They give you a lot of bread so you will be full. Pasta and veggies were good but not great. The side salad left a lot to be desired. Literally only one slice of tomato and lettuce with dressing. We did not get any dessert which I thought was included and I was looking forward to trying the bread pudding. Food took twice the amount of time they stated it would but they were busy so it is understandable. Please check out the updated menus I posted. Really good food. Really good prices. Really good service. I suppose I could say "what more need I say." But I think a little more explanation is in order! I just happened to be passing by and I thought the place looked interesting so I stopped in for a drink. Gus's is a real local charm type of establishment and it didn't take me long to settle in at the the bar and decide I wanted to grab a bite. I ordered the dinner special which may be the best value for a meal I've ever seen. For 15 bucks I got a very hearty appetizer (minestrone soup, bread and fondue), a fabulous entrée (ribs), and a very tasty dessert (bread pudding with pears) You literally couldn't prepare such a meal at home without spending more money. Don't believe any of the negative reviews. Yes, the furnishings are dated, but you don't eat the furnishings. I went with my fiancé on New Year's Eve. Our waitress, Cindy was excellent. She was funny and attentive to us. Even though the restaurant was busy. Yes, the fondue is probably, Velveeta, but it went excellent with the flaky French bread. My friend and I wanted to try their early bird special so we arrived by 4pm on a Thursday. Only a few tables occupied at the time. We were seated quickly and taken into an old fashioned dining area with lots of dark wood and booths. I felt like I was going back in time but I liked it. My parents used to take us as kids to old places like this! Our waitress had a great personality and I loved her spider web earrings! We both decided on getting the Chef's Special which was small slices of tri tip sauteed in a sauce of mushrooms, garlic and scallions. Quite tasty! The portion size was perfect! I decided on steak fries and zucchini on the side. You also get to choose soup or salad to enjoy before your meal. Dessert was ice cream or bread pudding with a little whipped cream. The bread pudding was great but the smallest portion I've ever seen served for this dessert. It equated to a little over three tablespoons. Maybe they needed to make more? We took some minestrone soup home and it was rather good with little bits of meat in it. Fondue also was served with the bread basket. Great food and service! I have given this place 4 chances to have good food over the many years and now I give up, this place needs a visit from Restaurant Impossible. Dated upholstered seating with a dent from years of seating, dark and hard to see cleanliness, velveta cheese fondue, very dry and wilted old mushrooms on my steak. Steak had no flavor and didn't look grilled,no charbroil at all. Veggies were boiled and overcooked. I ordered a Rib Eye which was the worst steak I have ever been served at any restaurant, over cooked if I would have held it up to the light I probably would have been able to see thru it -- it was that thin. If my wife and I were there alone I would have said something but I was buying dinner for my brother and did not want to ruin the evening for him, one thing is for sure I will never go back Gus has cut to many corners and lost my business and I will tell my friends and warn them ahead of time to find and a restaurant that takes pride in what is served because it is very apparent Gus does not. I really wanted to love this place, but I think it's seen its day. I like retro, but this spot is just old and faded. We happened to be in town just after 3 PM and saw they were open for a late lunch. They had their two-for-one special going so we thought we would give it a try. First the good news, our server was friendly and very efficient. She did everything right. I ordered the Tri Tip with mushrooms, which is a pretty basic meal. The fondue arrived, great idea but the cheese was thin and burned on the bottom, making it difficult to dip the bread. The cold crisp salad was the best part of the meal (along with the baked potato). My steak was tough, a bit overcooked and hard to cut. The mushrooms were lifeless and veggies lacked any flavor. I ate half the steak and gave up. I didn't want to offend our sweet server so I asked for a to-go box to toss in the garbage at home. It's doubtful we will give it another try. read more

