Let me start this review by saying that I'm a business owner (unrelated business) writing this on behalf of my fiancee and I know how detrimental negative Yelp reviews can be - far more hurtful to a business than positive ones are since most people discount the good ones as "fluff." So with that said, it is with slightly mixed feelings that I write this. I'm sad that a fellow business owner will likely be hurt by this but I also feel that I owe this to other conscientious and caring salon owners who may earn more business because of it. I've witnessed everything in the review below and I feel compelled to do what's right. Notwithstanding the numerous negative reviews re the customer service and scheduling issues that seem to plague the salon, my fiancee (like many others based on the other reviews) looked past the inexplicably cancelled appointments and the receptionist who seems to consider answering the phone during normal business hours as well as greeting the client upon entering as optional because the price for services is quite good and the stylists (especially Dallah and including the owner, Sam) do a really good job on her hair (blow outs, extensions, coloring, etc). Against her better judgment, my fiancee even referred GP a new extension client last week (despite all of the issues above) with the caveat that you may not get treated well every time (or at all) but you'll get good-looking extensions at a fair price. Giving new meaning to the old adage that no good deed goes unpunished (or maybe lending even more credence to "caveat emptor") everything changed tonight when Sam (apparently remotely monitoring all conversations on a video/audio feed) "fired" her because he heard her and me discussing our displeasure with the salon's scheduling (in fact, today's appointment disappeared from their books after she made it at her last appointment and she was only able to get in bc she - NOT the salon - called to confirm her own appointment on Thursday) and frequent disregard for customer service. She had learned her lesson about assuming booked appointments were actually confirmed when at her last appointment she was charged $40 for the salon having to same day express deliver her extensions because she hadn't prepaid for her hair when making the appointment - something that she had never done and had never been asked to do in the year and a half she was going to GP for extensions. When pressed, the salon admitted the policy had changed since her last appointment but nobody had told her so she didn't know she had to prepay for her hair. Everybody at the salon - stylist, receptionist, etc - said she had to take up the issue with Sam the owner directly. So that's what she did - or TRIED to do since Sam didn't answer a single email, vmail or text - and believe me, she was relentless in trying to reach him. Fast forward to tonight. When paying for her extension service tonight - and because Sam didn't feel it necessary to respond to my fiancee - we decided to withhold the $40 express delivery fee and suggested that if Sam had an issue with it, he could work it out with her directly. We said this to the stylist who was taking her payment and apparently Sam overheard her on his remote audio feed. Before we got back to the car, he had texted her saying she was no longer welcome at the salon bc we (he specifically called me out) complained to the stylist about how Sam treats his clients and how little accountability exists at GP. Well, at least we know his phone works which should be heartening to those who ignore this review and still frequent GP. To be clear, I write this review with a heavy heart bc I know it may effect a fellow business owner (even if he deserves it) but what's fair is fair. I feel even more for the rest of the GP employees since the drumbeat of negative Yelp reviews will eventually cost them income and maybe even a job. However, I hope it helps those unsuspecting consumers - or those that ignore Yelp reviews - from being mistreated, and I hope it helps other salon owners who value their clients. read more

Came in on a Saturday afternoon, and was helped by Richie. I must say it was my best hair experience ever! Richie is such a professional and talented stylist, the staff in general while I was there was really sweet. I've never felt so comfortable in letting just anybody taking control in changing my hair, but I left this place feeling extremely pleased with my new hair cut and color it was better then I imagined. HORRIBLE!!!! Terrible customer service.. I made an appointment on-line and even received a confirmation email. When I arrived for my appointment they told me I didn't have an appointment, and there was nothing they could do, even after I showed them my confirmation email. They didn't even apologize, the owner just walked away from