Charlotte's Restaurant & Catering is a modern American restaurant and catering company that opened in Millbrook, New York in 2006. It was founded by husband and wife Mikael and Alicia Moller. Mikael started out as a restaurant apprentice in Sweden when he was just 13. He immigrated to New York City in 1981 and worked at several high-profile restaurants. Mikael met Charlotte when he began working as a chef for Charlotte's Catering where she was also working. After marrying in 1989, they bought the catering business. After a trip to Millbrook, they fell in love with the area and wanted to open a restaurant in town. They purchased the building that housed Allyn's Restaurant in 2006 and renamed it "Charlotte's Restaurant". The location was built in the 19th century as a church before being converted into a theater and finally a restaurant space. My wife and I recently dined at Charlotte's while we were visiting Millbrook. We were celebrating our sixth anniversary with a stay at Wing's Castle nearby. Charlotte's came highly recommended. We really liked all of the Autumn decor adorning the dining room. We started things off with some Autumn-inspired cocktails: I had the "Apple Pie Martini" while my wife had the "Warm Cider with Spiced Rum". They both really hit the spot. For entrees, I had the "Cornish Game Hen (with quinoa, butternut squash, pickled sweet peppers and rosemary sauce) while my wife had the "Creamy Lobster Mac & Cheese" (Maine lobster, bacon bits, herbed bread crumb with mixed greens and citrus vinaigrette). We both really enjoyed our food! After the dessert menu came around, we decided to share a delicious "Apple Galette" (local Granny Smith apple, sweet pastry crust, vanilla ice cream). Both were scrumptious! He then had salmon with a sauce, which he claimed exceptional. I began with a ceasor salad, which was delicious. For my main dish, I had the quail which was also great. I loved the fresh vegetables which accompanied my dish. Mashed potatoes, green beans, amazing onions, and zucchini. We ended by sharing a creme Brule which was lovely. Somewhere on Route 44, you'll spot a building on an open field called Charlotte's, and what is it, a restaurant. In fact, a very good restaurant. It's not a hard place to miss while driving. This type of place is what you would not call just a walk-in restaurant, but instead, it requires a reservation. Many people use it for big events, holiday gatherings, and also anniversaries, etc. The atmosphere is very nice and there's plenty of room for seating. Private rooms are also provided for a plus to keep a party separated while everything is handled in a controlling manner. This is my second time coming here and the first was many years back. The food we had is fabulous despite the long wait, it's worth it. The menu is updated on an everyday basis, just a heads up. Service is always great. My partner and I enjoyed our al fresco dining at Charlotte's. Overall, we liked our food, but the team was definitely overwhelmed with the customer base, and the level of service was sub par. However, I am keeping the rating at 4 stars because they acknowledged the challenge and because of its nice setting. There are about 10-15 tables for outside dining. Trees block the area from the road, though you're right next to parked cars. Nonetheless, the landscaping and trees on the edges of the outdoor dining area are very pleasant. It took a bit of time to get our menus, but it gave us the time to take in the scene. The menu changes regularly. There were lots of enticing-sounding items. The spinach salad was great to split and very refreshing. I liked their use of vegetables in the dishes, and the presentation of our dishes was multi-faceted but thoughtful. Frankly, the service was so bad that we would have ordered another drink, a dessert, a coffee, etc., but we were so concerned about how long it would take to get any of these items, that we decided to forgo it. On top of it all, my husband had to go inside and ask for the check after we had waited about 20 minutes after finishing our dishes. They did comp my seltzer water, which was thoughtful but in some ways a bit minimal. It kind of had us scratching our heads. I did have to call twice to get a reservation, but no big deal. Charlotte's was a great place with a lovely outdoor dining area and beautiful backdrop for dinner. The feeling is casual, but the setting makes you think of a relaxing summer evening. While the outside was beautiful, I am usually eaten alive by bugs and mosquitoes so we opted for the indoor dining, but the area with the open windows - we got the breeze and sun without the bugs. We additionally had the whole room to ourselves. Jenna was our server and she was great. We ordered the crab cakes, which won an award (they were good, but very small - 2 pieces for $16), we ordered the Ajax truffle fries, burrata salad, chicken pasta in a tomato sauce and 2 seafood crepes. We additionally got 2 key lime pie slices to go because we were very full, but that's always a good summer treat, especially being homemade. I absolutely LOVED the seafood crepe. I wasn't sure it would be so good, but it was creamy and jam packed with crab, lobster, and scallop. The black rice was great, the vegetables were plenty and varied - it was a great dish. I also got one of their special drinks (Caribbean punch?) which was nice, fruity and delicious. The truffle fries were seasoned well, the burrata was pretty good and went well with the bread. My husband really liked his chicken pasta dish too. The keylime slice was good, though very tart so for those who are not as big on that might not think it's so good, but I very much enjoyed the idea of much of the menu being homemade including things like ice cream. The meal overall was a little on the pricey side, but the service was great, the food was excellent and the ambiance was great. Charlottes has been a favorite location since it was another restaurant, because it's a lovely spot. We have eaten there many times and it's food is as good as some of the very interesting things that go on amongst the "millbrookenans" that play out right in front of you. That being said as lovely as the food is, the menu really needs updating. It has many lovely standards but at some point we need change. Please consider this as we love coming there, but need some new variety. read more

