From the service to the drinks/food everything was a 10. Our server Abby was extremely friendly and attentive. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and offered help when asked. The biscuits they served at the beginning of the meal were fantastic! Nice hint of cheddar and very light. I had the Vidalia Salad - good sized portion and the dressing was spot on. I had the Grits Martini as my entree. I am normally not a fan of grits but they were cooked perfectly and the addition of bacon with the pan seared shrimp was delicious. Wow! Phenomenal! We popped in on a Tuesday evening. No reservation necessary. There was plenty of street parking available as well. We were kindly greeted at the door and requested a table outside as we had a small dog. The complimentary biscuits were amazing and the butter was soft and spreadable (as it should be!!). We ordered the blackened salmon special (over a bed of cheddar grits, chorizo, and remoulade sauce) and the southern fish fry. The salmon was incredible. Cooked perfectly with a crisp. All of the ingredients paired well together. My wife was very happy with her fried dish. She felt the shrimp was tastier than the fish itself. The fish could have also been fried a little more crisp. They brought a water bowl out for our dog which was super thoughtful. Unfortunately, I was too full to try dessert, but the list looked great! They also had dessert drinks that looked incredible: peach cobbler martini with graham cracker, apple cobbler martini with caramel rim...Mmmm! I might order an appetizer and dessert next time instead of an entree. It would have been great if they had insect control (tiki torches or candles with insect-repellent chemicals) so we did not have to defend our food the entire time we ate! First, a note-I don't kiss on a first date (not a hard rule) and I don't give five stars on a first meal. If ever I would consider giving five stars on a first dining experience, Grits would be on that short list. My wife and I eat light so we sometimes make a meal of appetizers. Grits offers a sampler. Maybe the best sampler ever. There was a grits fritter; crusty on the outside with normal grits on the inside. Next there was grilled shrimp on a fried green tomato. And third was 4 tiny egg rolls. The fritters were served on a sauce. All this was served with two dipping sauces; a sweet chili sauce and a remoulade. The presentation was a work of art. Next came our ginger soy ahi with cucumber relish and wasabi aioli and Asian flatbread. It was every bit as fascinating as it sounds and very tasty. Once again the presentation was top notch. We had the appetizer version but it was also offered as an entree. (The Mrs.had to talk me down from ordering that.) We topped that off with the "ultimate wedge salad". There was none left on the plate. Our waitress, was charming, considerate, mature, attentive and helpful. It was a super busy, Christmas season, Friday evening but they squeezed us in without reservations. We really appreciate that. Finally, ambience; Forsyth is a small, humble country town. However, if they wanted to, Grits Cafe could easily compete in a larger market. The inside is surprisingly roomy, divided into a bar and several more seating areas including a private room. That division keeps the noise to a relatively low level. The decor is more upbeat than one might expect in a sleepy little town. There are cozy touches like a fire place and prominent impressionist art on the walls. Its either very well maintained or recently updated because the paint looks new. We travel a good deal. Grits Cafe is a pleasant surprise. We get tired (hate fast food) of the same old menus of meat and potatoes, pizza, Mexican, Italian or Chinese or BBQ. Love all those once in a while but....... Grits Cafe is an Oasis in an otherwise boring culinary landscape. It was the best meal and experience we have had in months. read more

We sat down (with a limited amount of time for lunch) and it took nearly 15 minutes for someone to even come to start our order. Then the food, which again was excellent, took even longer. We were driving through Forsyth, Georgia and used yelp to find this great little lunch spot. We got there late in the afternoon and found the place very quaint and the staff was extremely friendly. We ordered off of the lunch menu and enjoyed an order of southwestern spring rolls to start things off. They were delicious with a very unique south-western flair. We had the fettuccine with grilled salmon and found it very unique, in a good way. The red cream sauce was very light and not that heavy cream that generally comes with a fettuccine dish. In conjunction some crispy fried spinach gave the dish a wonderful feel and was very flavorful. We also ordered the shrimp and grits. It was definitely a New Orleans style with a nice dark creamy roux. The andouille sausage was crisp and flavorful. I'm a big fan of shrimp and grits and I'm very picky about how my shrimp is cooked. It is too easy to over cook the shrimp into a mushy mess - not this time, shrimp were perfectly cooked. The dish was really elevated with the ciabatta bread and the addition of the chard broccoli Overall we enjoyed our experience and the staff again could not have been more friendly. If we find her ourself driving through Forsyth Georgia again, this will be a definite stop. read more