me! I have been seeing Sam for my hair needs for more than four years. The work he does is art. And my head is no easy canvas! I have thin hair and the color is lifeless. He brings it back to life quickly, carefully and makes it so easy to style! I am low maintenance about my hair, so quick and easy is best and the way he cuts it makes it effortless to look good. Wow! I can't understand all the bad reviews... I first went to the salon on a whim, after seeing the advertisement for a 25 dollar blowout. I had my doubts given the low price, however, I was absolutely blown away (pun intended). I have had countless blowouts at an array of Chicago Salons, but this is by far the best. I have EXTREMELY thick curly hair, maybe enough hair for two adults. Dallah is able to blow out my hair without the assistance of a flat iron. I leave with hair full of volume and shine that last around 5 days without even having to touch it up. I have had 11 blowouts there since November if that gives you any idea of my satisfaction. I'm not "hair savvy" to know what works best with my hair for styling purposes, cut & color, but Sam did!!! Greatest Salon! I have spent the last 12 years going to a very expensive, fancy salon downtown. That is, until I found Sam Griffith. Sam is an amazing stylist. He now does my cut, color, highlights and Keratin treatments. I have also had all of the other stylists at Griffith Parc blow dry my hair on various occasions. They are all excellent. What a great find! I have long, thick hair and stumbled across Griffith Parc while I was in the neighborhood. They did me a solid and fit me in as they were closing and I've already been back with another appointment already booked. The blowouts are great and last quite a while. Julia and T both tamed my hair without a ton of product or the heat damage of the flat iron I'd normally use on myself. ***UPDATE 10/8*** THIS SALON OR SAM STILL HAS NOT CONTACTED ME. Something else to add to this review it that they clearly don't care about their customers or how they are portrayed online! This place did the worst job on my daughter's Brazilian Keratin! Sam Griffith, the owner actually did it or should I say did a horrible job at it. He rushed through the process because unbeknownst to her, it was the final day of his salon before he closed the doors to move down the street to a place called Gold and Braid, the poor place to get him! She shared with me that he seemed more focused on the move than satisfying his customers. My daughter's hair looks UNACCEPTABLE. It is puffy and the crown extremely bumpy. I have 3 daughters and alot of experience with this process!! She is a young 23 year old living on her own, paid for it after saving up and that was ALOT ALOT of money! I was the one who called his cell phone eventually since he instructed her to call if she had any problems but he never picked up nor returned messages. All conversations were relayed through the receptionist at his new place because he was too cowardly to get on the phone. At first Suzy, the receptionist came back with an offer from him to take 20% off her next visit. That wasn't feasible because there was no way she could wait until the next visit because her hair looked like she had never had it done plus why would she go back if she wasn't happy? Sam wouldn't even redo it after she paid over $325 and tipped him( even though he was the owner and it's really not necessary). After weeks of going back and forth and the only time I spoke to him directly, he PROMISED to give her half of the money back. After waiting another 3 weeks for the check, I once again tried and was told that because he closed his salon and moved elsewhere, he can't refund her! But he actually promised to refund her money while he was already working at the new salon! So I'm not sure what moving to a new salon has to do with anything? HE JUST RENEGED TOTALLY ON HIS AGREEMENT!Well guess what Sam, I'm going to let everyone know that you are at a new salon called Gold and Braid at 1945 N Damen Ave and never to go there because you don't stand behind your disappointing work, provide horrible customer service, and you are a LIAR! I'm going to make sure no one ever gets ripped off like my daughter did. If you want to save yourself a shitty hair job, a ton of money, avoid Sam Griffith and his new salon at all costs!! Really bad experience. There is a reason for the reviews. This is only my second review, but I felt very obligated to share my experience in the hopes it won't happen to you! Dahla called me the morning of and asked me to come earlier and I agreed. I had never met him before and the first thing he says is did you move your appointment back, you're late. I showed up at 4:15, my appointment was at 4:30. He didn't introduce himself or shake my hand. Had a horrible attitude. We