I just want to thank all the staff and Dr Ursitti! Yesterday, May 27, 2023, was a very difficult day. My precious fur baby, Sabastian, was not well and needed medical attention. My usual veterinary was closed for the holiday and other veterinary practices said they were booked and could not squeeze us in. Finally, I was directed to Guardian. I believe it was Divine intervention! They were very busy but took us right away. The compassion and genuine concern given by everyone was overwhelming! Inspite of their being extremely busy they all took time to listen and to treat my Sabastian as if he were their own, showing him much respect and dignity to the very end. Not once was an attitude given nor did I feel we were being given the "bum's rush". What was also impressive was overhearing phone calls being made to others to let the people know they were running a little behind along with alerting those in waiting area of the same dilemma. A lot can be learned by the human medical emergency care by observing the professionalism and genuine care given by the folks at Guardian on this very hard and sad day for me. Words cannot truly express my gratefulness and overall feeling of being blessed to have had the opportunity to experience the ultimate compassion and care given to my Sabastian in his final hours and to me. Our dog wound up with kennel cough that worsened in the middle of the night on a recent trip to NY to see family. The tech and doctor were terrific and our dog was diagnosed correctly. He was given meds and within a couple hours was doing much better. We are so thankful they were there and able to help us at 6am. read more

i have had positive experiences there up until the nightmare with Dr john i think his name was. Brought my cat in with breathing issues ...when i got there they took her. i explained she was a formal feral rescue and does not do well with people other than me or animals. they left me in the examining room and a tech came in and said she was breathing fine and that they would examine her once another patient a dog was completed. Several minutes later the doctor came in and told me that she was dying and couldn't breathe as she got stressed with another animal in the area they were examining her ....and and they couldn't sedate her cause she probably just die anyway . this was exactly what he said to me ....I started crying and he looked annoyed. I asked him if he could bring her to me. He went out, came back, literally five seconds later and said she's dead and they couldn't even examine her then they charged me $180. they handed to me dead in a towel i held her and cried ...when i asked for a box for her (as was done in the past)They threw her in a box and I proceeded to check out at the desk $180 for nothing... ....now please keep in mind. I have a lot of animals that I've brought to them in emergency situations and we were always treated very professionally and compassionately, and when I've had animals that had to be put to rest, they were wrapped beautifully and gently and placed in a beautiful box and we were given a little keepsake of their paw print and fur. this last experience was so traumatizing. The vet techs were kind but seemed confused ... literally my animal died alone with strangers. I'm just not quite understanding what happened? I'm not saying they could've saved her and I'm sure there was an underlying issue. It was just a manner in which the vet treated my cat I know they took her out in the examining area with the dog that they were treating and that caused her to have a heart attack, but I'm not really sure I just felt there was no compassion and the vet openly admitted to me he didn't even get a chance to examine her and they still charged me $180. she literally died alone with strangers. i've been crying for days ..the guilt i have for not telling them to let her stay with me until the examining room was free of stressors for her as she was already in distress. i'm hoping there was a logical reason but it's sickening to me. I had had so many positive experiences there that just this was such a kick in the stomach ..so horrible. Then they just handed her to me dead in a towel. i had to ask for a box. they asked if i wanted them to cremate her i said no im taking her home. please tell me how you just handed my dead pet to me just wrapped in a towel? Why did I have to ask for a box and then you threw her in a box and then I had to ask for you to please wrap her up for me?? please please make this make sense to me this never happened like this before with any animal I've ever had veterinary service ever treated us so poorly. there was zero compassion. i'm sincerely writing this review because there were so many times it was different there. I'm not sure if it was all new people a new vet or a new system or policy, but it was heartbreaking and I am just hoping that you guys go back to the way it used to be not very long ago. Maybe that vet needs sensitivity training and maybe policy and procedure wasn't followed ..idk. i'm just so heart broken and disappointed in them. read more

