We popped in here on our route from St. Louis to Denver and thanks to Yelp it was a success. A bar on one side and a restaurant/cafe on the other with a stage and large patio area out back, this place seems like it would be great on a Friday or Saturday night. The salads we ordered we perfect considering you can add your own ingredients and the beer menu seemed pretty extensive although we didn't imbibe. It would have been great to experiment with the food here a little more but if I ever return to KC I'll surely add this to my list of places to re-visit. read more

I had my first Grinders experience a couple of months ago during Sunday brunch. All I can say is that the Baja burger is delicious and I want more of it. The crinkle cut fries (which are extra, nothing here comes with a side) were subpar, but that's my only complaint. The service was just right, the decor is just loud enough to catch your eye and that level of hole in the wall that makes you feel comfortable, and my server (who was a male) wearing short shorts gave me just the laugh I needed early Sunday afternoon. read more

We've eaten here several times and never been disappointed. Oddly enough, for a place featured on the Food Network for over-the-top pizza, I adore their salads. They are each delicious but I especially like the fried goat cheese salad - very creative and all the different flavors work together even without the addition of the goat cheese (although I would still love more of it). The roasted chicken and california BLT are favorites for sandwiches; my husband enjoys the philly and grinder. The last time, we even had our kids with us. Even though it's not a typical kid-friendly restaurant, several of the appetizer choices worked well for them (the hummus with pita and carrots as well as the funky dough). Came into town late and and wanted to find somewhere with good food and drinks, decided to check it out and was not disappointed! Amazing food and drinks. We got there around 10:30pm on a Wednesday night, had crab ragoon app which were better than most Chinese places, crossroads pizza was a great choice, homemade crust was delicious, within walking distance of the Sheraton where we stayed. I must not be "hip" enough to receive mildly decent service, but even if I were, Grinders is one of the haughtiest restaurants I have been to in Kansas City. The scene is fine when purchasing food or drinks at the window outside Grinders *during a show*, however, the service inside (show or not) has been constantly neglectful. I ordered a pretzel tonight with the rest of my table ordering pizza. Server forgot to put in my order AND 5 minutes before bringing out food, server told me pretzels were not being served. Waitress error? Kitchen error? Not the first time, definitely the last time. I suppose I should grow a mustache and gain tattoos if id like good service. read more

Have been many times and the food was still good but that does not make up for the horrible services. Took to long to even be acknowledged then the waiter messed up a simple drink order for three. Once we received our drinks the waiter didn't return for 15 minutes. We then ordered our food, figuring everything would get better it did not. The food came out at different times and incorrect. First was the pork sliders, they were pretty good, then a calzone for one of other people in our party. The next item to come out was not the correct sandwich or sides, the waiter came to check 20 minutes later. We had also ordered a pizza and it never came. When the waiter came to check on us, 20 minutes later, I told him the sandwich was wrong and I still didn't have my pizza. Normally great food can make up for crappy service but the food was just okay and the service was pitiful. Luckily there are any other places in the area to eat. read more

I first took note of Grinders from an episode of DDD because I was proud to have a restaurant from my home state recognized. They showed a lot of crazy pizza concoctions. My taste buds aren't that adventurous, but I do love a good slice! There's a very "come as you are" attitude, which is always nice. My mom and I split a sausage, pepperoni, and goat cheese pizza which was delicious! My only complaint is that they didn't put enough goat cheese on it. The service was fine and we had a pleasant lunch. Also, you can never be too bored here because there's always something interesting to look at. read more

