The Potatato Croquettes stuffed with goat cheese and scallions were to die for. We went with a large party and sat on the early side due to few children (5:00). The lady at the front could have been a bit more friendly with all of the customers but it was a busy night. In fact, I felt there wasn't enough staff on hand for a busy Saturday night. We all got something different in the menu and everyone loved the food ( I went with the Short Ribs and they had a mustard taste to them that made them different from most dishes I had... Very good though). The beers on tap were unique and had a nice seasonal selection (I even walked out with a growler of beer). How can it be a 5/5? Waitress took a while from when dinner was finished to get us the bill. The place is great in that they don't rush you, but adapt to your clientele; we had 4 children under 5 and when dinner is done, ask for desert or give the bill.... Oooh. I can't say enough good things about this place. The owners are usually on hand to greet you and have renovated the restaurant with love. It's a large open space showcasing vaulted ceilings and huge windows that offer great light. It manages to be both rustic and refined. The food is authentic, delicious German comfort food. The spätzle and sausage are to die. The deserts are yummy. The wait staff are enthusiastic, cheerful and attentive. I've not yet dined there in warm weather, but look forward to it, as they have a fantastic patio with a lovely mountain view. This is a go to gift certificate for anyone you love. I thought the Gunk was fantastic! I stopped in after work on a Friday evening and it wasn't crowded but it was busy enough to feel you were out and about for the evening. My server, Rosie was friendly and very attentive. Not too much hovering but there when I needed something. I had the special appetizer which where the mussels. Superb! Rosie suggested the pretzel bread for dipping and it took it to another level of goodness. For dinner I had the German short ribs with cabbage and mashed potatoes. If you don't love this, you don't have taste buds. It was awesome. The short ribs were tender and the portion was substantial. YUM. I was full but I did take the pumpkin cheesecake home for dessert. Located in an old house above an orchard with nice views of the shawangunk mountains. The interior is sparse but charming. Food with German influence was well executed but rich and heavy for my taste. Veal chop, lamb stuffed cabbage and Short ribs. Desserts were also excellent. Have gone to this place countless times now and it hasn't failed us once. We were coming from Beacon, NY and, with Poppy's Burger joint closed for renovations, we were out of luck when it came to finding a local grass-fed burger. Enter Gunk Haus. The place has great beers on tap, a solid, consistent food selection; the pork loin sandwich and the Haus Burger are easy favorites. And the view from the patio, or the main dining room, of the Gunks and the Catskills in the distance, is out of this world. We had an excellent dinner at The Gunk. It is really a hidden gem with solid and homey Central European food, wonderful service and a good ambience. The dining hall is thoughtfully laid out and creates a perfect setting for the place. Our waittress was very attentive and made sure we always had what we needed, and she did a great job of explaining the different dishes, the history of the place and its quirky details. Oh my god, love this place my family and i come here all the time. Great beer, great food, Amazing deck and indoor seating. When we went last saturday I got the liverwurst appetizer platter, it was delicious so much food and for dinner i got the chicken stuffed with asparagus with grilled mushrooms and onions over spinach.. so good! Three of us went for dinner and each dish was amazing. I had the Jager Schnitzel and it was delicious, seasoned perfectly, amazing tastes and texture. My husband had the braised short ribs which were falling off the bone simmering in a perfectly seasoned sauce and our friend had the Goulash which turned me into a Goulash fan. This is my favorite place in the area. I've been amused at the disses in Yelp. They make me chuckle, because it's obvious they didn't read the menu or had ridiculous expectations coming to a popular place on a weekend without a reservation and making petty demands for sympathy. The staff here is amazing and the atmosphere is laid back and unpretentious. It's a German gastropub which means it's NOT a full on German menu but it's German inspired and you will find some excellent fare, such as the Chicken Schnitzel and the Sauerbraten sandwich. There is always something as well for the vegetarians. My fave apps? Pretzel and obatzda, the croquettes and when they have them, definitely the pierogies! The person who commented on the pretzel not being a true pretzel, hey it's not the baseball stadium or a hot dog cart in NYC. Up your standards people, and it's made in house and delicious. Ask for an extra pretzel when you order. You're gonna enjoy it. My all-time go to entree is the Haus Burger with hand cut fries. It's served with a spicy dipping sauce and on a pretzel bun. You like spice? Add that dipping sauce or some pepper jack or opt for the garlic spread. Wash it all down with a beer, sangria or a nice glass of wine. The beers rotate weekly and there is something for everyone to enjoy as well as ones regularly on tap as well as a bottled selection. There is always an IPA, stout or lager and other beers as well as local hard cider that's gluten free from Warwick. Mondays are also kill the keg night with 1/2 price beers. For dessert, the strudel rocks. If you were expecting it to look like Entenmanns, you might be disappointed. If you are expecting a light pastry bursting with local apples made in house and fresh, then you're in for a real treat. When apples aren't in season, expect a different fruit combo. The hot fudge cake is also good and can be shared. It's a devil food cake layered with mint chocolate chip ice cream with hot fudge on top. It's my comfort dessert. Coffee comes from Monkey Joe's, another mom/pop local place. It's really cool how they incorporate as much local products as possible. The owners are lovely, and to the naysayers, put your big girl pants on! For every negative review there are 20x's the positive. Mostly, I've noticed its people who are impatient coming in at high peak times expecting the world to drop everything for them. Be forgiving and be respectful. The owners and staff do their best and if you need to be aware of that when you are here and what to expect if it's a busy weekend. My suggestion to those newbies, come during the week to try it out and then, plan that reservation if you so choose, on a weekend. Please know that it gets backed up on a weekend and you need to keep that in mind There is a reason for that. It's damn popular! The seats are wooden and creeky and uncomfortable although I suppose it's part of the theme of the restaurant. The Gunk Haus is my favorite restaurant in the area and I have been there many times since it has opened. My experiences there have always been positive. I love the structure itself, its simplicity and cleanliness and its wood and views out on the mountains and orchards. I love that they often do not play music, and have it at a very low volume when they do. I love being greeted by Dirk or one of the pleasant waitresses or lovely bartenders when I walk in. The Gunk Haus has the best burger in the area. Period. It is served on their own pretzel bun, which is thick with a few salt crystals. The patty is always thick and juicy. It is actually hard to fit it in your mouth, and then care about anything else once it is. They keep a great selection of rotating beers on tap, with never a boring beer to be found in the line-up. Their homemade spaetzle is delicious, a comforting carbohydrate which accompanies their vegetarian options. Sausages are always delicious, and the sauerkraut reminds my mother of her German grandmother's. I actually know of one person, about as masculine and old-school as a man gets, who was brought to tears tasting their sauerkraut, it so reminded him of the one his mother made when he was a child. On the numerous occasions I have been there for someone's birthday, they have always treated us with great kindness. A whole cake was made for us with extreme care, and it was one of the most memorable I have ever had. The owners are perfectionists. Many times they gave me a feedback card, asking me to stop writing compliments and criticize them more. They are devoted to having a great restaurant and it shines through in everything they do there. My Yelp picture is actually of me at the Gunk Haus. Definitely go. The strudels need some improvement and for a German place, I would expect more beer. If you are looking for a tasty meal this is a great outing. Very dog- and people-unfriendly place. I called to ask if dogs were welcome on the patio and was told yes by a member of the staff, but the owners refused me at the door and told me that none of their staff would ever say such a thing. We had to sit at a picnic table on the lawn, and run back and forth ourselves to get food and beers. Haven't been back since. There are plenty of places with better food and much better service and attitudes, so there's no reason to go here. read more

