Excellent coffees, lattes, and Mexican hot chocolate all made with almond milk per request. Biggest pro: Protein muffins made without sugar are DELICIOUS. Also, super friendly service. First off, I'm a coffee snob. I've worked for Intelligentsia which I've always thought was unbeatable until I came here. The shop is quite small but the coffee has some big flavor. Cheaper than the Starbucks and Coffee Bean on the block and so much more on-point. The cold brew and dirty chai are my two caffeinated drinks and this place has the best of both. If you despise long lines, packed houses with laptop, baby strollers and so on, this is your place. The best kept coffee secret in Venice (even though its in Santa Monica) is this particular Groundworks (the one on Rose for some reason does not taste that good). Literally, this place is just a corridor and what an awesome corridor it is. I go there to buy coffee grounds and espressso - and as stated above, to completely avoid the coffee crowds. Got the latte and the hazelnut latte. Literally two of the best tasting lattes I've ever had! Amazing. 5 stars for the quality of drinks. Minus one star just because the inside is so small drinking there isn't much of an option. For me that's usually important. read more

Okay so no way else to put it: this place has truly delicious things happening all inside this pretty small place. I ordered a basic cup of coffee (the proprietor had just brought out a fresh thing of some Ethiopian brew) and it was marvelous! For some reason it was the best cup of coffee I've ever had. And it's a local shop, so extra points for that. All in all, I would say that anything you would order at other coffee shops would be a knockout here. read more

I've been to Groundworks several times, mainly the one in the new Santa Monica Place. My husband usually orders cappuccino everywhere he goes, and as a consequence I have tried nearly every one as well. We both agree that Groundworks has the best tasting cappuccino around. It's flavorful and bold, with exactly the right amount of chocolatey sweetness and perfectly frothed milk. The best part - it tastes exactly the same every time! Great hole-in-the-wall coffee shop on Main St! They have the best latte I have found in LA. Their ice coffee is wonderful according to my girlfriend. She says it's so good you don't even need cream! Had a very yummy cappuccino, no sugar needed for me, and the barista was kind enough to give me a sample of their Vietnamese Iced Latte (concentrated cold brew and sweetened condensed milk) when I asked about it. Love this place! I always get there hummus bowl salad, literally the best salad I've ever had. It has edamame hummus, broccoli, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, edamame, quinoa, arugula, radish, and chipotle vinaigrette. Whatever chef created this salad is genius . Favorite place for a cold brew in all of Venice/Santa Monica. Not only do they consistently have better cold brews than surrounding coffee shops (Deus Ex Machina, Bullet, Blue Bottle, and Intelligentia)...they also had much fresher pastries which were perfectly moist and sweet. read more

Reminds me of the stores in the Knott's Berry Farm Ghosttown. Except, instead of selling old-fashioned western photos and rubber band guns they have bomb-ass lattes. Alright, maybe not as Westerny as that. But the general brown-ness / wood decor / burlap-sacks-filled-with-coffee feel of the place sorta put you in the same mood. The grind-your-own coffee from a wooden bin is accessible and makes you feel like a pioneer in a general store. Not usually into flavored coffee drinks--or even ones with milk in them--but they do a really good job of highlighting the deep flavors of their exceptional beans instead of burying them under eight squirts of 50-calories-a-pump syrup--ala Starbucks. Lousy patron service !!!! AND no I'm not a competitor but a local a 2 minute walk away. JUST stopped by moments ago and waited almost 10 minutes with ONLY 1 other person there. A bearded staff guy was occupied making a specialty drink I get it BUT there was another staff young lady who went off to the back and completely ignored myself. Another patron arrived shortly and the other worker didn't reappear for awhile.Maybe the dude making the coffee perhaps could have summoned his co-worker huh ? The place is a "shoebox" and narrow confines so ALL talk is within earshot right ? I remained totally silent thru all this but "my" body language conveyed I was "pissed". The other girl came back finally BUT didn't bother to ring up a "bag" of coffee beans.THAT is all I had !! Yet it takes you guys "light years" to get a local costumer at 3:15 pm (real busy huh) out on his way?Oh did I mention I'm a person of "ethnicity" Asian -American to be exact SO "guys" FYI NOT all your core local "potential costumers are "bohemians" or "hipsters". People of descent ALSO like the beach and reside here ; so maybe make it a point to SERVICE all folks equally .Like I said I was "quiet" thru all this BS but my manners escaped me by not saying thanks and so long like I normally do.Anyhow its apparent Groundworks is so well established and successful enough they couldn't care less how or who they render service too.They cater obviously to "only" a select core sector I guess hmnn? I'm a regular at groundwork Montana but was near this location today so I stopped by. There were about 5 employees working and only 2 people in line. I ordered two Vietnamese iced coffees and I had to ask the lady to enter my phone number because I have enough five star points for a free beverage. I waited for 10 mins, everyone else got their drinks and left, my friend and I were sitting there just waiting without a person noticing us until I walked back up to the register and the cashier tried to take my order. I told him I had already ordered and had been waiting awhile for my drinks. Without saying a word he walked to the back and went to grab my drinks. The whole staff was very nonchalant about me being completely forgotten about. I understand completely that groundwork in general gets very busy and on a busy day I would definitely have waited the 10 mins without a problem, however I was the only one in the store at this point, all of the employees were chatting amongst themselves and didn't even acknowledge me until I forced them to. With so many people working in such a tiny location with so few customers I don't really understand how they could just completely forget to make the only two drinks that had been ordered in the past 10 minutes. I think I will stick to the Montana location, they are 100x busier and yet still give better customer service. read more
