I'm hooked on okazuyas/"delis" hope they never go away (I'm making up for lost time). After the first visit shock of being put on the spot to order, they make the perfect lunch stop with a group of folks that just can't agree. Just be courteous to others if you need time to decide. Staff is efficient, will fill your plate, so shoot off your order without worry. Options vary from day-to-day. Fried foods always have the perfect crunch (currently hooked on their tofu). Shiso musubi is a favorite. Simple pleasure is the hot dog. Heart smart(er) is nishime, but I crave it all. Every time I go I leave realizing there's something I forgot but want to try -- more reason for the next visit. I want to give them 5 stars as I heard from many people it is the best delicatessen in town. I probably went too late The options were limited as I wanted to enjoy it more better. The fried chicken was good even cold. The pickled cucumbers were really yummy. The other options would be average at best to me, They said it is per item then I looked at my pictures I saw they had bento options. Oh well live and learn. I haven't eaten here for a while now and I remember how crappy the parking is especially when it's busy. They have a variety of food selection to choose from. You can either pay by the choices you pick or the 3 preset bentos that they have. I ordered Bento#2 and Bento #3. They all have the same stuff except for one item which will be either a piece of fish, veggie or potato tempura, or shrimp tempura. They all have teri beef, chow mein, rice, fried or shoyu chicken, and spam. The prices range from $11-$13. Overall, the food isn't something that I'd remember or crave for, but still pretty decently delicious with reasonable prices. The staff are fast and friendly. They enforce the social distance and requirement of the face masks and even limiting up to only 5 customers in the store at a time. Parking is trash when they're busy. Great local style deli! Staff is helpful and speedy and all the food is delicious. Tempura is super crunchy and long rice packs so much flavor. Their pork guisantes may be my favorite on island but I'm biased to my father-in-laws style which included chickpeas too. So much to try, you will definitely find something you like. Keep in mind, late in day some things may dry out a bit since sitting under heater but flavors still great. read more

This is our go-to delicatessen on Oahu, and the flavor is always there. Street parking, and usually always busy. Some of my favorite items include their chow fun, fried chicken, pork eggplant, shrimp tempura, and my favorite - their cone sushi. I swear, they have the best on island! The prices seem a little high - somehow my husband seem to spend around 50 for two plates and maybe a side. But, it's always a generous portion and we usually always have leftovers. And if you're lucky, you'll also get to see the food pics, too. I've noticed Nadine C. (aka "Auntie") and Dan O. coming to Gulick Delicatessan (GD) here and been admiring what they've been chomping on. These okazuya's (literal meaning in Japanese - a restaurant that serves side dishes) are pretty cool because you get to customize your plate from a large selection of local comfort foods. Located just off the corner of N School St and Gulick Ave, GD has been serving delicious food for over 40 years. My recent visit here was not my first but it's been YEARS since I last came here. Sadly, GD is not on my way to work but in the opposite direction. But one morning I had this weird dream where I woke up at 430am. The dream was so bizarre that I couldn't go back to sleep so I drove to nearby Mitsuba. But with my luck, Mitsuba was closed and I was craving me some local style sushi. I then thought about Auntie and Dan so I drove here instead. I was so pleased to now notice more parking, especially stalls that are dedicated to GD patrons. It was a little after 5am so it was empty and I was immediately assisted. I already had fried chicken and mac salad on the menu so pretty much I just needed starch. It was hard to skip all of the delicious looking sides but I had the girl pack up 6 tuna takuan musubi, 6 cone (inari) sushi and a roll each of maki and California roll. When it was time to pay, I was alarmed of my total bill that came in just under $40. After paying I drove back home to get ready for work. I ate lunch with my friends at about 1215pm and brought out the sushi. Immediately I noticed the avocado in the California roll had oxidized. It was somewhat disappointing but I'll remember to only get that if I'm going to consume right away. That was a waste of $6.25 on the California roll. Overall, the sushi was a big hit with my colleagues. The cone sushi was so juicy and flavorful. The maki sushi brought back memories of my childhood - - tasted just like how I recall when I ate them as a small kid. The slightly sweetened tuna fish. But my favorite has to be the tuna takuan musubi. It's visually pleasing and I like the crunch from the yellow pickle. It was really hard to pass on the pork eggplant dish. I so wanted to get some of it but because I already had enough food, it'll have to wait for next time. Although my reunited visit at GD was a good but pricey one, I'll definitely be back but not in the immediate future. read more

