Made me sick as a dog. Ordered from there last night. I can't have gluten. They have a portion of the menu dedicated gluten free. I was excited to try. I got the chicken and broccoli and it was substantially underwhelming, but it solved me being hungry. The next day (today) I am in and out of the bathroom every 30 minutes for first few hours of my morning. You can't advertise gluten free and then get your customers sick. If I had a worse allergy than I do I would be in the hospital. Don't eat here, they don't care about the health of their customers, and the food sucked. read more

Meh Yup that sums up my review... Just kidding So a bunch of friends and family swore to us this place would have theeeee best Chinese food we've had the the ability to grace our palates with... They are no longer friends ... Can't choose your family ;) We figured "oh its in Farmington... This will be effing great".. We got all dressed up and even called to make reservations for 8 since it was a Saturday night.... Should have ordered local delivery and saved myself $60.... Here we go So the place has a ton of parking available... Hmmm why? We walk in and the greet us immediately and bring us to a table... Without have ANY idea who we were. What I'm getting at is we didn't even need a reservation :/ why? We were sat, and promptly greeted by a waiter. This man said three words in English. Asking very simple questions about the menu he guessed answers and would come back with something completely different than what we asked for. He did not bring the dim sum menu without us asking.. For people who didn't come FOR the dim sum, well they would have no clue they even serve it. While placing the order the man repeated 47 times what we were getting, and by repeating I mean pointing at the items on the menu and grunting since he couldn't speak English. After confirming the order yet again he finally scurried away Maybe ten minutes later we got our dim sum and crab rangoon as well as fried noodles and duck sauce. The dim sum was honestly nothing special at all; I've had better at Chinese buffets in new Britain. The crab Rangoon was good.. But let's all be honest its hard to screw them up... Crab some cheese and wrap it up to fry bam done. The noodles were good. But again fried rice product is not a culinary feat I ordered the general tsos chicken combo with white meat (this is extra) which came with an egg roll and pork fried rice. The general tsos had a picturesque quality to it.. It didn't not live up to the visual hype. The white meat chicken was like chicken strips that were pounded into thinnnn reductions of their former self to then be tossed around in a wok far to look thus cooking them into some form of chicken leather... Oh but the sauce on them was OK The rice.. Good. Nothing to write home about Egg roll... Must I repeat the whole "fried rice..no big.."?? My fiance ordered the boneless BBQ spare ribs w/ chicken finger combo. Same thing came with rice and an egg roll. The spare ribs could have passed as jack links jerky with a small amount of red tangy sauce drizzled on them. The chicken fingers... Well tasted like chicken fingers.. Overall for $80 I was not impressed at all and will not be back... The service almost didn't exist because their was no connection between the waiter and us and the food was a waste of my ten minute drive .. Again should have ordered delivery .. My son and I enjoyed lunch at on Sunday after a movie. My Son is a very particular eater, he enjoyed the General Taos Chicken very much and the pork fried rice. I found the boneless spare ribs and beef Teriyaki very yummy. The Hot and Sour Soup was very good. The service and atmosphere are passable the price very reasonable for the two minus the tip less than $20. Nice place to eat and spend sometime with a friend or you Must have liked it we returned. Wanted to add today to my prior review that this is a nice relaxed place that has windows on every wall of the dinning area, makes for a nice airy feeling. Today had the pepper steak, was very good. We ordered online and the order was ready when they said but the dumpling dough was thick and chewy, the "jasmine" rice was hard and unflavored, the Sesame Chicken was not chunks of breast but strips of chewy unidentifiable meat, the Szechuan Beef was boiled beef bits in bbq sauce. Its a shame how a restaurant would lose a star due to bad service. The boyfriend was hungry one early evening after work. Since he was craving for some asian food, he thought he would swing by the restaurant for some take out since we have dined in once before. There was one guy at the counter where the boyfriend approached waiting for his order to be taken. Instead of the employee acknowledging a customer and taking his order, he ignores and just stands there looking at something on the counter knowlingly. It must have been something exceptionally important to upset and to lose customer who could have been "a loyal customer." Especially when he drove a bit far to get there. They should seriously re-train themselves on customer service. Wasnt too impressed the first time we've been there and dined. read more

