Had a wonderful dinner with my entire family. Service was great and the servers were very personable. I ordered the fried calamari for appetizer and the filet mignon for my entrée which was delicious. My wife ordered the linguine with white clam sauce and she loved it. Everything tasted fresh and the atmosphere was very warm. It is a bit pricey but personally I don't mind paying for great service and food. Grissini's has always been a staple restaurant for my aunt and uncle, that I finally decided to take them up on their offer. Came in for dinner on a Thursday night, pretty good crowd. Had a drink at the bar, and brought over to the table. Had a nice table by the front windows in the back by the kitchen. I started with the tuna tartar which tasted super fresh and delicious. For my entree, I got a veal special that was over some nice grilled broccoli rabe. Veal was cooked perfect, and it was a really great tasting entree. Food is always consistently good but the wait staff, specifically the "captains" are aloof, inattentive, and generally not very good at what they do. They recite your specials and then congregate near the kitchen telling jokes the rest of the time you're there. Every now and then, you can flag down a bus boy to ask for another drink or for your check. This place is now just a waste of time. read more

I've been here a few times. While I enjoy the overall experience when I go, there are always awkward moments. First of all, the statement about all the Benzes outside is definitely true. I'm not surprised they hide the less flashy cars in the back. The decor is understated and the restaurant isn't too large. They have tile floors and I always find the tables against the windows to be a little chilly. The service is very old school. These servers won't be the recipients of any personality awards any time soon. They are abrupt and all business as they list the specials to you. They remain relatively nonreactive and I always feel this rushed pressure to order quickly and correctly. Soup Nazi, anyone? I usually spoil my appetite on the bread here. It's so darn good with the olive oil. It's fresh and they put it in the oven to leave it warm and crispy when you get it. They always have new specials but as other Yelpers have warned, be wary and ask for prices! They can be inexplicably expensive. The raviolis I had didn't taste canned at all. I've tried the cheese and mushroom ones. I've also had the salmon in an orange glazed sauce, with asparagus and mashed potatoes. I absolutely LOVE salmon, so I'm kind of an expert in deciphering a quality salmon dish ;) While mine was a little overcooked, I still enjoyed it. The potatoes were simply to die for! They gave me a pretty large portion in comparison to the size of my fish, but I still finished them all. Definitely full of cream, butter and other fatty yumminess! Try the Tiramisu for dessert. I never order steak anywhere unless it's a pro steak house ! Menu looked so good I thought I give it a try. Omg better than any top steak houses !!! Cooked absolutely perfectly Black and blue !!! Chart on both side !!! To get my steak black and blue it's not easy especially both sides black . Every steak house makes it black only one side because they can overcook . This restaurant got a really really good grill . Quality of the steak fantastic ! Just a right amount of fat and perfectly seasoned ( salt ) !!! I had a party in my mouth from every bite ! Another dish was chicken something I'll get the name next time it was fantastic ! I don't like chicken usually but this dish had a perfect sauce just enhanced the chicken lightly . Oh we got oysters for appetizer and every oyster was size of my hand lol . So plump so juicy so fresh ! Absolutely everything was perfection ! Sundays complimentary zeppole amazing . My husband and I visited Grissini's for an early weekend dinner; it was recommended by a friend and is nearby. The decor is a bit stiff for my taste, though some may find it fitting of old world Italian. There are some lovely art pieces by the bar. The staff is reminiscent of traditional Italian restaurants with all male waitstaff. The maitre'd was extremely gentile and accommodating. Extensive wine list. I recognized many wines I purchase and was disappointed with the very very high markup. My chicken francese was average. It was good but not anything special. My husband enjoyed the special of the day down to the bone! Grissini's is a very nice restaurant with decent food but value vs. quality..I feel it is overpriced. read more

Watch your wallet. If you've got money to burn, come here to eat. I stopped here to eat lunch yesterday. I'm still getting over the whirlwind railroading I went through. Starting off, they have valet parking even though there were some easy parking spots available. I read the ticket stub and, as you'll see below, they "recommend" a tip between $3-$5. Upon entering through three separate doors, (I guess they're insulating the public from their prices), I was ignored for a few minutes before being seated at a nice table with a linen tablecloth and napkins. I declined water and asked just for iced tea. It was at that point I noticed the offering of four different wines- $28-$60 / glass! Wow. The menu had some good variety but as this was lunch I opted for a $15 individual pizza. Apparently there was a language barrier as the waiter said something incoherent, took my menu and left. A few minutes later I got some bread with oil, a nice touch. 5 minutes later, I got two slices of tomato with fresh mozzarella on top. Another nice touch. Ten minutes later the pizza arrived- cooked well and fresh. I ate a little over half, waited around and after finally being recognized again, I asked for the check. A different person delivered the check and thanked me. I was incredulous to find that I was charged $20 for those two slices of tomato and cheese! After the 15% tip, I left with $49 charged to my credit card. I chalked that up to the language barrier, and lesson learned- Don't just nod your head politely when someone says to you, "We're going to royally screw you" in a foreign language. I gave the parking guy $1 as I had the car parked before he came up to take my keys. So- if you've got $50 to spare, Go To Grissini! read more