Disappointed in the vegetable tempura. Why is there fish cake inside when it is labeled vegetable tempura? Just yuck. I don't like fish stuffs and this was just yucky I had to pick out pieces. The tempura was okay a bit hard. The fried chicken had no flavor and a bit dry. The hash was large serving but also bland-no flavor. For the prices. I will not be back. Lacked flavor of any kind a bit of salt would've helped a little I think. $20.00 for two plates feels like I wasted my money. Used to be good not anymore sorry my opinion My husbands shrimp tempura was a small smushed piece of shrimp. Potato was tiny more batter than anything and all flavorless. Just terrible read more

National Eat What You Want Day is celebrated every year on May 11th... I usually eat what I want everyday - LOL! However, this day made me come to the conclusion that I prefer comfort foods. It's more satisfying and beneficial (to me) than anything else! Mondays seem to be a common day off for local places. Luckily, Gulick Delicatessen was open! I chose to takeout here because my friend, Dan O., is a frequent customer (24 check ins). He knows comfort food and I trust him. #truth First of all, I was really happy with the free parking. There were even spaces on the street! I guess I arrived at a good time - in between the going to work people and the lunch crowd. I was the only customer at 9am! The interior of the shop was surprisingly clean! I expected a hole-in-the-wall because it's Kalihi... haha! The presentation of the food was also a pleasant discovery! Everything looked fresh and appealing! It was challenging to narrow down my selections to just one styrofoam container. Finally, I got the Green beans, Eggplant, Shrimp with broccoli, and tender Sweet sour spareribs! The broccoli was not mushy nor overcooked! The beans were so crisp and tasty! Customer service is always good. Inside is pretty small and when it's packed you have a hard time ordering because people are in the way and blocking the food. Potato Mac salad is good, white rice was mushy, shoyu chicken (not good, no taste at all, would not recommend), tuna sushi (good), chow fun (good). Overall, they have some pretty good stuff, you just gotta know which ones to get. read more

Very over priced. There were not friendly. Reviewed two Okazuya's that day. Two plates were $41 and some change at Gulick. Went to another Okazuya in Waimalu ordered two plates with a little bit more selections and was $29 and change. We did order 6 plates in total and was still under priced with a lot more quality. Great okazu-ya in Kalihi. Kind of ... out of the way on Gulick avenue. Set in an area with mostly homes. Small parking lot and street parking available. In this COVID-19 pandemic they are still open with social distancing requirements in place. All staff are properly masked and gloved which is a requirement by me lately. Patrons are also required to wear masks and only 5 customers inside at a time. FOOD! Great as usual. My favorites are the GARLIC CHICKEN, TUNA/DAIKON MUSUBI, EGG ROLL, FRIED CHICKEN, SHRIMP TEMPURA, CONE SUSHI, FRIED NOODLES,. Ok too many to list. Just go there and find out for yourself. I grew up on Gulick Delicatessen!! Quick eats, delicious okazuya food, located in Kalihi on Gulick Ave. Limited parking as it is an in-and-out kind of okazuya spot. I had: corned beef hash Pattie's, shrimp tempura, hobo, garlic chicken, fried tofu. I think I made an error with ordering things with the same sauce!! It all kinda tastes the same. If you order these, I recommend getting a starch like one of their musubi to break it up. It was pricey getting everything Ala carte, so next time I might go with a plate lunch combo! I grew up smelling the food cooking at 3am from Gulick Deli back in the early 1970s. We lived 3 houses down from the deli. The food back then was much more pleasing than the food now. The aunties there put their love into their cooking. I walked into the place last week. The ambiance is not the same. The food is not the same. The cost is pricey. There was a girl standing looking at us but did not say anything. No hello!, no how may I help you? I glanced at the menu they had posted. We walked out. The prices are ridiculous and no aloha there! A classic okazuya takeout place for getting your comfort food fix. I prefer parking on the street instead of reversing for the allocated spots next door. They take credit card so no cash no sweat. The tempura, fried chicken, and noodle dishes are all good but what stands out to me is the hamburger and Okinawan sweet potato salad. Whatever they mix into the hamburger takes it a cut above the rest. The sweet potato has coconut and makes a nice dessert. Convenient and very fast service. If you're hungry and in a rush recommend coming here for quick lunch or light lunch. Everything in store was ala carte. Wonder how many dishes are offered total. There was so many dishes to choose from it was hard to pick, but with the help of the staff I narrowed down my options. Still though food here is plentiful so be cautious and try not to over order the prices stack up fast. It's really cheap here though, most food items are $1-3 per item. I loved the egg omelette and hamburger steak here the most. My only complaint is the miso fish wasn't very tasty. The fish tasted super fishy and not fresh like the other dishes we got for lunch. read more