Pretty bad food. Disappointing to say the least considering a few years ago I was there and it was decent. Spring Rolls - crappy, just soggy cabbage in a greasy shell. Tasteless. Won Ton Soup - Broth was decent, nothing special for sure but not offensive. The wontons were offensive. They didn't even hold together. They were a soggy and disgusting mess. No green onions or pork slivers. The wontons were the big problem though. Fried Dumplings - not too bad except for some reason they felt it necessary to add sugar to the dipping sauce. Not necessary. Pork Egg Foo Young - horrible, no flavor and greasy. If there was actually pork in this, we could not find it. And we tried. Then there's the "sauce" they give you with it. Way over thickened and again, they put too much sweetener in it. It also was not the correct flavor for Egg Foo Young. Just some random concoction they threw together. This is a simple dish and as such the ingredients and how they are handled is important. But with minimal effort, good, fresh ingredients and a little technique, it's a great dish. If you can't turn out a decent version of a simple dish you should consider a new "chef". read more

I used to live down the street, and I still miss the firecracker chicken. I try to stop here whenever I'm in the area. This Chinese restaurant does a good takeout business but has a large dining area. Comfortable seats and a full bar make this a nice restaurant to eat at. The rest of my family likes the steamed dumplings here. Meals that aren't fried can be hit or miss depending on the day, but if you want strips of white meat chicken fried and served with a yummy slightly spicy sauce then order the firecracker chicken and enjoy. read more

I went recently for a sample of takeout. Shrimp dumplings good. Coconut shrimp delicious. Pork dumplings and Vegetable dumplings were gummy and filling dry. Beef and Broccoli was dry and no extra sauce, just coated beef and cooked broccoli. The leftover factor was not existent and ended up throwing out anything I did not eat as reheating did not make things salvageable. read more

