Taiwanese Pork Chop Rice Bento
Andy C.

Solid. Ambience is fun, at least based on what's visible on the first floor. There are displays highlighting Taiwanese culture up front along with some drink and cocktail vending machines. I've gotten takeout a few times now. I'll be honest, I walked by this place frequently and was intrigued by the concept. However, I found the doorman obnoxious. I understand they have the alcoholic drinks at the vending machines but I thought it was unnecessary to show my ID if I just wanted to even look at the menu and food. I only visited after they removed the ID check. Service is friendly. Food takes a while so I'd recommend ordering ahead. Prices are midtown level so a bento box is gonna run you $15-16 easily. Fortunately, it's a well rounded meal. The pork chop bento comes with 2 tasty pork chops, lu rou sauce over rice, some saucy vermicelli, half a tea egg and some boiled veggies. Flavors are good and everything goes well with rice. Quite satisfying. I've also tried the fried combo which is good enough, though I'd want a little more in terms of portion size. A decent addition to the midtown lunch rotation. And intriguing enough that I'll try to sit down at some point. Once again, I am glad the doorman is gone. Genuinely found it stupid and obnoxious.

Honestly my new go to spot for froyo! I love the Asian inspired flavors they have and toppings. It is small and they have no seating due to it being connected to a restaurant (located by the cashier in the front). Would love to see this place open its own independent location. The ube drizzle and peanut & cilantro combo was A1.

Gulp is in the Hue House and without knowing any better I thought the whole building just operated under the hue house. Lol. I brought a taiwanese friend there as an authority and we ordered a few things between us. We sat at the counter so our bartender friend gave us some enthusiastic recommendations (I like when they describe dishes as 'i can eat that all day' or equivalent). Midtown being midtown and midtown prices aside, the good was pretty good and Taiwanese friend endorsed, and the service was friendly and helpful. I'll be back for a date night or something.

The lu rou fan really tasty, probably my favorite thing there. Actually, I think this is my favorite. I've had in New York City to date which is crazy. The next best I had was in Taiwan, so this is really stand out to me. The pork was so juicy and tender and so buttery on the rice. They also have really good drinks and amazing service. I would definitely come back. It has such an intimate date-like vibe and would recommend!

Ok, let me start with the pros: -Cute train-themed ambience and decor with posters of Taiwanese pop artists. -At least the staff tried. Sigh...the bad...my friend and I came here for lunch. We're both Taiwanese (she was raised there before immigrating, and I was born here but have dual citizenship), so we have high standards when it comes to Taiwanese food. My friend is much more brutal with her honesty, and I love her for that. She got a vegan chicken Sanbeiji...it was so terrible and unpalatable, she sent it back and had it swapped for beef noodle soup. Noodle and beef and popcorn chicken were decent, like bare minimum of good. Nothing memorable. The broth was a bit too sweet. As we were eating, the staff was VERY LOUDLY venting right by our table about all the things going wrong with orders and technical difficulties. When it came to payment, I did tap. Usually waiters hold the card reader machine in front of me and look away while I pay and tip. Our server was gripping the machine tightly, was positioning it in a way where she would aggressively glare at what I was inputting, and I had to be assertive because the tip default options were 20%, 22% and 24%. This is ridiculous price gouging for tips. I had to give them a custom tip at a more standard rate. After I tipped, while my friend and I each went to the restroom, the waitress confronted each of us individually, asking how the service and food was because, according to her, "We usually get tipped way more," and went on to gripe about how her level of service she gave us, including swapping out my friend's meal, is not something they're supposed to do. Um... My friend venmoed me her half of the meal with the note "Shitty Taiwanese Food" lol

I first heard of Gulp, a Taiwanese restaurant from social media and friends. I was looking forward to finally being able to try it out. Especially since it is so close to the office or where I work and it's right by Grand Centrall Terminal. Gulp is located inside Hue House, which is a four story building, and the restaurant itself is on the first floor. As soon as I walked inside, I was greeted by the staff. The place was very busy and bustling with people. A lot of foot traffic. The staff were very friendly and happy to walk me through the menu and answer all of my questions. Which made my experience even better. I ordered the Chicken & Lu Ruo Rice Bento Box, which I was told is a favorite and one of their recommended dishes. I really enjoyed it and I thought it was very flavorful. While I liked my meal, I'm definitely curious to come back and try their other items off the menu. Overall, a good meal and great lunch spot.

Wow! Thank goodness for more Taiwanese places in midtown. This place has everything I want, from delicious drink options to variety of Taiwanese classics. I tried their spicy beef dry noodle bowl! Lots of noodles, delicious veggie and very soft beef. Yum! Their milk tea is refreshing and not too sweet. They also have a rewards program that gets you coming back for more. Will def come back to try other goods.

