This iconic St. Louis place has been getting things twisted since 1920. It has always taken pride of being a family-owned business right near the heart of the city, and just within walking distance from the brewery and the Cherokee-Lemp and Benton Park Districts. This is a carry-out only restaurant, and the line is usually long here. But it's all worth it. Prices are reasonable, and service is friendly. You can also see the staff in the back making the baked goods, too. There's nothing more thrilling than munching on a breadstick-shaped pretzel, straight from Gus'. I've had Gus' Pretzels during the years, as every now and then my Mom would stop there and bring home a brown bag full of the pretzels. They'd be gone in a short time! On my recent visit, I had their bratwurst pretzel, and it tasted like heaven. I thought the brat would be dry (like it was sitting under a lamp for a while, like gas station brats...) but it tasted like it just came off the grill! They do have great icings to dip in as well. The only two downers are (1) you can't eat in and (2) the parking. I usually park on the street for this place. But either way, check out this long-time St. Louis staple! read more

The best pretzels in the Lou. I adore the pretzel ends and the sticks. I don't need a dipping sauce or flavor...I like them salty. Mustards, cheese, and other item are available for purchase. These pretzels need to be eaten ASAP. They are baked fresh daily. Do not try to save them over night. They do have some frozen- bake at home, pretzels in the freezer case. Try the lunch options. I was actually impressed. Impressed with the pretzels? No. Impressed with the service? No. I was impressed with the pristine kitchen that they are prepared in. It was bright, clean and I loved the red and white tiles. It was totally not what I was expecting when I shopped. I had only bought Gus' Pretzels from street vendors or at my local gas station or Walgreen's. To be honest, I never knew Gus had a retail outlet until I ate Benton Cafe across the street. I thought they were just a wholesaler. Wow, was I wrong. The pretzels are just okay, but not as good as Wetzel's. They're good for the price and they are local, so I guess I have to be happy about that fact. I was wanting bites or nubs, but did not see them on the board. I later learned they call them Endz. I'll remember that for a future visit. I instead ordered 3 Sticks and a Cinnamon & Sugar Twist. The C&S Twist had a bad taste and a worst after taste. Their sticks did taste better fresh then those from the bought from a street vendor. The staff was kind of pushy. There were three of us waiting to order and reading the board menu. We all stated we were not ready to order as we stood back behind the line to order. Different workers kept coming out and snapping, "I'll help whoever is next". Once I placed my order, the clerk was still rather cold and rushing. I hope this was not normal service and was because they were working New Year Eve's Day. read more

We first came to Gus' Pretzels about 8 years ago when visiting for a friend's wedding. It was probably the best part of our trip. In fact, it was top of the list when we finally made it back to STL all these years later. We got a bag of 25 sticks and a little bag of ends. All for under $15. Fantastic! The pretzels were soft and a little warm, tasted fresh and simple, so good! Everyone loved them and ate bunches right away. The toddler was so cute, walking around with her big pretzel stick in hand. Three days later, we still have some sticks left, and they're different than when they are fresh, of course, but still edible and tasty! They are super good with mustard too. They have cute little packs of the classic French's yellow, which I've never been a fan of, but I had a jar of stone ground brown mustard handy, and they are so good dipped in there! I definitely recommend Gus' Pretzels and of course, it will be our first stop if we return to STL. I would get more ends next time because they are really handy for snacking on while driving and they are just so cute! read more

This is another St. Louis staple that you must visit. I remember visiting as a kid or going to a baseball game with a Gus' pretzel stick in hand. So now I always make a stop to Gus' Pretzels when I'm in town! Their pretzels are served hot & fresh by friendly employees every time! They have a tiny parking lot but there's always street parking available, you just might have to park a block away at times. I recommend going early in the morning, not only can you get great parking but you're also in & out with an armful of pretzels in minutes. My go to's are always Endz with Cheese Dip and a Salsiccia. I've read so many good reviews about this place and had to try it. Honestly disappointed. They were really dry and hard to eat. We spent approximately $40 because we wanted to try everything. The Brat Pretzel was the best out of everything on the menu, but just the brat part not the pretzel. Nice to finally try but wont be back. read more

If you want some damn good pretzels, Gus' is the place to be. This St. Louis institution makes some of the best pretzels I've ever had. Dare I say it, I think they might be better than my Auntie Anne's pretzels (see what I did there, lol). My friend and I wanted a light snack before dinner so we ordered a garlic butter pretzel with gooey cheddar cheese dip, a cinnamon sugar pretzel, the salsiccia pretzel sandwich, a stick and a twist. The pretzels come out piping hot and after taking a bite, you know they're as fresh as can be. My favorite was the salciccia pretzel sandwich which consist of a pretzel wrapped around a spicy sausage. I recommend dipping in the cheddar dip. My only complaint is that the stick and twist pretzels had a really thick coating of salt -- had to rub some of it off. There's plenty of street parking as well as a super small parking lot in the back. Be warned, this place is cash only and the line can get super long. read more