My friend's little Yorkie had a stroke at home. Called them and went in last night at 8pm. Waited about a half hour till the tech checked her out. Then another half hour before the vet saw her. The little Yorkie was suffering and in pain. The vet wanted to run an x-ray and do blood work which was estimated to be about $900(expensive). They did the x-ray and the vet saw it was a massive tumor which was pushing up against her organs. Instead of recommending to put the por little dog down, which would have been the humane thing to do, he said she was ok to go home. Went home, the dog ate but was disoriented, breathing heavy, and fell going down the stairs. We called them back and told them what happened and brought her back. We returned to the place at about 11:40pm. Told them, and they made us wait about an hour and a half. The dog kept breathing heavier. When they came out to the car and told us they were ready for the little Yorkie; she had another stroke. Ran in with her, my friend followed. They met us at the exam room to take her in the back. They brought her back to the exam room, she looked dead. They said she was alive. They gave her the shots and it was over. The little Yorkie suffered till the end. Ended up costing more time and money because the place didn't want to do the humane thing. Veterinarians are supposed to try to help save your pet, but also do what is best for your pet even if it involves putting your pet down to eliminate the suffering and pain of your pet. It's a very dramatic, exhausting, and expensive thing that happened to both the owner and pet. read more

I literally can't not fathom how people have not given this clinic 5 stars. Not only were they available for my pet emergency, they took him in ASAP. They were so compassionate, they had empathy and above all gave my pet the BEST care . Dr. Ursitti and staff were amazing . I recommend them to everyone . I wish she could be my pets full time vet. Coming from California with a lot to choose from, I found myself freaking out trying to make a decision on what 24/7 emergency vet to take my fur baby to. I decided to stay more local before I traveled any further and decided on Guardian since there's decent reviews and they participate with ScratchPay. We had to wait about 2 hours since there was another patient in critical condition, but that wasn't an issue to us since our boy wasn't in life-threatening conditions. The reception was nice, the vet tech was very informative and gentle, and the vet was as well. The vet (I don't remember her name) gave us a lot of different options/home remedies on how to treat our dog's wounded and infected paw. They quickly treated him & prescribed him medicine at a reasonable price (keep in mind that emergency pet care is a convenience, So their prices will obviously be a bit higher than your typical primary vet). Overall we left feeling very satisfied with the service and grateful that our dog received adequate care. I definitely would recommend this emergency clinic if you are in desperate need of care, especially on a Sunday. Thank you Guardian Vet Emergency for relieving our anxiety and helping our fur baby heal ! & to those that are reading this, please keep in mind that vets, vet techs, and receptionists are doing their absolute best to treat everyone's pet in a timely manner. This place is a nut house. I had a surgery scheduled for one of my pups with Dr Hart. They are confusing and I just got out of the phone with Dr Hart and it was the most weird experience I ever had. I thought I was dealing with some professional people but turns out that they are a bunch of self centered group of people. I don't know what's wrong with them but I'm certainly not going back. If you have options go somewhere else. You will be much happier. Btw Dr Hart the way you treat your clients/ patients I'm not sure you will be in business much longer. You guys deserve 0 stars. A very bizarre dysfunction reigns at the emergency desk with staff (clerical, techs and MD's) chasing their tails and unprofessional familiarity with each other on full display.. while anxious pet owners have to sit by and hope for the best. Steer clear - We went there with a 13 y/o 12lb dog presenting with a softball sized ruptured tumor and were sent home to research "low cost surgical options" to avoid their suggested approach to have a specialist operate for an estimated 5k. Doctor recommended that it was not appropriate for us to consider euthanasia despite my request to proceed and returned the dog to us in a towel without cleaning or dressing the wound. She told us to let the dog rest on a tile floor at home for easy clean up while we looked for someone to operate. We followed up at a local animal hospital asking for X-rays and bloodwork and an opinion on possibly operating. They compassionately confirmed what we had known which was that the prognosis was grim. Her tumor had grown from the size of a pea in March and was assumed to be aggressively malignant. Given her quality of life and the likelihood that she would not live much longer even with heroic efforts, they did not see it necessary to do any testing and agreed that euthanasia was the most humane approach. Under the circumstances, we called OCAES to complain and request a refund. They jerked us around and made excuse after excuse for their unacceptable service and grossly negligent advice. All with no genuine concern to resolve the situation. The charge is now under dispute with my credit card company. My advice is to avoid this place at all costs. read more

