First, I thought the food was fantastic. A little pricey, but very delicious and high quality. I would have given 5 stars had it not been for our server who was highly annoying. We got there at 5 pm on a Monday. Specials ended at 6 pm. We asked for details and she told us curtly the specials had ended in order to start prepping for dinner. Um, what? Your sign clearly states that it ends at 6 pm...She was very fake nice, smiling too hard and trying too hard to make small talk. Our whole party felt a bit uncomfortable when she was around. This was my first time in Florida and on my way to Key West I wanted to stop by The Green Turtle Inn after having seen it on Diners, Drive-In's and Dives. I tried the Turtle Chowder and Meatloaf that was reviewed on the show. It was exactly as great and delicious as the show said it would be! I love the food!! I even had their key lime pie as well and it was delicious too! But what made the trip very memorable was meeting Lucas our waiter (who came from Santa Clarita, California!) He gave me tips on what to do at Key West and what the scene was like in the Florida Keys. He even gave me more recommendations on other restaurants and places of interest! I had a great time being at the restaurant and I definitely will come back again for vacation or even when I decide to buy a vacation home here in the Keys! read more

Okay so we had an odd meal tonight. First off we judged a book by it's cover and expected this place to be a bit divey. Walk in and the place is super clean and very upscale. Wife orders the stone crab to start. The sauce was outstanding and the claw was super fresh. We both had salads. Each salad was excellent. I wanted Ribs but dan out waiter told me the prime rib was a better choice. It was great. Totally could have split it. The onion rings were outstanding. Wife decided she was going to have crab cakes. Told me they were the best she ever had. Then in an odd request after we had eaten we asked dan our waiter if we could try the tater tots that come with the steak. He said I will ask. He came back out with a batch of the finest tater tots ever made. They melted in your mouth and we told the chef they should be on the desert menu. What a meal if you are in the area you should eat here. Ask for dan as your server and make sure you ask for the tots with your meal. Had dinner here one night this week and food was amazing! You HAVE to order the lobster mac and cheese as an appetizer or a side to your entree. My entree was amazing (mahi mahi cooked a la Roxie) and the Caesar salad was delish!!!! I have to say - the outside of the restaurant does not do it any justice....so if you can get past the neon moving turtle sign you'll have one of the best meals you can in the keys.... Because of our awesome dining experience here in Fall 2011, we came back without hesitation in April 2013; in fact, we ate lunch and dinner on the same day. On our lunch visit, the food was pretty good and the service was very good. I ordered the eggs benedict with their hash brown casserole. My better half ordered a burger and he was pleased. The Bloody Mary's were delicious and stout. On our dinner visit, I was blown away at how bad my meal was and the change in service compared to our lunch visit earlier that day and to our visit the year-and-a half before. I ordered one of the specials, a lobster tail stuffed with crabmeat and chorizo. Yum, it sounded lovely. Ewww! the lobster meat was soggy, floppy, and tasted of brine. The flavor of the stuffing was good, but looked like it had been mixed all to hell and smashed into the tail without care. For $32 I expected a meal of higher quality. The service? I think we had service. We didn't see her much, and when we did see her, she appeared rushed, distracted, and uninterested in our dining experience. Next time we're in Islamorada, we'll definitely be back for brunch. Dinner? probably not. By the way, there is now a small package store, next door to this restaurant, that is worth your checking out. read more

Went there for breakfast this morning and was extremely disappointed by how terrible the service was! Yes, they were busy but server completely ignored us. We had to ask her to please take our order after we had been sitting for 20min. Never refilled our coffees or checked on us. Waited a total of 45min before we got our food and it was COLD!!!! When we mentioned it to the server she said the food "had just come out" umm NO we watched our food sit on counter for a long period of time.... the manager did apologize at the end and gave us a discount. Dined here Friday afternoon before heading down to Key West. Lovely atmosphere, super cute and well laid out. We dined in the sunroom between the inside and the patio, very cute. Although both breakfast and lunch options were available, we opted for sandwiches and cocktails! Tuna Melt and Chicken Salad sandwiches were incredibly delicious! We ordered the berry mojito and a French martini. The French martini was pretty horrible, tasted like vodka and a splash of pineapple-- no hint of chambord or champagne. Chicken salad has walnuts, celery and grapes and came served on a nice thick Challah bread. The tuna melt had diced celery, melted cheese and yummy marble rye. The fries were a little too salty, the side salad was great! Had no room for dessert, but we were sure to purchase an adorable Green Turtle Inn mug on the way out. read more

