Been awhile since I've eaten at Gumbo's. Gave it another try recently. The parking still sucks. The interior has been remodeled and looks great, love the dark layout and the huge dining room, however the food remains touch and go. Certain dishes are great, others not. Got a huge bread basket that looked empty, when peering in, two small pieces of stale french bread smothered in Saran wrap were visible. Shame all that wasted space. C'mon Gumbo. Don't skimp on the bread. Serve it fresh too! During past dining experiences, the fried shrimp and hushpuppies were much larger. During this visit they were midget sized, like they were "cooking to a price point". That said, Gumbo's always excelled at frying and they tasted great. The fried catfish was dredged in cornmeal and flour. It tasted as good as catfish can taste, considering slimy-stank taste is natural to a bottom feeder and next to impossible to cook out. If you like catfish, gather up a chair, you're in the right place. The gumbo was watery with small dices of sausage and more midget shrimp. The broth had little taste. Mediocre gumbo is a misdemeanor violation. I wrote Gumbo's a ticket on that one. The cajun pasta was very good. In the old days they used bowtie pasta in a thick creamy sauce smacked with Cajun decadence and big ole' shrimps. Today they used penne (not a big deal, but it cheapens the dish) in a disappointly watery sauce with a few midget shrimp. It still tasted good but it quite clear at this point Gumbo's was cooking to a price point. The STAR OF THE SHOW was the shrimp crawfish etouffee. Wow! Thick, creamy, rich gravy with a heavenly base of toasted roux having notes of roasted peanut. They got that one right, midget shrimps and all. I want another bowl NOW! DIATRIBE ALERT: Service wasn't terrible but far from exceptional. The new generation of wait staff expects big tips for mediocre service, like we should should be honored by their presence. I always tip large despite my general grumpiness. Problem is, tipping culture has gotten out of hand. It's become a bottomless pit of greed. Front and back staff with their hands out perpetually. Cash registers programmed to induce tip guilt. Dirty looks for not tipping a carry-out order. CARRY-OUT RULES: If I don't sit down to eat, I ain't tipping your ass. Go back to Nursing School or something like that. Why should the customer pick up the slack for an industry refusing to pay employees a decent wage? SUMMARY: Love the vibe. Like the food. Gumbo's was clearly cooking to a price point. Midget shrimp? Sacriledge. New Orleans ain't like that. read more

We had a good experience with takeout from Gumbo's. From the photos, I knew I had to try the Mac & cheese bites and the catfish appetizer. They did not disappoint. They both tasted like they were made in house and not from frozen. I would order these again any day. I also tried the shrimp po boy. The flavors were good, but the sandwich only had 6 shrimp. Po boys are supposed to be loaded up! I'd definitely go back and order the Mac and cheese bites and catfish appetizer, because they was amazing. read more

Food: The food here is so good. I love the "pick two" because it lets me live my best life without committing to just one thing. I always go chicken sandwich + Cajun pasta or gumbo. The salads are huge, but they are very onion forward, so just a heads up if onions aren't your thing. Shrimp comes piled on top of some dishes and you can add or remove it. Also worth noting, nothing is overly spicy, just solid flavor that doesn't knock you out. Service: The staff is genuinely kind and super accommodating. You can tell it's family owned. Everyone seems to care and wants you to enjoy your meal. Ambiance: The space is cute and Creole themed. It's cozy, casual. Easy 5 stars for me, this place is a gem and I'll keep coming back for sure. read more

I had been meaning to go here for what seems like forever and we had such a nice time. The service was excellent. I felt like the roux could've been better on the gumbo or needed more file powder for my liking. We really liked the Cuban sandwich, Mac n cheese and hush puppies. As a Louisiana native, I can say this place is the real deal. The Sunday brunch is fantastic with plenty of options. The stuffed French toast is served with a homemade strawberry sauce that pleases the pickiest tastebuds. The catfish is perfectly fried and served with tasty hush puppies. The shrimp and grits were a favorite and left me wanting to lick the plate. The sweet tea brought me back home to my granny's dining table and childhood memories. All of this with the ambiance and hospitality of New Orleans makes it one of the best places Macomb County has to offer. read more