talked about my hair for 10 minutes. I showed pictures and was specific. He goes you seem like someone who is particular so I want to get it right. I asked for a balagaye with my natural fading into a clean blonde. Instead he took one color and painted my entire head to my root. Then at the end reprimanded me that I didn't book a cut when I did and they he sloppily, very rudely chopped my hair. Not to mention, I had to make a call when he was washing my hair and he deliberately spray my phone. Words cannot express how bad this experience was. At the end he splashed on color with his hands saying he was brightening the ends. What I ended with was yellow/red hair. The other stylists at the salon agree with my observations. I was very professional, but all the while he was argumentative, never apologized and insisted it as my fault. Bottom line he is not good and his attitude makes him worse. The owner called me that night and I was impressed but then he tried to shove me off on his assistant and was non responsive. All in all I wouldn't go here again and will forewarn the hood. Beware!!! Dallah burned my head several times with the blow dryer, and pulled and ripped at my hair. I say this without exaggeration--I nearly cried from the pain. I left there with a migraine. Yeah, my hair is straight, but it was not worth the pain. The whole experience was just odd. They were whispering with one another, shooting each other looks. I wanted to have my hair done for my engagement pictures, so this was pretty important to me. The girl on the phone told me that the place closes at 2 so the last appointment I could make was 1:15 (it was on a Sunday) because the stylist was there by himself. So, I show up promptly at 1:10 and THE NO ONE IS THERE. As in the building was closed. Maybe the stylist was running late? But nope, I stood there for 15 minutes and had enough. Literally just left the salon and I had to get on here to review this place. I do NOT understand the low ratings or the negative comments about this place. This was my first time going here, and I was referred to come here by a few Shredders at shred415. I was greeted kindly when I walked in, and Richard washed my hair and even put a mask on my hair to help condition it. He was friendly and did a great scalp massage. Dallah was my stylist and frankly...HE WAS AWESOME. He asked what I was looking for, he came up with an idea and never..not ONCE did he come off as rude like people have posted. He was friendly and funny. And he was not abrasive or pulling too hard like others posted. Seriously not sure what people are talking about. He blew out my hair, trimmed my bangs AND threw in some curls for $25.00 and I left there looking fabulous. So for those of you that are looking for a great way to look fab in a short amount of time (seriously 30 minutes is how long it took me)...GET IN HERE QUICK. How do I give no stars? My experience - there was a Gilt City voucher for $185 for a Brazilian Blowout and before purchasing it, went in for a personal consultation to determine if this was a better option than the Coppola Keratin treatment which was also on special. By the recommendation of Sam and Christopher (stylist who is very nice, but keep reading as to the execution part), they said I "would love it". So, I thought, ok, great - let's go ahead and buy it. Also, upon their recommendation, I purchased it directly from them instead of buying it on Gilt City (stupid me as you'll see why later). Went in for the service two weeks later - everyone was really nice to me and the atmosphere was great; HOWEVER, I came in for a satisfactory service and not to find a place to hang out. So...they go through the process and once done, I can tell something is off, but I shrugged it off thinking it's because I need to wash my hair and then style it myself at home to feel like I could manage this treatment. That was NOT the case. The product didn't do ANYTHING additional over the existing keratin treatment I had. So, I called to speak with my stylist Christopher to see what we can do to fix this. Again, I paid $185 of my HARD EARNED money (and as much as I'd like to say I'm rich and could afford this, I can't) for this service and I wanted it to work which they essentially guaranteed it would upon the first consultation. Chris needed to see my hair, understandably, so I came in on a Tuesday afternoon for him to take a look and we scheduled it so that if he needed to fix it, he would have the time. UH...I went in and he agreed that the blowout didn't take. When I asked him if he could fix it today (which was why we had scheduled an actual appointment), he said he didn't have time to do that, but I could schedule another appointment and pay an EXTRA $100 for the service. Stupid me, I agreed since I really need my hair to be ready for