I normally do not venture out from my favorite Mexican restaurants just because I know what to expect but when my husband and I came to this shopping plaza we noticed Gualbertos. Because it was Thursday they were having a special for their street tacos and we thought hey, why not? When we went in we were greeted by the cashier and, their menus are extensive definitely lots of options to choose from. The restaurant itself was really cozy and inviting lots of seating inside and two tables ouside. I was so glad we decided to check them out, we ended up getting 3 tacos, two carne asada and one carnitas for me. They really hit the spot, they were perfect in size and so flavorful. We ended up order a burrito for us to share when we got home and that was equally delicious. Will be coming back to try out their carne asada fries! read more

They don't serve the biggest carne asada burrito in town, and definitely not the cheapest either, but Gualberto's delivers a solid version. The carne isn't dry, the tortilla has just the right amount of color to it, and I'm a sucker for a place that gives you bottles of salsa when you dine in. One red, one green, and you can slather that carne with as much as you'd like. It's a 4 star for the price and size of the burrito but if you have some flex with what you're craving they have some very reasonable specials each day of the week. read more

Nice quaint spot next to Marshall's in shopping center on university Ave. The young man at the counter was very pleasant great service & paid attention to detail. Tried Pollo Asada Fries comes with pico, guacamole, sour cream & cheese. I requested beans added as well. It was served on shoestring potatoes with plenty of Pollo, tasty & not too little or too much. Although throwing the beans on top as an after thought was hilarious as it covered everything that was placed on top of the fries. Daughters got carne asada mini tacos, bean & cheese burrito & rolled tacos with cheese only. No complaints but still different taste than #2 in Kearny Mesa. The street tacos are legit delicious and on Tuesday's and Thursdays they are priced almost as cheap as they are in TJ at $1.75 each! Even though I lived in the neighborhood for several decades, it was only recently that I took notice of this shop and have sampled their street tacos a couple of times. The tacos were splendid, the shop was well maintained, attractively decorated and the customer service was of a higher level than one usually encounters of late. However, this late morning having dropped off my wife in the shopping center and on a whim I decided to treat myself to take out breakfast burrito. The friendly attendant recommended the sausage burrito at my prompting. I got charged more than the $10 listed on the board menu but I was in an unusually good mood and let it pass. When I got home, I unwrapped the burrito, peeked inside the hefty flour tortilla in gustatory anticipation, only to find to my horror the wrap was largely a bean burrito with some eggs, a little cheese and one link split in two chunks. I tried to eat some - the decent salsa made it passable - but the enjoyment was lost. Gave my dog some and threw more than half away. A proper breakfast burrito should be composed of eggs, potatoes, cheese, onions & peppers and some type of protein. Maybe I should have read the fine print instead of relying upon the recommendation. Needless to say I won't be returning to Gualberto's if I crave a breakfast burrito in the future. read more

