I had Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken for the first time last year in Austin. When I knew that I was going to be in Phoenix, I checked to see if there was a Gus's location close to my hotel so I could have Gus's again since we don't have fried chicken like this at home. I found the Camelback location and stopped here for lunch and went with fried green tomatoes (wonderful!) , 2 white meat plate (breast and wing) with fries and okra and it was just as amazing as I remembered it last year. Sweet iced tea refills included. I would have loved to tried their chocolate chess pie but I just couldn't. Service was friendly and fast, the place was quite lively when I came in since a large group seemed to be having lunch as well. A word of warning, portions here are quite generous. If you're feeling you're up for 3 pieces , go for 2 instead. read more

I LOVE this location! A coworker took me for a Belated Birthday lunch, as she knows this is one of my fave spots. We started with Fried Green Tomatoes and tried the Hush Puppies....soooo good. If you didn't know, everything is cooked fresh when ordered. The chicken is always cooked perfectly...crisp on the outside and juicy on then inside. Needed a quick bite after my flight at around 2:00ish. Ordered online and walked from the hotel- the online thing said it would be about 15 minutes but I ended up waiting about 20-25 minutes. I had asked for utensils, but they weren't included so eating the Mac and cheese was a bit hard since my hotel didn't have silverware easily accessible. I got the chicken sandwich combo which came out to a little over $15. It was a large sandwich but very small mac and cheese side. The chicken was alright but I wish there was more flavor and it was less stringy. Wasn't impressed and wouldn't try the sandwich again- but possibly a different menu item? Outing before the game with friends at Gus's. I ordered the catfish special that came with coleslaw and fries. Catfish was spicy and cooked right, had a great taste. Fries were good but coleslaw was just okay. Also ordered fried green tomatoes, they forgot about them. When we ate them was not that great like other location tried. Loved the texture and crunch of the chicken, but the chicken was salty. The greens would have been better with meat in them (when I ordered, I was told they had bacon bits in them. But the scoop I received did not have any meat in them). The sweet tea was delicious. I wanted to try the fried okra because of not many places here serve it. But I knew I wouldn't have wrong. Melaisia was sweet, friendly, outgoing, welcoming, and very helpful! She made some recommendations and also told me the spice levels of their chicken. She also noted that if I have a peanut allergy, their chicken is fried in peanut oil. Ala Cart - Thigh: Served fresh, never frozen, natural, hormone-free chicken, and fried everything in peanut oil (4/5). Nicely fried to a golden brown. Crispy and seasoned well with a kick. Unfortunately, they can not change the spice level. Per Melaisia, "If you can handle spice, it's a level 2. If you can't handle it, it's a level 5. It's not too bad." It does not matter what location in whatever town your in they have the friendliest and attentive staff. Went to this location with my wife for a lunch. The restaurant had plenty of seating with the tables spread out so you don't feel crowded. There was one waitress taking orders and she was a bit busy, but another worker came over and asked if he could start us off and get us drinks and an appetizer. The chicken was hot, juicy, and fresh when it was delivered to our table. We both enjoyed it very much. The sides included beans, Cole slaw and greens. The beans had a very good flavor and the coleslaw tasted fresh and had a good flavor. The greens were just OK, but we have a family member that does an awesome job with his greens, so no offense. But service was quick, courteous and the waitress checked on us frequently to make sure we enjoyed our food.
