Came on a rainy day and missed out on their beautiful outdoor seating. Many say that it has the best view and I can see it based on the angle and position of the porch. Came for lunch and ordered a few items recommended. The pork sandwich was a disappointment where the bread was over toasted and very hard to eat. Great German restaurant nestled in between apple orchards in Highland, NY, a stones throw away from New Paltz in the Hudson Valley. We all agreed, AWSOME FOOD! Truly hand crafted delicacies from (what I can tell) true master chefs who mastered the culinary art all together. As Pleasing to the eye as it is satisfying to your taste buds. Really. Our server (and all the others) was so upbeat, happy, and attentive. Forgot her name but had long braided hair. Awesome girl! The ambiance will have you coming back for more too, as the food will. This was our first time there, but we already planned to go back for their burgers that smelled so good as we came from the parking lot. I'm sure they'd be something special too. Maybe I'm just not a German food kind of guy, but I just didn't particularly enjoy the food. It was very standard sausages and pickled vegetables. Also, the server was a bit unfriendly. They were pretty busy so maybe she was just overworked. If you're by Catskill, go elsewhere for food. read more

I really don't understand why this isn't 5 stars!!!! Everything from the decor to the ambiance to the food to the service was amazing. The food was so fresh and the service was extremely friendly. We came for a late lunch and we each got a different dish. I got the pork panini, my friend got the curry wurst and my other friend got the goulash. We also shared the mushroom appetizer and I got a cappuccino. Everything came out hot and seasoned soooo well. I love this entire place and it's such a hidden gem!!! For dessert we got the bier-amisu and the coconut tart which I both highly recommend. I'm definitely coming back here for dinner! read more

We stopped in for lunch on a chilly, rainy day in Fall and it felt like I was transformed to a village in Bavaria. I'm pretty sure I became fluent in German just by being there. As soon as you walk in you are visually treated by a cozy bakery with the most amazing pretzels and goodies. The interior has a wide open rustic ski chalet alpine vibe and great views of the local apple orchards. So naturally, once we seen the pretzels up front, that was a must order. Slight problem is when you order the menu pretzel, it get the pretzel roll with honey mustard sauce. Okay, its not the end of the world but I would love to see that pretzel up front on the table. The menu is chocked full of amazing items to choose from and it was hard to pick just one. One thing I knew that was getting ordered was the herb and cheese spätzle. It was topped with fried onion and the most German comfort food you can get. We also ordered the Weisswurst plate, pfannenkuchen and the Hungarian goulash sandwich. Gorgeous location, with amazing views. They were short staffed the night we arrived, and service was a bit slow. We'd asked for deck heaters to be turned on, but they never got around to it. I ordered the chicken cordon bleu against by better judgment (should have gone with a schnitzel!), and it was concerningly pink. Yes, I know that ham/bacon is involved, but the chicken itself just didn't look or "feel" right. This is the first time to be here since COVID. This restaurant did not disappoint. Fine food and drink and extra fine desserts. The outdoor dining area is a MUST providing the weather permits. Sadly, for me, the food just didn't hit the spot. Having just returned from hiking, I was pretty famished and would've eaten the butthole of a wildebeast and found it good. I ordered jaegerschnitzel and when it arrived, the expected mushroom gravy and hearty flavor of the dish just wasn't there. The minuscule amount of sauce was watery with no substance and the cutlet arrived in pieces; all very dry. The spaetzle appeared to be fried, was dry, and equally devoid of flavor. The side of red cabbage was tasty, but that is about it. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant for its food. It's saving grace is the outdoor vista and cold brews. Incredible food and so fancy, yet still down to earth. Family owned and delicious ingredients! The drinks were all amazing too. I had the Apple-rol spritzer and it was smooth and sweet! Their Haus Burger was delicious, but my husband ordered the German Short Ribs and when I go back, I'll be getting what he had. This is based on 3 visits over 2 years period. One dinner and 2 lunches Views are very nice on the deck. Food is average at best. Very expensive for what it is but there are limited choices in the area . Owners are difficult and perhaps as other pointed out not in the hospitality business judging by their behavior. Last visit we were swarmed by yellow jackets and wanted to move to a different table. Owner refused to allow us to sit at another table on the deck that was in the shade as it was for a larger group. The place was mostly empty at the time and remained empty entire time we were there. We are unlikely to be back. read more

But the owners (Dirk & Elizabeth, they often are the host or bartender) were anything buy hospitable and gracious hosts. It almost seemed as if they don't want your business and don't treat customers as welcoming guests. Our local host warned us about the couple but we thought he was exaggerating. Dirk was rude upon arrival and it continued until we left. And Elizabeth joined in on the rudeness when she stepped away from the bar. It was like being on an episode of Seinfeld with the Soup Nazi...except with Gunk Nazis. They were both rude and unwelcoming, even though our group spent a significant amount of money at this place. We heard they are for sale...which totally makes sense now, as these two should not be in this industry. When you read the other one star reviews, the theme is clear. Dirk & Elizabeth are not good restaurant owners. Never again. Our money will go to places more appreciative. Auf weidersehen! read more