We couldn't have been happier with our Sheltie's care in the skillful and kind hands of Dr. Anastasiou and the staff at Guardian Emergency Vet Care.  With much fear and trepidation, we took our 5-year-old Sheltie to Guardian Emergency Vet Care. She had already been treated the day before at a local veterinarian for probable Advil poisoning. She seemed to be recovering well until 1:00 Sunday morning when she started shaking, panting, and having diarrhea. Since there was no vet on duty where we had taken her the night before, we went to Guardian. We were greeted by a kind receptionist who took all the vital information and swept us into the examining room. In no time, Dr. Anastasiou came in, got more information, took some tests, and returned with two proposed care plans. He explained each and listened to our concerns. When we decided on the treatment plan, the vet tech, receptionist, and Dr. Anastasiou worked together on our Sheltie. It is evident that the three professionals enjoy working together and hold each other in high regard. We were able to bring our dog home with a comprehensive medical plan. Shortly after arriving home, we received an email outlining our visit, the test results, and what we should watch for. Avoid, avoid, avoid. Took my cat who suddenly could not walk on his right foot although there was no apparent wound. After almost 3 hours Vet looked at the cat and without even touching the paw said "it's swollen" (Duh). This "exam" cost $200. She left the room and a vet tech came in 10 minutes later with a $2800 breakdown of treatment cost if we proceeded - (part of the bill was for "dressing of wound" even though there was no wound - the vet didn't even examine the paw). Couldn't afford this ridiculous pricing. I left - $200. poorer and no treatment. My poor baby had to wait to see my regular vet - total cost at regular vet was $265. This is part of a corporate system, the vets are not private practitioners, but employees of a corporation which sets the prices. Sad. read more

I used them years ago and it was a good response. Recently I had a Shih Tzu that was in distress due to Kidney issues and even though they closed at 7 AM and I got there at 6:10 AM, they would not see him because they were in the middle of discharge. I have no idea if their services are good anymore, but if they had any empathy, they would have seen my dog. He had to be put down anyway but the fact they would not even see him bothers me. I'm sick to my stomach what they did to my husband on Dec 3. 2021. At 1230 a.m my beautiful shepherd was brought in due to complications following surgery. She was very ill and we knew it was the end. We were so heartbroken. This bitch, yes I said bitch, would not take our Care Credit MasterCard. My poor baby is laying on her bed on the floor at the emergency so called hospital suffering while she's arguing with my husband. She told my husband she would call the cops on him. All because he was trying to pay with a card that is specifically for vets. How could you be so cold when we were going through hell. She just didn't want to put it through. Money hungry business. If you have no compassion for animals you shouldn't be in this field. I'm sad that my babies last breath was at Guardian Veterinary Emergency in 211 Middletown NY 10941. I re-downloaded Yelp just to leave this review. Our Yorkie became very bloated and refused to eat. We immediately looked into this and realized the issue could be severe. We headed straight to Guardian as it's the nearest place to our home. The vet working on Sept 3rd at 6pm was not only unhelpful, but uncaring and completely uninformative. Google was WAY more helpful. Please do your self a favor and save your pets life by avoiding this place at all costs. I didn't actually take my pet here, but I called because I had feared my rabbit may have broke his paw. So I called and asked the woman who answered the phone if I can bring my rabbit in, as I suspect a broke paw. She bluntly responded they don't take "exotics". Which is fine they don't take them, and so I asked if she could recommend who. She quickly rattles off a name of a place in NJ which I have not heard of and I asked if she could provide the number to me. She says "I do not". And the rest of the conversation posed no help as well. When you're calling an animal hospital late at night, it is obvious something is wrong and you are worried about your pet. The person answering should be compassionate, kind, speaking CLEARLY, and above all, trying to be helpful. Which she was not, whatsoever. She sounded annoyed, frustrated, monotonous and spoke VERY fast like she was in a rush from the moment she answered the phone. I understand we all have days and things are especially tough now, I feel for you. You don't always have to be in the best of mood