Went to Gumbo's for the first time last Friday. They had a large party that was putting it to their kitchen. Things were a little backed up and we never noticed until our waiter apologized for the wait and offered us a beer on the house. That is great customer service! We ordered a trio sampler with jambalaya, red beans & rice, and étouffée, a catfish & shrimp dinner, and a side of collard greens. Instead of taking the waiter up on the beers I asked for a piece of corn bread. OMG! Everything was hot, fresh and tasty. But y'all, those greens and that cornbread!!! I will be back especially for those. On a side note, the amazing catfish and shrimp came with french fries which are typically a filler or side note for most restaurants, but not here. They were hot, crispy and perfect seasoned. We will definitely be back! read more

I had been anticipating trying Gumbo's for some time now, actually after I found out about the restaurant via Yelp. Last week I was finally able to get out to the Mt. Clemens area, and see what is was all about. I had read and was told conflicting reviews, but I was still excited to see for myself. The restaurant is in downtown Mt. Clemens, so more than likely prepare to park at a meter. Once I walked into the restaurant, the first thing I noticed was the music, nice R & B and old school jams were playing, so that was cool! I placed a to go order of the fried catfish dinner (which comes with fries, coleslaw and hush puppies); and a small order of the jambalaya. I believe my total came up to $19.00. Which seemed a bit more expensive than what I was expecting. But no problem. So I sat a table and waited for my food. The waitress handed me the food, and before I left, I took a peak at the food, and I knew it wasn't going to be good. The catfish was extra dark, as were the fries, and looked like it was cooked in old oil. And the jambalaya, looked mushy. I took the food, as I didn't feel like waiting any longer. Once I finally ate the food, it was confirmation of my initial thoughts. The food tasted like grease, and no real taste, more of a bland taste of the catfish, and fries and hush puppies all tasted the same. The jambalaya was flavorless and mushy. The cornbread was good though. So I'm not sure that I would try Gumbo's again, however, for the prices, I expected a lot better than what I received. read more

So glad I came upon this restaurant for a quick lunch! The food I had was so delicious and satisfying. I ordered the New Orleans trio which allows you to pick three items from a choice of six authentic creole dishes- New Orleans Gumbo, Crawfish and Shrimp Etouffee, Jambalaya, Chicken Cajun Pasta and Red Beans and Rice. I ordered the gumbo, pasta and red beans and rice. All three came in soup cup portions along with a generous slice of cornbread. The flavors of all three were perfect-not overly seasoned and unique. The Cajun Pasta had bow tie pasta in a rich Cajun flavored cream sauce and contained large chunks of FRESH chicken. Red beans and rice-best I've ever had around here as well as the gumbo which had real andouille sausage in it. It is the real deal! Oh and the cornbread was fantastic - moist and almost cake like. They also serve a nice selection of desserts which I didn't get a chance to try like freshly made beignets, Belgian waffles with fruit and sauce and more. The restaurant itself is large whereby when you come in the entrance where the register is it looks like a carryout area but it is connected to a large seating area with large round tables. Looks like they took over two retail spaces when they opened this restaurant. It's decorated nicely and clean. The windows were painted with the words "Sweet Shop" on it so they may have more desserts to offer but I was in a hurry and didn't see it. Service is friendly and attentive, and the food came out quick. Worth the drive for lunch or dinner and desserts. read more

I found myself unexpectedly in the area and jumped at the chance to check Gumbo's off my list. We were able to find parking directly in front of the restaurant. It was near lunchtime but only one other table was occupied when we sat down. For appetizers, we ordered fried okra and New Orleans gumbo. Both were good. We added shrimp to the gumbo which already has chicken, ham, and andouille sausage. For entrees, we ordered seafood platters which consist of one catfish fillet, eight shrimp, fries, hush puppies, and coleslaw. They also serve cornbread with the meal. Overall, the meal was good not great, but I would eat here again. Also, the service could have been more attentive. read more

The gumbos and the étouffée are totally awesome and their pricing is very reasonable.

Great food! My family and I have been quite a few times and definitely recommend it. The service is great; the staff is very friendly and helpful. The only issue I have is the takeout containers: we ordered the catfish and fries, which is normally seasoned perfectly and crispy. The styrofoam holds the heat, creating condensation which turns the food soggy very quickly. It was still edible, but nowhere as good as it should be. So we were heading to a local restaurant and when we arrived there was an ambulance in the parking lot and a fire truck on the way. Decision was made to find alternative dinner options. So we drove into Mt Clemens and Parked. We walked past another option only to find it closed. I thought why not try Gumbos? I've been meaning to for awhile and it always slips my mind..well I must say I'm glad I finally got the opportunity to grab some food from here! Nothing pretentious the place has a cool eclectic vibe and super quiet, no music it's actually nice. The menu has a nice selection of soul/creole foods and they let you combo up, that's awesome! So I did just that I got some red beans and rice and a andouille sausage Po Boy and a sweet tea. My wife grabbed the pork Po Boy. Gotta say the red beans and rice had pieces of ham, it was saucy Smokey and delicious the sammich was great as well, it had a spicy aioli the bread was soft the andouille was nicely grilled a little caramelization for extra flavor. My wife's sandwich was equally good packed with tons of flavor. Found another little Gem right in the neighborhood. read more

