I was glad to see a new offering in the york beach area that was not the usual fast food, candy or ice cream joints. As the only Tex-Mex offering in the area in quite some time, I was really hoping Guac-n-Roll would make me a repeat customer, with an added bonus that it's within walking distance for where I live (no fighting to park at short sands beach). While they do try very hard to make their customers happy, and the place was new and clean, I found the food was just so-so, certainty not as flavorful as the other choices in the Portsmouth NH area. My adventure stared by calling to see if I could put my name on the waiting list over the phone, I was told "we do not take reservations but we can put your name down and we will consider that when you arrive"... somewhat cryptic but I said ok. When I arrived our name was on the list, and we were asked to wait about 10 mins for them to clear some tables, which we happily did as I was looking forward to a Margarita at the bar. We ordered 2 house Margarita's, which turned out to be mix and bottom shelf Tequila. It tasted a bit bland, and my companion even said it was "warm" as the mix was not chilled, but then again it was their house mix so I was not expecting top-shelf. Our table was soon ready so I asked the bartender how much, he said "$16", which I thought was high but then again it is a tourist area and it was the middle of July. On to our table, our waiter took a bit of time to appear but was very nice and efficient. We started with loaded nachos, and then a couple of burritos, a veggie fajita, and my youngest ordered chicken wings for our main courses. The nachos were piled high and pretty tasty, even though I thought there was a ton of cheese and onions (no big deal though). We had high hopes when the main courses arrived, but we found the burritos had more wrap than filling, and the fajita was not "sizzling" as you find in other places. The chicken wings were overly hot and a bit greasy. But we were all hungry and dug in... and while the quality of the ingredients were fine, the flavor was lacking which made us all reach for the hot sauces (a good selection of 3 already on the table, which is a good thing) to compensate. We later asked for our bill and that was that. So while I find myself really wanting to like this place, I cannot see myself going back.... except for maybe some nachos and a beer during a baseball game. read more

I've been trying to find a great Latin restaurant in Southern Maine for the past two years and this past Sunday my boyfriend and I stumbled upon the Guac-n-Roll while exploring York. We've been to every Latin restaurant imaginable in the Greater Portland area and have been disappointed each time, so we were a tad hesitant. However, upon entering Guac, I knew we had struck gold. As a seasoned restaurant server, I'm naturally judgmental, but everything was fantastic. Our server, Kendall, was awesome as she was upbeat, helpful, and timely and I noticed the bus-person was working his ass off even though it wasn't a particularly busy night. My beers were pretty cheap considering what I've paid for beers in the past, our nachos were an enormous helping with tons of delicious house made guacamole, and our burrito bowls were outstanding. The interior was also hip and well put together. We left feeling warm and fuzzy and didn't empty out our wallets. Just planned on a a little birthday dinner here for my family. Stopped there on a Saturday night, sat outside, and was let down after being seated. The chips and pico/guac are tasteless, saltless, and not to mention, the chips are insanely greasy. We ordered chicken taco's which were terrible, reminded me of Margarita's chain style, and then ordered a side of rice and refried beans, which was tiny portions. Also ordered a sweet iced tea, and couldn't drink the iced tea they served, asked for a water instead. Wouldn't you know it, they included the iced tea on the check? The worst part is the rest of the evening, feeling sick from the greasy chips, terrible taco's, and burping up the worse onion mexican taste. Never going here again. read more