Surroundings are very pretty, we ate outside amidst gorgeous flowers; food was horrible. My branzino was brought smashed into small pieces together with fish bones, skin and scales mixed with a spoon of rice, no vegetables on the plate - for 38$??? Went to Charlotte's for their event night- 3 course dinner and comedy show. $85 per person. The clam chowder was so flavorful I loved it. For the main I ordered the rib-eye medium and it was a little too pink for me but still okay. The tiramisu was delicious. Seating was community style so we sat with 2 other couples which caught me off guard at first but then ended up being fun. The comedy show was okay but I think the humor was aimed for an older crowd. This place was great, highly recommended. Menu was diverse and filled with ingredients of flavor for a lot of the main dishes and appetizers. I took a star because of a small wine list ( the Sauvignon Blanc was not good .. Rhodney something.. but everyone has a preference ) and the buratta wasn't very good .. as an Italian American small cut pieces of buratta isn't a go too. So my review is a little bit late as we got married in march. But I cannot say enough good things about charlottes. My now husband and I walked in I think on a Tuesday inquiring about whether they could accommodate a party of 18 for our small wedding party after a ceremony in the park on Friday. Not only could the accommodate us but we were able to use a separate space from the restaurant off to the side, AND it was SO reasonably priced. The manager ordered us a specially made cake from her pastry chef on such short notice, offered to decorate however we'd like, made special menus with our names printed on them... and just made what we were going to treat as a non-chalant quick wedding, really really special. The weather looked iffy for Friday so she ( I'm blanking on her name unfortunately) even offered us their big banquet room in case the weather was bad (and it was) and when we arrived they had chairs set up for all our guests. It was really truly delightful and charlotte's staff, ambiance and just overall charm is what made it that way. We had planned to just have this small ceremony and a larger wedding later but it was so nice the first time around we are reconsidering the second one all together. The food was not great. It was ok but not special. The chicken just was not tasty or in any way special. The mushroom Wellington was blah and a bit overdone. The service was inconsistent. When the waitress showed up she was very friendly and professional but she did not show up often. We get the check and to pay by credit you get a pad and select anywhere from 20% of a tip on up. She deserved 15% for her lack of attention but when she's standing there waiting for you to pick out 20, 22 or 25% it's a bit awkward to say how do I get to 15%? We had a very mixed meal--one of us liked the pork chop; one of us did not like the corn risotto with mushrooms--very undercooked mushrooms, and the crab cake was mediocre, as was the bread. Nice wine and VERY nice attentive service. Nice setting so we wish we had liked it more. read more