the summer. While I was there, however, I decided to ask if he would color my hair and he said yes, he could but someone else would have to blow dry it. Sounds good to me, figured I wouldn't waste the afternoon off work for nothing and he colored my hair. Looked great the first week, but then upon first wash (btw, I use the Keratin smooth sulfate free gentle hair shampoo & conditioner which he said was good to use with the blowout and I know is good for color treated hair), the color started to fade. Now, a little over two weeks later, the color is pretty much gone and the previous highlights I had are now peeking through again. What?! Those highlights were colored over with a dark color in February, so what type of color was used that would strip the previous color?! So, another $60 down the drain.... Anyway, I'd been trying to call Sam now for a week to discuss refund options. He was traveling last week, so I knew I had to wait. BUT, really, I called again 3 times this week and just NOW get a call back. Ok, great. Here's the kicker - Sam is not a good business person and he doesn't care about clients. I explained the situation as calmly as I could (until he really pushed my buttons toward the end of our conversation). I have NEVER been to a salon where their company policy is to not refund the client for an UNSATISFACTORY service. I have been getting my hair professionally done for over 10 years and have never been regarded so poorly over the phone. Instead of refunding me the full $185 (knowing they wanted to charge $100 for the follow up service), I even offered to just take $85 of the original $185 I paid for the Brazilian blowout. I didn't even mention the $60 for the color service until the very end because my main concern was the AWFUL Brazilian blowout service. How could a business owner feasibly expect someone to spend their hard earned money on something that just didn't work (even after multiple questions regarding the process). Oh, no, they said I "would love it"...to be fair, they did say I would love it even more after another treatment, but if you can't guarantee that the FIRST treatment will make any sort of difference, why would I try you again?! I am honestly in shock that they would charge me an additional fee to fix the original service. If they fixed it for free, I would not be complaining at all and in fact, would probably say, wow, what a great salon who stand behind their products and services and ensure the client's satisfaction. If that's what you're looking for, Griffith Parc Salon is not the place for you. What a scam. By the way, Sam - per your "business and profession", you're wrong about there not being a Brazillian keratin treatment. I bought a package because at $120 for 6 blow drys because, why not?! I once got Dallah and that was awesome. The other 5 times were AWFUL. I had pictures of what I wanted and the women literally fought me on what I wanted. Hear me say I was only asking for loose curls. They always said it needs to be tight because it'll fall. Having tried this service 3 times for important events, I've left CRYING and ran home or to a friends house to see if I had time before the event to fix it! I think I used up the package now, but it's definitely worth the extra drive and extra $15 to go to dry bar in Lincoln park. I had high hopes for this place! So disappointed. read more

It was the most abrasive experience I have had- Literally felt like I was going to be left with no hair the way he pulled it- My body was literally coming off the chair. And the hair dryer was smoking- Had to tell him to decrease the heat. My hair was straight- but with so many split ends from the 2 blowouts, I would never let him do it again. The price is right- and I am not one to need small chat- so may try another stylist- but my hair would not survive another blowout I am afraid (not to mention my scalp) from Dallah. read more

I had a pretty terrible experience here. The only reason why i gave 2 stars, is because the brazillian blowout treatment they gave me did work very well, and they didn't give me any trouble about my Gilt City voucher, but this place does NOT care about customer service at all. Here's what happened: - I show up for my appt at 11 and because this place is hard to get to, took a cab so I wouldn't be late - It's a tiny hole in the wall, not a very well decorated salon, but I dont let that get to me and they tell me that my stylist will just be 10 minutes and to wait in the back. - I sit at this uncomfortable chair in the back waiting for 45 MINUTES. It is now 11:45. I had to ask the stylists there if they knew what happened (no one came up to me, they didn't acknowledge me at all until I got up, and stood right in front of them) , they kept saying "Oh, just another few minutes" and then "oh, he went out for a