclined due to the service I have received recently. Nearly every other provider is half the price of Green Mountain and their customer service leaves some to be desired. Individually, they have a few great customer service reps, but their overall customer service is horrible. Save yourself some energy (no pun intended) and find someone more reasonably priced. read more

We've switched to Green Mountain Energy some months ago, and our bill has skyrocketed compared to last year's, even though the salesperson claimed it would only increase by 8% at most. We're now waiting for our account to be canceled, which should "take up to 30 days" according to their rep. We'll see what becomes of this. My electric bill has no business being $311! After calling PeCO and GME I was offered a $60 credit. $60? You stole from me for 5 YEARS and all I get is a $60 credit?! I called back and threatened to contact the PUC and that got a manager to offer $470. And I can tell she was talking thru her teeth with a condescending tone. $470 is still peanuts compared what I'm owed over 5 years. Only giving one start because it makes you. Needless to say, stay away from this company. Your average bill will be a car payment in an average sized house or apartment. My bills average 250-350 and we barely run the AC. In the beginning our electric bill was around 150-170, but has skyrocketed within the last 8-12 months. They get real disconnect happy and send notices a week after bill is supposed to be due. The fact that I'm paying to keep the lights on when I could be driving a second car is absolutely ludicrous. (Mind you I live in an average home that has all new energy efficient insulation and windows) so I know I'm getting hosed! We will be switching to any other provider and hope to save a minimal of 2000 dollars a year after looking at the payments we have been making to green mountain. read more

Green Mountain's customer service is horrible. I knew my bill was due soon so I called them since I had yet to receive it in the mail. I paid over the phone. I received the bill the next day, it had been mailed two days prior, as you can see from the photo. Of course I was charged a late fee on the next bill, which was ALSO received late. I called and they removed the late fee, and I paid the bill right then. Guess what? I got charged ANOTHER late fee! I called to have this one removed, but they said it was only a ONE TIME courtesy, and couldn't do it again. I told them it was THEIR screw up in mailing the bills late, so the courtesy wasn't being done for me, it was done for them. They wouldn't budge, even when I suggested I'd find another electric company. So I did. I switched to Reliant the next day. Green Mountain charges more than some other companies, but I was happy to be using 100% wind energy. But the hassle of inept billing and poor customer service isn't worth it. I have my electric bill on autopay and after a few months with a high bill, I found out that I was paying nearly 3 times the amount I would pay with my normal electric provider. Nothing sent in the mail to let you know you need to call and negotiate a lower rate. Sign up with Green Mountain if you enjoy paying triple for supposedly green energy. read more

Horrible customer service! I have had these guys for 6 month. Their bills come on the 18th of every month, and are due by the 6th. I have had 6 disconnection notices because they make the bills due at the first week of every month. I need more than 2 weeks to budget out my electric bill, I usually require 3. Some of us live paycheck to paycheck, and any other monthly service gives me a month to pay my bill, and those bills don't fluctuate with the weather. So to top it all off. I am signed up for paperless billing. I signed up on the internet, and expect all notices to come electronically. But what does GM do, send paper disconnect notices. I don't check my mail. After getting shut off twice because of that, I finally got one in my email box. Now when I need a small extension (a few days) to pay my bill, they won't allow it!!! Not because of my power getting shut off twice, but because they have sent disconnect notices. And I told them I would be paying the bill in full. This company sucks, and I have seen the increase in charges as well. My bill went from $80 the first month in my apartment, to $120/150 per month since then. Stay away, just run as fast as you can. read more

I have been with Green Mountain for four years now. They have no real customer loyalty program. One of the reps told me that once I made it to two years, I would get better rates, so I waited and signed up for another 12 month contract. Indeed they quoted me a lower per kwH rate, but their fees are ridiculous and my bill still increased. To make a long story short, I haven't moved, but my rates have steadily increased over the past three years. All of my friends pay less than I do with other services. I really haven't had any issues with them other than the fact that they don't do anything special for customers. So since it's just about electricity, the only incentive to stay with a company is if you're getting a better price. GM is expensive and do nothing in the way of customer incentives or appreciation. I guess I misunderstood their definition of "green". Switching as soon as my contract ends. I hear there is a fee for discontinuing service with them as well. So you have to pay to not use them lol. read more

we called to try and get our electricity switched over so we wouldn't lose power in TEXAS!!!!!! they said it should be fine and everything, whatever. wake up the next day what do you know? no damn power. it's hot as hell, our fans aren't working, ice cream in the freezer all melted, food ruined! we call them back and ask wtf happened and they told us "oh it seems as though it was rejected" ?????????? maybe do your job and see it through? if it doesn't take then send an email or call us back for christ's sake, they didn't do that! so we had to call back and talk with someone else who was actually competent and fixed the problem and had our power back on within 20 minutes. could've been avoided with even a little common sense. read more

Absolutely zero customer service and they RIP OFF people with solar. I posted this to their facebook page this morning to try and get their attention after 2.5 months of the runaround and being ignored, and despite being assured that someone would contact me, we have not received a call, 7 hours later. Customers are obviously not a priority. Extremely disappointed customer here. We went with Green Mountain in October after installing a solar system in Ft. Worth. We have yet to receive any credit for our produced solar. I have called upwards of 6 times, been transferred around to people who can't answer any questions and don't know who I should speak with, left voicemails that have never been returned. Bottom line, we are being ripped off by Green Mountain Energy. After over 75 days of having solar online, we have received no credit for our produced energy and there are no answers in sight. No one with with your company seems interested or capable of helping us. My next few calls will be to find a new energy provider and local news and media outlets to see if they would be interested in a story about how the supposedly greenest company, Green Mountain Energy is ripping off their customers who install solar. read more

They let someone open an account in my name. Found out when it showed up on my credit report. I called on 3/24/22 they said it would be handled and removed from my report. Fast forward to today 4/8/22 and I called back and they said it was never forwarded to the investigation department. I spoke with a lady in the collection department and she said she can't just remove it. I asked how someone would do this and what verification does someone need to open an account. She said you only need a name a ssn. No ID no other verification. WOW in this day and age you would think they would be a little more careful. She said I have to file a police report and then also file it with the credit commissioners office. I live in CA and this company is in TX. Horrible customer service read more