I was just at Grissini for the second time this week. Before I started to write this review I read some of the negative reviews including the very angry, childish, annoying & boorish Dawn P. Depending on your point of view I am very fortunate to live my life abroad and 'on the road' in hotels and restaurants or unfortunate since I'm on the road most of the time. While I clearly agree that Grissini is an expensive restaurant the bottom line is that they deliver and they deliver consistently. The most important thing I look for in restaurants are of course cleanliness, food quality, taste, followed by service, ambiance etc. I will agree that paying these prices and sitting in wicker chairs is not the best thing but I'm being real picky here. I would like nicer chairs as in Lunello's and Il Capriccio. When you walk into this restaurant you probably have a good idea what the prices are and let's face it like the old saying says goes, "good things cost money". But at Grissini's they deliver time and time again. Having the good fortune of traveling around the world, one of the greatest dishes I've had and probably the best thing I've ever put in my mouth was the white truffle risotto served on the fall menu. The other night I had a tuna tartare that was very good, a sausage and asparagus risotto, excellent, and find me a better veal piccata. One note I don't like reading the specials. I prefer hearing about the specials maybe having them in the main menu on print as a back up is ok. You could never keep up with what the waiter is telling you when they read you of all the specials. One thing that I really greatly prefer is that the prices be listed on the specials menu. I really don't like guessing games when I try to figure out how much it's gonna cost me for a Dover sole which I don't mind paying for as long as I know. The bottom line here folks they really have good food, really good consistently. And yes it does cost more but in this guests opinion it is well worth it, time and time again. read more

I had terrible experience. It was kind of discrimination. That ruined my daughter's birthday party. I made reservation at Grissini to celebrate my daughter's birthday. When my assistant called, she explained to a receptionist that my family would have my daughter's birthday party there. But, when we arrived there at 5 PM last Saturday, a woman called Arianna led us to the table right next to the door. Most tables were vacant at that time. At that time, my daughter took a guide dog. I think after the woman saw the guide dog, she led us to the table to the entrance. When I complained about such a discriminatory act, another woman called Cassandra responded that the table next to the entrance is best spot in the restaurant. I was very upset with such a weird response. Then we left without having meal. read more

We had tickets for a show at the terrific Bergen PAC in Englewood Cliffs, NJ and wanted to find a restaurant where we could have a nice but quick meal beforehand. We found Grissini's online and had not been there before but we will most definitely be back! This is an old establishment, we were told it's been there for 30 years, and the old-fashioned way they greet you, seat you and bring you a drink was absolutely charming. I haven't seen an entire male wait staff all dressed in a suit and tie ever! I loved this part and on top of that, they were excellent - attentive, quick and friendly. When we explained about our show time, we were assured they would make it happen. The food was fantastic! I had a delicious Caesar salad, not drowing with dressing, light and perfectly salted (I LOVE salt so this is a favorite of mine). My husband had the colossal shrimp and they were colossal. They were expensive at $9 each but I tasted one and it was more like a shrimp-steak, you had to eat it with a knife and fork. Cold, fresh and firm. Lovely. I had the Penna al Russa and while this is a fairly common dish at most Italian places, it was delicious and well worth it. I couldn't finish it all and took the rest home for lunch the next day. My husband had the 16 oz. Bistecca al Ferri. The steak was done perfectly at medium rare and my sample of it was wonderful; juicy, tasty, tender. Yum. I had ordered a side of spinach as well and it was nicely sautéed with olive oil and garlic. More yum. We were watching the clock but dessert and decaf capacchino were served in plenty of time for us to make our show. We were full and happy when we left and promised we'd be back. And while the prices weren't inexpensive, we've certainly paid more for less elsewhere. This place was definitely worth the cost. The valet parking is an extra bonus (their parking lot is very small) and even though the restaurant was very busy (ie: packed) on a Thursday night, we didn't wait long for our car. And if can you judge by the Lamborghini's, Ferraris, Lexus, BMW's and Mercedes that were parked there, the clientele is fairly sophisticated. But I'd recommend this place to anyone, you'll find friendly and helpful service and delicious Italian food! Bon Appetite! read more

