Ivy LOVES Gum Tree! 1/2 beach boutique with adorable knickknacks (great gift finds!) and 1/2 café with fresh & healthy salads and sandwiches. They even have gluten-free options! Their gluten-free peanut butter cookies are DEADLY! What I appreciate most however, is their beyond friendly staff. Gum Tree feels like you're at home catching up with an old friend over homemade sandwiches and tea. One of my favorite spots in the SB. Although the food was excellent, I had to give this 2 stars as they got my order wrong and one of the girls/servers gave me an attitude when I told her I didn't order bacon on my avocado toast. She scoffed and took my plate away and stormed off. When she returned she offered to have it remade but again with a bad attitude. Other than her employment at this establishment, it's a great location near the water and the menu has a lot of options. I recommend a visit as long as she is not on the clock. read more

The Gum Tree is really one of my favorite little places. I have a home business and I often meet here to enjoy the coffee, lunches (sandwiches & salads are fantastic!), and the patio area. They are dog friendly too, which is so nice. I love to bring my Lab, go for walk on the beach, and then stop by for some lunch. The food is creative and has an Aussie flare as one of the owners is Australian. I have been to Australia several times, and I must say, their Lamingtons (Aussie cake) are spot on - give it a try! The shop they have is also adorable and they have an outdoor area in the back that can be rented for small events. It's just too cute not to visit! read more

The place sucked. The bread was hard, and the salad was gross. Try Panera, or better yet, find a subway and save your money. I was very disappointed, but I did enjoy my ice tea. I LOVE Gum Tree. I stop here during my walks along the strand to grab iced coffee (which is the yummy Italian brand Lavazza--and I've gotten free or cheap refills before) or a sandwich. I've had the brie & apricot preserves, one of the breakfast ones with egg and mushroom, and the curry chicken sandwiches. I've never been less than immensely satisfied with my food. The owner is almost always around and chats with customers, and knows most frequenters by name. Also, Gum Tree sells Dirty Chips, which are the best chips in the world, and therefore I love Gum Tree. read more

I'm an Australian who lives in LA and was excited to get a flat white and meat pie. Unfortunately I found the flat white just a standard, frothy American coffee. If you're going to market yourself as Australian coffee shop you better know how to steam something so simple as milk. The meat pie also collapsed in my hand which tells me it was heated in the microwave. A meat pie you should be able to hold like you're at a footy match. The flakes should be crunching off it. The inside was nice and had friendly staff, but to over priced for the quality. read more

Suited us to a "T" for breakfast. Healthy food, nice and interesting selection, friendly service, wonderful outdoor seating. Inside is small, but in Hermosa, outside works almost all the time. We had a yogurt bowl and the apricot and brie. Both were excellent. Will be back. read more

My husband and I decided to have breakfast at the beach on a Friday morning and we found this place on Yelp. First of all, the restaurant itself is super cute. It feels like a historic house with a wrap-around deck and outdoor patio. I ordered a egg, bacon, mushroom, and feta cheese on a ciabatta sandwich. My husband ordered a turkey, red pepper and spinach sandwich. Breakfast items come with a choice of organic green or fresh fruit. We were both super impressed with the flavor and freshness of our meals. Deeeelicious! The fruit was especially fresh and ripe. The service was impeccable. The two women at the counter were friendly, attentive, and personable. We will def be back soon. read more

I only knew of this place from a magazine article blurb in a magazine...and Im so glad I happened to see that. This place is great! If I lived closer, I can totally see it as a place I would normally hang out at a few times a month. From Anaheim, it's a little ways...but oh yeah...I'll definitely be back! As you probably already know before reading my write-up, the place is in a converted house. I met one of the owners that happened to be there, an Australian, and he was really cool (arent they all? ;). Plus the girl at the counter was really nice and helpful. When you walk up the few steps leading to the entrance, there is a sign for the cafe to your left, or the store area to your right. We went to the cafe first, and unfortunately, the Tomato Basil (usually one of my favorites) I was told was literally sold of the last amount to the previous customer that had come in at some point! Argh. Anywho...I opted for the turkey sandwich, and lo and behold, it was, with almost certainty, the very best turkey sandwich I have ever had...anywhere or anytime (sorry, Mom! I know, that's saying something! lol). I commented on it to the counter employee and she said how it is (as the menu says) free range turkey. I dont pretend to know for sure what that is, but I have a pretty good idea and it tastes great however the turkey had lived its' life!! There were also some great peppers added to it...well, ya just have to try it and you'll know what I mean! The side salad was very good, too, as was the cafe mocha...very smooooth. I also think it's really unique how there are items there to eat that are usually only found in Australia...cool! The store had some unique items as well as some somewhat staple items like candles and such. Next time I want to go when I have more time (and money!) to spend! read more

Had a great experience at the Gum Tree Cafe. We rented out the back patio for a baby shower and it was overall a wonderful experience. The back patio was a perfect space for small groups and the food and service were excellent. From the time I met with the owner to discuss having the party and through numerous emails prior to the event and to the actual day of the event, the owner (Will) was incredibly responsive and helpful with a great sense of humor. The attention our party received was top notch and the food was superb. I highly recommend the Gum Tree Cafe for hosting smaller showers and parties. read more