So far so good! Quant, with a southern small town atmosphere, smack dap in the middle of downtown. The place is full of ambience with the decor, lighting, and general overall feel. The service is impeccable! From the greeting at the door to Nathan at the bar-SPOT ON! I stopped in for dinner and had the blue plate special...don't let that name fool you it was an amazing rendition of shrimp and grits. The jumbo shrimp was lightly fried (they were perfectly cooked) on top of very traditional cheesy saw mill grits. I also ordered a side salad that as perfectly dressed and I toped it off with the chocolate bread pudding which was out of this world (sorry I forgot to take a picture)! The story of how I even found this place is almost a Southern tale of its own reckoning. I was in town for a wedding at Indian Springs State Park and was feeling depressed about my food options off of I-75 (Taco Bell, McD, etc.). Then, it just started raining so I turned into the historic Forsyth downtown and pulled into a parking spot till I stopped raining. And then I saw the Grits Café! Woah! This looks good, I thought, so I looked it up in Yelp and realized I had accidentally found an amazing place to eat. All of the sobriquets on Yelp about this place are real: it's Southern, New Southern, Southern fusion, New American, etc. There are actually two menus - a sit-down version and one at night for more gastro pub kind of food. I didn't have the latter, but it looked good. The menu is Southern and of a higher plateau, but also affordable. This place should appeal to a wide array of people: romantic date nights, Sunday family meals, and even tourists. I had two amazing dishes here: a Caesar salad with grits croutons (WTF, GTFO) that was filling enough just to be a meal on its own, and a cheesecake with an Oreo crust and covered in local blueberries and strawberries that just about blew my mind. Like my hands are trembling writing this. Thaaaat good. The only negative was some loaded fries that didn't hold up too well an hour later after I had taken them to go. Maybe this was my fault for ordering something that has to be eaten hot, but just wanted to mention it. I lived in Georgia for 12 years and have no problem driving down to Forsyth during my next trip to visit the Grits Café again! read more

Grits went south under the old owners. Both the service and the food were very disappointing. My wife and I decided to give them another try on Tuesday evening around 6 pm. Keep in mind this is a small town and Grits is generally regarded as an expensive option by the locals. We walked up to the hostess station only to be told it was a 30 minute wait. My wife and I looked around at basically a 1/4 full restaurant and decided a 30 minute wait was not only something we did not want to do, but due to the prior 2 very disappointing visits, not something we were willing to risk. It's a shame, Grits was amazing a couple years ago. Not sure if they are under staffed or the hostess just doesn't care. I know if I owned this business I would make sure my staff bent over backwards when a customer turns around to leave. It will never make sense to wait for a table when there are dozens available. Service makes or breaks a restaurant, but bad food and bad service will kill it fast. read more

My husband travels the world and country for work and a lot of times I'm with him so we have ate at many places. Fine dining to hole in the wall and everything in between. However out of all the places this place will be the one that will always stick out because I had the BEST Pork-chop from here. I don't like ordering pork chops because their always over cooked and dry.....NOOOO NOT THIS PLACE. This pork chop was like no other it was melt in your mouth and full of flavor. It was also served with a BLT Mac and cheese which was penne pasta and it was great! We also ordered the steak and shrimp and yes that was good but for the first time a pork chop stole the show! If I lived around here I would order this at least once a week. The service was exceptional and I asked the waitress if she knew the back story of the building from the 1800's and she was able to tell us a little history on the place. I was in Forsyth for business and was looking for somewhere, anywhere, that would provide a decent meal. When nobody invited me back to their house for some southern home cooking, I thought I was doomed to the choice between a road trip out of Forsyth or a meal at the local diner. Then I found Grits. *applause* I walked into Grits alone and was greeted by people who made me feel like family. I sat at the bar and enjoyed some signature cocktails while learning about the history of the restaurant and looking at the menu. This place is unexpectedly nice for such a small town. I also learned that most of the produce they use is grown right there around Forsyth! I ordered a salad and the shrimp and grits. It was incredible - the smoked gouda in the grits was to die for and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. I could eat it every day for a month straight and still love it. If you're reading this, you're probably in Forsyth faced with the same dilemma I had. Don't think about it any longer - go to Grits and thank me later. read more

OMG I'm in love! I was looking for something new and delicious and this was it. Atmosphere 5/5: quaint and artistic. The brick interior walls are adorned with textured paintings. The tables are old fashioned wood with a flower and candle atop. The lighting is kept low and also appear old fashioned. The ceiling has green circles to mix in some modern flair. Service 5/5: my waitress April was awesome considering how many tables she had. She was very friendly. Food 4/5: the food was fresh and hot. I ordered onion soup (no bread). I liked how they had a firm roasted cheese on top of the bowl. It was unique and tasted mature. For the main course I ordered shrimp and grits. I was surprised to find the grits had a tangy barbecue sauce. I wasn't used to the flavor at first but it proved enjoyable as evidence by the clean plate. I wasn't a fan of the sausage crumbles and would have preferred them cooked in with the grits to soften. For desert I opted for the creme brûlée. I was excited to find blueberries and strawberries on top. But I did not see or taste vanilla bean in with the custard. This omission was inconsistent with the fine dining experience. Overall: 4.5/5 stars. The entree was delicious but the creme brûlée was a let down for me. I would definitely recommend trying this place out! read more
