A very nice surprise! I stopped eating burritos because of how they make me feel after but I've been craving a good California burrito. Got one and did the special on Mondays which is any burrito with rice and beans for $6.50. The rice had potatoes in it delicious, the beans were ok not great but the Carne was good and the potatoes inside were like home fries very nice. I was surprised how fast we got our food and they are very friendly. The salsa bar is great and they also have chips for you. These burritos are huge so you can share one so you don't fall into a food coma. The place was clean and reasonable parking makes for a quit in and out for lunch. Came in this morning while getting my car serviced nearby, got the #1 breakfast burrito. It was absolutely FIRE! Anytime a breakfast burrito has rice and refried beans, it's a HUGE plus to me. And the bacon in it was cooked perfectly, just crispy enough to have some crunch! Their salsas were all very tasty, and the staff were extremely kind and friendly! I came here after lunch because it's the closest Mexican food to my Kearny Mesa office. It's your normal 'berto's Mexican food shop. Since it was off hours, parking was fine and there only a few others here. This time around I just ordered 3 rolled tacos with guacamole for $4.50. The order taker was helpful and nice. Rolled tacos were nice and crispy right out of the fryer. They have chips, a small salsa bar with hot and mild salsa, carrots and jalepenos, green salsa and raw sliced jalepenos. Will definitely come back to get larger items in the future. read more

So I bought this huge burrito and so anyways it was stuffed with POLLO ADOBADO which is made from grilled marinated chicken instead of pork- and it was so delicious!!!!! Now all i want is pollo adobado! Another thing I really enjoyed putting in my mouth was the carnitas tacos!!!! They are really stuffed huge and filling next time i would just order one with rice and beans and that is definately enough :o)))) I saw that they have option to make any of their burritos "wet" style so I'm definately coming back for some of that because the food here is really good and also FAST!!!!!! Delicious side of bacon cooked just right, nice and crispy but not burned. The rice looks bland at first sight but looks are deceiving it's very flavorful and delicious. Breakfast burrito large enough for two. We had the potatoes, egg, and cheese simple yet delicious. I initially planned to go to another Mexican food restaurant but the hours posted was incorrect and as I walked in to ask when they will open she said about 1-2 hours (strange answer). I'm glad this happened otherwise I wouldn't given this place a chance as it was a couple of blocks further away from our hotel. read more

Love this place! It's right next to my office! In my heavier days I would come get a breakfast burrito here once or twice a week! The Carne asada breakfast burrito is the best! Now when I come in the mornings I get the Carne asada breakfast burrito hold the tortilla and cheese! Still amazing! My lunch time favorites include the carnitas plate, ceviche, and caldo de pollo. I am a sucker for a good caldo! They always give out free chips with order and there salsa bar (even though they only have three) is the best! I also sometimes just go and get a side of chicken as a snack! I know it sounds weird but it's sooo good! The staff is always friendly! Let's just put it this way ... You know a Mexican restaurant/ taco shop is good when you walk in and here are a lot of Mexicans there ... This is definitely the case with this place. read more

By far the best authentic Mexican food I've had so far in this area, maybe even San Diego all together! And the price could'nt be better. So far I've only tried the carne asada burrito and the breakfast burrito #1. The carne asada is seasoned and cooked to perfection... I asked for extra cheese on the breakfast burrito, YUM! They definitely load up when you ask for extra! I'm not exactly sure why some say the breakfast burritos are dry, I haven't had that experience. The #1 is loaded with eggs, rice (SO FREAKIN GOOD TOO) and refried beans. The good kind of beans too! Not the flavorless kind that are obviously added as a filler. And that extra cheese...MAN what a delicious burrito! Both burritos were so filling I couldn't eat them all in one sitting! Great value for your buck! $5 per burrito and two meals out of each one! Im a fan of pollosada burritos...but OH MAN! you HAVE to switch it up with pollo adobado burrito! Its so flavorful! I used to get them all the time...but I moved on to the Surf and Turf here. There rolled tacos aren't bad either. They raised their prices a little, but its still worth it. You also get free chips and salsa here. Another plus for a local taco shop! Gets a little busy during lunch..but its pretty slow the rest of the time. What I don't recommend are their carnesada fries. They psych you out thinking you have more in the take out box because they separate the fries and meat with the guac and sour cream in their own section. Also, their breakfast burritos are kind of dry so I stay away from those..but their burritos are on point! :) read more