Upon walking around downtown York, my girlfriend and I decided to try Guac and Roll. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating which is great for summer time. We were craving the chips and Guac. However, my girlfriend has a gluten allergy and we were told that the corn chips use flour for some reason so we couldn't get them. A letdown but none the less, the margaritas are strong and the selection of food was decent. Got the steak enchilada and fajitas, both were good. I really wanted to love this place. The name cracked me up. Stopped in mid-week with my wife and another couple for nachos and a few beers. Nachos were good and beer was cold. Thumbs up there. Decided to venture back with the rest of the family Friday night. We waited for over an hour to be seated. Once finally seated, took some time to be waited on. After what seemed like forever, our food arrived. All of us were disappointed with our meal. I take that back, my six year old daughter liked her mac and cheese. Fantastic mexican on the beach. I had a Sour Patch Kid Margarita which left nothing to be desired. It was perfect. Their entire margarita section was incredible. The food was fantastic. My girlfriend and I went last week on a relatively calm evening. We had no wait at all and got seated right away. It took 10-15 minutes for our waitress to greet us and take our drink orders, but by then we were ready to order so we just did it all at once. The food and drinks came quickly. Almost suspiciously quickly if you know what I mean. It's just not possibly to make anything fresh in that amount of time. But we were still optimistic and very hungry. The food was almost inedible. It was one of the worst tasting meals I have ever had. That's all I can say. I got the lobster taco and the chicken taco and both were equally terrible. The chicken was obviously frozen, as well as tasteless and rubbery. It came in cubes. It was just plain bad. I took a couple bites of each and then left the rest, it was just a real shame. Such a beautiful location and a great spot for a meal but it was almost inedible. I'm glad I stopped eating because I got a little sick after the meal and so did my girlfriend. My favorite beach to frequent is Long Sands, York, Maine. Last Summer (2011) my younger sister told me about this place. She had me at margarita. I have been back 3 more times, every time enjoying myself.. Located right in downtown York, diagonally across from the parking lot for Short Sands it is a casual place to eat after a day at the beach. We were seated right away every time (even weekends and Fridays) and the servers, drinks and food were prompt. Seating host/hostess were pleasant and every server we have had has been great. So far, from their menu I have tried the pulled pork taco, fish taco and fish burrito. All very yummy indeed. We went last night for dinner and my vegetarian friend tried the house made tofu chorizo burrito. She loved it so much she ordered one to-go for her husband back home. My sister and I both had the fish burrito. It was huge and came with fresh made chips and salsa. The burrito was generously stuffed with battered and fried white fish, "green" rice, beans, veggies and cheese and a drizzle of delicious spiced cream sauce. I could have easily made 2 meals from it, but it was so good I ended up finishing it. The only slight disappointment was the margaritas. Last Summer they had amazing flavors to choose from that were delicious, strong and refreshing. I was daydreaming about mine the next day and went back for more (we all tried banana, watermelon and coconut) This year the menu had changed. I was a bit bummed. My friend got the coconut lime, my sister, the lychee, and myself, the mango. All were lacking in the taste of tequila. The coconut lime and mango were really tart, too much lime. The lychee was good, but not enough tequila. For $9-$10 per, I would have like to taste what I was paying for. All in all, I will continue to go here every time I am in York. The food is fresh and yummy, the indoor/outdoor dining is comfy and quaint AND the bathrooms are clean (very important!!) We got take-out from Guac-n-Roll to bring to the last concert at York Beach. Two of us got the BLT Nachos and one got the BLT Salad. They seemed pricy but the portions were large and looked good. And they tasted good. Until we realized that the BLTs were both missing the homemade guacamole and the BLT salad was missing the avo-ranch dressing. By the time we realized this, we were seated at the concert and away from the restaurant. Too bad the Guac-n-Roll forgot the Quac. read more

Not the place you want to go if you are looking for authentic cuisine. I should have tried the nachos. Instead we got the jalapeño popper dip. It was a block of cream cheese blended with a sprinkle of cheese and diced jalapeños and topped with jack cheese and jalapeños. Essentially nothing more than a block of Philadelphia, it was also lukewarm and overall it had little flavor. For my meal I ordered 2 a la carte tacos, the fish taco and the pork taco (I don't recall the exact names). Both came out cold (intentional??) which was surprising because one was fried fish and the other pulled pork. The fish taco had decent flavor but the temperature ruined it. The pork was very very dry and because it was cold I didn't even attempt eat it (comped from the bill when I mentioned that it came out cold which I had to do unprompted because the server never asked how our meal was). Warm with a little more moisture or sauce I am sure it would have been much more enjoyable because it was stacked it with cheese, one of my many vices. Sour patch margarita was very good, but at $13 I'd expect at least a sugar ring and a fruit garnish (now I'm being picky I guess). Of note, my wife's salad was not bad. Even for the location the salad was overpriced considering it had no meat (besides bacon). The avocado ranch dressing was excellent. There are so many options in the area so unless you are going for drinks and apps I would steer clear. read more