Excited to try a new German place my fiancé and I came out for a nice dinner. The staff was very nice and I liked the little bakery section up front. We were somewhat disappointed with the menu but it was priced very nicely. I had the burger with kraut and coleslaw and she had the spätzle primavera and we shared a pretzel roll and cheese spread app. The app was ok, the cheese was very sharp! Funky flavor which I appreciated but certainly not enough pretzel roll to enjoy it. The spätzle primavera was mostly red sauce which I don't believe is supposed to be in that dish, the spätzle was a little lacking and it was riddled with olives for some reason? She did not enjoy it very much. My burger was good, loved the meat, hearty and cooked just right. I liked the idea of the pretzel bun but it was very hard to bite through causing my burger to be a complete mess. I didn't notice the kraut much which is a shame. The coleslaw was very peppery/ oniony. Very interesting. We both enjoyed the warm German style potato salad though, delicious! They had a few good beers, nothing crazy. We were disappointed that the chicken schnitzel was run out of, that was Rachael's first choice. It's just mashed chicken breast beaded over spätzle... Not sure how they were out on a Friday evening. In the end I asked for an espresso and the waitress stated she wasn't sure if the machine was working and she would go check, she came back five minutes later with the check and no word on the espresso or even coffee so we just paid and left. I feel that a more German oriented menu would be nice, maybe some more decor and re do the bathrooms! We will not be coming back read more

We finally ate at the Gunk Haus based on yelp reviews- it's way off the beaten track and NOT worth the money !! I went for the Hungarian Goulash, big disappointment, my grandmother was from Germany & used to make it like a stew or soup which is exactly the the way I've had it in other German Resturants including Karl Ehmer's. There were only 8-10 people there & we were greeted by "Kristina" who didn't appear to be old enough to be serving beer. After she brought our beverages she went two tables away and started talking with 2 guys at the table for at least 12 minutes or more. I called her name politely twice but no response she was too busy acting like a teenager who is star struck. I finally found another waitress (Rosie) who was very nice efficient. After we were almost done "Kristina" came over to apologize telling us that the guys wouldn't let her leave the conversation which is anything BUT TRUE we could hear most of it. What is really troubling is it appears the owner or Manager is right in the bar area on his laptop oblivious to the service being provided !! read more

Although the location is outstanding you need more than a view to survive! I have been to the Gunk haus three times with the first experience being the best and the third the worst. The overall quality of the food is fair to good and the service for where they are is acceptable! The owners on the other hand need to work on their professionalism if they plan to survive. On our last visit we were told that the deck was prime dining space(which it is and had they been busy I would have understood that) and when he(Dirk the owner) found out we(2 couples) only wanted some appetizers and drinks he said if we wanted to be outside we could go to the picnic tables on the far side of the restaraunt. There is no view from there and the tables were dirty and unlevel. I felt like Rosa Parks being sent to the back of the bus, so we left. I don't understand his mentality, 5 or 6 empty tables on the deck at the end of the day on a Sunday and he lost 4 paying customers! The food isn't good enough to deal with that. And on another note the physical apperance of the owners are hiddious. They look more like the lawn care workers than the owners, clean up a bit!!. We traveled quite a distance to go there that day and was really upset with the owners attitude. We are not disrespectfull or unreasonable customers. Actually we frequent many restaraunts of all levels and are typically recieved quite well. We will not return again and I will make a point of letting everyone know of my experience! One thing Dirk should know is the old philosophy the customer is always right, he will not survive if he doesn't change his attitude, you need new business and repeat business to make it and he had that both with our party and we left NEVER TO RETURN!
