I know a few things about engines on mowers, motorcycles and cars. Im getting up there in age and I make enough money to have others repair things for me now. I brought an older lawnboy to Gruel Bros on main street in Crown Point. The engine froze up and wouldn't start. I decided to go in and check on it because they had it for two weeks and hadnt called yet. They said "Bad news man, you are going to need a new mower. The engine seized." He rolled it out and showed me the dip stick. Well the oil was barely touching the dipstick but wasnt completely bone dry like they said. I took it home, pulled the plug and put about two table spoons of oil right into the cylinder. With the plug still out, I turned the blade, which turned extremely easily considering other engines I repaired long ago, were a little stiffer at first. I filled it with fresh 30 weight oil and put the plug in. The rope pulled with ease. I Primed it and the engine started like new on the second pull. The sign in front of Gruel Bros says they repair lawn boys. Buyer beware when you buy something from them or have something repaired there. Their service dept is terrible and they appear to have rather sold a new mower to me then fixed mine in the 10 minutes it took me to fix it. The crazy part is they were the last to service mine last year and this was the first time I used it this year so I may have had 5 cut jobs on a small lot I use it for. It really never ran properly after the first time i brought it in but i figured they would repair the issue from the last visit. The rpms were not high enough and the engine putted instead of running at a higher rpm. That is a simple fix too. Moral of the story... do not bring anything to them, do not buy their used machines and stay away from their new stuff because one day they may have to service it for you. They could be the best! Could be! I brought my lawn mower in for tuneup and repair. I got it back and it ran great. But the wheels were stuck. Like gunked on. They never bothered to check to see if the wheels worked. And their attitude stinks. Yea they are old school. But I thought old school was suppose to be better then new school. The worse part is if you're a brand new customer. Which I was. Because they expect you to know things without being told. For example, I called after they had it for a week or more to inquire about the status. They barked that they hadn't gotten to it yet and would call when they did. Like ok, dude! Just checking up. The service is terrible , I had them work on generator and after I picked it up. It wouldn't run properly . I found out my carb was replaced with a cheap on. The Honda mechanic saw it right away. The other i had was a leaf vacuum , they performed general service and after I got it home and used it well the carb quit working . I had to take it to another lawn service to get fixed properly. Not sure if I understand the other reviewers' experience. My experience was great. I needed a chainsaw repaired and they were reasonable, their prices were not exorbitant and the treatment was fair. It is not a Prada retail store. It's a gardening/landscaping implements store and the people who work there are old school without being impolite. I called this place to get my snowblower fixed in September, they told me to bring it in in November, because they take care of their regular customers first, so I called today and now the want me to wait two weeks and call back to make sure they can accommodate me. Purchased all zero turn mowers: blowers,trimmers for business part 20 years from gruel brothers. Took zero turn in for new tires. Tire almost fell off shortly after getting it back 2 lug nuts missing 1 hanging on by a thread. Obvious not put on correctly. Ruined hub, rim,studs. They would not warranty repairs saying it was my fault tire came off I must of hit something. REALLY. Machine 2 years old no issues until they put new tires on. Management said only 30 days on repairs tires were about 6 weeks old. On Friday Sept 30 I picked up a hege trimmer gruel brothers put new blades on. One bolt sticking out took it back to owner he had technician tighten and check all bolts while I waited. Had backpack blower at gruel brothers over a month to repair rope on pull start. Tried to find out delay in getting back technician stated they were going to put new carburetor on it. Why it ran fine just wanted rope fixed. Can't trust gruel brothers any more new ownership much different from before will purchase equipment and get repairs from a trustworthy repair facility read more

my expierence was bad. the man was rude and insulted my lawn mower. he is going charge me 25.00 just to look at it. I have been going gruels for twenty years and this treatment I get. I am going pick it up this Thursday even though they never looked at the mower. gruel brothers use to be good now they are not, they hire rude people. he didn't even offer help me with my mower. after I get my mower back I will never go back to them ever. read more