My coworker and I were looking for a place to grab a bite and we ended up settling here. The restaurant was dead at 12:30 in the afternoon almost to a point of being wary of what the food would be like. Our waiter was prompt and brought water and fried noodles to the table almost as soon as we sat down. The food was okay, I mean it was chinese food and I've never had a particularly spectacular experience anywhere. I opted for a tangerine/beef dish and was surprised to see they used brown rice in the fried rice which was a nice touch. I will start with a most unfortunate fact: our hot tea was brought to our table in a carafe that was visibly filthy. The spout was ringed by a brownish sludge, and the bottom and sides were coated in some sort of dried sauce. My boyfriend and I should have left on the spot, for this was a harbinger of the magic that was yet to come. Our egg roll and spring roll appetizers were good enough - fried, crispy, satisfactory. Our meals, however, were both doused in oil and generally unpalatable. My vegan chick'n and broccoli was soaked in a saucy-oil, yet was pretty bland, nonetheless. I kept thinking I caught some flavour, but ultimately realized that it was just my imagination. It LOOKED like it should have packed a powerful punch, being so wet...but alas, rein. My boyfriend ordered a veggie lo mein dish. He is not a tough critic, and rarely puts up a fuss about dining. His "veggie" noodles contained only the sparsest selection of shredded carrots and cabbage. It was a bona fide paucity of vegetables; imagine the little bits and pieces of veggie-filler that are used in virtually all lo mein dishes. This shrapnel was all that was offered in what was supposed to be a VEGETABLE entree. So here we have my boyfriend, with his many tolerances and critical generosities, unable to bring his leftovers home for a second round. Out of politeness, we allowed our server to package our remaining portions, but upon returning home, we promptly deposited them in the dumpster. Our meals were so lousy that I am honestly surprised that Green Tea can get away with such a poor performance in Farmington - were we to eat the same food from a 1am Hartford-corner junk joint, this review wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Like everyone else, I could say that this is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Connecticut, and quite sadly, I would not be lying. SMH. Let's start with the good. The egg roll. (But had to ask for mustard) Now, on to the "not bad" The hot and sour soup wasn't bad. And then there's the rest... It's nice that they put down a bowl of fried noodles and duck sauce. Unfortunately, I could have lubed my car with these noodles. They were literally dripping with grease. Not "figuratively." Not "metaphorically." Not "hyperbolically." Literally, dripping with grease. I could say "Hey, I eat in Chinatown (Boston) all the time, and I KNOW Chinese food," but that would be kind of obnoxious, even though it's true. I will say, from now having sampled "Chinese" food at a few places in Connecticut, I think I get the idea. You guys actually only eat PuPu platters and drink scorpion bowls. There can be no other reason why places like this and Great Taste get 4 and 5 star reviews. I guess that would be obnoxious too, but I don't know what else to say. On re-reading them, I've come to realize that most of the reviews of these places talk about egg rolls, and spare ribs, and Crab Rangoon. Which is kind of like going to an Italian trattoria and pronouncing it "5 Star" because you like the mozzarella sticks and the house chianti, even if the veal needs to be cut with a chainsaw and the gnocchi could break your teeth. I hate to be a tough guy here, but even if you are really friendly and your atmosphere is pleasant, when you dish up the absolute worst Ma Po Tofu on the planet, you can't get 3 stars. Really, two stars is a gift. Merry Christmas. I've had some "OK" take out from this place in the past, (the Ma-La Duck strips) and figured a sit down meal would have some promise. I figured wrong. I asked the waitress if they could make the Ma Po Tofu spicy. I told her I like spicy food. In fact, when she smiled, I said, "Really, don't dumb it down. I like it hot." What I got was tofu in a gelatinous, salty, flavor-free brown gravy. I only took a second bite in order to confirm just how truly ghastly the first bite truly was. Definitely confirmed. This was bad food. No other way to put it. I asked for it to be taken away, and it was. OK, let's take a look at that Moo Shu Pork. Uh-oh, that brown gravy looks familiar. We played "Where's Waldo" with the pork for a bit. This was mostly a plate full of shredded Chinese cabbage in flavor-free brown gravy. The pancakes were getting stale; while they didn't crack when rolled, they were hard and dry to the touch instead of warm and soft. It's a good thing the dish comes with hoisin sauce, because without the hoisin, this was warm, wet, salty cabbage on a dry pancake. Sound good? There was Shrimp and Scallop in Ginger Sauce. Seriously dull. Yes, there were shrimp and there were scallops, broccoli, water chestnuts and celery too. In a slightly reddish, slightly more flavorful brownish gravy. This dish... I would not order again. A plate of mixed chinese vegetables was a surprise. Broccoli, baby corn, mushrooms, water chestnuts... all still crispy and in a sauce that, although too salty, actually had a pleasant flavor. It was also the only dish that made it to the table hot. The pineapple served at the end was straight from a can. If you are looking for egg rolls, chicken fingers, and teriyaki... knock yourself out. Decent Chinese food? keep moving. The kitchen turns out Cantonese-inspired "American Chinese" food with delightful fresh flavors, colors and textures. Now, this is not anything that you'd get in China. It is, however, tasty food prepared with care. So we appreciate it for what it is. There's a superb appetizer of "salt and pepper shrimp" that are sent out on glazed onions (on one visit they came out on a bean sprout/onion combination). We ordered two on one visit. Hot and sour soup is a good bet for soup lovers. Even their egg rolls are remarkably different from the norm. Sushi is fresh, reasonably priced and attractively plated. They give beef lovers like me a lot to like. Firecracker beef, tangerine beef and steak in peppercorn sauce are all worth trying. A friend swears by their General Tso's Chicken. It's a dish that I think is too sweet -- no matter who prepares it. A simple chicken with mushrooms was showered with ginger and garlic and was not greasy at all while still being full-flavored. Thai dishes (we tried a stir-fry with curry and also the sour shrimp soup) were lacking in chili-pepper kick and lacked flavor. Stick with what they do best. Drinks are very good and are a good value. We've spent some time drinking at the combination alcohol/sushi bar and have wondered why more people haven't discovered this. Drinking and grazing at the bar are a cool way to spend an evening without filling up on one dish. The reason I *almost* gave this restaurant five stars -- the people. Where to begin. The charming manager remembers your drinks, is warm and cheerful. So are the rest of the staff. Sure, there may be a little difficulty communicating anything but the basics to the servers, but they do their best, and in our book that's fine. I know I'm going on here a bit, but I'd be remiss not to say that it's a genuine concern for the customer's comfort and well-being that they convey here, and that's something that many far-more-expensive restaurants miss. There are a lot of sourpusses in the restaurant business who'd do well to take a lesson from the warmth of the people at Green Tea. We'll be going back over and over. read more

I'd heard so much about Green Tea that I had to try it. A few of us got it for take out one night. For appetizers, we ordered 2 orders of crab rangoon and an order of boneless spare ribs. The crab rangoons were amazing. Probably the best crab rangoons I've had. Not too greasy, enough filling for each bite, no weird tasting cheese inside. The boneless spare ribs were also delicious, but the only downside was that they had quite a bit of fat on them. The fat was easy to peel off, but it would have been nice to not have fat at all. For my meal, I ordered chicken with garlic sauce and pork fried rice. The chicken with garlic sauce was tasty, but I think it had a little too much sauce and not enough chicken. The chicken was cut into thin strips and there really wasn't much of it. The rice was good - not the usual yellowy color fried rice, this rice was more of a brown. The rice also didn't have fatty pieces of pork in it. The pork pieces that were in the rice were not too big either. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and would eat Green Tea again, especially the crab rangoons. read more