This place will be added to my list of places to go back to. The staff were very friendly, nice and accommodating. We had a group of 6 and they were very attentive and helpful. It is a family friendly restaurant with a nice fully loaded bar. Jenn the bartender was so nice & whipped us anything we asked for. The food was just as I expected...DELICIOUS! Some of our favorites were the Mac and cheese, crawfish & shrimp Étouffée, Cajun pasta and the drinks! S/n: Don't order the candied yams if you like sweet yams, it wasn't as good as expected. Gumbo's was delicious! Everything we got there was great. The only complaint was that when we got the Bananas Foster, there weren't any bananas actually in it. Downtown Mt Clemens within walking distance of Macomb county offices. Open at 11 most days but closed Sunday. Metered parking in front. Food is great. I had the N.O. Medley ... cup of each jambalaya, gumbo and etouffee. All were distinct flavors with plenty of meats, shrimp and rice. Added the good cornbread. Partner had the daily special 1/2 sandwich and cup of red beans and rice. They offer soda, tea and lemonade. Service was good. Only negative was a 4% upcharge added for using a credit card. This is not the same restaurant, and has to be under new management. The gumbo was watered down, and did not have the consistency of a rue, but more like a broth. Total waste of money. Jambalaya was not good either. The rice was gummy like it was not rinsed off. Not a lot tomato or flavor. One piece of bread for large portions of gumbo and jambalaya. Don't waste your money. This establishment is never disappoints and NEVER dissatisfies! 10/10! 5 Stars! I could eat here everyday. The service is fast, food is HOT the seating areas will have you saying "wow" outloud! There 3 different vibes inside, 1st is where you order food at the front register, 2nd is the seating are on to the left side of the restaurant and that's more formal family seating vibes. The room on the right is "let's sit at the bar play some beer games and watch some tv while we eat" that's the side I sat down at and I had the best time! I tried one of the $10 giant drinks and that thing had me peeled lol! One definitely will get you there. We had Mac n cheese bites for the first time and are now addicted so there's that. We had the regular cut of Mac n cheese and I got a corner piece so I was definitely happy about that and I'm just gonna say it the mac & cheese is made with love and it taste like Black people mac & cheese, so I am definitely happy about that! The jambalaya will always be my favorite. I'll never not get that. We had ordered our food to go before, realizing the seating area was so nice, and we were still allowed to sit and eat from our to go bowls Moral of the story gumbos is a 10 out of 10 restaurant with food and diversity and efficiency and quality. We've been here a handful of times over the years and the food is always excellent. The Cajun classics are done perfectly. The gumbo and etouffee are my favorites. Gumbo's is a Cajun restaurant in the heart of downtown Mount Clemens. The interior reminds me of the restaurants I visited in New Orleans and Mardi Gras. The service is friendly too. They are good at frying food. I liked my catfish and fries. The sauces are excellent. I hate sweet sauces but the sauces that were included were more savory, spicy, and tangy. I really liked the cornbread. It tasted homemade. This was my first time to downtown Mount Clemens and it was more charming than I expected it to be. Although not as dynamic as other downtown areas, it has a lot of potential, and Gumbo's makes this area more worthy of a visit for lunch or after work. read more

