Opened in 1984, the Takara Family established Gulick Delicatessen in Kalihi and is still operated by the family today. It may have started with offering traditional okazuya comfort foods, such as musubi, chow fun, corned beef hash, fried chicken, and eggplant. Workers would purchase these lunch okazu before the start of the workday that would not require refrigeration. Gulick's offerings slowly expanded over the years due to HI's multi-Asian population to include variations of dishes using different meats and veggies, e.g., garlic/mochiko chicken, tempura, sweet sour spareribs, pork lumpia, pinakbet, pork guisantes, lup cheong, etc. (I used to love their Chinese-style char siu riblets; however, they no longer have that.) With about 30 dishes offered daily, it's now considered a cafeteria-style set up where you can choose the food items of individual servings that you want. They also offer set breakfast berntos and plate lunches with rice/noodles, beef/chicken/fish, spam, and tempura. My favorites include the gigantic corned beef hash (yes, way more potato than corned beef, but it's tasty), veggie tempura, furikake spam musubi, gobo, and anything with green beans. Yes, go early, as the popular items sell out. Service by staff in placing your orders and utensils in takeout boxes and collecting payment is quick and efficient. Customers may hold up the line if their favorites are sold out and/or can't decide what to order with so many items available. The store interior is clean and bright, with a no-frills ambiance, as you just walk in and choose your food items from the display table and pay once you reach the end. Hours of operation are: Mon to Fri 5:00a to 3:30p, Sat 6:30a to 3:00p, Sun closed. Named after the street where it's located and also in a residential area, Gulick Delicatessen has about 5 free designated spaces in its private lot to the right of the building. There are also a few free spaces on the street fronting the main entrance. With lots of choices, there is something for everyone. Oftentimes when I don't know what I want for lunch, Gulick Delicatessen is my choice where I can choose what I want, provided that I go early enough before they sell out their items. Support local!

It was in Kalihi and kind of close to this place so decided to drop by just in case they still had a good selection of choices since it was after 12pm...nope! I didn't want to go somewhere else so just ordered a few items that were left. I did enjoy the food I chose and my husband did too. Thought the prices were about the same as other delicatessen's so that's a plus. A friend recommended their fried tofu with green beans so I will come back for that at an earlier time and I'll have more to choose from. This place is located on Gulick Avenue in a residential area. My husband parked across the street from this place. When I crossed the street, I called him to let him know there's a small parking lot on the right of their building...yay!

The food is very tasty won't fail you that department. As texture wise, most of garlic chicken skin was mushy and not crispy...maybe the heat made it soggy. I was able find tidbit crunchy pieces. The broccoli dish had shrimp and tofu ad sopping up the gravy. Broccoli maintained it's nice green color and crunchiness...love that sound! The broccoli dish and chow fun compliments the garlic chicken with their own perfect flavors. Lunch time is filled with dishes galore! Service is friendly and great! Ambiance is bustling with customers, but be able to communicate what you want...come on down! Ciao!

"Roger's can't sell chicken around here, we got chicken places on every block." Cosmo Kramer, Seinfeld Well, certainly not on Gulick Ave. Garlic, Spicy, Shoyu, Fried, and katsu; they got it covered! da Scene: Mondays are rough in town... most Okazuya are closed from Waialae to downtown, gotta head to North School Street to find good stuff. My go to in this part of town is Gulick. da Grub: got 2 bentos and 1 lg. Box of overflow. You got the standards: fried chicken, chow fun/mein, Teri beef, shrimp tempura, ahi Teri & spam. But my add on's make the Bento "deluxe" and enough for a 2nd round later. Add On box: shiso musubi, shrimp and veg. tempura, garlic chicken, and couple hash patties. Mmmmmm! da Service: Long line and but moves pretty good.Ladies are nice and quick, but don't linger too much picking!!

    Okazuya-style food

If you enjoy old-school Okazuya-style spots, Gulick Delicatessen is a solid choice. They offer a huge variety of items, and it's easy to end up with a full plate before you know it. Everything is fresh, reasonably priced, and very nostalgic if you grew up eating this kind of food. Parking can be a mix--there are a few reserved stalls and some street parking nearby, but it can get busy depending on the time of day. Overall, a classic Kalihi stop and worth returning to so you can try more of their options. Support local!