I think the review probably lands somewhere between 3 and 4 here, but it's difficult to really fully judge as A) I've only been there once and B) there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to distinguish one Chinese Restaurant from the other. That being said, I'd say this one was slightly more expensive than many of the other places in the area, a negative, but that it was slightly better than the other places in the area as well (not saying much). We ordered Wonton Soup, Cashew Chicken, Garlic Chicken, and Pork Dumplings. The Cashew chicken was clearly better than the Garlic Chicken (a letdown) and the soup was OK, but the broth had a bit of a funny taste to it. That being said, it didn't prevent me from eating my whole serving. Maybe I'm being a little harsh because I'd probably go back, but I feel like I've gotten better Chinese Food from a supermarket, even if it was Wegmans. read more

Connecticut has horrible Chinese food. Believe me on this, they do. I grew up outside of Philly from this amazing Chinese food place that I compare every single Chinese restaurant to. I shouldn't but I do because this little restaurant back home is everything a Chinese restaurant should be - unassuming, friendly, good and consistent. Green Tea in Farmington is officially at that level. I've been before - we have eaten there twice and both times have been great. Fast, quiet and delicious food. The service is always stellar. Tonight's takeout was no exception. My boyfriend gets the General Tso's not spicy and he orders it every time because it's consistent and good. I ordered: Hot and Sour Soup - BEST Hot and Sour I have ever had. In fact, I finished it because it was that good. Perfect amount of heat and sweet together and loaded with goodies the way a soup should be. I also had the Beef Teriyaki and Spare Ribs combo with Pork Fried Rice. Just superb, really. The spareribs were all meat and no fat (which is common on a sparerib at most Chinese places unfortunately). The sauce was sweet, not overpowering. The beef was perfectly tender and pulled easily from the skewers. Rice was done perfect - moist, not dry and chock full of veggies and pork. The owner is really nice and is always there which to me, shows a level of commitment to satisfy customers and the care of the quality of food. Will always return. My wife and I only go to Green Tea for Chinese - this location and the one in Simsbury, depending on where we're driving from. Being from NYC, I have a specific expectation for General Tso Chicken - which is different from the recipe in New England apparently. It took us a while to find a Chinese restaurant that does it right for our taste. Everything we have tried on the menu so far is pretty good. The prices are very fair and the food is not overly greasy. I would avoid getting complex drinks from the bar - because they are not done correctly. We usually stick with bottled beer - which can't be screwed up. We'll be definitely coming back. read more

Awful. Where to start? Went there tonight with family of four because we wanted sushi (per the sign out front). No sushi. The Mai Tai was the worst drink I have ever had in a Chinese restaurant. So lacking of booze you could have ordered pineapple juice and saved $4. Peking Ravioli was lukewarm and awful tasting, so stale. Waitress kept complaining there was not enough room on the table for the food - 2 apps, 1 combo, 1 entre and edamame. The edamame was undercooked with no seasoning. Best General Tsao's I've ever had! The sauce has fantastic flavor. The chicken pieces seem high quality and were cooked perfectly. And instead of the two pieces of broccoli you typically get at other places, they add sliced carrots, green bell peppers, and a bit of crunchy cabbage (which actually pairs very nicely with it) The pork fried rice was really good too. I love their food - it's perfect American-Chinese food (and not too greasy). When I was in CT, I probably ate here weekly. I really miss it... It's never packed, so it's a great place to go with some friends, since you are guaranteed to be sat quickly. Their business seems to be predominately take-out, which is really fast as well. We've stopped in to Green Tea several times since my first review, and I am happy to report that a lot of the "three star" rating that I gave before was absolutely upgraded to "four star". Most recently we went in early on a Sunday for some Dim Sum plus. Let me start out by saying that we had three adults with an 8 year old and a 2 year old in tow, so we were not the world's easiest group! Our server was very polite, prompt, and kind! Any language barrier was made up for in his kind attention and smile. He got a child seat for our little one and even put down a nice generous sheet of butcher's paper on the floor so that we didn't have to worry about the baby making a huge mess. We appreciated that! We ordered about 7 different dim sum plates and four entrees as well. Among them were an excellent crab rangoon, a tasty seafood stuffed eggplant dish, plump and tender lotus buns, flavorful salt and pepper pork chop, two kinds of lo mein, curry beef, and a steamed dish off the diet menu. One of my major complaints about the food last time was that it was over-sauced but that was NOT the case this time. The beef curry was a perfect marriage of sauce, meat, and veggies. This place was a disaster. Granted we were getting takeout during the coronavirus crisis, but we waited an hour and 15 minutes for our food when we were told 20 minutes. It seemed as though I was bothering the staff just by showing up for my order. There were tons of people waiting inside and 2 people sitting at the bar? It seemed like no precautions were being taken. I was then asked twice what my order was when I ordered online. There was no apology for how long it took and just in genera a very unpleasant experience. read more
