Extraordinary! Creepy! Choose one! This is an old Dairy Queen that has been converted to a Cajun restaurant. And it's only creepy because I've eaten ice cream here years ago. It's not really creepy creepy. And the food is extraordinary. I ate here last weekend with friends and we pretty much ordered the menu. We love Cajun and I just wanted to know what the deal is with this place. So let me just say this. It's real. It's Cajun. It's like eating in Louisiana. Personally I don't like gumbo, but that's not because of gumbo 2 geaux. Everything else I ate I loved! Check out the pictures and I think you'll see why. Anyway, if you love Cajun food, thank God you live in Alton. It's almost like you can smell the salt water from the gulf from this place.

It's been a while since I've shared how much we LOVE Gumbo 2 Geaux &, we recently fell in love with their King Cakes so mentioning them here! They have been selling them by the slice which is so cool and lets you try various flavors instead of ordering a whole one but, I am pretty sure once you try a slice you'll be placing an order for a whole one like we did! Definitely follow them on facebook to keep up with the daily specials - the chicken sandwiches are a solid favorite. You can't go wrong with the traditional gumbo. If you haven't tried Gumbo 2 Geaux yet you are missing out!

Our new Geaux to! Gumbo and Etouffe were flavorful and had a good level of spice. The hush puppies were a great side. We ordered to go and they have minimal seating inside. The owner was super helpful and accommodating. Can't wait to come back!!

If you are looking for authentic cajun food in the area, look no further. This place is absolutely delicious! The seafood gumbo was flavorful & hearty.

Just popping in to say that Gumbo 2 Geaux is one of my Geaux 2s (it was right there, I had to). They've expanded for breakfast hours, and if you haven't had their shrimp and grits you're seriously missing out. I highly recommend keeping an eye out for their specials, which they do every once in a while. I got their special crab dip the other day, and it was incredible. I've also been on a po boy kick. There really isn't a single thing on the menu you could go wrong with, it's all delicious! Not to mention, you'll always be greeted with love by the staff and/or the owners.

I usually grab a King Cake at Schnucks for my Mardi Gras party, but I was elated to find out Gumbo 2 Geaux was selling them this year. I enjoyed all the Mardi Gras decorations while picking up the cake. The king cake came out looking spectacular. I was thrilled and felt it was worth the $45 price tag. There was an ordering snafu where they messed up the time of my order, and I had to come back the following day to get it. Thankfully I had planned to pick it up a day early, or my guests would have been very disappointed. When we tasted it that night, the flavor lived up to the look. The texture and taste far and away exceeded the store-bought ones I've had, and it was as good as any I had from the French quarter.

Absolutely delicious food and the kindest employees! This is the best Cajun food I've ever had outside of New Orleans, and better than some food I've eaten there. We ordered the gator bites, seafood gumbo, crawfish ravioli, and messy wedges. The gator was crunchy and juicy without being greasy, the hush puppies were crunchy and fantastic, and the gumbo had just the right amount of spice. The chef and owner was very friendly and service was great. We live several hours away, but we might drive back just for this!

    Fried Shrimp Po-Boy

Wow. My husband and I just came here for the first time. I got the shrimp poboy and holy smokes!!! It was sooo hot, fresh, had the perfect amount of kick and the bread was out of this world. The fries were fresh cut in house, with seasoning on them. My husband got the seafood etouffee which was also delish. We wanted to try the beignets but they were sold out. We will come back earlier in the day to get these. Our new favorite place!! We can't wait to come back and try more of the menu.

I ate here a while back. Honestly, the food was not as expected. The owner and staff are very nice. The restaurant is a little dated.

Grab & Go with a bit of seating inside & out. Every dish has been a hit, but my go to is the gumbo and those hush puppies, better double up!

If you're looking for fresh seafood with authentic Cajun flair, you've come to the WRONG place!…read more My coworkers and I found this place on Yelp and thought we'd give it a try. After all, it's just up the Mississippi from Cajun country. I decided to order a dozen raw oysters and the crawfish etouffee. The oysters were a big mistake. Seriously...what was I thinking? This is a landlocked state. It shouldn't have surprised me that they weren't fresh (they had a very fishy smell...fresh oysters should just smell salty like the ocean, and nothing more) and weren't shucked correctly (they should slide freely from the shell...instead I had to scrape them off with a fork, which led to some less than savory butchering of said oysters). I'm surprised I didn't get sick, honestly. Crawfish etouffee is usually very flavorful, spicy, and rich. It's a tomato-onion-pepper-based stew (usually with crawfish or shrimp) served over rice. This was stew-esque, for sure, but it lacked flavor. It just tasted like tomato sauce. And the crawfish itself was really tough. And if I'm being picky, and I am, it was served with a small portion of rice mixed in...really just not enough. I couldn't finish it because it just didn't taste good. If you're just looking for a good beer selection (maybe a couple you've never heard of before), then this is your place. But eat before you get there...or just snack on appetizers. Seriously...terrible food. Chez Marilyn across the street is head and shoulders above Ragin Cajun...go there instead!

My daughter and I both had the catfish nugget dinner. Our side were yams, greens and macaroni and cheese. Everything was delicious. For most of our visit, real nice jazz was playing in the background until a patron complained (really?!) and so the music got flipped to RAP. We did not appreciate that. For dessert we split the red velvet cake (our second choice because they were out of banana pudding). The cake was dry - perhaps it sat out in the open uncovered. The icing was great tho. All that being said, I will go back to try some of the more traditional creole dishes on the menu. And hopefully they'll have banana pudding.

I started eating in the car because I wanted to taste it while it was fresh. The yams were well seasoned and sweet. My baked chicken was juicy and falling off the bone. It was so savory that I almost did not have any left by the time I got to work. I also enjoyed the green beans and I like that they had potatoes; this adds to the heartiness of the meal. While the macaroni looked wonderful and I could see the seasoning, I was hoping to taste more herbs. I still ate them all, but they were bland. I only did not add my own seasoning because the rest of the meal was seasoned well enough that I did not want to overdo it.

To be honest, the first two years of living in Alton I thought it was an old closed restaurant. Then when I found out it was open, some people said to avoid it, that it was a rough crowd. Now I can honestly say, I regret not going earlier. If I had, I may have been a regular. The reason I finally went was a farewell party for a friend moving to Florida. There were twelve of us and I wish I would have photographed everyone's food. It all looked delicious and most of them had been there before and others like me who were there for the first time were blown away too. The service was super friendly, I knew the server/bartender from another local restaurant that he worked. I had him coach me on what to order, since the menu had a variety of choices. He said the Mexican dishes were their most popular, but I had Mexican the previous night and did not want to repeat. I choose to go with the Pork Tenderloin Sandwich. Damn, it was good. It was better than the restaurant in town that is known for its Pork Tenderloin. It was a typical pork tenderloin sandwich, the patty was huge and extended beyond the bun. The seasoning on the pork is what made it stand out over others that I have had. The fries were pretty stellar, too. They were crisp and fried to an appealing light golden color. The sandwich also came with garnishes on the side. The pork tenderloin was so good, I did not add any of the onion, lettuce or tomato. I regret not going to Don & Penny's sooner. Don't make the same mistake as I did. Next time you're out and about, stop by Don & Penny's for a cocktail and some delicious food.