5 stars isn't enough for this place. We had a private post-Baptismal luncheon for our daughter yesterday. Not only was the place stunningly beautiful, our waitress, Laura, was so kind and helpful and on stayed on top of everything. The food was BEYOND delicious (we are all still texting each other about It today) and the cake was both drool-worthy and beautiful. We also had guests with severe nut allergies and the chef made sure to cater to that. Alicia was a dream to work with while planning this whole event. I received a $100 gift certificate in July 2020. Little did I realize it expires six months after issue date. Yes it's written on there but I've never seen an expiration date on a gc and honestly didn't expect one. I called today and was told the best they can do is provide 50% of certificate price but not on a weekend. What?! I think it's really crummy that they took $100 and won't honor it at full value. I don't recall ever seeing a restaurant gift certificate with an expiration date. I'm not saying they do it purposely but ...what's the purpose of an expiration date on a gc? I'm so disappointed and annoyed. I'd rather lose $50 then take our party to dinner there and spend even more money. If the business is open, it should NOT expire. Period. Remember the days when customers were valued? Those are the restaurants I'll take my business to. read more

I did feel that the menu entre was overpriced by about $10. I did not particularly care with their tablet electronic payment method. I had made a reservation for Christmas Eve about a month in advance for myself, my wife, our 3 kids, and my parents (party of 7). When we arrived we were sat at a small round table that barely fit all of us. When asked If we could be moved to a bigger table since the room was empty besides one other guest I was told no they can't that there are other reservations. After about 45 min someone was finally seated at the bigger table which only had 4 guests. I said oh well and decided to not let that ruin our Christmas Eve dinner. The menu was pre fixed $75 for adults and $30 for kids. I understand the price being high if it was a fine dining establishment which I have been too plenty of times. However $75 for a bowl of soup and a strip loin served with FRENCH FRIES? and cold vegetables with no seasoning? As far as the kids menu it was either chicken fingers with French fries or Penne with butter for $30!....yes $30 for pasta with butter. On top of the food being terrible for the price my dinner came out 25min after everyone else. When I asked what the issue was the waitress said she messed up the order but when the manager came she said it was a new system. So which is it? It would have been nice to have dinner at the same time with my family on Christmas Eve instead of watching them eat. I thought maybe they would offer me a drink on the house while I waited but that didnt happen either. As a matter of fact when I asked for a soda it was forgotten twice. I read the response from the owner to my 2022 Thanksgiving review. Their response included that I should have asked for side dishes if that's what I wanted. I would have but -I left this out of my review- no one ever came to ask how everything was. I was trying to give the benefit of the doubt in my review. Secondly, the response about the wobbly table suggested I should have asked for it to be fixed. NO NO NO! You need to check on those things before you seat guests! Are you kidding me? We paid for fine dining! And in reading the other snarky responses to reviews ( yes, the wobbly tables were mentioned before) they are passive aggressive and very unprofessional. So now I WILL mention our brunch last year: I asked for a Virgin Bloody Mary. Can't drink alcohol with the meds I was on. Took a big sip and guess what? It was not Virgin. When we were offered coffee we specifically said "only if it is fresh". We got 3 cold cups of coffee! The lack of consistency in food and service, the inattention to detail ( wobbly table ) and unprofessional attitude in responses is disconcerting. I now am very vocal in discouraging people from going here when someone asks me for a recommendation to an upscale restaurant. I've given them many chances to get it right - anybody can have an "off" night. New owner? New manager? I don't know. It's a shame that they don't seem to want to get it right but can spend time being defensive and advising customers what WE should have done. read more

Charlotte's has a large expansive indoor scene with ballroom like rooms and a pub styled bar. They also have beautiful lights and patio on the outside. The real negatives of this place are related to the service and price. We got the Ajax fries which were addicting with Parmesan and truffle, the toppings and fries were perfect. Also the complimentary warm bread and whipped butter were great. The burrata salad lacked freshness and quality. We also got the jambalaya and seafood crepe, which were good as well, I quite enjoyed the steamed vegetables that I think others might not. Our servers however were very short and seemed a little annoyed when we were trying to get our order in or the check. They also were pretty unknowledgeable about the menu - we asked how large a portion was and they kept repeating "it's a normal size portion". I think this a typical asked question but they almost seemed that it was rude we were asking, not giving a straight answer. They also could not explain what some of the beer options were like and brought one that wasn't listed on the menu, acting annoyed that we wanted a different one since the one we chose was not available. The food may be good and atmosphere nice, but for the servers to act annoyed at your questions really kills the mood to eat for me and for pretty expensive restaurant, there is much better experiences out there. read more