Their special was make your own mac and cheese, choose one meat and two veggies and my server raved about it and said they rarely had it as a special because it was so good. So I ordered it and chose pepperoni as my meat. I think they just waved it over my dish, the veggies only slightly more so. The mac and cheese itself was marginal. BEWARE FOOD ALLERGY SUFFERERS! I went to here during my lunch 4/15/16 with 2 co-workers. Had horrible service! The waitress didn't come check on us until we were ready to leave to see how we wanted to do our checks. I brought to her attention that I never got my food & neither had my co-worker (other than appetizers). I had noticed my & my co-workers food had been sitting in the window between the 2 sides at least 10 minutes. We asked for it to go since we had to get back to work. It was totally cold by now. (I did email them about this & was told they would refund my card, which 2 days later, I'm STILL waiting). That was bad enough, but the WORST part of this was my food. I had ordered a GLUTEN FREE pizza. I went so far to tell her that I have an actual WHEAT ALLERGY, so please make sure it's gluten free. Since they had boxed it up & I was already late getting back to work, I didn't look at it before leaving. Once I returned to work, I scarfed down a couple pieces as I wasn't supposed to be eating at my work station. ( Looking back now, I should have realized it probably wasn't GF, because the crust is usually thin. This crust was fluffier than typical GF crust). Within 2 hours, I noticed my hands and face were tingling and itching & my throat started getting tighter & tighter, causing a breathing problem. I went to the restroom & noticed my face was red & quickly swelling, so much so that my right eye was swollen half shut. I went to one of my co-workers whose a nurse & told her I was having reaction. I quickly grabbed my EPI pen & injected myself. I had to take several doses of albuterol to help with my breathing. Thank God I had them because I COULD HAVE DIED! After getting home, I had to continue taking benadryl to help with the itching I was having all over. I've also had to continue taking histamines all weekend to help get all the swelling down & help with itchy eyes. If you decide to go here & you have a food allergy, be sure to TRIPLE CHECK your food so you don't have an issue like I did. read more

The first visit to Grinders was because they graciously hosted a kick-off party for an American Diabetes Association event. The pizzas were thin and delicious and that was my "go-to" order each time I went back to Grinders. My first order on the non-pizza part of the menu was the original Philly and it was huge, flavorful and better than anything I ate in Philly...with the possible exception of one at a dive bar called Bert's (now closed). I chose a half sandwich and tater tots, which were crispy and hot. Yum! I recently had the roasted chicken sandwich. Oh my! Fresh mozzarella, pesto, spinach accompanied the chicken. Our waitress said it was her favorite sandwich and I wasn't disappointed either. I suppose I need to work my way through Grinder's entire menu - lucky me! The decor is interesting and perhaps "hip", though I'm probably too old to really know what falls into that definition. I've never been there when the place is extremely crowded and the waitstaff has been attentive and friendly. The wine selection is limited; however, the beer selection appears to be widely varied and includes seasonal brews. read more

We came with a group of 5 and it was a disaster. One order came out 15 minutes before any other order. The beer took 10 min to come out. The food took 45 min to come out and tasted extremely average. First visit was 3/11/12 with wife and son. Excited to see a decent selection of brews when we were seated! Took 10 minutes to have a waitress stop by our table. Drinks took 20 minutes after I reminded waitress. Next we got our fries and wings (apps) along with my Philly(entree). 5 minutes later my wife's salad arrived. 5 minutes after that my son's 2 slices showed up to the table. Food was delicious but service was terrible. But they were busy. So wife is out of town and I didn't feel like cooking. My son wanted to go to Grinders last night 3/21/12 and I wanted to give them a second chance. 30% of tables occupied. Drinks arrived fast. Order taken quickly. Wings and fries for apps(again), Philly and 2 slices for entrees(again). And here we go again! Fries and Philly come out first. Then wings 5 min later. Then slices 5 mins after that! So I ask for a manager. 10 minutes go by and no manager. Stop waitress and ask her where is the manager I requested. She informed me he is making pizzas and will be out soon. Ridiculous! Manager never apologized and said so the food just got mixed up? Yep buddy! AGAIN! He said pizza comes from the other side so it takes longer. I said I can understand but neither tonight or on 3/11 did the waitress point that out. Manager offered to buy me a beer. I declined. I want to love this place but now I can't. Bad service twice and a Manager that had to finish his pies 10 minutes before coming to my table. If you want some good food, a good beer selection, and can tolerate horrible service then this is a place to try. read more