Played a round of golf for Father's Day. Hadn't made any reservations for dinner. We were a party of 5. We were told to try the Gunk Haus. I was always leery of German food. Decided to try it. Wow, great food, quick service and a beautiful view from the deck. We ordered the pork dumplings, pork schnitzel, the burgers and the salmon special. Large portions delicious food. I highly recommend the pork dumplings we order two more plates! The pork schnitzel was tender and juicy with a mushroom sauce over it. I made the whole family try it. Dessert which we really enjoyed, was the layered cake with mint chip ice cream and a flourless cake. The desserts were incredibly delicious! Another enjoyable lunch today with views go on forever at the Gunk Haus. Our server, Anthony, very friendly knowledgeable and attentive. Tried the apple and brie Panini and loved it. Burgers are always a great choice with tons of fries; Smoked shrimp sandwich was messy but delicious as was the sauerbraten (2) sandwiches. I liked it here despite my below average sandwich, which I'll get to later in this review. Great view from outside. Once we entered, I loved the cozy, warm atmosphere of the dining room. The interior woodwork added a nice feel to this place. Our server was friendly. The husband got the Duck Special for $25- literally talked about it the rest of the day. I had a bite and it was delicious! I ordered the portabello sandwich for $12. I liked the salad that came with but I should have asked for the dressing on the side because it was saturated. The portobello sandwich wasn't as impressive as the duck dish. It was probably one of the least flavorful portobello sandwiches I've had and this is something I order pretty frequently when I go out. The portobello itself was small, and seemed overcooked. It had a sauce on it that was sticky and didn't do much for the sandwich. The pretzel bun was ok and didn't add much to the flavor either. I was hungry after a hike and ate every last bit anyway. I don't recommend ordering this sandwich though. There are better menu choices. For drinks, M ordered the Keegan Ales Mothers Milk for $6 a mug and I ordered the Black Forest stout and cherry wine mix for $6.50. I really enjoyed that! $25 for a lunch special and $12 for a subpar sandwich bring this to a 3 star. The menu choices are limited but they do have fun drink choices, a great location, and a friendly, cozy atmosphere. read more

So it is the day after Christmas and me, my mother and my brother are looking for a place to eat to celebrate seeing each other again. My mother recently just moved to Highland and had noticed this yellow building called Gunk Haus which was relatively popular and which she recommended we all go to for the first time. It was a fantastic choice. Down to the food, service and atmosphere Gunk Haus was a great holiday treat. First off Gunk Haus has a lovely atmosphere to it. From the outside its very country and the colors are delightful. In the inside it takes on a more European flair with wooden rafts, peter style chairs, and a fireplace. They decorate the whole place up to make it feel like Chirstmas as well and I love the chimney stockings. Foodwise Gunk Haus has a wide variety of german (and polish) meals to choose from. They have meat strudel, crepes, bratwurst, burgers, goulash, etc. I particular liked the meat strudel and with the apple strudel for dessert I feel like I ate more strudel in this restaurant then in the last 2 years. The beer selection here is fantastic! They have your classic wheat beers and lagers.... but they also have a signature stout here. When you come to Gunk Haus I highly recommend getting the milk stout as its definitely the best beer in their selection and they use it in a lot of cocktails and meals here as well. Its... well milky for one but also very smooth and tasty. They also have a bar and bakery here as well. They are quite close to the front of the restaurant so you can't miss them. I can imagine coming here in the morning to grab a pastry or after work to hangout with friends over some drinks. Hey maybe a milk stout or two. Gunk Haus is a fantastic place not only for the holidays but all year round. I highly recommend coming to this place if your around Highland. read more

We take our elderly father all the way from Brooklyn to Jenkins Apple orchard for his birthday and treat him to a birthday dinner at the fine German Mountain Brau Haus. However in the year of our Bored 2021, they were SO packed and crowded with tourists that we decided to find an alternate. Dare I say? We are fortunate we did. The food and service and ambience at Gunk Haus make the Mountain Brau feel like McDonald's. Instead of rushed service in a dark, noisy dining room, we were seated outside on a spacious sunny deck and settled into cushioned comfortable seats so welcome after an afternoon of picking apples! Gorgeous surroundings, warm and friendly service. The food was beyond amazing! Unexpected and refreshing! Traditional German fare prepared in a light, modern style. The herb spaetzle sparkled with hints of nutmeg and marjoram. Nothing bland or ho-hum here! The goulash was rich and mildly spicy just as my childhood remembers it should be. I ordered the star of the menu--a pan-fried trout coated in a cornmeal crust soft and drenched in butter. A caper cranberry relish kept the dish awake and I washed it down with a fine dry white from Austria. Your expected German faves are here--the best of the wurst and bright, crisp salads. That fish was probably the finest trout I have ever had in my life. I couldn't resist ordering dessert! A decadent warm chocolate cherry strudel with an entire ice cream scoop of schlagg. If I could give this 1 star I would. We came here on an empty Saturday afternoon, the inside was empty and the porch was maybe 20% full. They refused to let us sit on the patio with our stroller when there was beyond plenty of room. The asked if we could bring the bassinet instead which us the same size as the stroller.. there were even other families out there with young babies as well. They are not family friendly and will discriminate if you have a child. We immediately left and took our business elsewhere.