Gulick had been there for the longest time I known. We had business in middle st when we found it mid 70's I could be mistaken when they opened up. Opens at 05:00 am now opens until 3:00pm! Go early their choices of great eats gone in ton time! BBQ Meat or teriyaki beef too salty or marinated in shoyu too long I'm not sure but it goes well with Chowfun noodles not salty at all. Their potato, macaroni salads and namasu are the best tasty salads I know! The large size egg rolls are sold quickly. Goes very well with any order one chooses! Hamburger patties are deli's but today's burnt in the back otherwise edible! Eggplant with pieces of satiated teriyaki beef cut into small parts outmost delicious vegetables stir fry I had in ages! The amount of food given price is right! We shall have it for dinner as well!

I have eaten here since I was a kid and my parents use to take me now I take my kids here food is always prepared fresh and so delicious. They have so much options to choose i can't express how good it is cause you gotta go there and try it and thank me later for having a happy tummy. Service was fast and efficient. The store has a nice kick to it feels like old school.

Potato Tempura , shrimp tempura, nomasu and Saimen noodles so tasty.

Gulick's used to have their egg omelette filled with kamaboko, green onions, and some kind of meat (spam?) folded in with a nice dashi flavor. Lately when I have gone this is what the egg looks like "a fried folded egg" pretty disappointing especially the fact that the price for a piece. On the plus, their service is friendly and the ladies are great and patient when it comes to large orders.

Update on Gulick Deli this morning I stopped to get breakfast for my co-workers . I got there once they opened at 5am and I was the only customer. Normally there always a line , the service was fast and friendly and I ordered 4x the same plate . Garlic chicken, shrimp tempura, chow mein, egg omelette and Musubi . Support local

Good 'ol Gulick where the food is delicious and the service is great! Favorites: teri hamburger, gobo, potato salad Also recommended: spicy chicken (has bones though), tamagoyaki, corned beef hash patty, cone sushi, namasu The only item I can't recommend is the fried tofu with green beans because I once got a batch with really hard pieces. If you do not see something out that you've had before (and they aren't about to close for the day), there's a fair chance the next batch is already being prepared in the back, so just ask and they can often grab it for you. There's also a menu of set bentos to choose from. Parking is limited but there is no dining in, so it turns over quickly.

    $12.88 worth of yummy food!

Wednesday July 9, 2025 I have been coming here for years and I still love it! Park on the street fast kind or in their small private lot of 4-5 cars? The food is good and so many choices to choose from. Service is fast and friendly. I will definitely continue to come back here and to support local businesses.

Spicy chicken, tofu, some of the veggie dishes, noodles, etc.

I wanted to come here because I wanted to try okazuya and you can't get that on the mainland. It's a very casual place. Hours are limited which does make it hard to come here, but it's worth it and close to Waikiki. Ordering is very casual. You have to go up to see what you want. We got a huge variety to try a bunch of things. Chicken: 8/10. Got the shoyu chicken and the spicy chicken. Both were amazing Nishime: 7/10. Unique and not something I eat often but I'm so glad we got it. Tofu: 7/10. Good but nothing special Chow fun: 6/10. Bit bad but nothing stand out Overall, fun and good to try. We had so much that we couldn't finish it all but it's hard to resist when there's so much variety. Cone sushi: 6/10. I like inari and the portion is a decent size but nothing crazy.

Chow funn, ume musubi, nishime and garlic chicken.

I didn't forget as I said i would take pictures of the current menu and I did. I also said that i would try the chirashi and I did. I'm very glad I did. It was very good with fresh fish. I will attempt to name all the sashimi that went into making the chirashi. Forgive me if I'm wrong. Let's start off with the easy one first which would be maguro. Then there's tamago, ebi, hamachi, tako, sake, Tobiko and tai. Oh ok. I understand. Ahi (yellow fish), egg, shrimp, Yellow tail, octopus, salmon, flying fish eggs and red snapper or sea bream. The chirashi comes with Miso soup, edamame, cabbage and pickled onions(?). The place was crowded when we came in. Harder to sit a group of five people. My bowling mates all opted for the lunch box which is a great deal. It comes with everything that I got with my chirashi. You can select 2 choices and a piece of either vegetable tempura or shrimp tempura or 2 pieces of gyoza. I'd recommend the shrimp tempura. All of this for just $22.95. That's a good price for Japanese food and the amount given. My chirashi was $25.95. If you're looking for Japanese food and on a budget, give this place a try. Ask for Cris and tell her the Monday bowlers sent you. She will get a kick out of that. Mahalo gang and have a nice day.

