An unexpected flight delay landed our party of four in a hotel near JFK Blvd on a Tuesday night. Hungry by 9:00 PM, we stumbled into Guanatos Grub, and it turned out to be the highlight of an otherwise tiring travel day. The Vibe & Service For a Tuesday night, the place was surprisingly jumping. We walked from a nearby hotel, and a quick "Pro-Tip" for travelers: while it's technically a short walk, there is a total lack of sidewalks. You'll find yourself navigating a maze of parking lots to get there, so keep your eyes peeled. Inside, we were greeted by an unexpected karaoke night. While the vocal talent was... questionable, the energy was infectious. People were clearly having a blast, making for an odd but highly entertaining atmosphere. Despite the crowd, the small service staff (just two people) was impressively efficient and friendly. The Food: A Taste of Guadalajara It's important to note that this isn't your run-of-the-mill Tex-Mex joint; the name "Guanatos" is actually a nickname for Guadalajara, and the menu stays true to those Jalisco roots. * Chips & Salsa: They serve their salsa warm here--a traditional touch from central Mexico. If you aren't used to it, #NoSurprises; it's mild, flavorful, and a great starter. * Tacos Dorados (3.75/5): These were a standout. These are folded corn tortillas filled with cheese, fried, and topped with carnitas. They come "drowned" in a delicious tomato sauce (a signature of the region) with pickled onions and lettuce. The carnitas was a touch on the dry side, but the sauce saved the day. * Guac and Chips (3.75/5): A solid version blended with pico de gallo. It's prepared a bit differently than the chunky styles often found elsewhere, but very fresh. * Chicken Fajitas (4/5): These featured large, juicy slices of grilled chicken smothered in cheese over a bed of well-seasoned veggies. One regret: I didn't pull the trigger on their famous Torta Ahogada. It's their signature "drowned" sandwich, but it felt like a bit much for a late dinner at 9:00 PM. In hindsight, I definitely should have gone for it! The Drinks To wash down the meal, I opted for a Dos Equis. It arrived ice-cold and refreshing--exactly what was needed after a day of airport stress. The Verdict If you're stuck near the airport and want something more authentic than a hotel burger, Guanatos is a must-visit. It's a bit of a trek through parking lots to get there, but the regional flavors and the lively local scene make it well worth the effort.

    Authentic Mexican restaurant!!

This was our quick meal after we landed at IAH. We had the carne asada y chorizo skillet, wich came with steak, mexican sausage, onions, and jalapeno pepper. Served with a side of guacamole, pico de gallo, tortiillas, rice and beans. For me, the steak flavor was a bit bland and the texture was just ok. I liked the grilled sausage though! A decent quick stop when you've just landed and are craving for Texas Mexican food.

The location wasn't bad. We walked in, were seated quickly... near the restroom... Like right next to the door to the men's restroom in a near empty restaurant... eww..but ok. We were greeted by what seemed to be a very "high" server who could barely keep her eyes open. We ordered house margs, which were delicious. After watching the bartender play on his phone for 10mins or more...we got our drinks... 20 mins later... chips and salsa. I understand that every place has a signature salsa, but I personally just didn't care for it. It tastes like a light colored marinara sauce.. not bad, just didn't care for it. I ordered chicken flautas. It came out quick and the taste is meh to say the least. Presentation was nice.. but didn't ask for guac but whatever.. Honey ordered enchilada verdes. He said they had good flavor and very hot (heat)! He was satisfied overall but agreed it wasn't the best either. I,personally wouldn't recommend it. Pictures are attached.

The food is delicious, the best I've had in a very long time. The margaritas are good also. The owner & staff are very friendly too! If I'm Ever back in Houston this will be my go to place!

I'll start this by saying that the only reason they received 3 stars is because the salsa was served warm and the guacamole was super fresh and almost rivaled muy cuñados. The hostess/server had a very impatient look and attitude with a borderline outright rudeness to her as of we were interrupting her from something more important than her job which just happen to be her phone. I was happy to see the chips were made fresh, but they actually tasted like they were on the verge of being stale. And that carried over into the nachos which were absolutely NOT worth the almost $17! They barely had any cheese on them and the cheese wasn't melted, but what made it worse was the fact that they were not even warm. My sister's quesadillas were actually very good which were basically the nachos just in a tortilla sans beans. Our bill came out to just under $48 for nachos, quesadillas and 2 Dr. Peppers seems a bit steep, but it's also right by the airport. I really can't say that I recommend this place.

