Gus' Hawaiian Shave Ice is a family-run shave ice business run out of a small Volkswagen bus on the side of the road. It's usually parked up the road from Kamaole Beach Park I in Kihei with a large sign that says "shave ice". You can park along the same street. We got the large ($9) in the rainbow flavor. The flavors were on the sweeter side but it was still refreshing on a warm day. Coincidentally, we later saw them at a wedding at our hotel so it looks like they also do catering. read more

I stopped by here today by myself for some shave ice. Ever since I found out about this place, I had been hoping Gus's would be parked on Alanui Ke'ali'i. This food truck is actually an old school VW bus painted in white and blue. The line was about 10 people deep when I got there, even though it was around 7:30 and he was closing in about half an hour. After looking over the menu and seeing some wild options like birthday cake and gummy bear, I ultimately decided to go with an Ono Hua, or shaved fruit. For my shave ice I went with a regular size and chose POG as my flavor. Since it was shaved fruit, he had to switch from the regular ice to one that already had the fruit in it. Once he finished making it, he asked if I wanted a sweetener on top and I chose the coconut. As soon as I walked away I took my first bite and wow was it good. The POG flavor was legit and while the lilikoi dominated, that is exactly what I like. I loved the sharpness from the passion fruit and how the real fruit flavors were allowed to shine. The ice itself was super fluffy and light which made it even better. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I really loved this shave ice and can't wait to bring my wife the next time we are in Maui. read more

Yeah it's a bus but it's Gus's Bus and it's AWESOME!!! Gus was super cool and helped with narrowing down my choices. Service was great! I ended up getting the P.O.G. which was passion orange guava and my girlfriend got the strawberry mango pineapple. We got the Ono Hua (shaved fruit) though and my god I still remember the texture and taste of them. It's super good and wasn't even that sweet. It was like fruit flavored shaved ice with sort of a cotton candy kind of vibe. This is a MUST try and the shaved fruit is definitely the way to go read more

Do yourself a favor and go visit Gus! (I'd love to gatekeep because who likes a long line?...but I won't) Gus serves THE best fruit shave (and one of the top shave ice) on the island (Ululani's being tied for top shave ice). Gus is a small business owned by a family. You can find them at their usual spot and I do recommend following them on IG, because they are popular and can be booked for events. So, in case they stray from their usual hours, they will post on socials. So, FRUIT SHAVE!!! Get it! Only slight downside is that allergies can be an issue, because this business is run out of a VW bus, so they use the same shave machine for the fruit shave AND to shave the ice for regular shave ice. Fruit shave (similar to "snow" some may be familiar with) looks like shave ice but melts in your mouth like ice cream. Usually they will have 2-3 flavors to choose from. We try to stick to anything new or seasonal. This time, dragon fruit was it. The POG is also one you can't go wrong with. read more
