I had been wanting to try Uncle Stavros Cafe for some time after noticing this cute little café on the corner, and I am so glad we finally stopped by. It is bright and airy and perfect for a relaxed Saturday afternoon lunch. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel incredibly welcome, almost like we had been invited over to a relative's or friend's home. The menu is approachable and thoughtful, with some really delightful Greek dishes. And yes, Uncle Stavros has to be Greek, right? My wife and I shared the Greek salad and the chicken gyro. Both plates looked amazing and tasted just as good. I almost went with the beef and lamb gyro, but for lunch the chicken felt right, and it did not disappoint. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked. The salad was full of great flavors and textures. After tasting the gyro chicken, we both agreed the salad would be even better with that same chicken added in. The real showstopper, though, was the pita. I honestly cannot remember the last time I had a gyro where the pita itself stood out. It was so good that we ordered extra to take home. All around, it was a fantastic experience. I was surprised to see some of the lower Yelp reviews, but after reading them, they seemed to focus on things like an Apple Pay issue, an unfriendly waitress, or even a chair being moved. We experienced none of that. What we did experience was great food, warm hospitality, and friendly regulars who added to the neighborhood vibe. Breakfast it's one of the toughest services that you can provide. Last Sunday me and my wife were looking for a place to have Breakfast, and we found Uncle Stavros Café... I asked for an omelette and my wife for some French toast and let me tell you. It was an unexpected pleasure. The food was excellent, very well presented, at the perfect temperature, and with the exact amount of fruit in the side. We were served by the son of the owner, a sweet John guy, with the best attitude in the world, as soon as we arrived, he reserved us with coffee that by the way, was very very good. I just had the best omelette of my life! I've been meaning to do a review for this small family local spot for some time, and today's experience has pushed me over the top. The food quality and presentation here is about as good as it gets. I had the Uncle Stavros omelette today and was blown away how good it was. They use the freshest ingredients and every element was cooked perfectly. If I sound like a fan, so be it. Did I mention the cafe mocha is amazing?! I highly recommend you try this little spot in Hermosa Beach. And maybe along the way (responding to some scathing crazy sounding reviews) give them a little bit of a break if they're off a bit in their hours or if they don't want your laptop in their restaurant. Really great service here! I think we met the owner. He explained the Greek coffee which my sister and cousin ordered. It has a bit of sugar and coffee grounds at the bottom that you're supposed to drink. I got a cappuccino. Delicious! And probably one of the better cappuccinos I've had in the city. They have a cafe side and a restaurant side. The seating is separated. It's a great location by the beach. We had a very disappointing experience here today. We waited over an hour for our food, while a couple who sat down after us received their meals and finished eating before we were ever served. We checked in multiple times with our server and were repeatedly told there was a large table, yet when we walked by, that table already had their food while we were still waiting. It wasn't adding up. We eventually paid for our coffee and decided to leave because we needed to get our baby home. Instead of an apology or acknowledgment of the long delay, the owner came out and started arguing with us. As I was leaving with my baby, she made a rude comment instead of trying to resolve the situation. A simple heads-up about the wait time or an apology would have made a big difference. We came here as a family of seven on the second anniversary of our father's death this past Sunday because my brother loves this place and wanted to share it with us. Both for the food and ambiance. When we pulled up an extra chair, the waitress immediately said, "You know there are plenty of other restaurants" with attitude and walked away. That single comment changed the entire tone of the morning. We were already emotional, and instead of being welcomed, we were made to feel like a burden for simply wanting to sit and eat together as a family. We immediately stood up and walked out. You didn't just lose seven customers, you lost an extended family of over 50 people who actively share restaurant recommendations along with friends. Food matters, but kindness matters more. We came here for breakfast. Small, cozy breakfast and brunch place that's been in this neighborhood for years. It has both indoor and outdoor seating. My partner has dietary restrictions due to his health- wonderfully they made our breakfast plates as requested not soaking in butter or oil. There were two large groups enjoying their Sunday morning breakfast - one was young families with babies and one with many years of wisdom. I had the Hermosa omelette with hash browns and sourdough toast. The hash browns were brown! Not soggy, not half-cooked - all crispy! The bacon in the omelette was thick and crispy. We used to be regulars until the owner decided to stop serving my wife, special needs child and mini schnauzer. The last time we ate there, she started yelling at us indiscriminately even though the other patrons were shocked and couldn't understand why. Today, it had been a few months and we figured we'd give it one last try. However, the owner said the back patio was closed even though people were eating and a table hadn't been cleared. The spinach and mushroom in the omelette were so watery it just completely overpowered the entire dish. The eggs were very oily/greasy, left an unpleasant taste in my mouth. Service wise, can't say anything more than just mediocre. They had a man and woman who seemed like the owners, working tables and in the back, so I'm assuming they're very under staffed. I didn't really love my previous experience here - as the waiter was grumpy even in a completely abandoned restaurant, - but as everything else was too far, I thought to myself 'Do I want rubbery french toast and microwaved bacon and indifferent service? Sure, why not?' So I walk in and the place is slammed. I was hungry and wanted to try an gyro, so I asked the waiter if I could get an gyro to go. He tells me they can't do to go orders because they're understaffed. My response was, innocently, 'Not even a little sandwich?' As I'm standing right there - not calling him on the phone making a huge order - I genuinely thought it wouldn't be a big deal to inquire. Now I know when I'm being a jerk, and if I had acted in a manner that deserved such a response, I wouldn't be writing this review. And the restaurants I frequent will all tell you how much of a wonderful customer I am. I am very sweet to my servers (having been one before) and I tip well. But whatever *very long* series of poor life decisions that this waiter has made that left him working at this restaurant with no-one wanting to come in and work with him because he's so toxic - and maybe too many days out from his next methadone appointment - left him feeling it was okay to tell me to 'GO TO HELL' apparently for asking for a sandwich. At a restaurant. The people who were behind me in line all heard this and left as well. Well, I tried to 'go to Hell', but the service was terrible.