We stopped at a nearby place, and they weren't open, even though they were supposed to be. This place was open, yaay! They have great food, and the value is off the charts. We're used to mini tacos, where a person can eat maybe 4 or 5 at once, so that's how we ordered. Luckily, the nice lady at the front told us the tacos here are much bigger. Whew. Fish taco was subpar but you get what you paid for (.99 for one), and pastor taco was overpriced at 2.99 and not as great as the price suggests (i still think el rodeo taco shop makes the best pastor tacos). I was hoping I would find a special place based on all the great reviews. Gualberto's was good, but not special. But let me state that I only had the carne asada tacos, which is my measure of any taco joint. They were good, and I was happy that they were not greasy, but they were nothing special. A slight step above the average, but not enough to warrant four stars (IMO). I also did not think the rice and beans were anything special, not bad but average for a taco joint. The service was crazy fast, but that may be part of the problem. The meat had to have been precooked to be served that quickly. If I am in the area and needed a bite to eat, I would certainly go again. But I would not go out of my way for the carne asada. read more

If they don't have fresh tortilla chips at the counter, just ask and they'll make you some! They have a small but nice and fresh salsa bar too. I love the fresh jalapenos and cucumber slices!!! Vegetarian burritos are delicious!! My husband and kids are straight-up carnivors and won't put up with veg food and they LOVE this place! Breakfast is authentic Mex! Cons: The only thing I don't really don't care for is the carne asada fries. They put the carne asada on the side (as opposed to on top of the fries) and the portion could be bigger. The first time I walked into Gualberto's, I was definitely not expecting it to become my favorite Mexican food joint in San Diego, but it did. I used to work nearby and went there one a week (at least) for lunch. For me, you can judge a Mexican food place by their beans and rice the way you can judge an Italian restaurant by their marinara. We decided to get a chicken burrito to go for $5.50. The service was polite and quick. The burrito was good sized and large enough to share. It tasted fresh and healthy and kind of reminded me of Chick's Natural a litlte. I would definitely go back. My first impression was great and I've heard other positive things about the place. By far my favorite taco shop! I work down the street, so I easy eat there at least once a week. Everything I've tried so far is GOOD! My favorite is the Carnitas Plate (the Thursday Special). You get so much for your money! My co-workers always order rolled tacos and Pollo Asado burritos. Their beans and rice are the best!! Rice has big chunks of potato & carrots. The breakfast burritos are soooo good (eating one right now!)...someone else mentioned they are dry...just load it up with some of their fresh salsa or hot sauce, and there you go! I love that this place gives you free chips, free hot carrots, free cucumbers and lime, in addition to their salsa. Gualberto's is ALWAYS packed at lunch time. This is probably the best Mexican food you can get in the immediate area for most things, although I do prefer the al pastor from Palomino's. The staff is friendly, and the ingredients are significantly better than its nearest neighbor. Be forewarned, however, as the parking lot is quite terribly small and there is also a Jamaican food place, a Korean BBQ place, and a Japanese restaurant I believe in the same shopping area. A bonus is the free chips and salsa bar, which is seeming to become the norm in this area of town lately. read more

One of my favorite Mexican places in town! Yes, I said it, this little hole in the wall is one of the best. I love the marinated carrots and free chips and salsa. Bean tosadas are great. The chilaquiles are the best I've had in SD, but be warned that the green ones are really hot. The portion is so big (and comes with rice and beans) that I usually eat it for breakfast and lunch. Don't let the lack luster appearance ambiance hold you back from giving this place a try. I was in for breakfast and had a burrito the size of my head. Surprisingly the "free chips and dips" I had chuckled about appearing in other reviews were out for breakfast too.. and you know what, they're great! The salsa and other dips seemed fresh and very well done. A great little snack while you wait. My bacon, egg, bean, burrito was huge and very tasty. Save your coffee order for somewhere else though. I'm not too picky with coffee, but I had to dump the swill out and top up elsewhere. Communication with the front counter was difficult. maybe i shouldn't admit this but i probably eat here at least once a week, sometimes more. what? it's close to work and it's inexpensive so it's hard to say no. normally i don't do taco shop chicken. something about the texture/flavor that i can't explain but i dig the pollo asado from here. so much that 95% of the time, i order a pollo asado burrito. with cheese. oh man, good stuff! gualberto's burritos are huge. if i'm being good, i'll split that sucker in two and eat one half for lunch and the other half for dinner. when i'm feeling gluttonous, i eat 3/4 of the thing, think about how that last quarter won't be good later, contemplate throwing it out, and decide that i'd rather be uncomfortably full for much of the afternoon than waste that yummy chickeny goodness. hurts. so. good. ha. i'm not a fan of the salsas here but they have a vat of freshly pickled peppers--sliced jalapenos and thinly sliced onions tossed with black pepper and quite possibly a splash of vinegar. this concoction makes up for the lack of tasty hot sauces ten times over. the rice here is another favorite. it doesn't taste like typical spanish or mexican rice. 1) there's no tomato. 2) it's got carrots in it. i think they cook it in chicken broth. whatever it is, it's super tasty and pleases my palate. read more
