While the food here is always great, there are times when the service just isn't. But that's all I'll say, so as not to dwell or name names. The Reuben is ridiculous. It has jalapeño kraut on it. The pastrami is fantastic, too. The tater tots are worth the calories. On the weekends, there are $5 bloody marys. The BLT is nothing short of fantastic. Grinders West aims for delicious food for when you're really hungry. They have a better beer selection than most, and the bar next door, with a pared down menu of pizza, calzones, and bar food is open LATE. Can't complain. The evening service could be a little happier and quicker, but we'll still be back! read more

Grinders West is like the more family friendly version of Grinders. No one writes on the walls in Grinders West, but it's still artsy and funky. The tables are all essentially shallow boxes with glass tops that they allow artists to fill/design, and they change periodically. Grinders West also has TVs, which makes it a nice place to watch sports, but enjoy something other than typical bar food. The service at Grinders West is more attentive and nicer than at Grinders (with a few exceptions -- Grinders does have a few good servers). It's still going to be a girl whose real hair color is a mystery, and perhaps has piercings other than her ears, but she's not going to slam your food on the table, or treat you like a moron when you ask for a beer they are out of. In fact, at Grinders West, you might get cups with a little taste of two other IPAs you might like since they were out of Racer 5 that day. Grinders West serves soup, salad and sandwiches, but you can also order anything from the Grinders side, thanks to a pass-through window cut in the wall between the two restaurants. My typical order is the pear salad and an Ace Perry Cider (The cider is from the Grinders side). The pear salad is baby greens, crumbled gorgonzola, candied walnuts, dried cranberries and sliced pear tossed with a tart dressing and then drizzled with a balsamic reduction. It's just delicious. I also really like their cobb salad. I ate that last summer during the Split Lip Rayfield set of the Reverend Horton Heat show. And then danced myself silly once the Rev came on. The roast beef sandwich is also good, my beau has ordered that several times, and I always marvel at the sheer deliciousness of sauteed onions on roast beef. Also, the pickle spear that comes with the sandwiches is unusually crisp and dill-y. Grinders West sells their meats and cheeses from a deli case, which adds another layer of awesomeness to the location. They also have their tasty potato salad in there for sale by the pound, among other things. I'd also like to mention that they do weekday specials, and also have an impressive wine selection. I only like very specific wines, but if you are more sophisticated than me, definitely check them out. When I was there most recently they were having a wine close out and offering bottles for $20. You also don't have to finish the whole bottle, they can apparently re-cork it and seal it up in such a way that you are allowed to take it with you. Pretty cool. I really, really wanted to love Grinders. I have heard all about it and how it is a wonderful place to eat. I went on a Friday night around 8 pm; there was a concert out back so we could not eat outside, but the door man told us we could eat inside, so we decided to stay. Grinders West was not at all crowded, so we were able to find a table for our party of 6 with little difficulty (that came when trying to get the food). The atmosphere is great...I love the art and the "art tables," I do not love the service. Our waitress started off well, getting us all waters and giving us time to look at the menu. She did not have a drink list, but pull a hand written list out of her order binder and gave that to us to look at--since there were new beers that we not on the chalk board menu posted on the wall (which we could not see from our table and was only discovered by someone in our party after we had ordered). The highlight was that Grinders will allow you to taste the beer before ordering it, so that was a ray of light in an otherwise cloudy visit; unfortunately, on event nights all beer is served in plastic cups...even when you are paying $5-7 (prices not posted) for 12 ounces:( After a significant wait, our drinks arrived and it was time to order food. I ordered the half turkey philly with everything. My companions ordered beef phillies, pizza and, oops, nothing, since the waitress left the table before getting everyone's order--that's right, one person in our group did not have their order taken (we were sitting and a longer table and the waitress stood at one end to take the order---she just left before she was done). When this was mentioned to another waitress, she said she would send her back, but she did not return for ~10 minutes. Other than this snafu, we also had to repeatedly request water---they were not super bus,y and other waitresses were circling with water, but did not come to our table and our waitress did not stop by with any regularity to check on us. The food was OK-- my sandwich was good, but there was an up-charge for some of the toppings, but it was not clear which ones (since it was not listed on the menu); I had onion, peppers, provolone, cheese whiz, jalapenos and banana peppers. The pizza some of my companions got was just ok as well; the wings were not as spicy as touted by the waitress. I can't believe this place has such good reviews. I've eaten here once, and will never be back. My party ordered Philly cheese steaks since they seem to be a highly rated item here. They were not good. They lacked flavor, the meat was dry and it took forever to receive our food. Anyone who has been to Philadelphia knows that a proper Philly can be cooked and assembled in about 3 minutes tops. I have honestly had better steak and cheese sandwiches from Subway. The fries were also horrible, soggy and gross. All of the portions were very small. On top of that, service was atrocious, and there seemed to be an additional charge for everything imaginable. I'm surprised the restroom wasn't pay per use. The atmosphere is piecemeal kitsch. Over it! Next time I'm craving a Philly in KC, you'll find me at Pepperjax. read more