The food here has been generally very good. My last visit to Grinders West was just awful though. The service was so poor that we ended up paying for the one dish ( a salad) that was brought to the table, and leaving. The server was so tragically inept and bitchy I was amazed. She was so confused. She was taking the wrong orders to all the tables she was servicing that night. She brought me a regular Cola, and I'm diabetic, so if I hadn't caught it, then I could have gotten very sick. I always double check before I drink something in a restaurant. It's just very irritating when it happens. When I asked to talk to a manager, they said they would go get her. They just blew us off and never bothered to find her. When we told a guy making salads about our unpleasant situation trying to get some food and service, we got a huge dose of attitude. I won't go back. Great spot for lunch. I ordered the pick two, half cali blt and half fried goat cheese salad. The sand which was great, had avocado and spicy chipotle on it. Great balance of sweet and spicy. The salad was excellent too, at first I didn't like the dressing that was on it - balsamic vinaigrette - it was very different than any dressing I have tried before. The Hubs and I have been to Grinders a couple of times and decided to try Grinders West on our date night. We both ordered the chicken sandwich which was awesome. We took it apart to try to guess all of the ingredients so we could recreate it at home! My goat cheese salad was okay if you like goat cheese which apparently I don't. It tasted "musty" and a few pieces of lettuce were very wilted. That's the price you pay at a restaurant that buys it's food daily and has no fridge. I like the idea of knowing it wasn't there yesterday but it was still wilted (shrug) The best part of ALL was the side of smoked gouda potatoes we got as an appetizer. WOW. We did actually recreate this at home! Absolutely try it if it's on the menu when you go. The down side was they have a limited beverage selection and the soda is served in the can with an ice filled cup. Very Southwest airlines. It's funky, the waitresses are fun, the food is good and you should try it at least once. read more

Grinder's West is a great place to chow down for the average millennial, according to the observations of my worldly teenage self.. It has a very hip accent in it's interior design, as well as a welcoming, energetic atmosphere. Located on 18th street, next to Grinder's, Grinder's West's bar counterpart, it offers a decent capacity parking lot directly across the street, complimented with a line of street meters. Being in the Crossroads District of Kansas City, Missouri, it is surrounded by beautiful street art and graffiti, engulfing pedestrians in the culture of the city. Upon entry you must seat yourself, and depending on what time of year you choose to dine, in my case it was the peak of the lunch hour (noon in case you're slower) on a summer Friday with a heat index of 107, so we had the option of dining indoors or outdoors, so you can probably guess we chose the comfort of the indoors. In case you're curious, the air conditioning surprisingly beat the July heat and kept us cool. Just a heads up there is one table that could seat about 10 or twelve, otherwise the rest of the place is booths that seat 4-6, or tables that seat 4-6 in the event you're looking for a dining spot that accommodates large groups. We were served immediately after sitting down, and I don't know if this is a make or break for you, but I'll include this just to be safe, this place is a Pepsi product restaurant, so be prepared for the "Is (Diet) Pepsi okay?" response from your waiter/waitress. The kitchen is open and there is a fair amount of noise from that, but to me I loved it contributing to the atmosphere. Our server paid us frequent visits, and our food arrived in timely fashion. My party ordered the following: California BLT, The House Salad, The Piggy Morgan, and a BLT + Pear Salad. They were all content and satisfied with their orders. I ordered the ever so intricate 12" Cheese Pizza. Served on a large metal disc that took up a good portion of our booth's table (5 people total in our booth) that was partnered with a stack of paper plates. The pizza was cut into sixths, wasn't too thin and wasn't too thick, just right in thickness. The size of each slice was a little large though, I would've preferred it was cut into eights. Everything was reasonably priced and well-crafted. The overall experience, setting, and food all roll into a perfect five stars for me. I really enjoyed Grinder's West. read more
