THIS FREAKIN PLACE IS AWESOME. I have wanted to try it for so so long and in doing keto, this carb heavy spot just hasn't been an option. But I decided to treat myself and I am SO glad I did. I did order via Postmates so I cant comment on ambiance or ordering irl, but we're here for the food reviews. I ordered enough for a small army... First up was the Burrata with a side of fry bread. Holy moly people... this is it. Their fry bread is flavorful, crusted with parm and rosemary and some salt, thick as a focaccia type bread but imagine that... fried. Bout died and went to heaven. The burrata was oozing with an olive oil drizzle and didn't even require a sprinkle of salt. I could have just gotten that and been happy! Never fear though, of course i had to try a salad and pasta. For the salad I went with the chop salad- the ingredients seemed complex but perfectly paired. Radicchio, celery root, pear, smoked Gouda (drool), pepperoncini and pickled mustard seeds?! Cmon!! It accompanied the tagliatelle really well. That pasta was perfectly al dente, mixed with candied shallot, egg yolk, parm and smothered in burrata, sesame seeds and bread crumbs. I could die happy. The pasta from Gumba was undoubtedly excellent, but we had such a frustrating experience that I can't award 5 stars. Parking was easy around this food truck, despite how crazy busy it is. We arrived about an hour before closing time, but it took the full hour to get our food. Nothing is sadder than standing in line and watching one of the dishes run out. Oh well. Consequently we got 4x the pappardelle with the beef short ribs because the tagliatelle ran out. Getting the bread was a little too much in the end, but I don't regret trying it. Since we had our husky puppy with us, this was an excruciating wait for him. We were all exhausted, and it went from sun-up to chilly evening, so we took turns sitting in the car. I was embarrassed (& annoyed) for suggesting Gumba because of the wait. Eventually we made it back to our Airbnb but were too tired to fully enjoy our meal. We ate and fell asleep since we had to fly out the next morning. Don't get me wrong, the food was amazing. I just wouldn't have subjected everyone to that kind of wait if I knew. read more

The place looked nice and very full when we picked up our food but we found parking right out front. The fried bread was good and basically was like Focaccia and was still warm when we got home. We both got the Pappardelle Pasta which was just okay, there was very little meat (felt like a food cart portion) and it was extremely greasy. The pasta was sticking together quite a bit which made it a little dry. Maybe in person would be better but a dish for $15 I would have expected more. There are so many Italian places around I don't think this will be our go to place as it just hits the okay level. read more