Let me just start by saying that I'm a Grinders fan. I've been a Grinders fan for YEARS! We used to go every Sunday like a religion. I've told complete strangers that they need to try Grinders. Today, I am NOT a Grinders fan. In fact, I am so disgusted that I may never go again just based on today's experience. And it ONLY because of my Grinder's love affair in the past that I am not giving it 1 star today. First off, I ordered my lunch to go. I've done this numerous times, so this is no news. Second, they charged me for a to go container!!! You heard me. 50 cents was my thank you/punishment for choosing their establishment over oodles of others in the Crossroads area. This should be overhead and typical costs for running a business. Next they charged me $2.50 for substituting fries for chips with my BLT sandwich. I've done this before and a subbed side was a $1 upcharge. THAT I can understand, but $2.50?? And they were cold and lifeless!! The bread on my "toasted" BLT was soggy. And, the second half of my BLT only had about 40% coverage of the B, the L and the T. OVER IT!!! read more

I am so jealous of everyone who works close enough to Grinders/West to enjoy their food for lunch. Since I work in South Kansas City, rarely do I get to try the tastiness that Downtown and the Crossroads areas have to offer. Fortunately, I had an errand to run that way over my lunch break the other day, so I made the (wise) decision to try Grinders West. Grinders West is the younger, classier sister of the original Grinders (the tatted up rebellious one). I didn't have time to stay and dine in, so here's a review of my carry-out experience. I called ahead to order a half sandwich/half salad combo. Parking wasn't as bad as I was afraid it was going to be. There is a gravel lot across the street that provides enough parking for a busy lunch crowd. When I walked up to the register, I was greeted promptly, was taken care of quickly, and was out the door in no time. My half California BLT was deeeelish! The bacon on the BLT was some of the best bacon I've ever had. It wasn't overly salty and actually had a bit of meat to it. It was as sweet as it was salty -- perfect combo. My pear salad was just as delicious -- very likely to be my favorite salad. The "stankiness" of the gorgonzola cheese paired nicely with the tartness of the craisins and the subtle sweetness of the pears. With the added sweet crunchiness of the candied pecans, the salad couldn't have been more perfect -- all finished off with a divine champagne vinaigrette. They serve the dressing on the side in a ramekin so your food travels safely with you to your final destination. I should also point out that they have a very informative and user-friendly website. I think restaurants are starting to realize that most diners nowadays will likely preview a place before going out, so having a functioning website is key. read more

I ordered off the Grinders West menu for the first time as we. Their sandwich menu was calling my name. I had the California BLT. It was superb. My friend and I came here on a Thursday night about 8:30 pm after a Yelp Party downtown. We had talked too much and not eaten enough so we were HUNGRY! No drinks for us. Just water and FOOD! Wow. There are lit half-globes on the wall to the bathroom. And after reading some other reviews, I wish that I had gone to the bathroom. Evidently, the bathrooms are artsy also. So, I planned to get a grinder, until I found out they had a sandwich/salad combo and they have a BLT!!!!! I love me some BLT. The California BLT has a soft wheat berry bread, thick sweet bacon, a nice amount of tomatoes and fresh lettuce. It was a-mazing. I paired that with the spinach salad with strawberries, goat cheese, pecans and raspberry vinaigrette dressing. Double amazing! Everything was fresh and yummy. My friend ordered the Philly Cheese Steak - with provolone - not the authentic cheese whiz with a side of tots. She said her sandwich was great. The aforementioned items drew me in for quick lunch on a Friday afternoon last week. Unfortunately, I was in for a looooooooooooooooooonnggg ride. After finding a table outside, I was hard pressed to find something I didn't want to eat on the menu. It all looked amazing. Hot wings, chili cheese tater tot pizza, Philly cheese steak sandwiches - a girl could fall in love! However, I waited and waited and waited for my order to be taken, a drink, a scrap of food to be thrown my way...anything. One hour later, my lunch was finally brought out. I couldn't go to a place called Grinders and not order a grinder. Needless to say, it was delicious. Melty mozzarella cheese, red sauce and big ol' Italian meatballs make up this sandwich. I dare you to take this thing head on - no side bites. You will be covered in meaty, saucy goodness. The Curried Chicken Sandwich was also good and contained large hunks of white chicken, grapes, walnuts and celery on ciabatta bread. I have actually eaten at Grinders before but it was after seeing a DDD episode and didn't have a great experience. This visit was for a holiday party on a Friday afternoon. One of the participants arrived early to grab the only long table in the place!! We had multiple appetizers. Ragoons, hummus, and Big Ass Fries. Lot's of beer - which is a huge selection - except for what I