color run, he should be back." - 45 minutes later, my stylists strolls in. No sense of urgency. No apology whatsoever. Didn't even introduce himself. When I say my appt was at 11, he just shrugs and says, well do you still want it? Since I had already put in my voucher, and did NOT trust this place (the stylists were really rude when I asked where my stylist was) I said fine. - He proceeds to essentially rip my hair out. Usually I love going to a salon and having someone wash your hair, it's like a head massage and really nice. This was terrible. I was in pain the entire time. i could feel my hair breaking from how rough this was - Same thing with the combing, blow dry, EVERYTHING. Super painful. Stylist was dead silent the entire time. It was like torture. - Finally it was over but I could see all the breakage in my hair. The treatment worked well (my hair dries straight now) but I dont think i will ever come back to this place. The customer service here is DESPICABLE. I took off work to get my hair keratin treated...Griffith parc called me to confirm the appointment 3 times, including the morning of the appointment! Then 10 minutes later after confirming, I get a call from a number saying "Sam had a cancelation can you come any earlier?" I couldnt and they said okay. Then another phone call "Actually we have to cancel your keratin appointment because we are out of the keratin product we need for the appointment ....." ARE YOU KIDDING? I asked to speak to Sam the owner and you would think he would apologize graciously, who books appointments when you're out of the product? 7 hours go by, no phone call back or word from Sam and he leaves for the day without calling. Clearly at Griffith Parc clients are not a priority! There is a reason this place is the cheapest around because so is their customer service and respect for their clients. read more

My (2) experiences have been nothing short of amazing. My first time going here & meeting the owner, Sam and his entire staff was great. So friendly, I drank wine with them and chatted like long-time friends and got a beautiful blow-out/style. 1 week later, I went back for the Brazillian Blowout. IT CHANGED MY LIFE. I have thick/ fine/ frizzy hair. It doesn't matter if I straighten it or not, the slightest bit of humidity - it curls, frizzes & is HUGE. I have never been able to just get out of the shower and let it air dry- it will frizz up, kink and be a disaster. I seriously plan my schedule around my hair; when I can wash it, what days I have to wear it up, what is the weather going to be like, etc. So Tuesday night I got this Brazillian from Sam and the next day I took a shower, put NO product in and just let my hair air-dry to see if this was the real deal. Well- it is. It dried with NO frizz, no fly-aways by my roots, and even had a very slight, SOFT, beach wave. I cried. Legitimately cried. The next day I then woke up, showered and blow dried my hair with my FINGERS, not a round brush, and it was styled and done in 7 minutes. My life has forever changed and I can only thank Griffith Parc. I am also forever indebted to them, because now every 4 months I am going to go broke (but it's so worth it!!) Super disappointed in this salon. I was traveling in from out of town for a wedding and was suggested this salon by the bride so I wouldn't have to worry about styling my hair. (Awesome, right?) When I called they said their last appointments were 3:15 on Saturday's, so I booked it. That was perfect for the 5 o'clock wedding. Day of comes around and it was right around the corner from where I was staying so I decided to walk when I realized I had a voicemail. By the time I called back/arrived at the salon at 3:14 they told me my appointment was at 3 and they had to cancel because I was late. Now I understand time is money, and businesses have rules to adhere to But this was a simple communication error that easily could've been on either party. What upset me was they told me if I had arrived by 3:10 they could've done my blow out. 4 minutes sooner? When I had called only 2/3 minutes after 3:10. They couldn't have held the spot? Worse yet, they told me all of their stylists were now busy so they had no choice but to cancel the blowout however, they could still dry style my hair. So someone was a available to style but not wash and style? I've never wrote a yelp review before but I was so disappointed. Not pleased at all. I have never had a blowout before and never will again. I got a lazy wash with hardly any lather. Had I not gotten it curled, it would have looked terrible, no style at all when drying it like normal salons do. The curl was pathetic and I had straight pieces everywhere. They put no product in my hair before or after the dry and didn't even offer. Thanks, I'll have to go home and re-style. read more
