I don't write many reviews these days. But this spot deserves one. It's a food truck just outside Hi-Wire (which is another cool place) that makes the best Cuban north of Hialeah. On a nice day, there's nothing better than sitting at a table in this parking lot, eating a Cuban and sipping tequila (shout out to Hi-Wire's bartenders). Unless it gets crowded; then I'm out.

Guajiro describes itself as Cuban comfort food. The location is a combination of a permanently anchored food truck where you order and they cook the food, several outside tables around the food truck and the inside and outside area of an adjoining bar called El Patio de Guajiro. So a nice choice of places to eat both inside and outside. We sat at a downstairs table below the bar next to the food truck and there was great shade and a nice breeze even on an otherwise hot day in the River Arts District (RAD). We had 2 sandwiches: the Pollo a la Plancha (grilled chicken) and the Pan con Lechon (roast pork). Of the two, the Lechon was by far and away better -- very well seasoned pulled roast pork. The seasoning is uniquely Cuban style, so this is not a pulled pork sandwich like you can get anywhere else in Asheville. It was very good as it was served, but the addition of their guava jalapeno hot sauce made it even better. The chicken sandwich on the other hand was good, but not very interesting. The seasoning was not particularly flavorful and the onions were few and bland, but the chicken itself was nicely grilled and the bread it was served on was fantastic, with a nice crispy crunch. Adding some guava jalapeno sauce really saved the chicken sandwich. We had a side of yucca fries. I think the yucca fries are much better at Little Chango. Here they were much thicker cut and so the yucca was a little chewy inside. Still good though and the outside had a nice crispness and flavor. The dipping sauce was just okay (again, Little Chango's sauce is much better). The beers from the patio bar were fine, although the selection was limited. The bar tender was very friendly and courteous. Not quite worthy of 5 stars, but a perfectly good place in RAD for lunch and a beer.

Food & service were fantastic! We ordered beef & a ham/cheese empanadas plus the media noche & Cuban sandwich. All were super tasty & the staff were excellent! Can't wait to go back!

Best Cuban sandwich ever. Stopped by for the first time before a show at the Guitar Bar. Great value - we'll definitely be back!

Unfortunately, it was one of the worst customer service experiences I've had in a while. When our buzzer went off, we returned to pick up our food and received the tacos, but not the chips & guac. When I politely asked about the missing item, the employee immediately responded, "We already gave them to you." I calmly explained that we had not received them. The older gentleman then turned to his coworker and began berating him in front of us and other customers, which created an uncomfortable situation. After that, he turned back to us and said, "You either already got the chips already or you didn't order them." I was genuinely baffled by the response thinking why would I lie about chips and guac. I explained again that we had not received the chips and that there must have been a mistake with the order. Having worked in the service industry myself, I completely understand how busy and stressful things can get. However, the way both customers and coworkers were treated in this situation was unacceptable, especially over something as simple as chips and guac. The food itself was good, but the customer service left such a negative impression that I will not be returning or recommending this business to others.

The doughnuts are double the size of most doughnuts and doubly good. The pretzels are huge, butter basted, warm and delicious. It's not inexpensive but the tastes will cure you of any sticker shock. I spent $40+ for 1/2 dozen regular-1/2 dozen chocolate dipped doughnuts and 6 pretzels with dipping sauces and didn't regret a penny of what I spent. Came back on my way out of town and got a pretzel dog and pretzel for breakfast as well as some doughnuts for later. The food trailer in some of the pictures has been replaced by a building on the edge of Troyer's parking lot. You order at the window and most times there's going to be a line. It's a takeout business so you are on your own if you want to eat right away. The folks are friendly and efficient and orders are filled quickly once you get to the window. If you want to get a preview just search Auntie Ruth's on YouTube and enjoy. It's how I learned that there are a bunch of them in East Tennessee. I just know that if I didn't have enough incentive already to visit my niece then Auntie Ruth's finishes the job.