wanted!! (Rolling Rock). Still trying to keep it light but I decided not to be ww conscious on this meal! I had the pizza of the day and the slice was HUGE. Many of my co workers had the meatball grinder or the Philly cheese steak. There was not a complaint amongst them! The waitress was awesome. She dealt with the fact that our table of 10 came and went at all times during our 4 hours there! I look forward to going back and trying more menu items! On a side note, the owner of the restaurant, Stretch, had been in Chicago the same week I visited the KC Grinders. He was part of a group of chefs going to military bases and cooking for our troops. Although the categories for this restaurant say "chicken wings, pizza and sandwiches", with the addition of the Grinders West menu to both sides (Grinders serves the same menu), there are a lot more options for the discerning palate to choose from. The famous Philly is available in a veggie version, but The Veggie sandwich (grilled portobello, zucchini, peppers and a delicious garlic aioli) is one of the best sandwiches on the menu. The pizza is excellent - I'd recommend ordering a whole pizza as individual slices can be hit or miss. The Fun Gi (mushroom pizza with white sauce) is a strong contender for best pizza in KC. Beyond that, there are some great salad options above and beyond standard house/caesar offerings. Besides solid food offerings, the tap/bottle selection is one of the better ones in Kansas City, and with a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar on Sundays, it's a great spot any day of the week. read more

I want to give this place 3.5 stars. The food is pretty good. There is a good selection of various sandwiches and salads, as well as build your own options for both. They also feature 3 soups along with a couple daily soups that change. It's rather cold out today, so I was hoping to get soup and a sandwich. I was completely cock blocked by the waitress though, who insisted that your sandwich side cannot be soup, despite a cup of soup costing less than some of the sides you can choose from to go with your sandwich. I could have gotten half a sandwich and soup, but I'm fat and wanted the whole sandwich. The tables are interesting...glass tops with something interesting going on under them. Our table had a bunch of ears or corn with faces on them. I did not explore the alcohol options, and the glasses they give you are annoying little half-glasses. Three of us had water and our waitress had to make several laps with a pitcher to make refills. If you order a soft drink, it will come in a can with a half-glass of ice. Good food. A little higher priced on some items than I would expect, but the food was pretty good. I ordered the Philly Cheese Steak, and it was pretty close to the real thing. There was less grease than the original. They have a wing challenge if your up for it. If I remember they have four levels of hotness and the Molten is the 2nd lowest and I think that was just perfect for my taste. I want to be able to enjoy by food not loose all my taste buds. But if hot is your thing have at it!!! OMG the bacon, some people I went with didn't eat their bacon that was on their burger so I had the priveledge of eating it, and boy was it delightful probably the best thing I ate. This is the first time I have ever written a poor review. I am a huge fan of the original grinders. Everything about that place is great from the food to the beer selection to the service. I also don't pull the "I'm a server" card but I just did. The service was terrible. She didn't know what the tea selection was available, she brought out one plate out of six 25minutes before the rest and forogt two items on plates once they came out. I understand it's The kitchens responsibility to plate things properly but if it's overlooked, the server should correct it. Once everything came out it was cold. A satisfying amount of lunch on 1/2 a sandwich and small salad. "Porn table"? It's more stupid dirty humor than anything. So I decided I have to review the two Grinderses separately. Because even though you can always order off both menus, their vibes are so incredibly different. And I have to admit I love love love Grinders West. First off, you walk in, and below the glass are various and constantly changing displays, from Adam and Eve (full on awesome) to a jagillion (likely not 10,000) paper cranes, my personal favorite. Secondly, you have an awesome beer selection, as you can get anything from the other side. And everyone who works there actually knows what she's talking about beer-wise. I sometimes hesitate to ask for recommendations, but not at Grinder's. Then we have the specials, which include both food and drink, and usually sound pretty amazing. And let's face it, they have a night of super cheap tacos and Mexican beer- my Austin self is totally pleased. But my New York self is even more pleased. Because when you order roast beef at Grinders, you are going to get a pile of pinky-red meat, stacked up high and delicious. One of the specials I've had involved bleu cheese and tomato, and it was one of the most delicious things I've eaten lately, especially when paired (compliments to our waitress for the rec, once again) with a coffee stout. The next time, we sat outside, and I gave in to my NY instincts and ordered the pastrami. Let me just admit here that I don't know what pastrami that isn't pastrami even comes from, and I don't want to know. I'm better off not knowing, so that I can return and enjoy this with all its mustardy, rye bread goodness. I have heard great things about the roasted chicken, as well. And their sides are pretty delicious. The olive salad is exactly what it sounds like, but for a lady who wants the amount of olive juice in her dirty martinis to outdo the vodka, it made