I was excited to finally try Gulp since it's walking distance from the office. I placed my order through the kiosk, simple enough! I ordered the minced pork noodles. They were just okay, but a bit too salty and heavy on the MSG. Unfortunately, that didn't sit well with me afterward. The mala fries (the only item I was really looking forward to) were a big letdown. They weren't spicy at all and had no numbing "mala" effect. Instead, they were oddly sweet. The seasoning genuinely tasted like Fruit Loops. I know that sounds strange, but you have to try it to understand what I'm talking about. I had my colleagues try it and they all agreed. $12 for what was basically a McDonald's small-sized portion... I might give it another shot and stick to fried items next time, but overall this was a miss. Highly disappointed...

Great addition to the midtown neighborhood. Have eaten here and also ordered take out in two different days. For take out: got myself the popcorn chicken box. It came with cucumbers, cabbage and half a boiled egg. It was good, just wished the chicken to rice ratio was better proportioned as there was much more rice than the chicken. Eating there: the restaurant offers lunch sets. For $20 I got myself the minced pork noodles. It came with popcorn chicken, cucumber and cabbage. It was good and I wish there were more noodles as it was really tasty. The chilli sauce was top notch. I am happy there is another lunch spot around the office!

Lu Rou Fan (Braised Pork Over Rice) Bento
Jackson W.

I was very excited to find a new Taiwanese restaurant near my office and decided to get takeout from here. The menu looked legit and had many popular Taiwanese dishes that I wanted to try. Ultimately I went with the braised pork rice (Lu Rou Fan) bento + a side order of their chicken cutlet. Happy to report that everything tasted really good and I will definitely return to try out some of their other menu items.

This location is accessible via A train at 42nd Street Port Authority. Upon arriving there was a woman in front of me arguing with the staff persistently haggling the price to be lowered, but to no avail. Woman, no means no! There are other bubble tea businesses within the locale that may appease your needs, but not this particular Gong Cha whom apologized for the inconvenience of the inability to lower the price on the product ordered. As I waited patiently, I took photos of this business' environment. The staff stated the cash register is not working and currently unable to accept either credit or debit cards, but cash only payments. Ergo, I was unable to obtain a sales receipt nor a drink label printed. I wonder if the staff reboot the register or check their internet connection to be offline as the cause of non-functioning O/O/O. [1] Customer service is average. Well... if the staff can lower the price for one customer why not lower it for ALL customers? Surely, why not make my drink order as inclusion for lowering the price, please? Hell no, of course not! The conclusion was ironclad. In the real world, this cannot happen. As I stood on line waiting for this woman to let go and walk away from her argument I had shrunk to my own gnawing thoughts. I took photos of the atmospheric environment. There is a cute signage: "Bubble tea where refreshment meets creativity." The pink metal water bottle is very adorably cute which is something that I would certainly purchase. Peach green tea, medium $7.25 My favorite default topping grass jelly (aka herbal jelly) loeng4 fan2 涼粉 is my standard request for $0.75 which was good, but not served chilled. At 30% sugar level request, it was slightly higher in sugar content. Former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg would shake his head at me in disbelief with disapproval and disappointment for consuming this excessively sugary drink. The peach green tea was not the cause of the sweetness but a man-made sugar embed measurement error. Nevertheless, this Gong Cha satisfied my bubble tea fix as it is now my addiction - in addition to my other addiction, writing. [1] O/O/O = Out Of Order

Ahh, grass jelly loeng4 fan2 涼粉 is my childhood favorite dessert and summons nostalgia! It is my mission to search for bubble tea businesses that offers grass jelly as a topping for my primary reason to patronize. It was abundant which filled one quarter of my medium sized drink. The grass jelly topping is New York City standard priced at $0.50 at least there is sustainability and a sense of normalcy. I requested regular ice, but the entire ice dispensed disappointedly melted and the drink became room temperate. Heat wave medium $6.00 Passionfruit green tea with grass jelly, 50%, light sugar. The drink alone was good quality. While scanning the electronic menu the drink names appear very comical and not business appropriate as well as this bubble tea business name Ho Ho Te. The sound speakers is boisterously loud blasting music directly at my face by the ordering counter. The cashier associate was 90% inaudible of her customer service questions due to the boisterously loud blasting music as I had to fight loud vs. loud by blurting loudly several times: "WHAT?" Why would a business intentionally place sound speakers in front of a ordering counter station where customers must communicate their food/drink orders? How can customers place their drinks orders with clear specific description/instructions only for the cashier associate to inadvertently obfuscate by misinformation because the message conveyed was utterly misinterpreted? Communication is vital for ordering and order fulfillment accuracy in the food service industry! The cardboard paper straws available are environmentally sustainable friendly for biodegradable and compostable. However, these cardboard straws taste AWFULl!! The drink selection is very limited menu compared with other bubble tea competitors. Disappointedly there is no Jasmine green tea on the menu. There are some food items. Takeout menus are available for grabs. Loyalty card is available which also serve as business card where the back is printed in gold foil. This business is very accessible by MTA NYC Transit at Port Authority 42nd Street's A, C, E trains and buses near the peripheral of Times Square.