Methinks not.. and I feel bad to give it, the one star, but when you expect someone to talk the talk about how great these pretzels are... maybe I should have walked the walk to walk far away...lets dish this.. While visiting family in St. Louis, it was totally recommended by them that this was the place to get awesome pretzels. Whether pretzel bites, sticks or twists, this was the place. My sis-n-law loves the bratwurst pretzel sandwich, which I almost got, and after the entire experience, I wish I had gone with it. But to the pretzels, they were COLD! We waited for a bit after we ordered because it was busy inside and there was a line.. So Since we were waiting, we thought they were being freshly made and baked in the back, but NO! We ordered 3 - Sticks and 3 twists - ALL COLD PRETZELS in a brown bag. Ultimately bummed when we received it. I felt cheated, and I compared this devastation to the Mall versions of Pretzel mania like Auntie Anne's or Wetzels Pretzels, which are both really decent pretzel places, and so concluded that Gus' was an absolute disappointment. Perks: The $ for the pretzels and more are very reasonably priced. If I had a better experience, I would have totally affirmed that it was all worth it. Downsides: Small and cramped place. Very busy lines, and no tables to sit down and eat. OverALL: Sad. Came almost 2000 miles for cold pretzels. Gus's may be fantastic for locals, but its totally a hit or miss. read more

Right around the corner from A-B is this little shop. They have signs advertising them on freeway billboards and I have seen vendors selling them on street corners near my sister's Carondelet/Holly Hills neighborhood. I was starving and I have a thing for pretzels so I swung in. Three sizable pretzel sticks, hot and freshly made with a cup of honey mustard and a fistful of generic mustard packets ran me about $1.75-ish, definitely under two bucks. Steal! It took me all of two minutes to make the transaction with a smiling employee. These pretzels are soft, dense and have the white salt sprinkled on them. White salt makes me think about ball games at Tiger stadium (sniff) with my sweet old dad, so basically happiness. These were good pretzels despite that nostaglia though. The honey mustard is quite good, probably should have gotten another container of it. It is definitely worth a whirl. read more

Yeses There is always a long line. It is cash only (but there's even a semi-atm if you forgot to get/bring cash). There are real pretzel dogs as well as ridiculous large custom jobs, like arch pretzels. They make the pretzels right there and a glass window allows you to watch the whole magical process. There are different flavors. Nos Waiting in line won't take you that long. A bag of fifteen "ends" with a cup of melted cheese and the cold beverage of your choice...great way to enjoy these legendary pretzels. I tip my cap to any family-owned business in operation for almost a hundred years. Three sticks for a buck sixty-five? And dipping sauces for thirty cents? That is the cheapest two-person snack that I can remember, and tasty too. I wish that I had had room in my stomach for a salsiccia or bratwurst sammich! The plain pretzels are good, but the cinnamon-sugar pretzel is well worth the $1.25. The butter hits your taste buds first, then the cinnamon-sugar, then the pretzel. What a ride. read more

Ever since I moved to St. Louis Gus' has been a highly recommended place to visit seeing it's been around for so long. The first time I tried Gus' was actually out of Schnucks' frozen section. The pretzels were some of the better frozen ones I've tried, so I was pretty excited to try the "fresh" ones from the store itself. I'll give them this-- they are super inexpensive. However, quality matches the price. The pretzels I got were almost cold (was really expecting hot and fresh). They taste exactly like every concession stand pretzel I have ever gotten at a high school sporting event. Their cheese falls into that category as well. Maybe an unpopular opinion but I'd take Auntie Ann's over them any day. read more

Stop #26 on my "Eating my way through Chicago/St. Louis and possibly doing other things on this trip Summer Tour 2011" found me in pretzel town. Apparently St. Louis is known for their pretzels. I didn't know that. i do now. If you are looking for a dirt cheap snack, check out Gus' Pretzel Shop. So inexpensive, yet so good. 3 pretzels (twists or sticks) will only set you back $1.65. One of their sandwiches will only set you back between $2.75 and $3.50. If you get one of these, do yourself a favor and get the Salsiccia ($2.75) which is a spicy Italian sausage inside a pretzel. How does that not sound good to you? I'm sad that I didn't get 2 of these. Also sad that even though I asked for mustard, I didn't get any. That would have added a whole new level to this sandwich. Sadly there is no place to eat inside Gus'. I found a park just down the street and sat in the grass while enjoying these treats. It was too bad I didn't have a beer to go along with them. That would have just made this experience a tad bit more perfect. read more

At my daughters wedding we decided on a pretzel bar for a late night snack and hired a third party (ST Louis Snow Cone- highly recommend) to set up the Bar using Gus' pretzel. We severed pretzels endz and pretzel sticks with a variety of topping including Warm Cheese, Mustard & Sweet Icing. (and also some stuff to top it off like Cinnamon, Chocolate Chips & Chopped Nuts, Bacon Crumbles, jalapenos & Chives* not sold at Gus') This was a huge hit and the pretzels were awesome. i have also gone into the retail store and lines are long, but move quickly. I don't think I've ever had a hot, fresh Gus' pretzel before, and it was amazing. If you have not had a pretzel from the shop yet, please get in here now! I also ordered a brat wrapped in a pretzel- also delicious. They offer ketchup and mustard, too, so don't forget the condiments. I ordered a bag of pretzel bites- these were served room temperature. Best eaten right away since they become hard in a matter of hours. They made our EZ reunion a very special day! After a stop at the brewery we made what everyone else thought was just going to be a stop by Gus' a suprise no one could have seen coming. Thanks to my better half we accomplished what could have been a very good idea gone awry. Unfortunately the lack of seating forced us to take our pretzel goodness to nearby tower grove park. If you are stopping by the Lou, you must grab a pretzel, or better yet grab a Bratzel (bratwurst inside of a pretzel,) covered in their honey mustard sauce it is amazing! My only tip for going to Gus's is if you go on game day make sure you go early because sometimes they do sell out of bratzels and other items. read more