This place is straight out of the Sopranos from the minute you pull up to valet you better hope your car is a luxury vehicle or at the very least washed. When you walk in you kind of get the sense that this is a members only restaurant however for the most part their staff is pleasant. Its a family and "family" atmosphere wink wink. Dress is upscale although the space itself is a bit dated. The food is incredible. There is not one thing off the menu that myself or my dinner company has disliked. It's a bit pricey but you're getting what you pay for. I've been a few times but most recently I went for Easter. My mom and I ordered the oysters and calamari salad to split. For dinner she got the lamb shank and I got the pork loin specials. Their wine selection is excellent and their waiters are skilled at pairing. I have to say that this was a borderline 4 star for me, but it's based on the clientele it's trying to attract. I assume most clientele that this place attracts is above Yelp, so maybe you get what I mean. If you make $150k or less or appreciate value for what you pay for, this is not the place for you. In other words, find a sugar daddy or have an Englewood Cliffs address that has separate dorms for the help and your mistresses. My Hoboken address and 6'-2" meat and potatoes frame is unsuitable for the clientele they want here. Grisini has great atmosphere though, and has an intimate presence like no one else on Sylvan Ave. I loved what I saw when I walked in. The charm is soon lost by mediocre service and portion sizes. The bill is overly surprising as well. Bread came five minutes before the appetizers, and the apps came 25 minutes after we ordered. The drinks we ordered also came out wrong. I would suggest the saying name the drinks as they are being laid down when they can be confused easily. The calamari was excellent, but portioned for a sorority girl after her grip on the reality of the freshman 15. The giant sea scallops were worse. Four scallops for $30; you do the math. They were good, but go down the road and save $10 and get a double portion. read more

Grissini is one of those places that wows you every time you drive by it and most likely, it'll intimidate you because the whole parking lot is full of black Mercedes Benzes and Porsches. I live less than a mile away from the restaurant and that's what's always prevented my family from wanting to even step foot inside. And what you don't know is that they purposely park only the nice cars up front. Apparently, they park the "lesser" cars in the back (where passer-byers can't see them). So last year, on my parents' wedding anniversary, I decided to treat them to dinner at the Grissini, as it was close by and because we had never been. My dad whipped out the S Benz so that we could fit in with the crowd and surely enough, they valeted our car to sit out front. As we stepped foot inside, we were really surprised. It didn't seem upscale AT all. It's also set up quite strangely and very narrow. We were led through the entrance to sit in what felt like a narrow hallway... and I firmly believe that you can guesstimate how good the food at an Italian restaurant will be by the bread that they serve. Let's just say that the bread was a good augury of what (bad) food was to come. Our server was also not friendly or personable at all... Our individual meals were overpriced and didn't taste any better than your standard Italian chain restaurant (like Maggiano's). In fact, I think I even prefer Maggiano's over Grissini. Conclusion: Grissini is all hype. Better save your $ and go to one of the chain restaurants at the Riverside Mall only 4-5 miles away. read more

To preface this, I like Grissini based on a couple of things: In context of NJ fine dining, this place is always consistent, rustic, and a real people pleaser. I like the overall character of this place, and though took some time for me to really 'get it', the trick here is to feel like a local. The food is fine, not too inventive, but the prices will upset people who don't get with the atmosphere. You'll have to be entirely price insensitive to eat here, which is pretty representative of the crowd here. It's definitely the spot for well-off baby booomers, with the occasional table of birthday celebrators. It's a very local scene, and everyone knows one another, the waitstaff, the bartenders, etc. Someone mentioned the mafioso vibe, but well, that's kind of the fun of Italian restaurants in Jersey, right? If the prices get to you, the owners of Grissini couldn't care less. It's an old school crowd, and you'll notice the stable of extremely high end cars lined up in front of the restaurant. This is definitely gimmicky, b/c every time I come here in my Honda, they stow it faaaaar out of sight. =) The waitstaff is all older men, all accented, in bowties and white coats but not stuffy at all. They are really old-world service oriented, and coach you through your menu and meal; they essentially have the same cordial demeanor of restaurant managers who come out and schmooze. Food: While the specials often overwhelm the menu items by sheer volume, the menu items are generally a safer bet. The exception here is the homemade pastas, which are very good. Appetizers: some of my favorites are a deep-fried mozz with capers and anchovies, and seared scallops. Entrees run the gamut with decent steaks, very good pastas, and underwhelming, but fine, fish. Just be aware, the waiters here are quick to say that everything is delicious, kiss their fingers and raise their chins in a convincing display. The pastas are always the safest bet. One trap is the linguini fra diavlo which is a special - lobster tail and shellfish in a spicy tomato sauce... it's good, but it's $50 (and prices are not announced with the dish). Atmosphere: Small, simple, well lit, romantic, cozy, and very warm. It's just old world charm; the owners here really understand service and atmosphere. Feels very Joisey. Misc: It's a pretty bad wine list but the food is built to be enjoyed with wine rather than cocktails. Just came back fro a quality dinner with my wife and family friends at Grissini's. This was our second time at Grissini's. We love this restaurant. In the past, the table prepared bronzino, homemade pastas, filet of sol... All amazing! Tonight, 42 oz prime cowboy steak was the feature and a few plates of pasta, oysters, pizzas. I would have loved to have snapped a few photos, but it wouldn't have been appropriate at Grissini's. The parking lot is dressed up with top notch vehicles: (tonight) a Bently, McLaren Lambo, Porsche Twin turbo, G-Wagon... People that own these cars don't snap pictures of their steak.
