This is a gorgeous oasis smack in the middle of Hermosa Beach. I had no idea this was here but now that I know, I won't be having my meetings anywhere else. The room is gorgeous, with actual comfortable and inviting seating, a chandelier and velvet ropes leading you to the counter. The vibe is super friendly. The coffee is delicious. I was there for a meeting so I just grabbed a cheddar scone from the beautiful pastry case. They close at 2, so schedule all your meetings around 1 pm and VIOLA... you have a reason to keep to your schedule! This is such a find. It's like entering a hidden, refined world. We visited on a recent Saturday morning just as they were wrapping up a busy breakfast rush. We were told our food would take about 25-30 minutes, but it was absolutely worth the wait. By the time our order arrived, the crowd had cleared, and we were able to relax and enjoy everything at a slower pace. I had a cortado along with a warm, toasty ham and cheese croissant. My husband ordered the wagyu brioche and couldn't stop reacting with "oohs" and "ahhs." One thing to note that the brioche is toasted, but the sliced beef is served cold. That didn't bother him at all since the meat was incredibly tender. The dressing that came with the side salad also had some heat! As for me, I loved the Cendrillon Doré pancake. It was light, fluffy, and topped with mandarin oranges. It reminded me of pancakes I once had in Amsterdam, but even better. We also had the chance to chat with the owner, Mary, who was so kind and welcoming. She shared a bit about her Moroccan background and her time in France, where she learned many of her recipes. We made a dinner reservation at Covinten for our 35th wedding anniversary. We were hoping for something special and Mary and Scott definitely delivered. We shared a delicious Prawn cocktail in a Bloody Mary sauce as a starter. Then my husband ordered the Lamb Shank, he is still raving about it two days later. I had the Bordeaux Sirloin. Both dishes were truly delicious. We had a chance to talk to Mary and Scott a little bit and it was wonderful to hear about their determination to stay true to ONLY using fresh ingredients for everything. The coziest cafe I've been to, hands down. With smooth jazz, beautiful lighting, and upholstered seating makes for a wonderfully comfortable dining atmosphere. The service was splendid, and the food was absolutely delicious. My girlfriend and I each ordered the smoked salmon sandwich, and it was absolutely divine. Best sandwich I've ever had. We also ordered the chocolate croissant and the raspberry turnover from the-- I must say-- GORGEOUS pastry case in the line. The chocolate croissant almost brought me to tears of joy. The raspberry turnover was just absolutely amazing. The drinks were delicious. We started with a hot mocha and an iced caramel macchiato. Covinten Café is a really nice surprise in Hermosa Beach. It has this laid-back tropical feel, but there is also a subtle French vibe going on that makes it feel a little more special than your usual coffee stop. I had the sangria tea and loved it. It was super refreshing and not overly sweet, and the edible flower was such a cool touch. It actually tasted fresh and clean, not just something thrown in for looks, which made the whole drink feel thoughtful and different. I love trying local places but the experience was not what was marketed on their website or from the Hermosa Facebook posts. We went for early lunch and there were barely any pastries. Half the case was completely empty and not because they were sold. It's not a full coffee shop, definitely not a proper bakery, and not a proper dine in restaurant either. I'm honestly not sure what to make of the place because between the bakery items, the main sandwich entrees, and the beverages nothing was great, just mediocre. There's not even a proper kitchen or bakery ( picture Tommy and Atticus) or real coffee baristas like verve. Sorry, staff was nice but the experience was very disappointing and confusing. read more

This place won't last. Poor food, mediocre atmosphere, and made me ill. This is a weird fast-casual place where you order at the counter, then retrieve your own pastries out of the case (which could have been touched by hands before you) to give them to the staff to heat for you before self seating in a too-dark sterile room. And whatever they are using to heat food- DOES NOT WORK. Twice they attempted to heat my ham and cheese croissant which simply went from cold to room temp after multiple attempts. Their matcha is weak and basically just a glass of milk AND HAS PISTACHIOS on top despite not being listed on the written menu. And I have A NUT ALLERGY. Before you question why I didn't ask, I have never in my life been served a plain matcha latte with random crushed pistachios, so why would I ask that?! The COLD ham and cheese croissant was ultimately not food safe because I got a horrible stomachache and nausea after. The 2 stars are because my husband said his black coffee was "fine" and the chocolate croissant was good. There are dozens of amazing cafes with better food, drinks, atmosphere, and service (not self serve cafeteria pastries!!) in Hermosa that blow this place out of the water. Once the opening hype cools, I expect this place won't last the year with the stiff competition they are up against given their low quality. read more

We really liked the people, food and the mocktails. We can't make these things at home easily and found the options valuable. The seating is royal and interior is nicely done. My favorite was the Gateau Basque and my wife liked the specialty mocktail called mysterious ocean. Will definitely visit the place again to try other French delicacies. read more