The service is horrible, we waited 10 minutes before anyone came to the table. The $16 conch fritters were over cooked on the outside & undercooked on the inside. We would've sent them back if anyone had come to check on us, but no. The beet salad was off, like the beets were old, and the wedge salad was anything but. I know they can do better because if we had been sitting at the bar we would've been fawned & fussed over. I'm a local & ive eaten here before. 5/26: Actually I want to update my review properly. I was very irritated when I wrote the review originally. =Review is based on the host/hostess experience only... no regards they lost 4 patrons.. we did not sit down or had the food... we were basically treated rudely and we left= When we walked in we were greeted rudely by this gentleman who looked like a server while the hostess did not even acknoledge us. We said party of 4 and the guy didnt even looked around he literally snatch a chair from another party who was like wtf and try to sit us at a cramp table right next to the front door as in people can open the door and walk into your table but just had to walk around. They had several other tables open and I politely ask for one those tables three times saying since this table is slightly cramp and he said no without looking at the other tables saying oh you need 5 or more in your party to sit there. Kid me not if there was a wait and people in front of me or behind me then I understand but no... There was no one behind me or in front me and my party felt insulted. We looked at the hostess and she just walked away. It was like they treated us as if our patronage was not wanted so we said its ok we will go somewhere else and the guy had the nerve to say "ok good".... really? never had we been insulted.... We left and no one even came out to apologize. We ended up having brunch at New Heaven at key west and honestly we had no problems waiting there. The food was good and service excellent. I cant say much about here. They need to train their servers in proper customer service before we ever come back. read more

Both the restaurant and attached liqueur store are amazing. The restaurant is a little bit fancy so be prepared to dress 'fancy' for islamorada and actually put on shoes. The fish here is amazing and presented beautifully. Great service. When we went they had a live singer and added a nice ambiance to the place. Whoever the bartender was was hilarious too. The place seems to turn a little more local-centric party toward the late evening with a vibrant bar scene. So if you want to avoid that come and eat dinner earlier like around 8 PM. read more

The turtle chowder with pepper sherry was really good and we were stuffed after delicious shrimp and grits and beet salad with fresh caught grilled yellow tail. This is not a "cheap eat" but great flavors and good portions. Had to update the review and downgrade them from a 5 to 4 because of the key lime pie we ordered to go. Very disappointing flavor almost devoid of the tangy key lime that is its namesake. The crust was quite good, made with macadamia nuts, but the filling was bland. read more