Can't believe I've never reviewed this place! One of my favorite places for spam musubis and chow fun!! Hands down the best !! I've been supporting gullick since they had the location on King St. sad they closed down but I'm glad they still have one now in Kalihi !!! If ever I get the chance my butt is here grabbing a bunch of their musubis and chow fun, something about it is just so good!! The workers are always friendly and they always have a bunch of food choices. Everything is by "servings" so you can't just get one piece of chicken lol. Kalihi gem, small delicatessen near the bridge. So much choices and hammah grindz. Been coming here since I was a child. Prices are not at cheap as they used to be but can't blame em especially with this inflation. Service is still fast, parking is tight, but there is a lot next door. If you can't find street parking just park down the road at the park walk back to your car and have a quiet meal in you car after you pick up you food. Musubis and chickens are on point. read more

For the first time, i had their garlic chicken, which was terrible! I wish they didn't run out of their spicy chicken which is one of my favorites. The garlic chicken is soggy, and just gross. Can't even tell what parts of the chicken you're eating. Please bring back the fried tofu every day! It's delicious!!! Make more spicy chicken and stop the garlic chicken! read more

Okay, yeah, I know. It's the first time I've been to this okazuya. I had no idea what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised with a couple of their dishes. The futamaki roll was very tasty and not overly pressed with rice with a nice balance of seasoned shiitake mushrooms, kampyo, tuna, carrots and of all things, cucumber! Loved it! I'll be ordering some for our New Year Day celebration, it was that tasty! In fact, I preferred it to our go to futamaki place, KYM (which closed this past January 2023). The vegetable tempura was crispy with kamaboko (fish cake) slices in it. Yummy! I also loved the corn beef hash which was tasty, huge, and crispy. It's worth a visit to this local iconic okazuya. Perfect okazuya shop to stop at. There is ample parking next door and in front of the shop if you're lucky. There are so many choices but my go-tos are the corned beef patty and chow fun. We've gone a few times now around lunch (11-11:30ish) and they still have a lot of options available. My friends and I had just come from a hike and we were looking for a quick grab & go lunch before heading to the beach! My friend (a local) had really liked this place, and told the rest of us to get the bento #1 but substitute chow fun for the chow mein. I went with his recommendation and omg ... I was so hungry from the hike and this made me so happy I almost cried. The bento has a few different options, but mine ended up having the shoyu chicken, beef teriyaki, spam, chow fun, rice, and this cluster of veggie tempura (think it had fish cake in it too?). SOOOOOO good. Such delicious flavors and textures. The only gripe I have with this place is that there's no seating - so my group of 6 just ended up popping a squat outside the shop on the concrete. Had first ever experience at Gulick's today and boy was it good (most of it). When I first arrived there was about 3 people in front of me. I hear a lady yell "next". Not knowing who she was referring to, they got in front of me motioned it was my turn. So I started with chow fun, a piece of mahi, and the egg omelette. Then she disappeared behind another worker. Not wanting to cut in front of the guy that was still ordering, I waited until it was all clear. Finished up with a hamburger patty, hash, and a shrimp tempura. The chow fun, hamburger patty (firm good flavor), hash (big), and tempura (crispy)was good. The mahi not so much (chalky tasting in my opinion).