We wanted to try something different so we decided on Gumbo's. I looked on line at the menu and saw a few things I wanted to try. Unbelievably this was the first time I ever had gumbo. I really enjoyed it. I had the shrimp included. The gumbo came with a nice slice of fresh French bread. The server was friendly but very slow had to ask multiple times for silverware and drinks. We went Saturday night. I did not realize how large it was. i love catfish so i had a few items to decide from. I chose the grilled catfish with veggie which I chose broccoli. It was delicious, however our server Joseph (even though extremely pleasant and outgoing) needs to learn how to deliver food hot. After delivering our food (altho it may have been sitting a short bit), I had no silverware. i asked for silverware and he went to go get drinks for other tables. I had to go get him for silverware. Fish gets cold quick but this time the veggies beat fish to eat. I ate fish first since it was still close to hot. my veggies I had two bites and it was cold. Even the broccoli was delicious but I only had 2-3 pieces because it was cooled. I wanted to eat the fish while it was still warm, but I dont like having to rush. Will try here again just because it was so so good but just with a diifferent server Yes I could have sent it back bit I did not. why? because service tends to get worse. It was not the chefs fault. It was delicious. and we will go again but this time not get Joseph. It just would have been nice if everything was hot. My kiddo is taking private lessons next door and we have vowed to try all the little restaurants that are in the beautiful downtown Mt Clemens. This place is absolutely out of this world. Before we sat down I asked if I could get everything without spice. She assured me I'd be ok. I can't do spice/heat because if a holey stomach. Ha Ulcers. Anyways.. everything looked good. When I try a new restaurant I try a little of everything. We started with hush puppies, green beans with garlic and Mac and cheese. We have been on a Mac and cheese kick at home.. it was so good I got a piece to go for one of my kids at home. The green beans were fresh, hot, and the taste was great. The hush puppies alone are dry, with the Cajun dipping they were another amazing food choice. I love pasta and asked if I could get pasta no Cajun. One of the girls (I think this is all family owned and operated! Like mom makes everything and the daughters run it- although maybe wrong) She brought me out this little cup of Cajun pasta and it was just what I needed. We filled up. This is out of place in my story but I did finger the Cajun pasta bowl clean. Judge me if you must but it was so good. My daughter was embarrassed. She got the gumbo and half sandwich and she was pleasantly surprised she liked everything she got too. She ate everything she ordered so no leftovers for her. This place is absolutely a solid choice. I'd even feel comfortable coming in her alone. The girls that run the place are kind and willing to help with any dietary concerns you may have entering a Cajun place. They are patient and want to ensure you like everything you order. Pick 2 was $14. So many things to choose from. For my daughter and I to eat with trying a bit of everything, my bill was less than $70. I think that is pretty fair and we have talked about bringing her sisters back so they can try it. read more

Seriously! How have I not been here. If you haven't you do not know what you're missing! Excellent and tender hush puppies with perfect sauce. The crawfish and shrimp etoufee could be spicier for me, but they know how to make a roux with flavor. Important- they know how to make perfect rice. One of the best Old Fashioned drinks around here. I normally do not post a review unless I have a picture to attach but I am going to leave a review anyway, and then I'll go back tomorrow to take a picture of this amazing food as it is properly plated. Posting a picture of gumbo and jambalaya in styrofoam cups does the food no justice. I am in town for work and found Gumbo's on yelp. When I pulled up on a Friday evening I wasn't too sure about this spot because the area was empty and I didn't see anyone inside other than the Door Dash guy who walked in after me. I ordered a bowl of jambalaya and a cup of gumbo to go. I really wish that I had purchased a quart of each. The jambalaya and gumbo came with muffins or cornbread for a little extra. I honestly could have done without both. Too dry for me but I just added the cornbread with every intent to throw it away with once I got back to the hotel When I got into my room and opened my bag I could see shrimp pushing up against the lids of both cups. The aroma from both cups smelled delicious but I thought that I was being deceived by just seeing shrimp at the top. Boy was I wrong. I started in on the gumbo and it was rich with a great spice. It was full of shrimp, ham, sausage, and chicken along with rice. I didn't even need to add the hot sauce. I haven't had gumbo this good in quite a while. The jambalaya was just as good and full of shrimp, chicken, and sausage with the right amount of rice. I loved the extra juice of the gumbo so much that I poured a little onto the jambalaya. These dishes were so good! And oh by the way, that cornbread is incredible! It's like dessert. I ate one and I'm about to get into the next one. I am not a cornbread dude at all, but Gumbos has found a cheat code!
