We were in the mood for some Chinese food and wanted to dine in rather than get take out (to enjoy it fresher). We stopped into Gumbo on Saturday night and we're seated immediately. Our server was fast and friendly but not overbearing. All of our food came out in waves, and at a good pace so we could enjoy it all. Everything was hot and fresh tasting, and the portions were perfect (had plenty to take home for leftovers). The interior looks as you would expect an older local Chinese spot to look. Some traditional decor and feel. Only constructive feedback would be about the booth cushions being a bit beat up but not terrible and wouldn't ruin the experience. read more

A weekday lunch at a Route 6 eatery that could pass for any suburban strip mall Chinese restaurant within 30 miles of Boston. Small bar at the entrance, deceptively large dining room, and an old school menu similar to the previous joints I tried. The name on the signage out front differed from that on the menu, so I asked: the official name is Gum Bo, not Gumbo. General Gao's Chicken (on a combo): Shy of crisp, large of chunk, borderline moist, and mild on the sauce. Average. Pork Fried Rice (on the combo): Varying shades of darkness on the color, faintly moist, just a bit of old timey flavor, with an atypical light spiciness. A little above average. Egg Roll (on the combo): Celery and cabbage mix, with mini cubes of pink pork. Not moist but not bad. A little above average. Food ultimately was humdrum. Not bad by any means; just kinda typical and slightly better than average. Could've been what I ordered, could've been an off day, could've been my mood based on getting a lousy seat (on top of another table when there were plenty of other empty ones available), or could've been Chinese food fatigue from too many very recent (and better) Chinese meals. We had reservations at another restaurant up the street from Gumbo that decided to close today for maintenance without posting or calling to cancel the reservation. So we decided to head here for dinner. We were seated right away and ordered. We were worried about a wait without a reservation and being a Friday night but were lucky there was an open table. As usual the food was delicious and the portions are big at a great price. Half came home for lunch tomorrow. This restaurant is a fun atmosphere because everyone is welcoming, nice and hardworking. I've been coming here since 2002 - their general tofu was a cult hit among my friend group and we'd drive the 30 minutes just to get that about once a week. Actually addictive. I live in Los Angeles now and still have never had a better tofu dish in my life (and i eat a lot of tofu!) always chasing that Gumbos Tofu high! Would always go at least once on any trip home since i left in 2004, but hadn't been since 2016. Was so worried they would close or change after Covid, but i went back early this summer and the tofu was just as good as ever. I always get one order to go as well because it's that addicting i can eat it for days in a row. I usually go with my friends but they couldn't make it this time so thankfully my dad took me. He's a Chinese food connoisseur and was confused why we had to drive so far just to get a Chinese dish. He got the General Chicken and has been going back like twice a month since i left. His favorite Chinese restaurant closed bc of Covid so he's happy he's found some place as good. My mom's a big fan now too. Service is always good and the prices are reasonable. I wish i could ship the dish out here- it's legit my favorite meal in the world still after all this time. I don't know how they get that texture they get in that tofu but there's nothing else like it. Gumbos rules! read more

Since moving from Fall River where Chinese food was a plenty to Westport where there is only one option in town, we were on the hunt to find good Chinese food close by. We decided to eat in, and were seated right away. It's clear the place hasn't been updated since the originally opened. The booths are pretty warn and it's really dark inside. We both ordered drinks, my drink was listed in the menu as cheaper than what was on the receipt. Both drinks weren't worth it for next time. This was my very first (and, probably last) visit to Gumbo Restaurant. I met a group of friends there. The restaurant is very pretty and colorful with lovely ambiance. It is not too noisy but is lively. The bartender and receptionist were lovely and the waitstaff were all friendly and accommodating. HOWEVER: The Food, though plentiful, was the worst Asian food I have ever eaten. Everything smelled and tasted like it was cooked in very dirty and old cooking oil. It truly turned my stomach. The Crab Rangoon tasted awful - so greasy - as were the chicken fingers - the meat was tough and the fried dough encasing them was full of smelly grease. The boneless ribs were tough like shoe leather, as well. I am sorry to write such a negative review about such a lively restaurant, because it has everything going for it - EXCEPT - the FOOD. They need to get rid of all that old, smelly oil and probably discard all their deep fryers and start new. Even all our clothes stank of grease and oil and had to be washed as soon as we got home. read more

A friend who grew up in the area recommended I come here because he said I needed to try the regional "New Bedford Style chow mein". I'm not going to lie, walking in was a bit of a shock. A lot of American-Chinese restaurant's have decor that hasn't changed since the 70's, which is okay by me. It adds to the charm. This place had that in spades. Upon walking in I was greeted by a friendly woman tending the tiki bar. Yes, tiki bar. We were seated and given a menu. The menu was not unexpected except for the tiki bar drinks such as Zombie's, Scorpion Bowls, and the like. I ordered a Scorpion Bowl (I mean, you can't NOT do that when they are super cheap and at a place that really shouldn't have them). I also ordered the chow mein (chicken) as recommended by my friend and a side of egg rolls. The egg rolls were fine. Not wonderful, but very large. Mostly cabbage, but I kind of like that. The hot mustard was hot, which I dug. The chow mein tho...eh. It was weird. Imagine celery, chicken AND ground beef (?), canned mushrooms and strange noodles in a brown gravy sauce. Honestly, it was the least asian tasting thing I've ever had. (Maybe that's how they do it down on the south coast, make things taste as non-ethnic as possible). No idea. But it wasn't bad...just...if you had served that to me anywhere else, I could not have told you it was an asian dish. The drink was okay. Mostly punch, very little booze. My friend got another noodle dish that was, like mine, kind of bland and remarkably whiter than we were in terms of flavor profile. It just had that New England "lack of spice/flavor" I experience a lot up here. I don't know I'd go back. It was an experience to be sure, and the place has been in business forever so clearly they are serving what the locals want. But I can't recommend it as "good" Chinese food. I think its more to the taste of the locals now more so than actually being an American-Chinese place (because I've eaten at tons of them in New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West Coast). read more

By far, the best Chinese food in the area. Everything on the menu is perfection. Portions are plentiful, service is exceptional, and the prices are more than fair. We love to order the pu pu platter and fried rice for a nice variety. Started a new diet and tried something new today. Tried the fish and vegetable dish and it was spectacular. Chicken finger good but greasy can't bring to eat them the next day. Egg rolls best in the city. Boneless spare ribs are my favorite, I love them leftover but rarely have any because it's so yummy.