but if you are choosing to be in this career be AT LEAST be HELPFUL. If you recommend a place you should also have the number somewhere or know how to find it for someone. They know you are calling about a potentially seriously situation and time is very limited when it comes to an ailing animal. I'm extremely disappointed and upset at how she handled my call, you think I was calling a department store asking if something was in stock. I've called places before in emergency situations and although the facility I called could not provide service to my situation they quickly researched the number of a place who could or already had that number on hand (BECAUSE it's a place they typically recommend. They were prepared and probably get those questions a lot). That's how you help someone. Almost everyone has a computer in front of them nowadays. And sure I researched on my end which I had of course am capable of doing (bit besides the point especially) but it turned out I misheard the name and I researched a different place entirely than what she gave me (I thought for SURE I heard what she said and that is why I did not ask her to spell the name of the place). Someone i texted asking for help suggested the "correct " place and I'm thinking oh my gosh I definitely heard something different. Thank Goodness he helped. Again. Just would have been helpful if she gave me the number. So this took so much longer than it should have. I took him to that recommended animal hospital, Oradell in NJ (I originally heard ORVILLE ) where they were very compassionate and helpful and treated him well. read more

This is now owned by a totally different company and is completely different. Please do not use the old review for Guardian, It was Orange County Animal Emergency Service. The current owners get a 5 star review. This was a breath of fresh air with the new owners. Totally fabulous experience.. When I was there when it was Orange County Animal Emergency Services years ago, it was horrible, They wanted tons of money for anything. Had to wait 1.5 hours for the vet because he was ....home. Worst part is they recommended putting him to sleep which was just crazy. When I got to Guardian tonight, The NEW owners, I got taken in right away as soon as I arrived and there were others in the parking lot whose animals were already inside, so it was busy. Maybe 20 minutes later Dr John called and told me that my dog seemed very healthy and his vomiting might just be a disagreement with something he ate. He told me they could do xrays and blood work, but he said that he was sure they would come back neg and be a waste of money. It was refreshing that he did not push anything at all, offered a shot for vomiting and nausea, if I wanted, but was just an option not totally needed. With a total of 10 pets, I am always at the vet. Most somehow jack the bill up to $300 every single time you go with many unneeded things, like injections vs pills which are 20% of the cost of a shot. If I have an emergency again, I will absolutely not hesitate to bring my animal there. Very professional pleasant staff, very professional doctors. I am thrilled there is new owners now that care about your pet and your money. I would give them more than 5 starts if I could read more

Was here twice. The staff (not vet) is absolutely horrendous. The idea of smiling is beyond them, blank stares seem to be the norm. They're not polite, and have absolutely no patient skills. I'm talking about the both of the girls I dealt with who were taking turns? at the front desk. First time we were there there was one emergency before us. There's also one vet at a time in this facility, at least on the weekends. So we had to wait quite a bit to be seen. But the vet that treated our bulldog diagnosed and prescribed correctly according to the specialist we saw when we got back to the city. Second time we winded up here was a nightmare. My bulldog started panting heavily out of nowhere. This becomes very dangerous for a brachycephalic breed. He was obviously in pain/uncomfortable, his tongue was turning purple, but an hour later we were still in the waiting room even though there was no one there. When I asked the front desk how much longer, she proceeded to inform me that the vet was in a "real emergency with a dog that was dying and they were making arrangements to send it to a different facility." Seriously? Why did she feel the need to say this to me? Did she think we were here for a social call? Anyway, when the vet finally saw us, a physical exam didn't reveal where the pain/discomfort was coming from. So she mentioned some tests she wanted to run, walked out, and said she'd be right back. 15, maybe 20 minutes later one of the front desk staff comes in with a bill for the most ridiculous amount (bloodwork, x-rays, etc) that I have to agree and sign for before any testing gets done. The vet still didn't come back so I said I wanted to talk with her (the vet) first. So we wait, and wait, and wait. Guess what, no vet. At this point, we had enough. My husband took our dog to the car (we decided to drive back to the city and got to a real facility (Animal Medical