My biggest gripe about Cave Creek in general is the confusing mass of business street signs that mean finding the place you're looking for can be a nightmare; especially during the peak tourist season. So, I travelled back today to eat at The Grotto (3rd attempt at finding it - the other two were by motorcycle; this trip was by car). No disappointments, wrong-turns or car horns honking at me today. It was very nice, and bustling inside, but with a good atmosphere. Lots of drink and food choices (I counted exactly 30 menu options with a few veggie choices in the mix). As usual, we had a breakfast burrito, a coffee and a tea. The burrito was a good mix of egg, chorizo, potato chunks and cheese. Good portion size for two, and gone in less than 5 minutes - the only docked points were for the chorizo, which I just couldn't taste / see at all. The coffee is from the Roastery of Cave Creek (ROC). Not my favorite at all to be honest. I drank it for several years out of lack of choice at a previous work location. Let's just say, it's an acquired taste. Maybe it's to your liking, but not mine. There are other hit drink options (MoCafe), so don't let this deter a visit; but definitely worth a mention. read more

Grotto Café is a neighborhood gem! The food is always fresh and delicious! They have a loveliest patio that has plenty of shade on hot sunny days. Not sure if it was the bacon on the sandwich or the fact that I was dead after hiking black mountain but I really loved my BLT sandwich. This place was nice and offered but indoor and outdoor sitting. There was a band playing outside the day we visited. I had not been to Cave Creek before and I definitely enjoyed this restaurant. Hadn't been to the Grotto in several years and gave it a try for breakfast. Had the Red Truck sandwich with apple bacon, cheddar and scrambled eggs on sesame seed bagel and side of fresh fruit. It was delicious!!! Plenty of outside seating with umbrellas. Very pleasant. We will definitely go back in the near future. read more

After a fun day of walking up and down the main section of town, which is full of interesting shops, I wound up at the Grotto Cafe. This restaurant is fairly big and you can sit anywhere outside in the plaza. This is the type of restaurant where you order first, then take a number to your table so the server can find you. It was difficult to decide from a number of delicious-sounding items. I wanted to try two different kind of tacos, but they came in a combo meal of two plus side dishes instead of a la carte. So I settled on the nachos. When the server brought the huge plate of nachos with cheese, beans, guacamole, sour cream, and carnitas, people sitting near me asked what I ordered. When their dish arrived, it was equally huge. They shared the cobb salad. This restaurant was full even at 2:00 on a Wednesday due to spring break, and it looked like because the Grotto also served burgers and fries as well as Mexican dishes. read more

Sandwich was good. The patio was lovely. I give four stars only because a customer let his dog bark on the patio during most of our lunch. I don't like dogs nor owners who think their animals somehow have the right to disturb others in public places. It detracted from the relaxed ambiance. Sandwiches were fine, but nothing outstanding. Two of us ordered sweet potato fries and one regular fries--the sweet potato fries came out nearly cold. Regular fries were nice and toasty, though. Came here pre-covid19. We had breakfast in mind and they had a lot of good things on the menu to select from. We found this hidden place thanks to the red truck! Plenty of parking, seating inside and outside. We got inline to order our breakfast. We got our drinks and hunted for a table inside. Table was not cleaned, we had to asked for it to be cleaned. The friendly staff did clean it. Then she came back with our delicious grotto bowls. Everything in the breakfast bowl was good (chicken apple sausage, eggs, potatoes and cheese). The side of fresh fruit was good as well. You do have to when in line to get a refill of ice tea! read more

I've been coming here consistently as a local for over a year now and I hate to say it but the quality is going downhill. They aren't nearly as busy as they used to be, line way out the door and all tables full. What they've got going for themselves is a convenient location, an abundance of outdoor seating and misters going when it's ridiculously hot outside. I like their baked goods, iced tea and fish tacos. They used to have great smoothies but the last was so bad my mom (who was a fan) said it tasted overly sweet, like something she'd get in a fast food drive through. Oats were mushy like it was overly nuked and they forgot to bring milk. Yuck, I cannot stand restaurants that use microwaves. I used to really like the grotto but not so much anymore. Also seems like a high turn over and new staff who aren't trained properly. read more

Take this with a grain of salt because I am not a huge fan of ordering at the counter and having food delivered. I love table service and that's just me. The tuna salad on a sandwich is my favorite choice. However, the other options kind of leave me a little disappointed. If you don't want meat, they only have one option and it's kinda clunky/messy. Hard to eat without getting it everywhere. I do love the outdoor seating and the decor is a fun but you have to get there pretty early as it's limited and can fill up quickly on a nice day. read more

Grotto cafe is another gem in Cave creek. They have ample seatings inside and out even a private meeting room. It's order at the counter and take a number deal. We ordered Lox bagel and it came with wild smoked salmon. The dill cream cheese was really yummy in this. The saltiness of capers and crunch from the onions were absolutely perfect combo. The French toast was served with fresh banana and strawberries which was nice contrast from the sweet savory French toast. The employees checked in on us often which was nice because we were sitting on the far end of the cafe. Their latte was yummy too. They also had milk substitutes. If you can't decide which of the 3 salads you want, order the Trifecta, which yields one scoop each of the Grotto's chicken, egg, and tuna salad on a lettuce leaf. Each salad can vary from good to excellent. Not always consistent. Please strive for consistency. The French fries are fabulous, crispy outside and soft inside. The service varies from speedy to not so but you will get your food accompanied by a friendly smile . The vintage posters of musicians from different eras of the 20th will capture your attention while you will enjoy listening to animated conversations from the philosophy of Ra to the politics of the day. The atmosphere is convivial and lively. I can not give it 5 stars because of the inconsistency of the salad, but this is a favorite place to brunch, lunch or linner.. Enjoy! read more

The atmosphere here is very nice! On a Sunday morning around 9:30 it was busy but there was quite a lot of seating, inside and out. Overall the service was speedy and the servers were sweet. The drinks and food were just okay. We had the oatmeal, French toast & biscuits & gravy. The French toast seemed a little chewy & the gravy has a very thick herb presence. We really like the place...nice rock and roll theme, good food, great staff, comfortable seating. What's not to love? Well I have a nit to pick with one of their dishes. My wife and I were there for lunch earlier today. I had the BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado) sandwich on toasted sourdough bread. It was very tasty but it missed the mark. Why, you ask? Because they used some crappy wilted lettuce on the sandwich. Everything else was great. Applewood bacon, great tomato, sourdough bread...but the lettuce was crap. Folks at the Grotto, if you are reading this, know we love your cafe, but any BLT type sandwich needs iceberg lettuce. It provides part of the crunch. Love you guys...highly recommended...but please fix the BLTA. read more