My husband is a huge fan of Cajun/creole cuisine so of course we had to try this place. I will say every Cajun/creole restaurant we have visited always decorate their place so cute. This place was no different and I think I like the vibe to this restaurant the best. Upon entering, everyone is very friendly and the service was no different. My husband I shared a shrimp po-boy with fried okra and a taste of New Orleans with gumbo, Cajun pasta and étouffée. Although, I think we received the shrimp creole instead of the étouffée. Out of the three, I really enjoyed the Cajun pasta and my husband thought their gumbo was tasty. My husband thought shrimp po-boy was the best out of the three places we tried in Michigan. The lady that helped me was very nice. I placed a carry out with all sides and shared with my brother. The atmosphere here was so impressive I could definitely see myself having a private party here. Good food, I think they close at 6PM so it was a little empty, ok a lot empty so service was good. When you walk in the place does not make a good impression, however go to the left and find the proper (and nice) dining hall. The gumbo is New Orleans style and done right. The Cajun pasta was "amazing" per my grandson. The cornbread was moist and very good. So glad I found this gem less than 15 minutes from the house! One thing to note-no alcohol, none. No beer, wine nothing but don't let that stop you, it is located in a great area so you can eat then drink very close by. read more

I've been here a few times now, and they've got a lot of options for food. I've only had the basics so far, and enjoyed them a lot. They have a good deal for a choice of 3 small cups of a variety of dishes. I've had the gumbo, etoufee, jambalaya and red beans and rice. The gumbo and etoufee are my favorites, and a nice size for lunch. They're a little different each time, it must be different cooks. Service is quick and friendly, and they're taking good precautions here. By far it's my favorite Cajun place in town. read more

A relatively new business to Mount Clemens. A sparse offering of Cajun cuisine - the menu is simple. I ordered the combination and received decent cajun cooking. Prices are decent for a decent meal. My first meal at Gumbos was okay. The restaurant had a rustic, pleasant atmosphere. The service was mediocre and she seemed a little disinterested in taking my order but did not have an, entirely, nasty demeanor. I wanted to try it again and consider making a more interesting menu choice. My second visit was a carry out meal for myself and my daughter. That meal exceeded my expectations. The seafood platter was good. The batter was crispy and golden brown on the large catfish and medium size shrimp. The shrimp and crawfish ettouffe was flavorful and delicious. The Michigan salad was bright and tasty. The Mac & Cheese balls were cheesy, gooey in the inside and crispy in the outside. Great meal. On my third "visit" I was underwhelmed! We ordered the same items as the second meal. My fish was overcooked / burned on each end. The "bread pudding" was a watery, slightly-sweet, egg custard with no traces of bread. Great fried shrimp! Cooked just right and tender as can be. Suprurb macaroni and cheese balls. Gumbo is good; the smoked sausage can be a bit chewy and you can keep the hush puppies. They can be used for target practice. Garlic green beans are very tasty. The bananas foster make a nice finish to the meal read more

Solid 3 stars. I was excited to visit this local gem mainly because I always rely on my fellow Yelpers to lead me to my next regular spot. Now this could be on my list of go to's for regular lunches because it's so close to work but it isn't the food that keeps me coming back to be honest it's primarily the sweet tea. I've tried the shrimp PoBoy, red beans and rice, the etouffe, gumbo, corn cake, and the Cajun pasta. Sweet tea- every time has been spot on. Shrimp PoBoy-good and flavorful but wish they would have put the aioli on the side so my sandwich wasn't so soggy when I got back to work. Red beans and Rice- they tried.. I'll say that it did have the smokey flavor of the ham but that's it, it was very bland otherwise. It lacked flavor and my only other suggestion is to spice it up and I don't mean heat. Just because something has heat doesn't mean it has flavor. The red beans and rice was also quite mushy. Etouffe-was good but extremely oily. It had flavor, and had a soupy texture with just the right amount of heat. Gumbo-I have to be honest and say I would keep trying just to see if they ever got it just right. Not everyone can make these traditional dishes and I think they've given it a good shot. Cajun pasta- noodles were over cooked and on the verge of being mush. The creamy sauce lacked flavor not heat. Corn cake- it was fluffy and sweet corn (yes I know it's supposed to be cornbread) Would I continue to go back, yes! Why we'll because it's a mom and pop restaurant and I love supporting them.