Center) and I paid the bill. Never again. I will sooner drive a little longer than go back to this place. They can't handle multiple emergencies, and their prices are higher than any specialist in Manhattan. They take complete advantage of people worried about their pets. As far as the front desk staff goes, they need to be fired. No one should be in that position if they can't talk to their clients in a humane way. They only got 2 stars because my first experience, while not great with the wait time, was adequate. I would not advise anyone to take their animal to Guardian. They didn't even look at our dog's back and gave us an estimate for $7,000. No x-rays, no scans, just a crystal ball I guess. They told us she was in pain. We put her down. If only I could go back in time! I wish I never went there. I complained about their rude and incompetent behavior to my local vet, but I'm not sure if they are investors or not. I can't even give them a 1. Heart wrenching. We had an emergency at 9:30 pm when our 13 year old "Shepherd mix lost the use of her rear legs and we knew that we had to help her cross the rainbow bridge. They took us in immediately and all of the staff had a caring and comforting presence at such a hard time for us. They let us say goodbye for as long as we needed and gave us privacy. This was a terrible experience from start to finish. Came here because our dog was attacked by another dog and had open wounds on her leg and head. They charged us over $1000 cut her hair and clean the wounds. The price would've been higher if we didn't decline the application of a bandage for $114. That's right. $114 to wrap her leg up in gauze and bandages. On top of the outrageous prices, the doctor was extremely rude when we asked how our dog was doing. I suggest you wait to bring your pet to your normal vet if at all possible. The only reason this place stays afloat is because they're the only place that stays open past normal business hours. read more

On June 5, 2019 at approximately 11:00 pm, my 10 year old German Shepherd, Lola was in distress. My husband noticed her excessive panting, restlessness and her vomiting a "thick white foam." We knew that something was definitely wrong with Lola when she began to whimper (which she NEVER does)! We made the decision to bring her to an emergency vet. Middletown was closest to us and we did not know if she would make it further away. We looked online at the reviews, and were worried...but what are you supposed to do when your baby is very sick? You have to TRUST...just like if you had to go to an E.R. We called to let the staff know that we were coming and got there about 11:30 pm. When we arrived, we were asked for our ID and a credit card and promptly put into an exam room. As were walking in, Lola vomited more "thick white foam," so she was getting worse. The vet on that night was, Dr. Wendy Haumaier. She came in, we explained what was going on and Dr. Haumaier told us that Lola needed an x-ray to see what is going on inside of her. We agreed after they told us the cost. Then, Lola had the x-ray and was soon diagnosed with a "flipped stomach." Lola needed emergency surgery since this was life threatening. Dr. Haumaier fully explained the procedure she would have to perform on Lola and answered all of our questions, even the "not-so-nice" questions. She left us alone to discuss what we wanted to do. And of course, we chose surgery to hopefully save Lola's life. (And yes, the x-ray and surgery were expensive, but owning a pet is a life-long commitment and may be very expensive at times. We are not wealthy, just love our pets like people love their children). We asked if we could see Lola before the surgery began. Soon after she was getting prepped for surgery, Dr. Haumaier brought us in the back to see Lola. Yes, it was heartbreaking to see our always strong and happy girl in pain with many IV's sticking out of her, not knowing if this was the last time we'd see her alive...but you have to TRUST. And trust we did. It was now after 12:30am and my husband and I went home (10 minutes away) during Lola's surgery, which we were told would be long. Dr. Haumaier told us she would call, when the surgery was over...and she did, after 3:00 am. Lola came through the surgery like a champ and now had to have much time heal and recover. We picked her after 7:00 am and brought her to our regular vet, where she remained for a few days and then home for her recovery. It is now two months later and you would never know Lola was close to crossing the rainbow bridge. Lola is back to her being the princess she is, bossing her younger brothers (a French Bulldog and another German Shepherd) around, and showing them who is in charge. I can never thank Dr. Haumaier enough for saving Lola's life, being understanding, focused, knowledgeable and compassionate towards us, during such a difficult time. I wanted to write an update. We brought our two dogs here for porcupine quill removal and never for a second did we think we would not see one of them again. The vet said due to complications from the quills in one of our dogs chest his lung collapsed and he passed