me pretty happy. And the jicama slaw is good but not the most exciting. Texans still have a hold on the way to make jicama taste like something more than nothing. Mostly, I haven't had sandwiches like this since I left NY. The meat tastes, well, like actual meat. They stack it up high and slather the bread with mustard, cheesey goodness, mayo, with delightful abandon. The bread itself is worth the trip downtown from Westport, and we actually asked where they get it. I could have that rye bread anyday. So despite my attempts to be newly fiscally responsible and well-behaved and make my own sandwiches at home, Grinder's West wins. And hey, at this point, I'm down for anywhere that doesn't feel like it's KC. And this doesn't. PS The bathrooms are adorable. Just a side note, as that doesn't really affect the experience. OK....so I've been to the East, and to the West.....having come from South Jersey...well this IS where I go for a cheese steak. And guido, and meatball, and crab rangoon, and the foos ice cream...but I digress. Seriously, I know what a cheese steak should taste like, how it should feel in one's mouth. And you know, they do it right. I have tried the other cheese steaks in the area, especially after all of the advertisements--and still--it's Grinder's. To those who complain about slow service--yes, we had rhythm in NJ--a flow, speed--but let me say, when going into a restaurant, we also knew (and still know) what we wanted or needed. Grinder's is almost always busy, and perhaps in NJ style one should take the initiative to ask for what one wants.....When I come in, they know me, I say hello, and already they have an idea of what I am going to order. There are those who are new to the Grinder's experience--to the ones who sit and wait an hour...well..that is the exception and not the rule. Coming from the East Coast, if that were the case, politely go and ask for something--don't just sit there with your thumb up your Midwestern ass. ASK! Some people like to be waited on hand and foot--I don't go in being needy. I go in with a purpose--I enter with a smile and leave with a smile. To me, the food is excellent and service is quite good and friendly. Moral of the story--you never really can form a valid opinion with one visit. I know that there are some who seem distant at first, but do you know if they are busy, had a bad day, or perhaps another customer like you, pissed them off--hard to say. Give the benefit of the doubt. As for me, I have not had any problems, and I can say that Katie O. takes care of her customers in an edgy, fun, and yet, professional manner. There are no false pretenses here--no fake, wannabe atmosphere, not stuffy or arrogant--just people who work hard, care about their product, and who would like to see you again. The Pastrami sandwich was awesome and the fried goat cheese salad was awesome. I got the "pick 2" which ended up filling but not violating my stomach. The aesthetics of the place were cool and awesome, as was the staff. There is a gross table but it's not a "porn" table. I've been a patron of grinders since I moved to KC about five years ago. It's one of those places that you take out of towners because the menu is diverse, there is something for everyone. That ends today. I met up with some people for lunch this afternoon and ordered the fungi slice along with the smoked Gouda potato salad. That's exactly what I said, the Gouda potato salad. The waitress looked at me and says 'did you want the potato salad or the casserole?' Confused, because I was pretty sure I made no mention of the casserole since I had never even heard of it, I replied 'I'm not sure, I usually just get a small side of potato salad.' She then described the difference between the two to me like I was brain dead. I ended up restating that I wanted the potato salad. I dug in to my pizza when it arrived. 1/3 of the way up my fork snagged a hair. It happens, I removed it and went on. Take note: this resembled a head hair. About an inch up I ran into yet another hair. This one resembled a beard hair. Stiff and somewhat curly. So, that's different types of hair in my one slice of pizza. I stopped eating and when the waitress checked on out table I told her the situation. She had zero interest as she interrupted me by taking the pizza and immediately walking off giving me an insincere 'sorry 'bout that' on the way. She asked if I wanted anything else and I declined. She said 'ok' and briskly walked off. I was not charged for the pizza, but lacked the customer service skills to comp my side of potato salad that I did not eat after the hairs were found. Never a sincere apology, she could have cared less. The only reason this receiving two stars is for the food. Unfortunately, I'll never be able to have it again. Had I just been treated like a customer and not an inconvenience I would have returned eventually. * I am editing this review because apparently there is a potato salad and casserole and I'm too stupid to know the difference. It is not the waitresses fault for not politely correcting me, it's mine, for being a patron of this shit hole. I'm so sorry. I've had two employees harass and name call by messaging me. So my wife and I got a new Vespa and figured why not try a "Vespa" friendly eatery. And, while Grinders West is Vespa friendly, it's their food that is even better. If you've read my posts before you know that I've yelped about Succotash, and my fandom of their food, but lack of excitment for the atmosphere. Grinders is the perfect place to grab a casual breakfast. They have a $5 bloody mary bar that even comes with bacon flavored pickles as a choice. But it's their brown sugar glazed bacon that had us both in ahh... For the two of us to have breakfast the tab was only $14--no drinks. I suggest checking it out.