Deep fried tempura of shrimp and assorted veggies in a rice bowl with sauce & hot udon. Very filling and tasty! * Tempura Teishoku. This teishoku had 3 large pieces of fried tempura shrimp and assorted veggies, e.g., carrot, eggplant, green beans, pumpkin, that were light and non-oily. Our teishoku meals came with pickled veggies, cold soba, rice, and miso soup with lots of wakame and radish sprouts. Very flavorful! They also offered a complimentary birthday scoop of ice cream with a dollop of an as a topping, which was refreshing and paired well! * Maguro Tempura Teishoku. Hubby's choice of fried tempura tuna set, and he noted that there were 8 large tender pieces of maguro that was lightly fried and non-oily. Very delicious and filling! * Unagi nigiri. The unagi was so flaky, tender, and light and had the right amount of sauce. Loved it! The presentation of the meals was beautifully plated with real, authentic Japanese small dish bowls and plates. The food was of good quality and very flavorful! Customer service was excellent! Diners are greeted by staff upon entering and thanked when leaving. The old-time servers were very patient, attentive, welcoming, and gracious! Our food orders came out in a timely manner, and the servers, with smiles, frequently asked if everything was okay and if we needed anything else. Hours of operation are: lunch daily from 11a to 2p, dinner from 5p to 9p, closed Wed. Happy hour is from Thurs to Tues from 1:30p to 5p. Good thing I called for lunch reservations at 12:15p on a weekday, which was tha last table available. And the restaurant was packed the entire time that we were there! The decor at this restaurant is definitely old skool. If your dig old skool nostalgia like me, then ya gotta check out Yagura Restaurant!

Another one I was able to cross off my list. I've probably driven by this place hundreds of times…read morebut never tried it. I met a friend who works nearby for lunch. This place is definitely a throwback. You can feel that vibe once you walk through the doors. Quickly got seated and served water and tea (which I really appreciated). Some places don't offer it or don't even have it. The menu is quite extensive. I settled on the Teishoku with Sashimi, salmon and teri beef. They brought out the miso soup (not the kind out of a tube) and the rice before the meal arrived. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the salmon, most places that I go to it's pretty small. I could only eat half of it. The portions sizes for all the dishes were good. I actually had to take home some of the teri beef too. Kind of bummed that I hadn't been to this place 20 years ago. I guess like they say, better late than never. I will be back.

Hiro no Uchi feels like walking into a friend's place for dinner. The restaurant has a homey but…read moretrendy feel and Hiro and his partner are friendly while serving up a delicious omakase. With so many options popping up for omakases I t's hard to choose and often I find nothing stands out, but Hiro serves up carefully crafted pieces that just get better and better. My husband and I enjoyed a rare date night and immediately recommended this place to our friends.

Very pleasantly surprised by this somewhat hidden sushi omakase spot in Chinatown. I've never heard…read moreof this place before, nor the chef, and was invited by a group of friends celebrating a special occasion. I usually pass on sushi omakase outside of Japan nowadays unless the experience is significantly value added. I loved the decor and vibes. Everything seemed very personal and aesthetically kooky, like I was in a trendy yet intimate late night izakaya spot. The seats were a little empty this night but I didn't mind the specialized attention by the chef. There are two times for seating (5:30PM and 8:30PM). We opted for 5:30 seating. There were 14 courses and a complimentary, customized macaron at the end. Definitely wowed from the get-go, loved the attention to detail and chef's run down of ingredients and where he sourced them (a lot from Japan, some local). Ingredients for toppings were creative. Fish was fresh *although some gristle existed on some of my pieces which I didn't love (and a bone in just one). I would say though, the topping ingredients got a little repetitive as the courses progressed. I did not enjoy the miso soup nor the tamagoyaki at the end (the last two courses). Miso soup did not have deep flavor and there was alot of it. The texture and taste of the tomago was not pleasant, a sweet bite of charcoal and black sesame accents. I would say definitely come once for the atmosphere and food. I think the experience is a little more subjective from person to person. It wasn't the cheapest sushi omakase (a little over $200 per person if you gave a generous tip) without drinks. My favorite bites were the Yellow Stripe Butterfish, the Rockfish topped with a strand of seagrape, and the 5-day aged toro topped with gold flakes from Kanazawa, Japan. There is also a hallway and bathroom that connects to a hidden speakeasy operated by the Easy Company. Cute and intimate as well!