Without a doubt, some of the best Pasta I've ever had, and we'll be stopping by to probably try the entire menu next time. The Tagliatelle Carbonara was a dramatic and delicious experience full of rich flavor, perfectly made and cooked pasta, and all the visuals and smells to wrap it all together. The staff is awesome!! Super friendly, helpful, and exuding pride for what they offer the people. Gumba is our favorite pasta place in town! We've followed them since they were a food truck and their food, service, and drinks have never let us down. Love their brick & mortar space in the winter because it's cozy without being cramped, but excited for the warm weather to come so we can sit outside on the patio again. The seafood/squid ink spaghettini is insanely flavorful and delicious, and the tagliatelle is my other go-to. They've also had the fazzoletti lately which is killer if you're a fan of mushrooms and goat cheese. And. And. And. The burrata is a must. Ugh, just writing this makes me want to go back already. I had higher expectations for this place considering the high reviews it had. Our food did not arrive until one hour later. One hour. Waiting that long for the food to arrive just for the food to be tremendously salty. I felt like I was eating straight up salt. I had higher expectations for the food considering how long it took, the reviews and the "handmade pasta" was not good at all bc every bite I was taking tasted like I was eating spoons of salt. My friend order a cocktail. One baby cup of cocktail that was $12 to ONLY end up tasted like straight up shots of vodka. Ordered a cocktail drink not shots of vodka. We ordered lemonade and sparkling water and it was never given to us. Waiter came to ask us "how was it?" when we were almost done eating. I think at that point we longer could say anything. Second time here, found out they don't have a regular menu. You *still* have to go inside and order, the food are still in a to go container, you can sit outside, but they give you a device that vibrates and makes noise to let you know your order is ready, so you get up out of your seat and go back inside to pick up your brown bag, don't forget to get your one time use plastic spoon and fork by the door. Ordered parpadelli (or something like that) for $17- oh and by the way the cashier will ask you if you'd like to leave a tip. Don't get me wrong, restaurant people absolutely deserves to get a tip, but I'm not fond of being confronted about a tip that is supposed to be a bonus I give if I liked the service and or food I got. That part irked me. Can they not afford a cash register where I can add the tip after I eat when I'm supposed to? Instead of being verbally asked? I usually tip at least 10% for to go food, but I felt like I should leave more because she verbally asked. So I said 15%. By the way, there's a sign inside that "if the workers are vaccinated they don't have to wear a mask" so most of them are not wearing masks but they are the ones cooking the food I will be eating, outside, from a brown bag, in a one time use foil and plastic container? Quite a counterintuitive move. 1 star for the food (its okay, it is equal to the price they are asking for it) 1 star for being able to sit outside (?) -1 star for workers handling my food *without* mask, which is improvement for them, but then WHY do I still have to eat from a to-go bag with all these waste that isn't biodegradable at all?? -1 star for being verbally asked if I want to leave a tip? (Explanation above) -1 star for zero service. Even at the bar, hidden inside, where you try to walk back outside with a full drink on your hand, is just annoying. At least give me a biodegradable small plate so when I spill a little from the top, it won't go either directly on the floor or on me. This is more like a unmoving food cart, for all intents and purposes, but with restaurant prices... Portland has SO MANY good places to eat, dine in, to go, and food cart, with better prices, that does not ask you if you want to leave a tip, and uses biodegradable containers. I love food carts and I'm a sucker for food carts that stay open late! While walking around Portland on our first night, we discovered this cute spot. We ordered from their late night menu here and found the pasta dish to be so delicious! There are plenty of seats around here too so don't worry about not finding a seat. The pasta was so tender and cooked al dente. The pasta dish was a tad bit salty but surely they have water nearby. I'm only going to talk about their fried chicken sandwich. I'd been anticipating trying the fried chicken sandwich for awhile now. We live in The Pearl, so getting over to Alberta requires an Uber. We showed up on Wednesday to a lovely brick and mortar. We were escorted to a small dining room in the back near the bar. Upon opening the menu, we discovered that Gumba does more than just their fried chicken sandwich on Wednesdays. Matter of fact, it wasn't even on the menu. I wasn't in the mood for pasta, so we inquired with our server after they brought over our drinks. Apparently, the fried chicken sandwich is available, but only at the bar. We were still served at the table, though, which was cool. Initially we were told that they come with tots, but they were out and only had curly fries. That's fine, since I'm not that big of a fan of tots. The sandwiches came out pretty quickly, and our server told us at that time that fries don't actually come with the sandwiches. We ordered one order of fries (they didn't come out until we were almost done with the sandwiches, kind of a bummer). The fried chicken sandwich was overall tasty, but the breading fell off almost immediately. Both of our plates were full of chunks breading. It was obvious they took care with the brine, but I was not feeling the dark meat. It was pretty messy to eat. The sauce was delicious. I only ate half of my sandwich, and had no interest in having it for leftovers. Overall, I don't think I would order it again. I was rather disappointed actually. We had my son's pre-wedding family dinner at Gumba tonight, and it was seriously one of the best restaurant experiences I've ever had. The service was impeccable, and the food was absolutely delicious. The fry bread with burrata was warm, crispy, salty, fluffy...the perfect focaccia style-bread that I will dream about from now on. The tuna and white bean salad was another favorite - very generous portion, super fresh and tasty with interesting flavors. We actually loved every single appetizer we ordered; the calamari, the fried artichoke hearts (loved the mint sauce with it!!), and the farro salad too. We had a large group so I was able to taste almost all the pasta dishes, and seriously they were all fabulous. I ordered the pappardelle with beef. The pasta was perfectly al dente, tasted homemade with scrumptious perfectly seasoned meaty sauce and a smattering of toasted breadcrumbs that added just the right texture. I also sampled the lasagna (so unique and fresh tasting!) and the tagliatelle (delish, esp with the pork belly!). The squid ink pasta and pork saltimbocca also looked delicious, and everyone was incredibly happy with their meals. We were all really impressed with the creativity of the dishes - they put unique spin on them that you don't find in a traditional Italian restaurant. I adore traditional Italian food, but it's exciting when you find a place that feels both authentically Italian and modern at the same time. I want to give a shout out to the house manager Eric, who accomodated our large group on short notice and was such a kind, thoughtful, and genuine sweetheart from beginning to end, the chef Jesse, who made it work for our group to order (in advance) off the menu, and our server Tori, who printed the sheet I provided with everyone's names & orders, and took the time to get to know everyone's names and made sure we were all taken care of throughout the evening. The meal was perfectly timed from beginning to end, and despite our large party of 18, everything went off without a hitch. A truly memorable evening. Highly recommend Gumba for anyone looking for a great, uniquely creative Italian meal, with genuinely caring service. read more