The old school steakhouse ambiance, vintage comfortable red round booths, wooden country dinner tables, old school music, sizzling steak aroma, and dive bar section all set the mood for a good time. Our steak dinners consisted of choice of steak, garden fresh vegetables covered in butter, garlic pasta and an appetizer of delicious candle warmed cheese fondue with freshly baked bread. Th service was great. We have to admit there is no way the owners of the establishment tasted the food. Or maybe they should rename it Lemon Harmony? Reason being, the scampi tasted like lemons...couldn't even taste the butter. I had the blackened Prime Rib. Which might have tasted good but the chef also added the lemony shrimp on top the steak. $44 "special" which was mostly bone with bare minimum beef. FYI: prime rib covered in very lemony buttered overcooked soft shrimp does not taste good. I would expect the shrimp to also be "blackened" or grilled not simmered until they are overcooked. The veggies also had a serious shot of lemon. The garlic mashed potatoes were cold and tasted...well like lemon garlic. The wife had the battered veal. Which might have tasted great if it wasn't covered in a very flour tasting white super flour gravy. Hint: when making gravy make sure you roast the flour taste out of the butter/flour mixture before you add the cream or milk. Her veggies also had an overpowering lemon flavor. Her garlic masked potato's were ice cold and had an off flavor. The bread and cheese was good. We were just shocked at how bad the food tasted given the reputation of the restaurant. Conveniently located with easy parking. As you walk in the door you know Gus's has been serving steaks for decades. It is clean but not 4 star steakhouse clean, if the walls could talk. Formica, pleather and the thin stamped stainless steel silverware, thick white indestructible plates, this is OG steakhouse thru and thru. I ordered the New York medium rare with potatoes and steamed vegetables. They also serve you a plate of bread cheese fondue. You dip the bread in this cheese and if you like cheese you will love this. I really liked it. Steak came out perfect with a slight char on both sides which I absolutely appreciate. It really adds another depth of flavor to a good steak. All the sides were seasoned perfectly, lil buttery and a lil salty, just what you would expect. Every bite is full of flavor. We are at the bar and a lively women Bridget I think took care of us. She was entertaining and attentive. I enjoy eating at the bar because there is so much action. Gus's did not disappoint. This is by far the worst prime rib & lobster I have ever had! I have bought a prime rib from Wal-Mart, (cooked it myself), and it was 100 times better than at Gus steak house! I ate prime rib at Gus's steakhouse in 2019, and it was disturbingly disgusting, but I thought i would give them another chance. Absolutely so sorry I did. The prime rib is tasteless, tough, stringy, disgusting! You would think that a restaurant that specializes in steak, would get it right at least 1 out of 2 times!!! Don't waste your $ here! We had to wait for a table about 20 minutes. My husband steak wasn't good as he had order it. My steak was tiny, but with a pile of mushrooms on top. Since I am doing, I asked for extra vegetables and I didn't touch the great smelling bread, nor the dessert. Service was excellent and only reason for a 4 star rating was a screaming child- it made dinner a little hard. Ambience was great and the service was friendly and accommodating, but the food was perhaps the best I've had so far in Sonora. Whenever I see lamb I get a bit nervous as I've had bad experiences before but they blew it out of the water with Gus' Lamp Chops. Meat was tender and tore easily off the bone, I had the garlic mashed potatoes and minestrone for sides which were both a very comfortable accoutrement to the main course. I particularly enjoyed the garlic mash but then I'm a huge starch lover so go figure. They have a fondue gimmick with the bread that was pretty good for a first time fondue-r here if I do say so. My Family and I came across this place New Year's Eve on the way back from the casino. We were hungry and not familiar with the area and this place popped up on our map app being the closest place to dine. It looks like a rustic bar from the outside and is next to a dispensary. It's pretty small and cozy inside but the interior is definitely dated. We were greeted and seated right away. There was quite a few people in there and the air was really stuffy. Their menu was a special menu for New Year's Eve I'm guessing because it was just a flat page laminated with options on one side. There weren't many options and the prices were crazy high. We all ordered the ribs and chicken meals. The waitress was awesome and brought out the cheese fondue which was in a very tiny pan that looked like something you would take camping to cook one egg on lol......The bread for the fondue was warm and very tasty. Our salads came out first and they were good as the lettuce was nice and fresh. Our food arrived smothered in so much bbq sauce that we had to fish around for the chicken...lol!! There were 3 small half size ribs, 1 very thin flat piece of boneless chicken that was so dry that the BBQ sauce couldn't help it. The vegetables were hard and had no seasoning or taste to them, such a disappointment. The ribs were tasty but didn't have much meat on them. For $40 a plate we were hoping to have a better meal then what was presented to us. The service was great but the food was not.