away. We are absolutely devastated!! Our other dog is doing ok, but is depressed without his brother. We're still removing quills from him and he may need to go under again to have some deeper quills in his face removed but we will NEVER go to this place again. I've never heard of a dog dying from porcupine quills and truly feel there was malpractice. Our boy was strong, he had the heart of a lion and many more years ahead of him. The treatment that was doled out to our sick dog was horrendous. The vet in question was uncaring, rude and without an iota of compassion or integrity. The vet in question who happened to be of Russian extraction should never be a vet in the Hudson Valley or anywhere. There was no mass, she said there was a mass tumor. My vet in Monticello checked the XRAY on the following day and he was aghast that such unprofessionalism was displayed. It happened on March 4, 20016 and my heart burns with disgust when I see that facility. it should be closed down. I hope that I never have to face any emergency situation with my animals and I implore all dog lovers to keep away from that facility. That is NOT a good place. My heart remains broken up to today and this pain can never be healed.I would give that facility a minus zero rating. Keep away if you love your animals. read more

My experience was nothing short of horrific. I brought my 3 yr old dog in because he was lethargic and in obvious pain. I was asked multiple times if he could've ingested marijuana. I thought it was odd but the way the world is, I assumed it was standard. When the Vet, Katrina Rezunova then suggested that perhaps a friend of my daughter might have "dropped" drugs in the ground, I realized this questioning was serious. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. This awful speculation continued the entire visit. After labs and radiology came back the Vet came back in the exam room and confirmed toxicity with marijuana being the toxin. I was floored. Trying to keep my composure, knowing that losing my mind was not going to help my dog, I demanded a drug test. The girl at the desk told me which one to get and I left for the closest pharmacy. I returned with the test and the Vet and front desk girl administered it. Low and behold, an immediate negative. Still the Vet was questioning the validity test. She was relentless. At that point, I was taking him home. She promised she would take care of him and that she was there all night. I was terrified to bring him home thinking he was in better hands under the eye of a doctor. The next morning, I picked Yogi up with no change in his illness. I brought him straight to my vet who sent me to Flannery immediately. He had a severe case of pancreatitis! He remained at Flannery for 4 days!!! My poor dog suffered the entire time at this "emergency vet". I checked his itemized statement and xrays. They never treated him for anything. Never gave pain medication. He had a temp of 104. The xrays showed an abnormal amount of gas in his belly. My boy was hunched over and was carried out looking worse than when he got there. Dr Rezunova was so convinced that he had ingested marijuana she didn't treat him. She accused me and my 15 year old daughter of having illegal drugs in our house. My daughter was in tears. Dr Rezunova was awful and didn't take care of my dog. It's a terrible place. If they are going to accuse people of illegal drugs they had better have a way to confirm their "clinical" diagnosis. At one point I ask why they weren't calling the police. Nobody had an answer to that question. I've seen numerous reviews of people complaining about similar treatment. Even after she tested him for drugs, she still refused to get passed her initial snap diagnosis. 14 hours my 3 year old pup laid in pain, drooling and with a high fever. I paid them $1600 for nothing and I will be taking them to court! I expect a full refund. read more

We were there in September 2021 and all the one-star reviews pretty much cover it. Rude, money hungry, uncompassionate. They greet you outside with a clipboard and run your card before they allow you to enter with your very sick/in pain/dying pet. I understand them wanting to get paid it is a business after all by why be so grubby and nasty about it? I was charged 139.00 for an antibiotic I never heard of that is online for 35.00, when doxycycline (for a fraction of the cost) would have worked just as well but I was so freaked out by my baby crying in pain...well common sense goes out the window AND THEY KNOW THAT and take full $$$ advantage. I asked her if there was anything cheaper and she said If it was my pet, this is what I would use. She used the phrase "Emergency Vet Pricing", like that is an excuse to overcharge mostly poor people like this? Is it because she works at night? You go to the ER at the hospital at night and those docs are up all night too but do not charge 3X more so what is up with that except thievery? A few reviews here mention a different emergency vet, please research this before going here and being so upset and offended by their horrible service that two months later you are pounding out a one-star review.