For starters, the restaurant is extremely expensive for Mexican food, but you are paying for a great view in a prime location. One problem we encountered, you do not get served chips and salsa upon arrival, you must pay. They do not offer any sort of queso, which we found unusual for a Mexican restaurant. We didn't have a problem with the food. The fish burrito was delicious, and it came with chips and salsa ($10.50). I could barely finish my meal because the burrito was so large. Went there with my family which included a small child in a stroller, there was no one there eating since it was around 1:30pm. We had a party of 6 adults and 1 baby in the stroller, we asked to sit together and the hostess was very rude and told us that she could not move any of the tables together... not really sure why this was not possible? So we were forced to sit somewhere else otherwise she would of been perfectly fine turning away our business as paying customers. We decided to sit at different tables since we wanted to eat there. About 25 minutes into getting there another party showed up and the hostess gave them no trouble moving their tables together to accommodate their party, I had asked the hostess why they were able to move the tables together but not ours and again she was just rude then proceed to talk about us as we walked out of the restaurant. Very poor customer service here. Don't go if your looking for a pleasant family experience on your vacation. Very rude towards family's. read more

Wow, this place is terrible. Of course, it'll probably do just fine considering most of its customers will be tourists who don't know better, or who have never tasted quality mexican food before. As far as the food goes, the guacamole was decent, but that was about it. I ordered tacos, and the tortillas tasted like cheap packaged wraps. Probably the worst taco in my life. I also ordered the vegetable chili and it was somehow even worse- just not good at all. The only thing this place has going for it is the location, so if you are more concerned with a good location than food taste and quality, eat here. If you like to eat delicious food, don't eat here. We vacation in York Beach every summer and we love this restaurant. I am pretty fussy about Tex-mex cuisine, and I think their food is excellent. The ingredients are all super fresh. Second time dining here...first time (Aug. 2011) food was good, service somewhat lacking. Visited again yesterday and wasn't very impressed. Ordered the steak & fish taco's, price was OK but taco's were runny and not much too them. Biggest thing was the chips & salsa, which many places they're complimentary, not here... $5.00. I have to say the chips were good as well as the salsa, seemed to be fresh but if you want guacamole you can add another $6.00 making it $11.00. the night started with a tray of sangria's dumped on us by our waitress while sidewalk dining. The waitress claimed she was bumped by someone but her drink tray actually hit a pole (column) next to our table ? food was barely adequate, drinks were OK and service was sub-par. The restaurant was crammed packed with people waiting for tables and others standing around drinking at the bar and any other nook and cranny they could find out of the way....it was like a nightclub. Maybe the guest waiting for tables can form a line around the corner on Bay Street ? This would give unobstructed views of the beach from the sidewalk tables and might make the lackluster food more forgettable ? Restaurants in this area are seasonal and the window of opportunity to make a profit is small. At the very least Make It Look Like You Mean Business....having the owner sitting at the hostess station looking like hes the captain of a ghost ship doesnt help ? The owners are living out their lives... obviously wasting both their time and ours. Anybody giving this place more then two stars are taco bell lovers. read more

I'm sorry to say that this restaurant should be a last choice when dining in the area. The meal portions are way too small for the expensive prices, the service is extremely slow and not particularly friendly, regardless of the day of the week or hour of the day (unfortunately I have dined here several times, with every experience the same), and the food was really nothing special. I have tasted quesadillas, burritos, and enchiladas from here before, and I can get the same quality food (which, as I said, is at par with other restaurants) elsewhere. Also, we were introduced to the owner, who seemed incredibly immature and rude. I was shocked with the way my friends and I were treated, as paying customers, and although I love margaritas, I cannot think of a reason I'd want to go back and spend money at a place like this. The only good thing about it is the location, as York Beach is one of my favorite summer spots, particularly Short Sands. Unfortunately, this owner owns the restaurant next door to this one (also nothing special - the only thing it has going is live music at night, which requires a cover charge to get in anyway) so I probably will not be choosing either of these places anytime soon. we went here this evening and i had a carne asada burrito and it was a very large burrito with great flavor. the other person in my party had the chick rita burrito. i asked for the beans and rice on the side. just a sidenote the rice was very spicy. they claim to only put paprika in it but i think they might have accidentally put cayanne pepper in it. it was good but very hot. service was slow and we ordered an appetizer and never got it so we canceled that but were going to try the jalepeno and cheese dip. also never got a refill on our drinks but we did opt to sit outside on the front patio because they had those space heaters and we watched the ocean and the full moon. nice evening for it. i asked for no lettuce on my burrito and they packed it full. aside from that it was really good and we will go back. all in all a very nice place to eat. one more thing they told my friend that the chicken was all white meat and its not. still a good meal though. read more
