Delicious Afghan delights including huge portions of kabobs and tasty shawarma. My boyfriend and I stopped by after a day of wandering the nearby environs, and we were starving for some good, flavorful eats. Grill Kabob didn't disappoint with their Chicken Shawarma sandwich or their Chicken/Beef Kabob plate. Both items were huge! The plate is definitely enough to feed two people. The Shawarma sandwich was a pita stuffed with plenty of chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions (heads up to those who dislike raw onions) for only $6.99. The Chicken/Beef plate came with the two types of meat, two types of rice, a small salad, bread, and a side of your choice (we chose the okra, which was savory, spicy, and delicious) for only $10.99. We drizzled plenty of white sauce (similar to tzatziki sauce) and their green sauce (slightly tart). I was slightly partial to the chicken/beef plate, but both were great overall. Hot tea is complimentary! Grill Kabob Express doesn't have any waiter service (you order at the front, seat yourself, and bus your own tables), and there may be a bit of a language barrier based on who's working. Overall, a great find in the suburbs and if we're ever back in the area, would love to try more of their foods since they have over 20 different options! read more

I was pretty happy with my meal here and will definitely be coming back. Every order is made fresh! I decided to go with Combo 1, the lamb kebabs. It came with brown and white seasoned basmati rice, a small salad, a very large piece of fresh flatbread, and my choice of a side between spinach, chickpeas, and potatoes with peas (I chose the spinach). It's a LOT of food! It was enough for lunch and dinner for me! Now, my first bite of the lamb was a little disappointing. It was pretty chewy as opposed to being tender. But after that first piece, the rest of the kebab was heavenly. Maybe placement on the grill was a factor? Anyway, I was incredibly satisfied with everything else. The spinach was flavorful, the flatbread was light and fluffy while still being crisp, and both rices were good. The key here is to get extra of that yogurt dill sauce! I was dippin' a plenty! Their green cilantro sauce was good too, but MMMM the yogurt dill! I'm glad I took other Yelpers' advice in asking for a second serving of it before heading out with my to-go order! I had been craving a good gyro for some time now, and as always, I decided to turn to Yelp to guide me towards the light. When Grill Kabob Express came up, I was a bit skeptical. Not only was "Kabob" is the name of the place, but also, if you dig a little deeper and peruse the menu, the gyro is the only non-kabob (with the exception of the chicken kabob sandwich) item for an entree. I read a few of the reviews on here about the gyro, and all of them were solid, some even accompanied by mouthwatering pictures. This is it, I told myself, my craving will finally be sufficed! I was not disappointed in the least; in fact, I was quite impressed and pleased with myself. The pleased with myself part is because I got lost and almost ended up at Shish Kabob Express. Just a helpful hint: Grill Kabob Express is in the plaza next to the Wal-Mart with "Pho Today" on the corner. Google maps, as it often does, led me astray, and I wound up in the plaza with the Navy federal Credit Union. Go past Lowes and then it is on the left, across the street. Now, back to Grill Kabob Express. When I walked in, there was one customer ordering in front of me and about 4-5 tables already seated. I would have placed my order online, but online it said a $10 credit card minimum, however, when I arrived, I saw the sign on the register indicating a $5 minimum. Now I know for in the future. The woman at the front that took my order was very pleasant. She called my number when it was ready and handed me two bottles of sauce (a green sauce that was a tad to tart for me and a white sauce, similar to a thin tzatziki) in addition to my gyro, which had tzatziki on the side. The food took longer than I would have expected it to, but oh was it ever worth it! The tzatziki was extremely thick and tasty, the bread was chewy and crisp-perfectly cooked and not soggy, the meat was tender and flavorful, even the tomatoes and lettuce tasted fresh. The gyro was priced at around $7 and was huge, so much so that I had to leave behind about 1/4 of the bread in order to consume all the meaty goodness inside. This was 100% the best gyro I have had in at least 3-4 months! They also run several kabob lunch specials for $6.99-kabob, rice, salad, plus a side and a drink. There were a steady stream of customers coming in and out during my time there, so I think the popularity at lunchtime speaks to the quality of the food (and I noticed everyone else around me had kabob). I ordered the number 4 which is beef and chicken for $9.99. It came with 2 different type of rice, salad, bread, and a side dish. The side dish I picked was the chick peas and I love it yay! it tastes especially good with the bread! They also include 2 bottles of sauces with your meal; a green sauce and a white sauce. I am not quite what these sauces are called, but it sure tastes like heaven when it is drizzled or dipped with the meat, rice, or salad! Not impressed! The first impression when you walk in the door is that the place is not real clean, but the reviews were good so I decided to stay and give it a try. The guy taking my order was not very pleasant, in fact a little on the rude side. But again, decided to push through! The soda machine was not working and looked like it had not worked in years. I was only 1 of 3 people in the restaurant but when my food was ready the rude guy said it was ready and I could come to the counter and pick it up. Seriously, he could not take the time to bring my food out to my table! I had the fish kabobs (really salmon kabobs) which were actually pretty good. Got 4 pieces of fish and lots of rice. Conclusion: Although the food was good there are many other kabob places in the