Five stars isn't enough. Every meal begins with fresh bread and cheese fondue. Who does that anymore? Pro tip: As tempting as it is, don't fill up on the bread and cheese! I've had the Prime Rib every time we've come because it's so good here but I've seen other people other stuff on the menu and it looks delicious as well. They have a bunch of specials if you get here before six pm and they're very generous about it. If you're in the door before six, you're in. $40 steak dinners served on plastic plates. I would not have cared about the plates if my rib eye dinner had a yummy sizzle-ly crispy steak on it. Alas it did not. It was medium rare (as I ordered) but looked like it had barely touched a grill. It came with average fare of a baked potato (I ate it all) and mixed vegetable of carrots and zucchini (I ate the great (really!!) zucchini). We went here because we liked the name and we were craving steak. When they seated us they gave us the early bird menu which had a 2 for $22.95 special. At first we weren't sure if it was $22.95 each or both, it was both. We got fondue, soup or salad (both were delicious) a full meal with potatoes and vegetable and a small simple but delicious desert. Our server, Vicki was outstanding. She was in constant motion without any wasted time whose service was impeccable. The bus people were also well trained. Food and service were fabulous. I had the veal cutlet and my wife had the chicken scallopini. My only regret is that I can't tell you how the ribeye steak is but based on EVERYTHING we experienced I can't imagine it being anything less than wonderful. We love the mix and match early bird menu; each entree comes with fresh hot bread, soup or salad, a surf or turf entree, your choice of potato or pasta, and dessert! On our most recent visit, we chose the two varieties of tri-tip. YUM! The service is also great and the owner is hands-on, helping out staff when needed. Gus steakhouse is my go to place in Sonora for a dinner after appointments or shopping. Their happy hour dinner special at two for $27 is the best deal in town. The special menu has everything that you would ever want an includes cheese fondue and bread soup or salad the main course and dessert. A drink there is poured to your satisfaction and very reasonably priced. Another family owned operation you get to feel like you're down home and treated like you're part of the gang. I've never had a bad meal there and always walk out like I've gotten my moneys worth and a quality experience. I am so confused on why this place only has 3.5 stars. I have passed this place for YEARS and never been inside. We came at 6pm on Friday and waited about 15 minutes. I figured we missed the earlybird special that everyone was talking about but apparently it ends at 7pm!!!! So awesome. The fondue and bread was really good. We ordered a house salad, cajun tri tip and the chicken picatta. Yes, the entree portions are somewhat small but you are paying $11 per person and they give you essentially 4 courses. Every time I turned around they were refilling. Any place that serves bottomless cheese automatically gets 3 stars in my book. We were a party of 7 and they handled us with ease. Drinks were flowing, appetizers didn't feel rushed by the entrees, and they had a great selection of wine. I ordered the spare ribs and clam chowder. The chowder was hearty and very creamy which I prefer. I had one rib which was well cooked, fall off the bone and very flavorful. Their entree specials are incredibly priced selecting 2 for 22.95 or something similar. So i wavered between 1-2 stars because the service was great but the food was pretty bad.... Everyone raves about the "fondue" its really Velveeta cheese over a candle. Nothing fancy at all! They also give you warm sour dough bread to dip. I ordered the chef special which was beef cubes with mushrooms and garlic. It was overly salty and overcooked... sigh... It comes with a choice of soup or salad and then a side. The minestrone was good and chunky! My friend ordered the rib eye with 3 pieces of fried shrimp. It had some weird cheese dressing and it tasted pretty gross. The meat also looked kind of orange and he couldn't stomach it down. It's raved as the best steak house in Sonora, but it's pretty bad despite being a full house on a Tuesday night. It's probably a local joint since its outdated designs haven't changed since the 80's. We went here this weekend with some friends of ours who had been before and highly recommended that we try it while my wife's godmother was visiting. I'm so glad we did! There wasn't much of a wait, we were seated in a nice corner booth in maybe 5 minutes and promptly brought some of their delicious cheese fondue and French bread, and PLEASE, if you're diet restricts you from carbs but you allow cheat days, use it here. We went through 4 servings of the bread and cheese before we got our actual food! Now for the best part, they offer 2 full meals for $26! Appetizer, entree and dessert! All of which were amazing. My wife got the Chicken Parmesan (a dish that she's a bit picky about) which she really enjoyed, and I got the pepper steak that was loaded with mushrooms. The steak was on the smaller side but it came with some pasta and veggies so it was a good side plate, and super tasty. Also, the steak was COOKED just how I asked which sometimes isn't the case so kudos. The fried prawns and clam chowder were also quite good, but I think My wife and I found the Scampi Sauté appetizer to be the most delicious part of the meal! Maybe the best scampi I've ever had to be honest, I mean shrimp isn't exactly a delicacy but the sauce that Gus's uses on it is so good! This is absolutely near the worst restaurant I have ever been to. For steakhouses it's below one star! The owner was waiting tables and rude, the steak was tough, the lobster was inedible, like rubber, they didn't deserve a good tip because staff was pleasant but i give a tip between 10-20% depending upon service. They included a tip in a 5 person sitting. I didn't expect that and failed to notice, and they didn't itemize it, so I gave them a 10% tip out of kindness and they didn't inform me they had already included a tip of 18%. So in conclusion, owner rude, staff dishonest, food horrible! I love steak and new to area but I will never enter their establishment again! I do not post false criticism, maybe they had a bad day?