Had a good lunch with friends at the Green Turtle Inn; I loved my conch sandwich but it would have been quite dry without that special mango mayo on the side. Again, we landed here based on reviews from fellow Yelpers. Since they have specific menu for different times of the day, we did not get to sample the Turtle stew (unfortunately). We went here for a late lunch, but the staff are good therefore good service. Though it is on the highway, there were lot of local guys who were catching up with colleagues / friends. I had a lobster panini for $20 and thought it was expensive, but when I actually got it, it was completely worth it. My husband had a burger which was good. Everything about Green Turtle Inn is awesome. We had a great waitress who went above and beyond. I have never had turtle before and was curious about the turtle soup... So she went and got us a small cup with two spoons for us to sample before ordering. Wow. Pretty awesome! We ordered a bowl of it to share and again she had it brought out in two cups so we could each have our own. Turtle soup is definitely hearty with a bit of a kick to it (spicy)- the dry sherry goes well with it and tones down the kick just right. BTW if you never had turtle before it is meaty- it really tastes like beef. We had a late lunch today so we ordered small plates. Both were so delicious. We split the scallops (two large ones in a yummy creamy sauce with vegetables) and the pork belly. That pork belly was absolutely heaven. It was crispy and smoky on the outside and perfect on the inside- the accompaniments were also superb- cornbread made to perfect as well as fennel with carrots. I mean just perfect. My husband had been here before and had raved about these two dishes- now I understand why! Even the water was deliciously refreshing (citrus infused). Even though we got the small plates, we left the restaurant happy with full bellies. If you are staying locally the Great Locations area guidebook has a 10% off coupon. The Green Turtle Inn is worth a stop on your way to or from Key West. We only stopped for lunch but each item we ordered was excellent. The fried conch was the best we had in the keys. If you're into alternative meats I highly recommend the turtle soup. For my taste the Inn had the best key lime pie. Until the Green Turtle pie I never understood the world's fascination with key lime. I understand now. On our visit the service was friendly but not particularly good. FYI it is on the highway and not on the water. Out the back your view is of the parking lot and in the front it is of the highway. And as everyone has mentioned it is spendy. Had a great lunch today at this landmark Islamorada institution since 1947 starting with the Turtle Chowder with Pepper Sherry on the side. Folks, this signature dish is way beyond the looking glass of most chowders, the deep and complex layers of flavor all but impossible to decipher and I have to say this is one of the most well put together soups I have ever eaten in my life. If I had only had this chowder my review would carry a 5-Star rating. The Pepper Sherry treatment is a bit of a mystery to me still, though, since when Rosie cautioned me that it contained habanero that I should go easy on it but when I added a dose to the Turtle Chowder nothing happened. Habanero is one of the more complex and beautifully flavored chiles and one of my personal favorites but this sherry was completely devoid of any pepper flavor whatsoever and no heat of any kind. I think this was a good concept but perhaps the folks there don't understand that the brown pepper in the bottle is old, the sherry has deactivated the pepper's qualities, and it's basically just sherry with a used pepper in it. Alcohol renders both flavor and SHU's nil after a very short time and I think they had just been adding more sherry to the bottle, using the same pepper over and over and the result is that it's mild enough to feed to a breastfed newborn without repercussion. The sherry does give the chowder a nice finish on the back end, though, and even without the heat the Turtle Chowder is one of the most stellar dishes I've ever had...at any price. The reason I know my statements above to be factual is that after trying three jolts into the stew I finally just poured a soup spoon full of the stuff and drank it and sure enough, it's just sherry. The second chowder you see in my photo is the Conch Chowder and while not as complex by light years as the Turtle Chowder it's still basically a run of the mill chowder with very little conch (same with the Turtle Chowder, less than a half teaspoon of meat in that one, but with flavor like that I wouldn't care if it were a bisque), and the Conch Chowder is extremely salty, out on the edge of too far gone, and I'm a salt lover. I'd lay off of this one. The fish sandwich is freshly caught flounder (they have fresh market fish daily and there are several choices; today's were wahoo, mahi and flounder) and they have 13 styles in which they will make your sandwich. The one in the photo is the "Father's Office" version as described below directly from the menu: "Fathers Office - Caramelized Onions/Blue Cheese/Hardwood Smoked Bacon" Menu here: http://www.greenturtlekeys.com/menus/breakfastlunch.html I could not find the blue cheese and the onions were not caramelized -- though they were sauteed very well and delicious - and only on half my sandwich. The bacon is good quality, no chemical taste like some have and the chips, though unsalted, are made in-restaurant and not greasy, good quality, salt-your-own. The pickle you see in the photo was inedible and that's the first time I've spat something into a napkin on the sly in a restaurant in a decade. Horrid taste and the rind of the pickle slice has to be cut with an axe. The takeaway here is the Turtle Chowder, made from Bahamian sea turtle, sustainable and heavily-regulated with regard to harvest, the recipe the product of years and years of trial and error resulting in absolute perfection in a deep, rich and complex chowder that still has me scratching my head trying to figure it out. The Turtle Chowder alone is worth the entire trip to the Keys. I highly recommend this restaurant, big time. Photo of actual meal attached.... read more

This place is noteably clean for a keys spot. Go for the lobster mac and cheese as the sauce has the pefect consistency. My only big dissapointment was that I wanted the bistro burger which is a specialty here but they were all out, in it's place I had the cuban sandwhich but it was nothing to write home about seeing as I myself am cuban so the sandwhich needs to impress before I pick up my pen. We came from Portland Oregon where key lime pie is literally neon green lime pudding in a pie crust... I know... yuck... so here we are. We wanted to try the best key lime pie. We did our research online to find the places that served the best. We picked 5 places. We drove through the keys trying different key lime pies. Well, this one was our favorite. The crust was unique and the macadamia nuts really added buttery notes to it. The filling was delicious, not overly acidic. 5 star pie and 5 star service.