This establishment was recommended by a local and I could not be happier to have listened to them. One of the best brunches I've ever had, including what may in fact have been the Platonic ideal of a Bloody Mary. Great ambiance, great service, excellent food. We were clearly just in town for an event and who knows if we'll ever be back, but we were given top-notch service and treated as if we were valued regulars. We also had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners. Pricing was very reasonable (though my perspective on reasonable is likely skewed by being from NYC). My introduction to Charlotte's was through an intimate wedding reception held by my friend. They hosted a late afternoon cocktail hour outside in the garden and an early afternoon three course dinner inside. Charlotte's is beautifully appointed - the foliage by the hearth, the beautiful murals lining the top of the walls representing the different seasons, the plating on the food - all of it was wonderful. I don't know if the following dishes are on the typical dinner menu but we had: vine-ripe tomatoes and burrata mozzarella (DELISH); seafood crepes with maine lobster (interesting with forbidden black rice!) or the hanger steak, which my husband said was delicious. My husband and I came on a chilly winter night. We were excited about the fireside dining in the bar area. The decor definitely lends itself to French country dining. We each enjoyed a glass of wine my husband chose the Veuve de Varnay and I had a Chianti Riserva. They let me sample an interesting sounding Nero/Syrah blend which I didn't care for, so I settled on the chianti. I felt the wine by the glass was a bit pricey $10 - $15 considering the small pours - but the wine was tasty. We split an order of Ajax Fries, which are basically french fries drizzled in truffle oil and Grana Padano shavings. The trip out here is worth it just for those fries trust me! My husband ordered a seafood crêpe which was stuffed with lobster, crab and shrimp. I had the cassoulet which wasn't a typical preparation, it was served in a small crock and topped with breadcrumbs, but definitely tasty nonetheless. We scarfed down the perfectly cooked fresh veggie side of baby carrots and haricot vert. The chef saw how much I loved them and brought me another plate. We were also treated to a small mug of his homemade glügg which was warming, spicy and on the house. Service was very friendly and efficient. The only real issue was that periodically the chef/owner would step outside to smoke but it must not have been very far from the dining room because as he came back in the room filled with the smell of cigarette smoke - an appetite spoiler for me. It is difficult to rate this place based on our mixed experience. The food was generally good but there were some service issues - primarily overly long waits for server attention throughout the meal. Positives: The 'Ajax truffle fries' that were recommended by our server were a big hit with our group. And the young women that was tasked with providing water for our table was extremely attentive to her job - in fact, we saw her much more than our primary waitress. Misses: Slow service - not sure if they were just understaffed. My $16 burger - ordered medium rare, no tomatoes - arrived decidedly on the rare side, with tomatoes. The room was pretty cold and it took two requests to get the heat turned on. This place had potential but did not deliver during our visit. read more

Just came home from dining at Charlotte's. First time there and was very disappointed. Waitress was very slow and inattentive. After finally taken our order, it took a very long time for the food to come. Waitress didn't remember who ordered what. I ordered rib steak medium rare with roasted new potatoes. She gave rib steak with mashed potatoes. She swapped it with another plate, but never asked how I ordered it cook. So, after everyone got their food and we started eating, I realized the steak was on the very rare side. And the steak was not tender. Never will I go there again. read more

This is our second time eating here at this lovely restaurant. We both enjoyed our experience there a lot as did the other couple who accompanied us. Seafood was what my partner and I ordered and we're 100% thrilled with quantity, quality and its presentation. We're greeted promptly, table service was attentive, pleasant, efficient and friendly. Prices are moderate to a bit pricey so not for all this who are on tight family budgets. There are not many such venues in the immediate area to satisfy my need for what I'd call "fine dining" so I'm pleased that they established here and are doing well. I'd describe the ambience as quaint/romantic and quiet, though we're dining was not at a peak time slot (even if it were busier, the place is set up to minimize noise.) The wine list was limited but had some good selections as did their listing for beers including some great micro-brews. read more