area that also serve good kabobs. We probably order from here at least once a month! Also, if we are having people over last minute, this is our GO-TO! We also live 5 min away. We almost always get their platter for 3 or 4. It comes with ground chicken and beef skewers as well as grilled chicken and grilled lamb skewers. They put in two kinds of rice... which are both awesome, however we love to upgrade the rice to this one they make with raisins and carrots on top. OH MY GOODNESS, it melts in your mouth. So so so so SO delicious. The bread is a hit or miss... I've gotten the bread where it's way too crispy and I can't use it to make my little kabob tacos, but I've also gotten it where it's so fluffy and fresh. Just check when you get it. They are generous with the sauces, so don't be shy to ask for more. The dessert they have... a white yogurt with pistachios... SO refreshing! The perfect end to a meal. Visited this place with a buddy of mine for lunch. The dining area is open but cluttered I saw boxes and boxes of sodas and coolers and other things stacked up not organized in the hallway. The cleanliness was not there even in the restrooms. I ordered the boneless chicken kabobs which came with rice bread and chic peas. My buddy ordered the steak chunks kabob that came with the same thing rice bread and chic peas. My plate was $14.99 and my buddies was $15.99 pretty over priced compared to the surrounding kabob places in the area. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and taste of the food my chicken kabob were the issshhhh! They serve your food with a big bottle of the white sauce which if you are a regular at kabob places you will know they charge you extra for the sauce. I guess with the high prices they can afford to give u unlimited sauce. My buddy was not as lucky with his steal chunks kabobs. The steak did not taste good it was dry and did not taste fresh. I had a piece of his and I agree it was not good at all. There lunch menu is good and cheap. You can get a $6.99 deal for 1 skewer of kabob with salad and rice. It is cheaper than any other kabob joint in DMV. There kabobs are very good. I ordered aashaq today and it was more of a mantu. If your Afghan then you know aashaq is boiled and not steamed. I was disappointed that it was steamed like it defeated the purpose of it being aashaq. Also you don't serve aashaq with a veggie topping it's supposed to be meat. So only order kabobs from here. The restaurant opens at 11, but when I tried to place a take out order at around 11:15-11:30, the man answering the phone said they were not taking orders yet. This place has completely gone downhill with the change of ownership. In the past the kabob was never dry, the side dishes were flavorful, and the rice was always perfectly fluffy. Stopped in for a seriously late lunch and was the only customer in the place, but I pressed on and ordered a gyro sandwich for take out. It was taking a while to make (absolutely no complaints from me on this) and as I was super hungry, I added an order of Sambosas to my meal. This place has the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I had been there a few times because it's right by my house and I usually get the order to go, but this last time was the last time I'll ever support this business again. I went with my wife for dinner and we ordered our food (gyro and a kabob platter) and then proceeded to wait OVER 45 MINS. During this time, several other families came in and ordered and had their food way before we did - obviously because they were friends with the owner because they were greeted and laughed and joked and asked about families and stuff. I went back and patiently waited. 10 more minutes goes by and another family of 6 that came in after us is served and I went back up to ask again - his buddy comes out and THEY START TALKING SH#% ABOUT ME IN FARSI TO EACH OTHER while I'm standing right there. I'm Afghan and also speak Farsi and ask them how the FU%# can they be so bold and blatantly rude and he tells me you have to be patient and the food is coming. First off, waiting 55 minutes for fast food kabob is beyond patient, secondly, there was no apology for their abhorrent behavior, they tried to push the blame on me and that 'their computer' was down (I assume he meant their cash register since I doubt that buffoon can use a computer). Everything I have had here was phenomenal, the chicken and beef kobidah kabobs are really good but my favorite is the boneless chicken kabob. This place is serving up some of the most delicious, awe-inspiring, mouth-watering, grilled kabobs and the most delicious and savory taziki sauce this side of Kabul (and with far fewer IEDs mixed in). This kabob is worth fighting for. It's worth driving to Fairfax for, and it's damn sure is worth paying the $10 it costs to get a lamb and chicken kabob, delicious jasmine rice, naan, and a steaming bowl of whatever side you choose. I am impressed with the food and the place is clean, staff is friendly, and they had that green-eyed Afghan girl's (Sharbat Gula) picture from National Geographic on the wall, so you know it's authentic. This place was so good!!! The people who work there are kind and friendly and the food is amazing. Super quick and delicious Afgan food. We ordered for pick up and all together had the Chicken/Beef Kobidah, Lamb/Chicken kabob, and Qabeli Palaw. All of them were delicious, including the two types of rice that come with the kabob dishes! The sauces were a nice surprise, especially for someone who isn't seasoned in Afgan cuisine. It's reminiscent of the green and white sauces you get for Peruvian Chicken! (Only bc of color, the flavors are much better in my opinion!) The Baaklava was AMAAAAAZZIIINNGGGG!! Definitely get some with your order!! Food was 5 stars! Service was 4.5, only because they forgot one of our meals (we ordered two of the Qabeli Palaw and got one) but when we returned for the missing meal they were very apologetic and gave us a free Baaklava (which was amazing, so WORTH IT!!)
