We heard of the soft opening and dined in for lunch. Right now, the wait staff is still in training, but they are all clearly THRILLED to be there, and it definitely contributed to our dining experience. We were cheerfully greeted by Billy, the manager, who clearly takes incredible pride in his team and the level of service they provide. I was super impressed with how much they all cared about our dining table experience. On to the food! I got the 4 piece chicken finger plate with okra and coleslaw. The okra is perfect, it's crispy on the outside and just cooked enough on the inside. The coleslaw wasn't at all overpowering and was a lovely, crunchy complement to the meal. The chicken was to die for. It was crispy and just spicy enough, with a juicy interior. Tried Gus's for the first time today. Came in around 11:30 to a very friendly staff and only a couple of tables occupied. Felt warm and welcoming there. Made a simple order of a grilled cheese and 2pc meal. It took a bit long to get our meal especially considering there was no one there and we didn't order much. But once the food came it was delicious. Chicken and beans had a kick but not so spicy to scare anyone off. One thing that I wasn't real excited about was the use of styrofoam cups and plates, plastic straws and plastic forks. That makes economic sense for the restaurant but it didn't really seem to fit with the rest of Chamblee's growing restaurant scene or the nicely decorated restaurant - it's enough for me to not want to return knowing I am contributing to the landfills with styrofoam and plastic items. I know it's supposed to be part of the experience - simple, Southern fried chicken place - but times are changing. Overall, I would say this was a good experience with good food. I was really frustrated with the service as no one would answer the phone. Ended up ordering online. The chicken is amazing! Super thin and crispy crust and every bite was juicy. We came here the first week they opened b/c I've been wanting to go to a Gus's forever and was thrilled to see one open closer to us. Overall, we really liked this location even though they had some initial hiccups that I'm sure they're working through. For example, it was the first day they got a liquor license so the waitress couldn't tell us any of the beers they had on top b/c they just got them in (she had to get someone else to come over and go through the list with us). Service was also a little disorganized b/c there was no sign when you first enter that says "please seat yourself" so we watched group after group enter, see the tables, pause near the door waiting to be seated since it seemed like formal seating just to have a waitress or someone finally notice and say "please seat yourself." I don't know if they have a sign now that most restaurants say where you can flip between seat yourself or please wait to be seated but that would definitely help. Service was also a little slow but again I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that it's just early hiccups and trying to figure out process, pace, etc. The reason for the 4 stars is b/c their chicken was SOOOO good. We liked that it was a little spicy and the sides were all delicious (mac & cheese, baked beans, cole slaw). The fried green tomatoes were a little disappointing b/c you only got 4 and they were just ok but nice to see it on the menu. In fact we liked the food so much, we just ordered them again this past weekend for my husband's birthday b/c fried chicken is his favorite food and when I surprised him with Gus's he was SO excited (read: he's a picky fried chicken eater and loved the food here). Lots of options in Chamblee right now but heard good things about Gus's chicken so I've been eager to give them a try. Ordered the 4 wing special with 2 sides (baked beans and greens). Also order the breast/wing combo with baked beans and potato salad. Unfortunately, I wasn't happy with any of it. The chicken was over-cooked, dry and the wings were very tiny. I am incredibly disappointed and hope it was just a bad day (thunderstorms/flood warning today). Weather shouldn't be a factor but would like to give them the benefit of the doubt. The potato salad wasn't seasoned well and the potatoes were way too firm. The greens were mushy, didn't taste fresh and were full of stalks. Thinking they cooked them extra long to soften the abundance of stalks. I took one bite and they were horrible. On the upside, the staff is super duper friendly. Gus's is everything one can want from a fried chicken joint, the chicken is tender on the inside and crispy on the outside, the mac and cheese is neon yellow (totally all natural) and the service leaves something to be desired. I am working 12+ hours a day so let me tell you the service at Gus's was a welcomed relief! Both the host and my server were running neck and neck for employee of the year in my book. The server was amazingly friendly and my waitstaff was equally impressive. Since I am new to southern cooking I initially thought this food might be too heavy but this was not the case. I got the two piece chicken (white meat) with the sides of mac and cheese and fried okra. It was the perfect amount of crispy and nothing was greasy. I ended up ordering the exact same meal as a carry out for my co-worker beside it was just that good and I wanted my friends to experience it. Chicken is this amazing thin skin deep fried perfectly crispy. My sides where the greens which was great a slight kick to them. Potato salad was good more on the sweet side I prefer a more tangier taste. Sweet tea is great not over powering. I can't complain all around great service. Gus can fry some chicken! I ordered the thee piece wings with slaw and okra while my husband had the leg and thigh with Mac and slaw. I was worried that the hot & spicy was going to be too much heat for me. I can't stand when food is too spicy and I can't enjoy it... but I pressed on. And I am glad I did. The chicken is one of the best I have tasted...ever. I can't even describe the skin which is crispy yet tender somehow. I noticed someone mentioned the wings were not as big as they preferred but I am totally cool with that. I don't need big hormone pumped, Church's Chicken looking wings. The okra was good and cooked through but could have used a tad bit more flavor. The slaw was slaw. The mac and cheese was not bad but I definitely had better. I can deal with it and would get it as a side again. Our server (Samantha per the receipt) was very friendly and welcoming. Overall we enjoyed our time at Gus and will DEFINITELY be going back. Rah waited on me when I stopped in and she's the reason I'm reviewing. Great service. Great personality. Service is hit or miss nowadays it's always nice to see a genuine smile and be greeted when you walk in a restaurant. For me it sets the tone for the rest of my visit. My dad had a hankering for some chicken and one of my friends posted on FB that he was eating lunch here. So I checked it out on yelp and saw all great reviews. They were right! I ordered a 2 piece snack jic everybody was lying lol. My dad got 3 piece wings collards and cole slaw. I soon regretted my decision and found myself ordering another order for the two of us the next day. The breast was juicy and the seasoning is perfect. A little spicy but just right! I love this place! The chicken was so crispy & fresh. I had been looking for a place like this. Their chicken was so good, I got the two piece but ended up getting an extra leg bc it was so good. Their Mac & cheese is great a long with their potato salad. My bf had the cole slaw and beans and loved it as well. For dessert we got pumpkin pie and chocolate and again, it did not disappoint.