I was disappointed :/ I ordered carne fries and some asada y pollo street tacos. Service was super friendly. The establishment is very clean and has enough space to order and lot feel like your standing on top of people. Went to open the container for the fries and had high hopes! But when I bit into the carne asada fries, the flavor was really lacking even though it looked soooo beautiful and delicious. Tacos weren't bad but not special. My husband and I came to this taco shop for taco Tuesday . They were a dollar something each . We got pastor, carne asada and cabeza.. they were all delicious except the carne asada was a little bland. But yea the rest was really good . They gave us a lot of meat . The young cashier was very friendly and super helpful. We ate there. The cashier brought our food to us along with 2 big bottles of hot sauce . The hot sauces were really good and spicy! I came here curiously after going to the the gym next door and being a taco fiend wanted to try out local taco shops during my visit in San Diego and let me tell you. This small whole in the wall taco shop is some of the best tacos I've had yet in San Diego. The prices are affordable and the menu is vast, but the best part is that they offer specials on street tacos every Tuesdays and Thursdays at $1.25 per taco. Now for that price, you simply can't beat it. For street tacos, I highly recommend the Al Pastor then the Carne Asada tacos. The street tacos are perfect in size. Bite sized two bite tacos garnished with onions, cilantro, and their house made guacamole sauce. When you order tacos make sure to ask for their sauces too if not provided. They offer a red spicy chipotle sauce as well as a green jalapeño sauce. Both are fantastic with the tacos. The perfect addition to the tacos without being too spicy. The tacos also come with a roasted and salted pepper on the side as a palette cleanser after every bite that pairs very nicely with the tacos, but mind you it is quite spicy if you eat the seeds. Pictured are: Al Pastor, Carne Asada, and Carnita tacos with their hibiscus aqua Fresca. On Tuesdays all this was $11. So much value for the amount of food and flavor you're getting. Would highly recommend!! Also the service is phenomenal as well. For being such a small restaurant that's more catered to casual sit down or grab and go, the workers are very kind as they bring out your food to you. Very clean atmosphere, and you can tell the owner just loves what she does and wants to take care of people that come into her family restaurant. I highly recommend getting anything off the menu. I personally had the California burrito and shredded beef taco. My partner had the Thursday Taco special which is $1.45 for 1 street taco and you have 4 to choose from! I ordered a carne asada taco with rice and beans and a champurrado. The champurrado was spot on and perfect for the chilly weather. Their indoor seating is still closed so I sat outside at one of their two available tables. The taco was good as were the rice and beans but you really can't go wrong with ordering anything here. Wife and I are regulars here. Food is hit and miss. Service is pretty good. The food is tasty, especially love the way they put potatoes in the rice. Reason it's hit or miss is because, for some inexplicable reason, the food is sometimes served cold!! Why?? Sometimes is piping hot and delicious and sometimes cold! When it's nice and hot we eat there. When it's cold we ask for a box and take it home for the microwave. Of course it's not the same in the microwave due to the salads on the dishes getting ruined, sour cream ruined, ect, but better than cold. I had a great place of "Huevos a la Mexicana" which is basically scrambled eggs with chopped tomatoes, onions, and serrano peppers. The meal came with Mexican rice and refried beans and four piping hot corn tortillas for $7 and some change if I remember correctly. The eggs were well scrambled and seasoned. They came with just right amount of tomatoes, onions, and especially serrano peppers so not to overwhelm. The scrambled tasted great and was good for making breakfast tacos with the corn tortillas. The rice tasty but a little on the sticky side in a few places. The beans were refried and well cooked and seasoned. Next time I have to remember to ask for Cotija cheese on them rather then yellow cheddar. I was please that they offered four tortillas. They do not have a salsa bar so you have to ask for salsa or they offer it to you. The deep red salsa made from fire roasted peppers was very good and the green one was mild with some acidity to it. I've been going here since I was a kid. I'm in my mid 20's now! The food quality is always consistent and it's great! This was one of the places I was glad to hear that survived the Pandemic. I might be a bit bias due to nostalgia but it's always great to eat here due to the taste and how economic the prices are. This taco shop saved me during college when I went to SDSU when I needed a meal to last meal the entire day. Carne Asada Fries, Carne Asada Burrito, Rolled Tacos, any of the street tacos and fish tacos are some of my go-to's here. As I started to order the lady at the counter she was not understanding my order. I asked her for a carne asada quesadilla, plain only meat and cheese only and insisted on charging me for the super quesadilla.(9.99) when I should've just been charge 7.70 for a plain quesadilla. Then I asked if they can put french fries in my burrito instead of potatoes for my California burrito with only cheese, sour cream and guacamole. And I got nothing but cheese. I asked the guy that helped me get my food is everything was how it needed to be because when she repeated the order it made no sense to me but if she only knew what she was doing everything would've came out fine and I would be doing this review. I went here this evening and decided to get something which is my favorite. Carne asada fries with a side of guacamole and cheese, I mean who can't resist extra guacamole and cheese . The guacamole is more on the home made unflavored side. Kinda bland like it's missing flavor. The sour cream tastes very watered down, but the pico is spot on with the onion and fresh cilantro. I feel that's what saved this dish with the pico and also the hot sauce. The carne is seasoned well and they give you a nice portion of meat. The fries were ok but I think one of my fries was not cooked all the way through . I still got that raw potato crunch you would get when it's not done ...