I write a few reviews when I feel a restaurant deserves recognition, if they're horrible-review. Guanatos has reset my life long bar for authentic Mexican food tonight. I have never had such an amazing experience from what I figured would be at best your average near airport hole in the wall quick stop near hotel/airport restaurant. In short there is no good Mexican restaurant left in my book anymore- this is it. So here we go.... -Friendly service- check! -Warm fresh salsa and homemade chips- check! -Steak marinated you could cut it with a fork, and the chorizo was so perfect with NATURAL casings, balanced spice and just flat out PERFECT- CHECK! -Tortillas homemade so perfect with a hint of salt, excellent balance CHECK! -And the sauces 1- habernero 2- jalepeno with a crema base. He said the habernaro was hot and it was- had one that way and the other two perfect with the jalepeno just FABULOUS! Wow.. just wow

Brand new place, if it's not brand new it definitely looks brand new. Beautiful, clean restaurant and we definitely recommend!! Service was great, food was great, but what really tied it all and made it a "core memory" for us was the Karaoke!! We will be back and we loved every minute!! Drinks and food were flavorful and great portions, but also Karaoke? Yes please!! Had the BEST time with a friend I hadn't seen in 20 years, this was perfect

Waiting for a flight to land so we decided to try this restaurant. Food was on point, service was prompt and the place was clean. Would recommend this place for good Mexican food.

Great Mexican, unique menu - standards but also unique dishes too. Flaming queso fundido. Very clean restaurant and service very friendly. Highly recommended.

Absolutely amazing experience! The energy and atmosphere were top-tier from the moment we arrived. The service was outstanding -- the waitresses and waiters were incredibly attentive, friendly, and genuinely cared about our experience. The food was a solid 10/10, easily some of the best we've had. Visiting from Tampa, FL, and this spot is a must-visit. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!

A boring bowl of soup that had no flavor !! Along with having to chop up everything and had to add a ton of salt

Definitely would not recommend this NOT Authentic mexican restaurant . Which they advertise it as authentic . We ordered a soup and Birria Tacos . First off the prices are outrageous $18 for a soup that you have to chop up due to laziness in the kitchen and add your own flavor ( salt etc) . Very very bland taste . Also the rice that came with it was flavorless . We took home the rest so the dog could try and eat it . Also ordered. Birria tacos that cost $18 for 3 tacos no sides and the tacos did have a some what good taste but if you have ever had this type of taco that I didn't get a picture of it was lame like Taco Bell made these . Honestly Jack in the box I would say can make these better and for a lot cheaper . Service was terrible a manager or someone came to the table to ask us how the food was and we told them and nothing was done or even a compensation of any sort. After I finished my plate the lady picked my plate up and spilt Birria sauce on the table that splattered on my shirt and pants . If you know the sauce it stains . I'm giving the 1 star for ambiance . Very nice establishment but it seems they spent more time on making the place look inviting than spending it on finding a great cook !! All and all $45 and very disappointing. Don't waste your money . Oh and the Dog didn't even want the soup when we got home .

For drinks, my husband and our friends tried some of the margaritas from their large and unique margaritas menu, as well as their hibiscus agua fresca. All of the drinks were very pretty and it seemed like everyone enjoyed them, too! We started with their chips and salsa trio, which we all really liked. The chips were on the thicker side, but were crispy and not stale or chewy at all. Each of the salsas were quite different, and two were served warm, which we really liked! For the price, I'd consider getting the chips and salsa as a non-negotiable, honestly. For entrees, we tried the enchilada rojas, chilaquiles verde w/ chicken and beef, birria barbacoa ramen, and huaraches. My husband felt like his ramen could have included more meat, but aside from that everyone really enjoyed what they ordered. The highlight was probably the desserts, though! We got a quatro leches and two ordered of their giant and amazing churros. Both were incredibly tasty and reason enough to return for another visit in the future!

It definitely is enough for 2. The meat melts in your mouth. EVERYTHING is better quality than here. Teo charged $1.50 for perhaps 4 or 5 slices of lime to make the happy hour margaritas made with a gross mix drinkable. That's outrageous. It reminds me that I had stopped going long ago when they charged extra for onions on enchiladas. Come on. You don't charge extra for chopped onions! We have had our eyes on the 5-course Chef Tasting Menu for $49 + the optional beverage pairing for $30. The experience felt more than fair for the price, especially by Houston standards. Each course felt thoughtful and slightly boundary-pushing, yet really approachable. We were also heavily drawn to the tuna tartare starter, masa cornbread, and tres leches. The wine and drink parings were perfect and not too fruity. Chicken tortilla soup (3.5/5) - it was a bit salty for me but I am not a salt person so most things are salty to me; everyone else said it was tasty, there were tons of shredded chicken, avocado pieces, tortilla strips Fajitas - combo (4/5) - chicken was seasoned well and the beef (medium rare) was perfection and so tender and juicy, mexican rice was fluffy, and normally I would pass on the beans and get extra rice but my coworker suggested the charro beans and wow, that was a win - the seasoning was great, there were chunks of meat and the texture was nice, the only thing that could have been done better is the flour tortillas - they over-charred them making them too crispy and left them with a burnt taste. A couple of people got the elote salad and raved about it. So that will be a next time try. Def will be back. Everyone enjoyed their meals and some even ordered food to go. Would recommend.