Tagliatelle $14- definitely different than any kind of pasta I've eaten. The cheese and fried shallots definitely elevated the flavor. There was a lot of texture and flavor profiles going on, making it very interesting. Larger portion of the 2. Pappardelle $14- the pasta was thin and soft, you could tell it was handmade. The beef short rib was very flavorful and tender, just wish there was more of it (I guess $14 is kind of cheap for Italian tho). It was tasty but a little one-note after awhile, kinda like spaghetti / ragu sauce. Smaller portion than the tagliatelle. Affordable, yummy Italian food in a chill environment! read more

How did I not review this place earlier? 5 stars, easy. Really high end, well presented, delicious pasta, served to go and eaten in a food truck seating area. For someone like me, this is perfect! I want really good food and don't want to pay a fortune towards the overhead and the staff of a restaurant. If I can get handmade, made to order pasta with high level ingredients that leaves me wanting more, than I am a happy camper. They ran out of the dish I wanted and I sort of begrudgingly ordered the pasta with mushrooms (forget exactly what it was by now) it turned out to be phenomenal, so much that I came back the next night to get the dish I missed out on, feeling okay that if it was out again, I could get the same dish again and be happy, but it was closed. I biked 4+ miles to get there too, so it was extra disappointing. Next time I am in Portland (and there will be a next time) I will be eating here again. If you want a fancy white tablecloth restaurant experience, this is not your place. read more

I flew in from out of state to visit a friend for her birthday and she was able to make us a 9pm reservation - perfect timing from when I landed. I was so looking forward to eating at Gumba since my last visit a couple of years ago. Despite arriving a few minutes early to our reservation and ordering as soon as we sat down, our waiter Jacob T was incredibly rude and passive aggressive. He rushed us at every point in the dining service. He gave us glares as he walked by and really soured the experience. The spaghettini I had was undercooked. Still clumped and stuck together in some parts. Scallop and mussels also seemed to be undercooked based on the texture. Can't really understand why the food was undercooked. We came earlyish to the dinner period when it was still not too busy but our food came out quicker than expected or necessary. Not sure if it's supposed to be but the sauce also seemed quite sour/salty, I expected that a bit with the capers but it seemed too overbearing to expect that that's what's standard. I've been eating the food from Gumba for a couple of years, starting at their food carts, and getting take out all during Covid. But tonight's meal was extraordinary! I shared the trout with polenta which was perfectly seasoned & wonderful, the large winter salad- absolutely delicious!! That salad was one of the absolute tastiest salads I've ever eaten!! We enjoyed the tagliatelle, a staple on their menu always a fan favorite. Topped off the meal with the freshest, crispiest most mouth watering cannoli I have ever had! Hats off to your continuing to excel as (in my opinion) the best restaurant in portland. Kudos to all the chefs at Gumba! read more

We had a long wait to get in to another restaurant for dinner, so we decided to walk around a bit during that time. This is when we stumbled upon this place and decided to get a pasta to share as a pre-meal to our actual meal. We got the carbonara, which was absolute perfection. When we finished the plate, we asked ourselves if we wanted to just get another because it was so good. However, our time was up and our restaurant called us to let us know our seating was ready. Such a delight to come upon this place. I have been back many times since. And when I'm in the area, I always come by to check what's on the menu.
